Just remember that in dimly lit environments you will see the shutter speed fall below the ISO Auto Minimum setting you have set, just as soon as the maximum ISO is reached in the ISO Auto range. Appropriate exposure is always prioritised.
Shutter speed is always something I fail to pay attention to. With your excellent suggestions set, I think my SS will definitely improve. Thank you Mark.
Wow, I've been serious about photography for 10+ years. You've caused me to rethink my entire foundation of action photography. Never thought that I'd want to avoid Shutter Priority, but it makes a hell of a lot of sense. Taking my A9 out soon to test this out. Thanks so much. Will donate shortly.
I prefer to prioritise exposure rather than shutter speed or PDAF - just remember that if the ambient light is low you will see your shutter speed drop below the one you set in ISO Auto Min SS

This is incredibly helpful. I do mainly sports/events, and to not need to be constantly worrying about shutter speed / iso so I can focus on getting the shots makes such a big difference.

Just got an a9 and was watching your basic settings for action tutorial and when you brought this up I was perplexed... After watching this i'm hopefully going to try it at a skiing competition this weekend! Thanks Mark!
Just remember that this is a location setting so if you try this indoors next to your computer, the shutter speed will be slower than the one you have set in ISO Auto Min SS because of the lack of light (the shutter speed begins to slow when the max ISO has been reached)..
Unless I’m using lights when I’m totally manual, I am an aperture priority shooter and use auto iso all the time. This RUclips video matches my experience exactly and good to have my experience over several years confirmed. My C2 button on my A9 and A7Rii are set to Auto ISO Min Shutter speed. I use C1 for focus area consistently on all my cameras. Thanks for the videos (sorry “movies”) Mark.
Great video Mark, thank you, you have a wonderful gift for teaching! Minumum shutter speed is an awesome function and I used to use it very much back in the days I had a Nikon D3100 DSLR. I purchased a Sony ZV-E10 last year and was very disappointed to find that the setting that I had on my 2010 camera is not available on the small Sony mirrorless (it did not even occur to me that it could be missing in any modern camera). I know the ZV line is targeted mostly towards video creators but I believe this setting should be available on all cameras and still hope Sony might implement this with some software update later on...🤞
It's unfortunate that Sony feel the need to reduce the complexity of their menus by deleting features they don't think basic users will use. The missing ISO AUTO Min. SS on the ZV-E10 is probably due to the fact that the A6100 entry-level camera (that the ZV-E10 was based on) did not have this feature. I would like Sony to see just how important this feature is and put it in the their Fn menu on all cameras.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills Wow, I did not know that the a6100 did not have it either 🫢 The menus are already big (but this is also ok to give us lots of options) and frankly one more line would not have made any difference for me in that matter. Going back to my D3100, it was also an entry-level camera and it had it 13 years ago meaning it cannot be so difficult to implement technically (especially seeing the higher a6400 I believe already has it). I hope they do eventually see the need to implement it as a standard feature. If you make a petition I'll sign! 😄

Thank you for explaining this so clearly and comprehensively. When working with low light and wild birds I have found myself wanting to set the minimum shutter speed to 1/1600s or 1/1250s on my A6300 but the feature seems to be limited to full stops forcing me to choose between 1/2000s or 1/1000s. Min shutter speed is such a good feature that I would programme the dial to change the setting without first having to press a function button. This would be great in a situation where I have a perched bird that is fairly still and I can use a slower shutter speed; however, I might wish to change to a fast shutter speed instantly if the bird takes to flight. I have started using the camera in manual with auto ISO instead, which allows me to change the shutter speed directly with the dial. I walk around with the A6300 and 70-350mm zoom, a lovely light weight camera but small apertures on APSC tend to force the ISO up more than I’d like.
This is a great feature. I just got the a7iii. Upgraded from a a6400 and this feature and stabilization was worth the upgrade alone. I am able to get sharp images at 1/8 of a second compared to 1/30 on my a6400 and that's huge. Thanks!!!!
Mark, I only just found and viewed this particular instruction video and found it one of the most useful I have ever come across , thank you so much for producing this and others.
Only video on YT, at least that i could find that goes into this much detail about such an important shooting mode and expands above and beyond. Thanks! Cant believe that 1/250 shutter speed got you those panning motorcycle shots, they are amazing. I have a lot of practicing to do lol
Great video. Since both the front and back dial control aperture when in Aperture priority, it's kind of weird that you can't program one of them to control ISO Auto Min. SS instead. It would be very useful. At least the function could be included in the "My Dials" customization.
