The problem is that they are going in the wrong direction. The universe has been saved, now it’s time to focus on the little thing, and the smaller battles.
Exactly. Or given the recent revelation of the multiverse, they should explore other characters' smaller stories in different universes. Like the Fantastic Four shouldn't be from the current universe of the MCU and instead should be from a multiverse instead. It gets too crowded and questionable otherwise.
Smaller and self contained would aid in building up interest. But, it could be a mistake anyway. Film genres can just burn out. My first concern is that they just keep churning these things out until the audience is so fatigued that they're forced to retire them for 20 years. The alternative is worse. Different is exciting. Marvel dominating in the same capacity for another 15 years would require nothing new came along to replace them. I recently rewatched a number of DCEU and MCU films. I struggled with MCU, but with the DCEU, it was a surprisingly pleasure to just watch something that looked different. My enjoyment was a involuntary function of too much marvel.
@@t.rae.storyteller Not really? Criticism aside, I think you definitely pointed out a poignant trend among modern MCU. It builds hype by having all content be more build up for other content, or it reels you in with content you’re already familiar with while putting little actual emphasis on the quality of the stories being told; writing has taken a backseat to shallow fan fair, grandeur, a message, or just plain spectacle.
This. Movies in the universe are just there to build that universe. .. they aren’t stand alone movies that are focused. So 100% agree.. which is why I’m kinda not rELALY a fan of the mcu too.. and how because hey had to be int eh same universe, they all have the same look, and feel.. i want directors to have their own poc. And why Edgar wrights antman would have been amazing.. but it was tooo comic booky.. apparently
I agree totally, that the fact that all new movies divides it's attention between several people instead of one is probably a part of the reason I can't get invested in their journey. I've talked about it before that one of the reasons I can't get in to any of the new stuff is bc they either spend too much time world building and/or can't make a small scale story about one person, like Iron Man or Cap America
This brings me to their obsession with going cosmic. IDK why but it always rubbed me the wrong way when they said they wanted to basically leave earth to go to space. Which is why they may be constantly world building. I don't fully understand why they were so confident this was the right call. Sure they said there would always be earth heroes and technically Shang Chi should've been one of them but it barely felt like it. I understand space must be a thing for the MCU so ofc they can't just not do it, and I don't want them to give up on it fully either but IDK, they need to still ground things a little bit I guess.
To be fair, Black Widow is a movie fans have wanted for a very long time, of course people were gonna be excited, especially after the whole panini thing delayed its release. The filmmakers had to live to a very high standard, which they probably knew, but obviously didn't care about, because the movie was very underwhelming.
Wait people were actually hyped for Black Widow pre-release? I wasn't really big into online discussions of the MCU fanbase at the time, so could you maybe explain what exactly people were expecting?
Black Widow was one of the worst movies of 2021, and after a decade, the character deserved better. I mean, the only thing this movie does, is precent Yelena as the new Balck Widow in upcoming movies.
The whole splitting attention between multiple characters in a solo movie really hits the nail on the head with why every movie is feeling mediocre nowadays. They should save that for the teamup movies ONLY. That's the whole point of teamup movies.
The thing is, you’re able to do a lot of great character work with splitting between many characters. Look at 12 Angry Men; there’s 12 characters that each take up a lot of screen time, with no real main character, but it is able to build them all up to be interesting people. The problem comes in when the directors of these movies don’t know how to use the time in an efficient, yet effective manner. You get a lot of them talking about the plot, but you never get to see *who they are* through what they say.
When a movie has literally nothing else going for it, that's when they hit you over the head with how diverse it is. Nowadays I see a movie being advertised as diverse I just assume it's a stinker unless proven otherwise.
Representation isn't a bad thing tho, it's quite the opposite in fact. It's just that most current movie production suck at writing good representation that doesn't feel forced for most people. The only MCU movie that has that stigma imo is Captain Marvel and I'm actually starting to like this one as well besides all the things that went on backstage at the time.
@@MrAlexo01 Representation isn't good or bad, it just is. Treating it as some sort of magical spice that automatically improves whatever it is added to is how you get "diversity done poorly" IE forced diversity. I think the very mindset that causes people to think that diversity axiomatically improves the product causes them to be unable to write "diverse" characters as fully-rendered complex people. Instead you get incredibly safe, tame, boring cardboard cutouts and stereotypes, not to mention goodie-two-shoes mary sues. Why? Because once you treat a character as REPRESENTATIVE OF DEMOGRAPHIC X, you no longer can have character flaws, failures and obstacles to overcome as these will be seen as negative portrayals of Demographic X. Writers have a lot more freedom with straight white male characters because no one is going to burn down the building to protest the portrayal of white dudes. I don't think 12 Angry Men would be a better movie if it were more "diverse" in terms of race or gender.
