In Toronto, the Police Services advise the population to be safe and respectful to the theives. They have recently updated their advice from leaving the key fobs close to your front door and now ask you leave the doors to your car unlocked. They ask you to keep the engine running with the Heater on since it is still colder outside.
TPS asks you to leave your proof of car insurance and registration in your glove compartment. They also ask that you make sure you have a full tank of gas or full charge in an electric vehicle.
TPS asks that you leave a history of the car in your glove box.
To be a considerate Canadian, TPS asks you to leave a gift card worth $500 and a Tim Hortons Card on the front seat.
Remember, this is a new industry, creating jobs so the government supports all the help we can give the thieves.

The single best thing auto makers can do is to let owners turn off the hands free operation for the door locks. In other words, you would have to use the buttons on the remote to remotely unlock the vehicle. Some already offer that, but all should have that option. It's not foolproof, someone could intercept the signal if they were nearby when you push the button, but it would still be a big improvement over the hands free system.

I am glad to see that you have listed the "Club". Just because it is extremely "low tech" does not mean it is ineffective against most car thefts. The "Club" is an add-on highly visible protective device that will discourage a number of individuals from trying to steal your car. There is no device nor method that is 100% perfect against a car being stolen if the thief has the means, motive and opportunity to do so. I bought the "Club" in 1996 after witnessing a classmate's car being stolen. So far none of my cars have been stolen since using the "Club". Another, even better, method I saw being used to deter car theft was the removal of the steeling wheel. This method will overcome nearly all attempts by car thieves. What thief is going to carry a steering wheel of the car he wishes to steal?

Unfortunately in many big cities with high crime rates, when an arrest is made, the court systems will usually treat an auto theft arrest as the equivalent of a shoplifter. Nothing more than probation or a slap on the wrist especially in the case of a juvenile. If restitution is ordered, more than likely the victim whose vehicle was damaged will likely never see a dime from the thief. Absolutely nothing to deter the criminal from going out and stealing again.

In Australia we have a mandatory reporting system for all cars, PPSR service is a national register, it lists many things via entry of the vin number,
ie debt, last ODO reading previous sale, written off status, accident status, securities and out standing liens, and if reported stolen, also color, motor serial number. All this helps a buyer determine if the car offered for sale is genuine as advertised and any risks in purchase of the vehicle. Perhaps if Canada sets up a similar system for potential buyers, this would help to reduce the risk of fraud and theft.

How about Canada getting serious about jailing the vehicle thieves? No more catch-and-release. Get caught with a firearm or knife stealing a vehicle, no bail sit in jail till trial and a mandatory 5-year sentence. Break into a person's house to get the car keys again no bail mandatory 5 years in jail. Second offence higher jail time.Same thing for carjacking. Now the thieves if caught one day out on bail the next day and they go back to stealing cars. Canada is soft on crime and the thieves know it.

Auto theft is a huge problem since the pandemic, and insurance premiums put new car ownership out of reach for some people. An OBD lock is a great suggestion, but soon all autos in America will have kill switches as per the Infrastructure Bill. However, if you live in New York City, you might be better off renting for out-of-town trips.

Down here in Miami I actually have a secret carjacking switch on the car where where if anyone tries to carjack the vehicle by simply activating the switch the fuel pump will shut down in approximately 3 minutes giving me a chance to get to safety. Older Honda and toyotas are are big business for the chop shops down here because the car's last so long and parts can be pretty expensive. Be careful not to group all cars (various versions/options) within a timeframe. My Hyundai was one of the included years, but it’s not the version involved (they were going after keyed ones, not push start). Also…some have had engine issues, the engine on my 2016 is also not one of the included issues. Touted mechanic channels on YT have also over generalized and not provided appropriate details. When you generalize, everyone just assumes all versions were involved during that time frame instead of researching things for themselves. I just really hate when people generalize. It does no good for consumers that have the cars and consumers looking to buy the cars. You need to be more specific. There are so many versions of each in each year.
Also, any social influencer needs to be jailed when they promote crime. The more time goes on, the more evil people seem to get. I’m always grateful for the handful of good ones still around.

Automakers have been trying to DENY repairs to vehicles for DECADES with the claim the aftermarket product is the cause. When in fact it is not the aftermarket product that was installed by a reputable or licensed shop.
I've personally proven dealership service departments WRONG many many many times in the past. And ANY reputable shop will prove that what they Installed is not the cause of the vehicle fault. And if it WAS the cause of the vehicle fault they will take care of it. But dealers can NOT just void your warranty. They can try though and they will try

Americans should be blaming their Federal Government for the ease at which cars are stolen in their country. The Australian government made it compulsory for all new and used vehicles to be fitted with immobilisers at a minimum about 30 years ago. Since this law came into place all new cars came factory fitted with a fully integrated alarm/immobiliser and all used cars fitted with at least a high level immobiliser. No matter what system is fitted to a car there are thieves who will steal what they desire by using tow trucks and by other means.