Great video Mark. The nugget for me here was the lack of PDAF beyond F11 so I appreciate you throwing that in there. Like others, I watch your videos to learn as much as I can, not necessarily because everything will automatically be of practical use for my own photography -- but regardless of whether it is or not, everything you discuss is always worth knowing. I didn't know the A7 III could go down to f:11 until I saw this (I just bought one). I thought I was going to be limited to f:8 so thanks for that. My favourite trick with motorsport photography is to go as low a shutter speed as I can while maintaining accurate panning and focus. I have shot bikes at Phillip Island at the bottom of the main straight at 1/30th second. Always a pretty low keeper rate with that strategy but frankly, lower with some cameras than with others and when you get it right, the results can be spectacular.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills As I said, it’s a low keeper rate. I more often use 1/60th. Both my mate and I do this. I would probably put it down to muscle memory from 25 years I spent as a news cameraman.
As you explain so well, ISO Auto Min. SS is a very useful feature. However, although Sony acknowledge the use of non-native manual lenses by providing a Focal Length setting for SteadyShot, it's a shame that that information doesn't appear to be passed into the minimum shutter speed computation, because it seems to have no effect at all on shutter speed when in Aperture Priority mode.
I was wondering why it was choosing a lower SS than my minimum until I saw this in the manual: "If the exposure is insufficient even when the ISO sensitivity is set to [ISO AUTO Maximum] in [ISO AUTO], in order to shoot with an appropriate exposure, the shutter speed will be slower than the speed set in [ISO AUTO Min. SS]." - it slightly defeats the object of having a minimum SS if the camera can over-ride it, even if to ensure better exposure.
Thanks for that (and all the other tutorials-I've had the A73 for about three weeks and learned plenty from you.). I never would have thought to look for such a feature. With the great sensors in these cameras, I typically shoot manual with Auto ISO, but this is cool.
Mark', I admire you because you teach the most elaborate subjects in most comprehensive and simplest manner. I would like to see more Setting (Memory Setting) guides for Manual speedlite shooters with indoor and outdoor human subjects ..(Sony A7 III) Thanks a million ,,

Hi Mark I like your video and all the good work you put into them. I'm just learning sony a9 . I used Sony video Cameras / Still in 1990 they were all great Cameras and some how they got off track until the A9s and A7 . I glad to see they are back on top again. You are doing a great job with your videos. Thank you.
I am not sure what you mean by off-track. They didn’t enter the ILC market until 2006 and their development strategy has been consistent and progressive - although not always apparent to reviewers.
Splendid! Simply Amazing! Had I been aware of this #alphauniverse and #mirrorless whilst you were in Bozeman I would not have missed it for the world. C1 was immediately changed. Thank you!
Hi Mark. Further to my comment below, I was working on one of my photos in Lightroom that was shot in Manual shoot mode with Auto ISO, and the camera chose ISO 50. Thanks
All of your videos are great Mark. I have been watching them to learn as much as I can before taking the dive. I am working on a plan to purchase the A7R III with appropriate Sony lenses. Many thanks.
This is incredible, I had no idea you could access this setting via a custom button! This makes Sony's min. SS implementation the best I've seen, and honestly I'd consider switching from Fuji for that feature alone. However, in your kookaburra and dog examples, I personally would have preferred to max out the max ISO and let the camera honour my min. shutter speed, because as you said you set those speeds for a reason (to freeze the motion). Anyway great video, and greetings from Brissy :)
@@AlphaCreativeSkills but if you don't respect the shutter speed you could end up with subject motion blur, camera shake, or both. Let's use the dog example specifically. At the start you mentioned that you wanted 1/4000 to freeze the action, but later you show that this is lowered to 1/2000 due to your auto ISO limit to achieve the correct exposure. But according to your logic, 1/2000 isn't sufficient to freeze the action, so motion blur may occur (if 1/2000 were acceptable, wouldn't you just set that at the start?). And I'm not sure the panning example applies here, since you were actually trying to lower your SS at base ISO.
This customization was passed on during your a9 (and a7R3/a73) action setup videos. At first I didn't use "AUTO ISO Min SS". By chance, thanks to those videos and having that saved in Mem 3, I had it and used it once. That one single customization has done the most to improve my quick shooting image quality. If you haven't already, I would update those 2 older videos description and provide links to the video. I find that I get the action or run and gun, shots I want almost everytime now with this customization. I have my a9 and a7R3 both setup to use this customization for this type of shooting. I have C2 button assigned and adjust this often. The other thing I find myself using a lot is I have the metering mode where I can change it fast. I take a lot of shots with changing light situations and back and forth between multi, spot, and highlight. You get to know which metering mode will best capture the scene the way you want. But between those 2 (auto iso min ss and metering mode) with your action settings, my results have improved tremendously. I wanted to personally thank you again for all your work on these videos. If we are ever in the same city together, I owe you dinner my friend. Have a great day!