@@AliRadicali I'm not really trying to say that movies/media that aren't diverse aren't good, because like you said, that would just encourage movie makers to put in "diverse characters" just to earn brownie points with certain audiences. On the other hand, it is kinda weird if you were to only show straight white male characters, because reality is just way more complex than that. You shouldn't really aim to write "diverse characters", but rather characters that just are believable and not just cartboard cutouts or Mary Sues, like you said as well. And again, I'm not saying that you should have to include representation if it either totally doesn't fit in your story or if you don't have any idea what you're writing about.
@@MrAlexo01 it's definitely not ,but I think there's so much focus on it that they kind of forget to put focus into the rest of the story and building characters with actual depth and personality, but you can't say that, because then you'll be that woman in the crowd being called a misogynist because you didn't like the female character.
@@RedMoonSolitary I'm 100% on board with what you said. It may be too much at once. I personally just hope that this phase of "forced representation", "representation done wrong" or whatever you wanna call it is only a short one. Like I said in my other comment in this comment thread, if the only reason you have a character that is {insert minority here} in your story, it probably isn't a good idea, people/company that do this stuff usually don't really care about any of that and do this stuff only for the publicity. Again, you shouldn't write characters that are representation, and representation only (meaning their character is basically non-existant), but rather good characters that happen to be representative. Representation is just the way to go imo, the world just isn't as black and white as it is shown in most media. Does that mean that you should love and accept all representation just because it is? Does that mean that all people that are against inclusive characters are against the groups that this character is trying to represent? Obviously not. Most of the times, people don't hate representation but they hate the way it is done by the companies and the reason they do it. Aaaand, people that go around and call others names just because they don't like a representative character don't really help... I'm sorry, that you experienced stuff like that. I would've liked to say that not all people that are pro-representation are like that, but it's true a lot of them are like that, especially online on Twitter and stuff. I just hope that those experiences don't end up turning you against representation fully, like it probably did for most people that are currently against it.
The MCU formula only works in Marvel. But in other movies... Well no. Disney thought that they could treat Star Wars as Marvel movies, and look how they ended. I think that Scorsese is right, when he said that marvel movies are like an amusment parks. Marvel is awful when we talking to develop characters. If the people want to see the new movie of Spiderman is not because of Tom Holland, is because the old villans from previosuley movies, or the possibility to see Tobey and Andrew return. If the movie weren't have anyone of this factors, nobody would feel interested in it.
MCU movies are carefully laid out & have consistency while using comics as a base. In what way Disney treated Star Wars like marvel cinematic universe? They outright ignored the comics & let Abrams & Rian Johnson do whatever they want with sequel trilogy. Disney practically ignored everything which made MCU successful.
Revisiting Phase 1 was so refreshing for me. 4 individual stories that gave you depth to the main character and their surrounding cast, with nothing more than a post credit scene to tease the eventual team up in Avengers. Simple but effective at telling compelling stories that culminated in a movie where you cared for everyone in it. It feels like Marvel forgot about that after Endgame.
A very good example of a huge franchise I recommend diving into is Lupin the 3rd. It's a show that's been alive and well in Japan for over 50 years, and they do so much different things with it. They let very different creators work on it, yet they always stick to the same formulas. They managed to make new movies and shows feel very fresh because they let different artists with different views work on them. Kind of like we have different interpretations of Joker in the DC films. For example, check out the recent seasons, they go from goofy to extremely dark, and they recently tried 3D animation that worked really well. I think in order to understand a lot of franchises in the west it's good to check out Lupin since it inspired lots of Disney films and shows (and anime of course). It's been a real animation history class for me after I checked out the franchise.
That ironic, because the Marvel movies are based on a franchise that's 80 years old (Marvel before the movies) and basically follows the same core principle as Lupin. They don't need to learn from the Lupin formula, they were already doing it and then used it as a jumping off point to dominate cinemas worldwide. Not to mention that... you know. Goofy, extremely dark, animation? Those are all things Marvel has already done. Goofy is most of the stuff, but there is also things like Punisher, Daredevil and the Spider-verse movies. So they're basically already doing all of those things. It just gives the illusion of only being goofy, because that's what the most successful are. Well... except for the infinity war arc, which was.... really not all that goofy.
