Nowadays everyone is constantly busy with something. But being busy doesn't mean we're using our time efficiently.
It's sad to say this, but most people completely waste their time.
And time is our most valuable resource. We can't make more of it, like we can make more money for example.
So it's wise to use our time in a way that will benefit us.
When we're bored, what do we usually do?
Most of us up end being glued to a phone, TV or a computer screen.
That might ease our boredom in the moment, and we might not even consider that time to be wasted.
    But there's an opportunity cost.
That time could've been spent on a different, more valuable activity.
Specifically on something that could actually benefit us greatly in the future.
This is why in this video I'll go over 5 things that will help ease your boredom, and teach you to use your free time more productively.

To play devil's advocate; I have wasted countless hours and days in my life just by thinking out of compulsion, completely wasting my time I could have spent having fun, playing a musical instrument or learning something new instead looping the same fucking thoughts a million times over and over. In fact, it pisses me off how much time I've wasted just fucking thinking and not learning anything because sitting down and fucking thinking is a complete waste of time 9 out of 10 times.

I am on summer vacation right now. I haven’t been on my phone much but when I am I have mainly been reading articles on things that interest me. However, the more I read and the deeper into the rabbit hole of ideas I go, the more I worry that I had never had my own original opinions. It’s not all political, but a lot of the articles that I’ve been reading have been helping me realize the error in my beliefs. I also read fiction and very much enjoy my adrenaline inducing books. And overall? The more I read the happier I am. But I have very much strayed from who I was prior.

this is something that I think everyone needs to see. many just spend their time on a device, which can affect mental health. if you think about it, staying on a device all-day full of boredom can actually lead to more boredom and possibly depression, with their life always doing the same, and their life ending up feeling like a loop. this actually gave more ideas then I knew before, so thanks!

    1. I don't stare over people's shoulders to see what they're doing on their phones or tablets. It's a bit rude.
    2. Considering the proliferation of ebook apps and mobile education platforms, I don't automatically assume that anyone looking down at a phone is doing unproductive tasks. Just because it's a screen doesn't mean that it isn't displaying worthwhile information. It doesn't have to be printed on paper to be considered productive.
    3. You don't know what that person's day has been like. If they're on social media, perhaps they've rightly prioritized checking up on a physically distant loved one going through a tumultuous time. If they're playing a mobile game, perhaps that's their one moment to step away from a hectic life of constant information overload and heightened stress.
I know when this was discussed in the video, it was with the premise of 'to each their own', but the deeper implication still comes across as: "You're in a waiting room. You look around. Everyone else is looking at their phones, indicating their attachment to meaningless time-waster tasks. You look down at your lap. You see a book. You are therefore special and superior." How about this: mind what you do with your spare time, but don't waste your mental energies on what isn't your business. Do what helps you. And should you stop being nosy and judgmental, you will become Better Than Yesterday.
P.s., I have been subscribed to this channel for a decent length of time now, and I feel that the quality of the content is generally good. I will remain subscribed for that reason. I simply want to challenge patterns of thought that I find to be generally problematic, at least where such dialogues have the potential for affecting change. By that token, I would not be commenting if I felt that it wasn't worth my time.
    Edit: Paragraph formatting.

    • @BetterThanYesterday
      @BetterThanYesterday  4 года назад +20

      Fair criticism.
      1. I'd like to address that I don't deliberately look at people's screens. Sometimes they just happen to be in my peripheral vision.
      2. I didn't intend to throw everyone in the same bucket, because phones, like you stated, can also be used productively. Just like any tool, it depends on how you use it.
      3. I completely understand that people need a way to unwind after a rough day, and their method might differ from mine. If I came across as judgemental or trying to appear superior, that wasn't my intention.
I was merely trying to promote reading as an alternative way to spend our time.

