- While enjoying the most amazing island I have ever visited I still have some serious challenges with my sails. I might be stuck here for a while but it is definitely not the worst place to be stuck. Bali is a dream destination, but the sail loft here was not as expected.
I'm showing you some Balinese culture and even the contrasts on this exotic island. I am also sharing my first impression of Bali in an unfiltered and honest way.

ABOUT THIS CHANNEL:
I'm a sailor with a RUclips channel and not a RUclipsr. Sailing around the world in a Bavaria 55 Cruiser mostly solo, making videos whenever we have time for it.
Comfortable at sea with 4 decades of sailing experience and hundreds of thousands of miles behind me.
Even though this is season 6 on RUclips I did not make that many videos in the beginning, and obviously not from my entire sailing life. Before full-time sailing 6 years ago, I sailed several seasons in the Mediterranean, and obviously also in Scandinavia. I had my first sailboat at age 7 and have been sailing and racing ever since. Also, more than 10 years of experience as a captain in Search and Rescue at sea in Norway.
I appreciate you showing the contrast between reality and Instagram. Finding solitude amongst 5 million people. 😂 I'm happy to see you enjoying yourself exploring via a motorbike and wearing a helmet, making friends, and relaxing. The traffic is 🤯 Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much for your kind and also spot on comment. All the best
Good luck with the sails.
Thank you so much 🙏🏻
Great you are having a relaxing time. Thank you for posting.
Thank you so much for watching and for being here
Tomas, we have been there 5 time and the people make the island! You however bring it to the people!
Great job Tomas we just relived our trip! Great video and love the commentary!
❤ from 🇨🇦BC
Thank you so much🙏🏻 I’m really glad you enjoyed this video and I promise there will come a lot more from this amazing island and people. All the best
Glad you enjoy Bali so much, and as you know, in sailing those lowest of the lows are so often contrasted with the highest of the highs.
Thank you so much 🙏🏻 Bali has truly everything I have wanted for a long time now, so I’m really enjoying it here⛵️
Interesting report. All the best with your sails ❤
Thank you so much 🙏🏻
The distance between reality....and what is seen in a photo. How true. Enjoy your time in Bali and looking forward to seeing your repaired sails filled with wind!
Thank you so much for your comment and for being here! All the best
Hi Thomas, great episode lot of information, in particular the places with bloody cold beer! Looking forward to your adventures on the scooter, but be careful in traffic, because they drive on radar on the inside of their eye lids! 😂😂😂
Thank you so much for your kind words🙏🏻 The traffic here is absolutely mental 😆
But they are just as lovely in the traffic as elsewhere, so it goes pretty smooth.
All the best
I think I have to put Bali on my bucket list, what friendly people.
An other great episode.
Cheers 🍻
The people here are the friendliest and most smiling people I have met on my long adventure. I absolutely love it here!
Awesome Thomas
Thank you so much 🙏🏻
"One Meatball in a dinner from IKEA" There is a life message in that statement Thomas!😃 Glad to know, no matter were you are in the world, you can always find an IKEA meatball. 😂
With no sail loft in Bali, you are going to need to have any new sails imported into Indonesia, that is going to get expensive fast. Sounds like we need to get a "Go Fund Me" set up to help with your expenses for new sails and a Bimini top!
Very nice video Thomas, glad to see Brian & Alisia back on board Be Free again. I know you are enjoying their company and help. Fair Winds & Following Seas Thomas!
Thank you so much my friend 🙏🏻 Your support and positivity is always a blessing! I could not resist using the meatball comparison as it was just how I felt it. Getting new sails is quite a challenge and I have talked with several sailmakers. You are spot on in the expensive part, import to Indonesia is not only expensive but also complicated. I tried to have a new power board shipped in, and it disappeared in Jakarta.
All the best
Great Video!!! will leave St Croix for San Andreas in the next week. Enjoying the quiet while it lasts!!!!!
Thank you so much and please have a safe and beautiful sail to San Andres ⛵️ Fair winds
Thank you Thomas, also for sharing a direct viewpoint of the popular Bali.
It's great that you experience some warmth and friendliness, for a change.
The Bintang beer is to be recommended, from having experienced the Indo hospitality first hand.
Enjoy!
Ps. Best wishes with repairing your sails.
I believe Bintang started out under Heineken during Dutch rule. "Bintang" means "star" in Malay and Indonesian. When you need another beer, hold up your index finger and shout "satu lagi" which means "one more".
@@Tom-tk3du Thanks Tom, interesting history. It appears that your basic survival Bahasa is already in place.
Enjoy! 🙂
@@joecruiser According to my Malay teacher and other locals, I'm about 85% fluent these days. Wish I took it seriously years ago. The locals faces "light up" like the sun when you can, or try, to converse with them in Bahasa. But "satu lagi" is a good practical place to start. That's how I started. 🤣
Thank you so much guys for sharing your experience and thoughts here! I agree that speaking a few words in their language brings even bigger smiles on already beautiful and smiling people.
All the best
Great to see you enjoying a mixed and varied time hope the sail mending goes well or you find someone who can do it and let you make the most of your time.
Thank you so much for your kind words and support being here. All the best
Hello Thomas you go to the most beautiful places I hope before I die I will have some kind of a sailboat I would love to meet you one day I'm on the west coast of California so have safe travels my friend God bless you and thank you for sharing your videos
Thank you so much for your kind words and for being here🙏🏻 I hope you one day will be able to set sail into the sunsets as well, and discover tropical paradise islands the way I am so blessed to do.
All the best
Fantastic, thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much for watching 🙏🏻
Hmmm Starting with Nuptials on the Beach, planning something Thomas ? Fair Winds 😎
No plans 😆 Thank you for watching and for being here 🙏🏻
Good luck repairing your sails
Thank you so much 🙏🏻
Is there a canvas Cover maker there ?????
There is but they don’t have Sunbrella here. At least none of those I have talked with have the quality I am looking for. In general it’s very few yachts visiting Bali, so there is not really much service around yachting industry here. All the best
I was in Bali 60 years ago, did not have the tourists at that time, in some parts they have black beaches.
You would not recognize this island today. It’s so developed and still looks like it’s lots of projects around here. Thank you so much for being here
Have you found someone to repair your main ?
Not yet 😅 Thank you for watching
Hi Thomas I appreciate your videos.
I had considered putting lithium batteries in my sailboat but I've decided against it after seeing so many car fires.
I'm not sure what kind of batteries you're using on your boat but I know you have a big bank of batteries and I was wondering if fire is a concern because obviously that would destroy your boat and there would be nothing you could do to stop such a runaway fire but I'm speaking strictly as somebody that doesn't know very much about batteries at all I just know what I see so what are your thoughts on fire and the batteries?
Totally understand your concerns and electrical installations in general are dangerous if not done properly. Lithium comes in many shapes and chemical designs, some are more dangerous than others. The ones I have are supposed to be pretty safe.
All the best
@8:15 someone defaced the beach LOL
Ha ha😆 Thank you for watching
Have you tried Durian yet?
Not yet 😆 Cheers my friend
Wow, this is going to be a heavy cliffhanger before we get to know how you manage the sail repairs. 🪡
Still haven’t figured out if I should be worried about this 👀
Thank you so much my friend 🙏🏻 Apologize for late reply and the sail project is for sure gonna take a while. For now I just try to enjoy Bali and regenerate some energy! All the best ⛵️