@@AlphaCreativeSkills good to know, I was watching your videos, they are amazing, I will try again AP with your iso settings faster, thank you very much. I mainly do wildlife and sports. I will use tomorrow the 428 with my sony a9
@@AlphaCreativeSkills Hi Mark I returned from my trip, I tried AP but for wildlife photography M still the gold standard under my eyes, check these photos ruclips.net/video/vlqKxI3ben8/видео.html
Another very informative video, but please comment on why you prefer this over manual mode with auto ISO which gives one total control over both aperture and shutter speed. Thanks
I think I highlighted this when I discussed the fact that in ISO AUTO Min SS exposure is protected, i.e. the Selected Min. SS is a target and NOT a fixed setting as it is in Manual and Shutter Priority Mode. I also raised the point that if aperture is a variable in Shutter Priority I may lose focus tracking or deny me the depth of field I require to ensure my subject is sharp.
I love my Alpha 7 camera. this a helpful video. Sony has done its best to make the automation helpful, but its a lot to remember, if you are shooting in less than usual conditions. bike shots were, I presumed all panning shots I did wonder if/how this 'help' is implemented in the A99 A-mount camera, which is reputed to have clairvoyant AF the ageing menu system, needs revamping, imo. flip forward screen, added lcd utility would be helpful, maybe the V (5th) series will get those. - so Sony keeps it tech. lead.
Just remember that when the ambient light gets low the shutter speed will go below what you have set in ISO Auto Min SS - this is to prioritise correct exposure over shutter speed.
Except that it does not work well -- Auto ISO and Min Shutter Speed can collide with one another, and the Shutter Speed takes the hit so that it's no longer kept at the "minimum" value you selected....
F/11 is the smallest aperture for PDAF. You could follow my guidelines for setting up the A7lll and A7Rlll cameras with the exception of using Tracking AF: Wide instead of Wide.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills Hello Mark, thanks for you answering my question, but what do you mean with PDAF, PD auto focus, but what is PD? And what do you mean with Wide instead of Wide?
I just joined your website and I'm very impressed with everything what a great site and I'm learning so much already. You have more information I think I've seen from anybody out there so I joined your site and very happy with it and can't wait to read more. THANKS Just one quick question if I may on the ISO Auto Min SS. I did watch the video on it but just a question relating to what I would be using it for and if it would help me? I just used the SONY A6700 at an air show for the first time with my SONY 200-600 G lens. My setting were, Shutter Priority at 1/2000, AP was around F/8 to F/11, Auto ISO, 10fps and can't remember the metering? I have some good clear shots and was wondering if the ISO Auto Min SS would help with airshow air shots or not for this application?? Was shooting fast jets as well as prop planes but then dropped the Shutter to around 1/125 to keep prop blur. Thanks a ton. Bob NEW FAN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Mark. I found another 12 photos, shot in a consecutive series with the image mentioned in the comment below (not a burst), that were also shot in Manual Shoot Mode with Auto ISO, that had an ISO 50 when I verified the exposure information in LR. The images were shot with my Sony a7r3. I wish you and your family a happy holiday season. Thanks.
I can’t replicate that on my camera because the Auto ISO minimum setting is restricted to 100 on my camera. I am curious as to how your camera manages to achieve this.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills I think I finally figured out why I found ISO 50 with what I thought was Auto Iso. I put ISO on the control wheel on the back of the camera so that I can change ISO easier by simply rotating the wheel. I changed the ISO to auto when I took the camera off the tripod to use it handheld and I must have knocked the control wheel without realising it and the ISO switched out of Auto to 50. Many lessons learned. Please excuse my inexperience. Thanks.

I am happy if I can pan at 1/250 second so your panning technique must be pretty solid if you are attempting 1/30 second.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills As I said, it’s a low keeper rate. I more often use 1/60th. Both my mate and I do this. I would probably put it down to muscle memory from 25 years I spent as a news cameraman.
Great, thanks! Defenitely gonna try that mode, as i've missed quite some shoots to motion blur in the past ...
This may be something the manufacturers of the smart adapters can address
Thanks Mark, great info as always. Glad to be a Patron.
Much appreciated!
Can't wait to get my new camera to put your advice into practice! Thanks for these fantastic video tutorials.
thank you Mark. You helped me to take better pictures.
Great to hear!
Mark, thank you for such a clear and concise explanation of ISO Auto Min. SS. Your explanations are the best. Thanks again.
This is a good thing - better that you get s shot with a slightly slower shutter speed rather than one that is seriously underexposed
Thanks for that (and all the other tutorials-I've had the A73 for about three weeks and learned plenty from you.). I never would have thought to look for such a feature. With the great sensors in these cameras, I typically shoot manual with Auto ISO, but this is cool.
theeeere we go ! didn't want to click on this in the first place because of the 26 minutes but it's all here, thank you !