If the studio steps in and makes Dr Strange 2 more lighthearted and fun, rather than Raimi's vision of it as a horror movie, then Marvel has not learned the lesson that they HAVE to start telling different stories
Agreed 100% The MCU films feeling more like rides was most apparent to me during No Way Home. When I watched there were only a few other people there and nobody was loud or spoke or anything. The jokes were so awkward in delivery and scenes were so quiet because Marvel intended for their audience to laugh at points and not miss what was said next. Andrew Garfield’s entrance was especially awkward as he just through the portal and the music just cuts out and Ned’s relative let’s out a wail while there is no other sound.
I think what also helped old MCU was that they didn't have a fully known direction. They were still testing things, which gave more total flops, but it also allowed the team to work one piece at a time. Instead of following a single and strict direction that gets whittled down due to arising problems, old MCU allowed more creative freedom and flexibility because they didn't entirely know what the ending would be. That acknowledgement of the unknown forced creators to develop strong movies to serve as a foundation for the next piece.
@@АлексейМомот-щ7о Read what I said. "which gave more total flops, but it also allowed the team to work one piece at a time. Instead of following a single and strict direction that gets whittled down... ...old MCU allowed more creative freedom and flexibility."
And even then, they have the Marvel Creative Committee helping the directors and writers on the development of the movies. Thanks to them, basically all of Phase 1 it's really good, with maybe some flops like Iron Man 2, but they still had _great movies_ like Iron Man 1, The Avengers and The Incredible Hulk. There was creative freedom for the writers and directors on their styles, but also some line to help them to keep this movies consistent and as a faithful adaptation of the source material. But then, Marvel Studios cowardly fired those guys and they started to shit on them. "Uhh, they tried to make Civil War without the Civil War". "Uhhhh, those anti-fun racists tried to cancel Black Panther and Ragnarok", well, the first one it's a lie and the other two movies _sucked_ ass.
I hate when things go mainstream. From movies to games. They get so base to appeal to the massive audience that they soon end up being completely different to how they started.
Thanks for the Intro vs. Sponsor vs. Content vs. Conclusion timestamp labels I know adding those is always a bit tedious but it's a super worthwhile addition
Iron Man to Eternals is damn near polar opposites. One character character study/development in which the non-hero guy is super important to just going Nigel Tufnel and dumping, what, 11 new characters, plus supporting characters, plus villains into one movie that exists within the framework of two dozen other films? What in the hell where they thinking? I did collect Marvel titles between the mid-80s through early 90s and even before Infinity War I hitting a boredom point with the movies. Enjoy IW/EG well enough, but didn't go out of my way to see any of the flicks. Still haven't seen some even when available as a free in-flight movie during long 9 hour flights... I'd rather listen to books on Audible or watch whatever Parks & Rec re-runs they have for the 18th time.
EDIT, EDIT: I want to adress the comments that No Way Home "proves me wrong" by saying that from my point of view, I don't see how it does. I will be making a video about the movie in order to get into more detail but yeah, the way I see it, No Way Home is a very flawed movie and nothing it does undermines any point I make in this video. EDIT: Btw if you liked this video please leave a like and comment cuz it REALLY helps with algorithm!! ❤️ I'M BASICALLY RUNNING ON PURE ADRENALINE AT THIS POINT! I totally agree to everything said and I actually feel MCU movies will just become visual fan service without content... in coming future... However , Inspite of the recent trend of Marvel movies focusing on "style over substance" which is very disappointing direction to take after a payoff like that of the endgame, I'm happy that among all the boring stones like eternals, black widow, falcon etc, SPIDERMAN NO WAY HOME is like a hidden gem among them which focusses on the characters, character arcs, character moments stretching from over 2 decades across different franchises, trying to capitalize that nostalgia effect and taking it to the next level with top class acting, character moments, throwbacks and actually putting effort into tying the plot points within and across these franchises, along with the obvious "Marvel" tropes of - comedy, scale, grandness, visual spectacle. I'm really feeling that Spiderman no way home is like the last glimmer of hope in post-endgame-MCU scenario, where the movie actually has a heart to it and cares for its characters and doesn't shyaway from showing the character depth. They perfectly balanced the spectacle which casual audience want and the heart, character arcs, moments, relatability among the characters and with the characters which the fans who care for these characters want. I was little skeptic when I saw the trailer as whether it would JUST be a bunch of villians and heros from different franchises, (which is not bad and is the ultimate fan service), or the movie also add something that makes us care about these characters more... And this movie absolutely nailed it by threading the needle so perfectly by balancing both style as well as the substance. Both fan service as well as adding to the beloved characters. Not to mention I actually liked portrayals, depth from some characters from the older spiderman franchises more in No way home than the original... This speaks for itself.... How good the attempt is in actually giving a fullfiling story for the beloved characters and see them have their fullfilling moments and adding depth to their already well fleshed out characters...
