I have two as well, same issue with sometimes they'll operate and sometimes not which is annoying. I'll have to try your fast vs slow technique.

Can I use it to punch a holes on the take out pho plastic cups for planting
I doubt the plastic cups will hold up to the punch, it will just rip a hole in the plastic cup - thanks for subscribing!

For tons of stuff- works great when drilling metal- most metal, not sure about cast iron, personally
