199 episodes, thanks for that. I have seen them all, following you for many years. You are a real inspiration to me and I learned a lot from your videos. In 2026 I will sail away on my 44ft sailyacht from Holland ⛵️
Very nice Thomas, I know you will miss having Alisia & Bryan onboard Be Free. Always a good idea to give the monkeys and other wild animals a wide birth, as you say they are unpredictable. Keep up the great videos my friend. Fair Winds & Following Seas!
Thank you so much my friend🙏🏻 Yes it’s for sure empty without them, but also nice to be “home alone” again as well😀 All the best and warm greetings from me and BE FREE
Great video Thomas. It has been very nice to watch you share your adventure with Brian and Alysha in Bali. Good luck as you now tackle all the projects on hold in preparation for sailing on. Take care and looking forward to the 200th episode!
Well Tomas, as they say one door closes another opens. As the ancient saying goes, A True Traveler Never Arrives to a Final destination. Thanks for introducing me to another aspect of Bali. I had no interest traveling there, now I have changed my perception of the place. Thanks to your off the beaten track exploring with your friends Alicia & Bryan. SV Skoiern IV,
Thank you so much for your kind words and for being here. Bali has a lot to offer, and the less known places are truly amazing. Most people coming here have no time to explore the entire island like we have done. It’s a big island and a lot to see and do that doesn’t even cost any money. Cheers
How does the Bavaria actually sail? Is the hull shaped in a way that makes sailing more comfortable? Are there conditions where sailing is bad (like shallow water)?
Thank you so much for watching. Your questions are a bit general, but I will try to answer. My Bavaria sails very well, safe and comfortable. But important to know and understand is one design can work very different in different hull lengths. Meaning if it’s exactly scaled down the performance should be equal scaled for displacement (hull speed), but if it’s tweaked to give volume in the smaller version eg. A 34 foot from same brand (not specifically Bavaria) looks similar but are having some compromises to achieve inside volume this might give different experience. Some designs just don’t work as well in shorter hull lengths, and the other way around. What I try to say is the experience of a brand can be very different between a 55 and 32. Sailing conditions depends on many elements like ocean currents, wind direction, waves and underwater topography. Meaning one day it can be a smooth sail, another a nightmare at the exact same position. The hull size can have different experience, and even speed through the same waves. So there is many variables. The biggest challenge with a modern hull design the size of my Bavaria is the boat speed. She sails sometimes way to fast, and flying over waves can become uncomfortable for the crew, and even not optimal for the yacht. No cruising yacht are designed to be airborne and free fall on the other side of a way in endless beating. Some seem to not understand this detail. Solution is to slow down from eg. 12 to 7 knots. This will make a huge difference in terms of comfort.
@@SailingwithThomas Outstanding reply Thomas, with lots of detail, but explained in a way that a layman non sailor can understand. Keep up the great work my friend!
@@SailingwithThomas Thank you so much for your answer, i am currently looking for a 38-42 foot sailboat but i have little experience in sea-sailing. With so many Bavaria, Benteau and Jeanneau sailboats for sail i was wondering if this is because they're good or, are they for sale because they have bad handling or uncomfortable sailing capabilities. Good to know that i try to find out from model to model what other people's experiences are, the good the bad and all that jazz, before i make my choice. Thanks again and i hope all goes well for you, so much bad luck/experiences lately, i hope the repairs go well, and help comes when you most need it.
You are most welcome, and thank you for being here. My next episode might be valuable for you, and maybe look at all the online information and fear mongering from a different perspective. I’m explaining how to understand a mass production yacht, and also busting some myths and repeated miss understandings as if they where facts. All the best
What you call the monkey temple is actually called "Pura Luhur Ulu Watu" and there has been a temple there since the 10th century. Nothing like the tourist trap today. Originally only the small part with the stupa building and two smaller ones was there. There are some nice statues as well. In the 1970s that is all there was. What is there today has been build over the past 30 years. The temple was built to honer the Sea gods, and it is one of the main temples on Bali, although originally very small. The entire Peninsula beyond the airport was almost empty of buildings in the 1970s, and I used to drive on motorbike to the temple to lick the last sunshine of the day, watching the sunset. Not worth the trip any more due to the crowd of people.
Hi Thomas, I had to think about you now the past weeks in Croatia. I sailed a Bavaria 50 Cruizer which is a slightly smaller boat then your boat. And yes, there is always something to repair on such a boat, and the screwdriver was my companion. So all the best for your coming busy weeks. Greetings from Mitch 😊
Hey Mitch, there is only one thing that’s guaranteed on a yacht, and that’s something will fail or break. The bigger and more complex the more sources for trouble. I hope you had a beautiful sail and holiday ⛵️
Trying to close on a boat in Florida, stupid hurricane’s are getting in the way. Hope to close in a week. Thanks for your inspiration I might not have done it without your positive videos.🍻 cheers!!!!!!! You have inspired me Thomas so I definitely owe you many beers!
Thank you so much for sharing this with me, and hope you are safe from the hurricane. Feel free to sign up to Patreons to support and help me, if only for a short period🙏🏻 There you have access to direct chats as well. Good luck with closing the deal on your yacht ⛵️
Let me know when you reach Thailand you are welcome in my house in the North East where I live ( in Loei city). I also sail but on the med on a First 25.7 last summer left South of France to Preveza in Greece. Great fun. If you go to Singapore use Tanjungpinang Penang or Batam Island last points in Indonesia before taking g the Malacca straight. I worked there for nearly 3 years super safe place and friendly it is approx 30 NM of Singapore city
I enjoy your niche far more than the so-called best RUclips channel winners channel at this year's Annapolis Sailboat show. With barely any real sailing under their belt, focused more on bikinis and shots and offering up haphazard electrical advice, you blow them out of the water as a sailing captain. I'm excited about Be Free's next episode. Thanks for sharing.
No it’s not that old, but things goes in warp speed here. I did not know they have reared down the cliff there, so must be pretty resent. It’s their island and nation, and as a guest I have no rights to say much. But it’s a bit concerning to see how the nature is under hard pressure for development here

7 years , wow 🥰🥰🏴
Time flies fast. So much content never published here. Years of sailing in the Mediterranean as well
Nice to see the long tail monkey temple
It’s a beautiful place to walk around even if the weather was not the best during our visit. All the best

My experience has been that it's best to avoid monkeys. They are entirely untrustworthy. Those howlers around Shelter Bay make some freaky noises! 😅
Yeah wild animals are best to keep at a distance. I remember the monkeys in Panama. Lots of noise from the jungle
Beautiful landscapes! So lucky for you to take us along on your adventures!

This video must have been filmed months ago because they have destroyed the cliff 500mtrs north of the temple unfortunately