I looked at the timestamps before watching this entirely. Fairly confused with the 2nd to last title🤣. Yet another great video, appreciate your work put into these, Mate🙌🙌🙌
That’s the thing. Even the pre-phase-4 Marvel movies weren’t as deep or great as the big-old classics, like Star Wars. The CGI bluster already put style over substance back then. Even the original Spider-Man movie, for all its flaws, I’ve always found more memorable than any Avengers film. Infinity War was of course the epitome of character quantity over quality. And Thanos as a villain was a strawman of his own philosophy, and the heroes never beat him on a philosophical level - they just use his own weapons against him.
I really enjoy your honest(with no political bias critique) approach to film media. Not many people do it well, but you are one of the few that do. @@kevynlevi9894 You should know that the Drinker does a lot of satire videos with heavy sarcasm, like @Not Wise said his review on Arcane shows he enjoys female representation when its executed well.
You made some excellent points, and I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who feels like the MCU has been in the slumps recently. I love your editing, too, by the way, very seamless and engaging. But, as someone who has been critical and/or just downright bored of most of the TV shows and movies the MCU has put out lately, No Way Home is an excellent movie that seemed to bring back the magic from the previous Marvel movies that's been missing from their other products. It actually respects the characters in it and creates a poignant and heartfelt story that isn't overshadowed by a big CGI fest and too much MCU humor. Whether this transfers to other Marvel movies down the line remains to be seen, though.
@@Jose-se9pu Yes it was, it's both made by Disney and Sony by collaboration, if you wanna talk about something fully non-made by Disney it's the Venomverse movies
I had really weird epiphany about this when Eternals came out. I'm not a big fan of MCU. I used to enjoy Guardians of the Galaxy, but other than that, these films just feel the same for me. So, when I saw Eternals I was dumbstrucked, because I got an sci-fi epic, with some interesting characters, which managed to get my attention, throughout whole screentime, through characters and their interactions, and overall, stood on it's own legs. It really felt different from other MCU films. And then I've read the reviews. And then it struck me. It's not that I expected MCU films to be different, or more character driven. It's more that I expected MCU films to be unlike MCU films. But that's not what Die hard fans of these expect. It's kinda funny and ironic, I have one friend, with whom I'm watching all MCU films together, and he's always complaining about them doing something not like in the comics, but he doesn't complain about formulaic nature of these films. For him, and many others, that's just part of the charm. These people really do seem to expect these films to be the same. And what I've noticed, is that it became much more fun to theorize about new movies, than watching them. I still go to see them, but not because I expect to have my mind blown, but because I'm interested in what's going to happen within them, and how it's going to affect future films. It's really weird, come to think of it, because it feels like, playing 'what if' scenarios in my mind is much more fun to me, than these movies themselves... Yea, I don't know where I'm going with this, so I'm just going to say, really great essay, got me thinking about a thing or two.
If they make a different movie, half the reviewers and fans don’t like it because it doesn’t feel like an mcu movie, when they make a formulaic movie half the fan base loves it, dislikes it. But it seems that after doctor strange we will be getting more unique adventures.
Just found the channel! Great insight and cultural commentary! People love Stories but the Storyteller must care about it. I remember stories my Grandmothers told me; they told them with complete conviction…it was riveting and are some of my best memories of them.
I can’t help but wonder how much of this “formula” problem is Disney’s doing. Ever since Disney acquired Marvel (just before Age of Ultron, I think), the movies have gotten bigger and samey-er. I keep hearing stories about directors for individual Marvel movies having to contend with executives and management in how the story is told. Films like Thor Ragnarok and Spider-Man Homecoming feel unique because the directors got lucky. I think it would be a mistake to pretend that the people making these movies are mindless followers of the monolith. Disney’s corporatization of moviemaking is harming the creativity of not only Marvel movies, but everything under the Disney umbrella. I hope that there is some way for the audience and the creators to resist against the monolith, as the only thing it’s good for is printing dollars.
You bring up really good points....but after watching no way home twice...I can safely say that it is filled to the brim with character moments and is super focused on the main character and his development....I wish I could say more but I really don't want to spoil the movie for anyone who isn't as lucky as I am to be able to watch it even once.