Mark', I admire you because you teach the most elaborate subjects in most comprehensive and simplest manner.
I would like to see more Setting (Memory Setting) guides for Manual speedlite shooters with indoor and outdoor human subjects ..(Sony A7 III)
Thanks a million ,,

Hi Mark
I like your video and all the good work you put into them.
Wow, can not thank you enough! I've learned sooo much from you and your tutorials! The best!
Splendid! Simply Amazing! Had I been aware of this #alphauniverse and #mirrorless whilst you were in Bozeman I would not have missed it for the world. C1 was immediately changed. Thank you!
Very nice video again. Very helpfull to discover more from our Sony full frame camera's. Thanks!
Hi Mark. Further to my comment below, I was working on one of my photos in Lightroom that was shot in Manual shoot mode with Auto ISO, and the camera chose ISO 50. Thanks
I didn't think that was possible
As usual with Mark’s videos, superb and chock full of information.
All of your videos are great Mark. I have been watching them to learn as much as I can before taking the dive. I am working on a plan to purchase the A7R III with appropriate Sony lenses. Many thanks.
What a brilliant tutorial and knowledge passed in such a professional manner! Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
If you respect the shutter speed you will underexpose the image. I would rather have more panning blur than underexposure.
Waiting for my first Sony camera, I was wondering about this . What a nice implementation, thank you for this great explanation.
Excellent presentation!
Mark, thank you. I really do value your videos, they have helped a lot.
Glad you like them!
Love the moto go shots. Wouldn’t mind a go at these . Great vid as always 👍
Great video as usual, I still using M for everything (as the majority of sports and wildlife photographers), any tutorial should be great
The majority of Wildlife photographers I know (and I know a lot) shoot in Aperture priority.
Amazing, Mark. Just amazing. Another really helpful tutorial!
Sony has done its best to make the automation helpful, but its a lot to remember, if you are shooting in less than usual conditions. bike shots were, I presumed all panning shots
I did wonder if/how this 'help' is implemented in the A99 A-mount camera, which is reputed to have clairvoyant AF
the ageing menu system, needs revamping, imo. flip forward screen, added lcd utility would be helpful, maybe the V (5th) series will get those. - so Sony keeps it tech. lead.
I was just learning about this and found your video. Excellent as always
Glad it was helpful!
Definitely the greatest content on RUclips!!! Thanks a lot for Your help!!!
Everyday is a school day, especially when I watch your videos Mark! Thank you so much.
Thanks for the info... will be tipping soon!!!
Thanks for the very helpful video. I have a sony a7iii. This video will help alot.
Great video. Thanks Mark !
Great Info Sir
I love your all tutorials
Stellar information Mark ! Pure gold !!! Thank you !!!!!!
Love your videos, thank you Mark!!!!
outstanding presentation! Thank you! :)
You're very welcome!
Wow, who knew. Great in-depth advice
Many, many thanks for this explanation it helped me a lot. Cheers Jess
Just remember that when the ambient light gets low the shutter speed will go below what you have set in ISO Auto Min SS - this is to prioritise correct exposure over shutter speed.
Mate. You have no idea how much this helps everybody. :)
Except that it does not work well -- Auto ISO and Min Shutter Speed can collide with one another, and the Shutter Speed takes the hit so that it's no longer kept at the "minimum" value you selected....
Hi Mark, thank you for sharing this video, it's very interesting. But very curious about these setting for the A7R IV....
Curious in what way?
How to set up the mark IV for sports, and if also for this cam f/8.0 is the smallest aperture.
Excellent video. Thank you. 👍🏻
I just joined your website and I'm very impressed with everything what a great site and I'm learning so much already. You have more information I think I've seen from anybody out there so I joined your site and very happy with it and can't wait to read more. THANKS
Just one quick question if I may on the ISO Auto Min SS.
Hi Bob
Can you ask photographic questions on Mark’s Patreon support channel as he doesn’t get a lot of time these days to answer questions on RUclips. You may also want to list the specs of the camera again as there is no A600 camera in the Alpha lineup - Thanks
The Admin Team for Mark Galer
I meant 6700.
Ok yes I joined so I guess there's an area to ask a question??
Great tutorial, as always. Thanks!
Great content Mark, learned a lot from you !!!!
Really great video! Thank you for this!
great fotograph, wunderfull
Mark, your instruction and information are detailed and professional, at every level of shooter. Thank you. IM JOINING
Excellent as usual, love your images. Do you mind sharing your general picture profile?
Great feature. I miss it on my A6100. Does anyone know which of the APSC lineup models support this feature?
All of them except the A6000 and A6100
Great info! I've already shared with other Sony shooters. Actually really enjoy every video of yours I've seen. Keep up the great work!
Wonderful help. Thank you 🙏
Thanks.
