- The US has shot down a giant Chinese balloon that it says has been spying on key military sites across America.
The Department of Defence confirmed its fighter jets brought down the balloon over US territorial waters.
China's foreign ministry later expressed "strong dissatisfaction and protest against the US's use of force to attack civilian unmanned aircraft".
Footage on US TV networks showed the balloon falling to the sea after a small explosion.

Or they just wanted the missile to hit the balloon. Contrary to popular belief, it takes time to turn. The pilot kept going straight because he would have pulled an unnecessary amount of Gs to go any other direction after firing the missile. The only time you would do that is if you’re in a combat situation so unless the balloon is shooting back, there’s no need to potentially injure the pilot or damage the aircraft

Sensor packages work better in atmosphere than on satellites just due to range. The possibility of looking at underground facilities is very real with new developed technologies. The balloon could also be waiting to scan the aircraft sent to shoot it and gather electronic information on the missile and sensor package of the f-22... I'm just guessing of course but it's interesting.
China has 400 American military bases just off their coast. If they wa.ted to spy on our capabilities, they could do it there.

The balloon changed direction multiple times against the air stream and was able to slow down against the wind. It had slight ability to navigate and was found hovering over multiple military bases including Fort Bragg North Carolina.

Okay so apparently this is not the first time this has happened.
The first time: okay

Third Time: Okay now this is not an accident.
My only question is why a sidewinder? The cannon would have been just as effective and far less expensive.
It would have taken much longer to hit it, costing more for fuel and ammo. The balloon was small compared to the targets the cannon is meant to hit. The sidewinder was the cheapest and quickest option for getting the balloon out of the sky.
Now it makes me wonder if it was possible for special forces to board the platform with all the unknown hardware, attach some parachutes and then detach the balloon.
I'd like to see China behaving "proportionately" and "not overreacting" (as China preaches in this present case) when a US "weather balloon" somehow enters the air space above the Chinese mainland and allow the balloon to leave and go home to the US.

First of all, their is no such thing as a civilian anything in China, so we can rule out that explanation right now. Since europe enacted its GDPR which is far-reaching but still insufficient by data security experts, all those firms active on both sides of the atlantic have to warn their customers that since they run servers on the US side, they cannot guarantee privatcy since US governemental bodies reserve a lot of intrusion rights.
If you use YT, FB, Apple or mircrosoft products your data is about as safe from the US governement as TikTok-data is from the chinese one.

@@user-freetopg The balloon was at 65K+ feet in the air while F-22’s have a flight ceiling of 60K feet. Conventional artillery couldn’t work because the pilot would have to shoot facing up into the stratosphere, not to mention there was the risk of hitting the payload and causing damage that would render it beyond analysis by the military/CIA. Instead, there must have been some sort of heat emanating from the balloon, probably from its propulsion system (propellers) that allowed for a sidewinder to lock-on to instead.

That was my question but this was an X model and apparently its seeker is extremely sensitive to heat. The old Vietnam era sidewinders wouldnt be able to lock on but this model can.
Sidewinders don't have active or passive radar, its all about the heat sensitivity of the seeker.
It's a massive failure on the part of everyone involved that it was not taken down sooner. It was basically finished its mission by the time they shot it down. Bit of a disgrace.

Thing is, if this balloon was engaged in reconnaissance activities, or is suspected of doing so in another countries airspace, they have every right to take swift and robust action by engaging that potential threat. If it turns out to be a weather balloon as indicated by China, then I'm sure the United States government will compensate the company for which it belongs. In today's climate, particularly in relation to the war in Ukraine and the immediate threat to Taiwan by the Chinese, no western country is willing to take any risks, and rightly so.
So we had three balloons in three different places.
