I think the cgi is still hella impressive... Wins against many recent film imo. Hdr was bit fucked with too high contrast that ruins the cgi effect blending alot. And it is one of the sharpest 2k upscales out there This also has lot miniatures and practical effects not all i just cgi at all...
I watch this movie in my home theater on 158 inch wide screen. I thought the audio and the 4k presentation was amazing. I felt like I was at a iMax theater. If you have a 4K projector and Dolby Atmos I recommend this movie.

You would only stick to the blu ray if you have shit sound system. The DTS:X is phenomenal. Most of these RUclipsrs have garbage sound sound systems like sound bars. They can't be trusted.

Thanks for the honest and candid review - I just picked this up and I am appalled at the (lack of) image quality in this transfer. As if the sharpness is turned way, way up. Many of the reviews have been calling it "reference quality" and it is quite frustrating. I have the highly regarded Sony A90J OLED (83 inch) as well as the Panasonic UBD9000 and Oppo 203 FYI. I agree that the standard blu-ray is better.

The Star Wars ‘Skywalker’ boxset had pre order box art on Amazon 6 months before it was released. Indiana Jones next year? Dunno about that either, the studio is gearing up to do a 5th one , the filming on that didn’t start on time because of the virus, so that won’t meet its planned summer release next year, which means no tie in box set in 4K, they’ll just wait until 2022

Hey Jeff! The King Kong 4k disc has been rocking my 5.1.2 system for quite a while. I enjoy the picture okay, but it is the DTS-X soundtrack is what does it for me.

To be fair, the only scene of the movie where the CGI looks dated is the dinosaur stampede. The rest of the CGI looks really impressive, especially Kong's design.

I was wondering if it'd be worth it buying the movie a third time, this time on 4k. Thanks for your review. I'm not sure if my Blu-ray also has the Extended Cut or if it's only the Theatrical Cut. I'll have to check that first. If I've already got the Extended Cut on Blu-ray I don't think it's worth upgrading. If my current Blu-ray only has the Theatrical Cut I will be getting the 4k release, but just for the sake of adding the Extended Cut to my collection.
Star Wars Revenge of the Sith suffers from the same problems in my opinion with the 4K transfer. It has such an obvious look when it's a 2K upscale. I think they did the same with Force Awakens. Just my thoughts on Star Wars in 4K. The originals are worth the money,, but the prequels and Force Awakens are obvious 2K upscales that only look good in certain scenes, but the blurring and grain is overpowering at times.
I believe so, sorry for being 3 yrs late, but i don’t see why it wouldn’t considering the amount of people who purchased ultimate edition for the extended edition.
This needs to be remastered the same way Lord of the Rings just recently did. This was a 2K upscale so it makes the CGI look much worse. But worse case, it’s the HDR that needs temperament. Overblown highlights and contrast as you said. HDR was out of control with this one.
You had me at “green screen effect”. That’s enough to keep the Blu-ray version. Some movies shouldn’t be released as a 4k. I’m noticing this on a lot of my 4k discs. Jurassic Park Especially!! What was once some the best CGI I’ve ever seen, now looks super fake on 4k. Even the Blu-ray versions of Jurassic Park looked more obviously fake. Bummer. Thanks for your videos. jeff, i dont think i have ever owned this film when i looked on amazon, i looked at the back of the bluray of the ultimate edition and it said ultraviolet digital whereas on the reissued 4k, it says "Movies anywhere digital code" would either code work on either the standard bluray or the 4k
Aaron Johnson Both codes will redeem on ma, however my Blu-ray didn’t come with a code. I’ve had it for over 5 years tho so they may have rereleased it with a code and obviously the 4K has a code

I think the green screen chroma composting to the life action elements has killed in selling the illusion. The vfx in general still hold up in my opinion kong looks excellent. As for the original Jurassic Park the CG dinos were also rendered at a resolution of 2K by those Silicon Graphics work stations which ILM owned. The JP vfx look noticeably softer when compared to King Kong (2005).
I wish you would also tell us if there’s any difference between the blu-rays. Like there is between Star Wars blu-rays. The one that came with the 4K packaging and the one that came out 5+ years ago.

Because it’s upscaled to 4K. If it’s not filmed in 4K or higher, it’s not considered a “true” 4K. But no it’s not false advertising. That’s probably why this one doesn’t look so good, since it’s an early 4K release.
None of what you mentioned was a problem for me. There was only 1 glaring problem, as far as I'm concerned and That's the AI DNR making people's eyes look like Xbox 360 eyes. Either that or it was the AI 4k up res on the CGI. Something made real eyes look like 360 video game eyes. It's atrocious!

Worst 4k I own is the spiderman trilogy with Toby. The grain is unbearable. I am not sure if it supports dolby vision but if it does then it would be my players fault because it doesn't support it

I don't get CGI bashing. Seems to be the flavor of the 2000'a. THis disc was just a bad transfer. Too bright, no depth, no detail regular blu-ray color. Could have been fixed up but I don't think these companies care about 4k discs.
Everything is going to be outdated, at some point. Look at some really old movies how they look today, like metropolis, it won't got me down and I got it in BD. If it ever comes in 4k, yes I will support it, besouse I like physical media and I know how time consuming and difficult it is for them, to do these things. If they wanted to really do it mind blowing, they would have redone all cgi in 8k...This will cost them more than they spent in the movie and since, physical media is on downside, and they know they won't get their money, this is the best they could with what they have and I WILL support it and upgrade it. You want perfect things? well, bummer becouse there is no such thing as perfect.

Honestly the movie looked that bad when it was in theaters. The cgi and actors never looked good just like some of the scenes in Jurassic park. Vhs is probably the only format that would make these films look better but they are what they are. If you want the film to look at its best than 4K is what you want. Every time i watch the Jurassic Park features and see those stop motion dinosaurs it just makes me so sad. They looked far better than some of the cgi in the finished film. Really should have been a blend of technology like JP3 & JW:FK did. Even Episode 1 looked far better than 2 & 3 because the overuse of cgi is just bad and not blended well at all. Surprised to hear you not recommend the upgrade. I bought it for that new bonus disc and prefer the 4K vastly to the blu-ray.

Only close up shots are crisp and detail but overall picture is soft and crisp. audio is also Ok-ish

Surprised to hear you not recommend the upgrade. I bought it for that new bonus disc and prefer the 4K vastly to the blu-ray.