    • @reNNDinclusus
      @reNNDinclusus 4 года назад +5

@@BetterThanYesterday I appreciate your response. To be more measured, I didn't think your intent was to be judgmental.
The heart of the issue is that, in the vast majority of self help and lifestyle materials, people looking at screens in public places has become a very one-dimensional caricature of the 'mindless sheeple' that we ought to 'set ourselves apart from' to be better people. It's the perpetuation of this caricature that can be damaging, as it becomes a tool itself. A very specialized tool, with the focus of devaluing others in order to elevate ourselves.
Again, I didn't get the impression that you meant to perpetuate this stereotype. However, even well intentioned materials that use this rhetoric can unintentionally lend weight to this damaging false dichotomy.

Ur right...it has become so common, that even when I'm watching to cheer myself when I'm feeling down, or to take a break, or if I'm watching something productive and useful, I still feel it myself as if I'm wasting my time. Because that's what we've been told from the beginning. I constantly get told "stay away from that phone.. it's a waste of time...it's addictive, instead STUDY.." but do they expect someone to just study or read or work all the time? Is that what being productive is? Sometimes I feel compelled to take a book and start reading, but we shouldn't feel that way
P.S. I'm not against this channel, I also completely understand their intentions and quite agree with them

First one is very true, as a kid I hated reading since I have been forced to do it, I didn't enjoy it. As a teenager, I discovered comics, manga, with their texts to read to understand their story, those are my first "enjoyed" books. After reading a lot of them, I craved more to read, then I got to light novels, then finally non-fiction books.
Really, they should introduce books better---not just as, "reading is helpful for you, so read this." Not as how they see it already but for youth, make it look a fun activity and tempting so it will last and they'll do it on their own.

"In the world, you always build upon what you have learned in the past, adding new things as you go along. As you advance, you become more selective in what you learn because you want to validate what you have learned already. Thus, the intent of education, which is to learn something new, to experience something new and to be able to do something new, becomes lost because increasingly you will attempt to validate the past. Here you will become more fearful and anxious about the future, less willing to see things as they really are and less open to new ideas, new experiences and new capabilities. Here the mind closes down upon itself. It often does this with the belief that it is open and accessible when in fact it has become such a filtering mechanism that very little new information can come to it, either from within or from without."

Make a version of this list, but for when your batteries are shot. When you haven't the physical energy to exercise, the mental energy to pick up a new skill, the focus to sort your life or start up a book. When the thought of the future isn't inspirational, but sends you into a panic.
One benefit of browsing cat videos, watching a familiar show, or playing a "time-wasting" game like, say, Cookie Clicker, is that you switch into Abnegation. Abnegation is turning the brain off so as to decompress, to not engage with things. It's the rest after a busy day. And there are times when it's very, very necessary.
I still think some level of your categories are useful when you need that shutdown sequence. Like you pointed out, you can make something cleaner even if not clean per se, so on a "low batteries" day you could still pick up three pieces of trash (tiny progress), or try three wall pushups, or try to read just one page (or even just a paragraph).
Some other possibilities are to stop and try to practice mindfulness by focusing *only* on the sensations of your body or the world around you, and not thinking of anything more than the moment. You can play with a pet, if one's available. You could write down one thing you've accomplished today, or, if you can't think of one today, then any little thing you've accomplished in the past week. Or write down a list of things you're grateful for.
(I once was in a snit over missing holiday get-togethers -- like the entire holiday season -- due to various maladies, and I started writing an annoyed Facebook post. But then, in a sense of fairness, I added a list of things I was grateful for. The annoyances were maybe three things (though they seemed big to me at the time); the gratitude list ballooned up to something like 50. And I realized that I really had an awful lot to be grateful for, and that it wasn't such a huge deal if I didn't get to enjoy Thanksgiving or Christmas for just one year.)
So I'd love to see a video like this, but with a much smaller focus, for when it seems like even these things are Too Much and you can't bring yourself to deal with them, but could still use to try *something* even if it's just a little thing.
You might mention the list of "Everything is awful and I'm not okay: Questions to ask before giving up," which I would link to but RUclips has been eating my comments lately if they have any links. But it's a set of things to consider (are you hydrated? hungry? clean? have you interacted with another person lately? has there been any change to your meds, including a missed dose? etc.) when your batteries are shot.