Marvel is starting to turn into what I call "fast food movies." Rather than being made to explore a character's story within the style of a director, they're meant to be consumable, safe crowd pleasers that hit formulaic beats. Which in my opinion is worse than anything else: People will usually remember a terrible movie or a great movie, but nobody remembers an average movie.
@@jackyjo5395 most of first phase and half of the second had that well written and fast paced plot and pleasantly deep characters. Not extremely original, but extremely nice breath of fresh air. And second Avengers and Winter Soldier... "Trying to get serious", yeah, right. More like overdragged and shallow on the same time. And, after that most are deadly boring "serious business" or transformer-style mindless action.
@@paveloleynikov4715 What are you talking about ? Winter Soldier is regarded as one of the best mcu movies and for me its even number 1 . For me , either that or Civil War was MCU at its peak
14:12 the changes made in that story to allow a impact made by a character was made due to the changes asked by the actors while the writers decided none of those effects which just adds to this video.
Your last argument works extremely well for "Multiverse of Madness." The movie is extremely confusing to people who don't do their homework, you need to know Sam Raimi movies to understand references, you need to watch Wanda vision to even understand the reason the plot exists, you need to watch Doctor Strange to understand why Christine is even important to him, you need to know of the X-men, fantastic 4, captain Marvel, and marvel's what if to just understand why and what is happening and who these people even are. Otherwise it's just an avalanche of references and pretty colours with a wonky horror(?) soup on the side. For someone like me who is super into marvel and has watched every single marvel property and read a ton of comics I actually have the necessary information to understand the wack fest that is happening.
I reckon the screenwriters make complications in the wrong way. They add childhood traumas, complicated relationships and representation groups issues in order to make a character "deeper" and/or "relatable". To be honest, I do not identify myself with Luke Skywalker in The New Hope, but I still enjoy the movie. That's why the plot is higher priority here than "character development". Because going this way, following the template, Woody Allen could make a superhero movie. Beyond-Human sitting in a room with a therapist and flashbacks on their life of childhood traumas and occasional adventures. This sucks. Now wouldn't even bother to pirate those superhero movies.
Okay now I’m just super curious about your thoughts on Moon Knight and how it applies to this. Easily my favorite thing Marvel has done since Endgame just because it finally felt like we weren’t forcing something into a preexisting universe. To me at least, it felt like an actual character study, rather than just a set up to a crossover.
I feel like this video essay should have been posted after Spider-Man: No Way Home came out and Nutsa saw it for herself before judging it. While I agree with her main point over all about the recent Marvel movies focusing on spectacle over building the foundations of characters I, after seeing No Way Home, disagree that it didn't focus the majority of it's time on Peter Parker/Tom Holland, in fact, I'd go so far as to say it is the first time since Homecoming that I truly connected with Tom's version of Peter and felt that they made his version of Spider-Man feel like Spider-Man. Though the comment at the end of her thoughts on it gives me hope that she'll have some thoughts on the movie and how it stacks up will come out later. Other than that, like I said before, I agree with her points overall.
I agree, I was so scared going in to the movie and it being just "hey look at that! Nostalgia!" but luckily they made a movie that actually focused on the main character.
Afraid you've been duped again NWH does not focus on character building, no characters grow or change, and has a nonsensical plot. It is literally two and a half hours of nostalgia
Agreed, no way home IS two hours of fanservice of a movie but its also a soft reboot of Spiderman with the added benefit of cementing Tom Holland interpretation as emotionally interesting and closer to the comics as any other interpretation of Spiderman on the big screen

Scorsese would have not gotten as much flack if he said it now. When he said it, the MCU was at its highest of notes. People have started to feel what he was saying lately though.
The big problem with what Scorsese said is that he attributed it to the fact that it had superheroes. Marvel’s newer stuff is soulless, but that has nothing to do with them being superhero movies. It’s all because they have such a big audience now, that they can pump out movies and people won’t care about its quality. Some Marvel movies have just the same amount of emotional weight as any other movie Scorsese would consider “cinema”, but Scorsese ignores it because he isn’t focusing on the quality of the writing, he’s focused on the genre it’s a part of
Scorsese was right and still is. The MCU isnt "dying" there was nothing there to kill, it was never alive. It's just mutilation right now I suppose because they somehow managed to he worse.
The Gamora who fought and lived like a family with the GOTG is forever gone, Vision isn't likely gonna have human feeling anymore, Heimdall is also dead
I honestly didn't hate Martin Scorsese's remark. He's right, though I simply see them as different genre of films. I want to watch something real/raw/and deep then I obviously won't watch a Marvel film. I mean LOTR was also epic and fun to watch and no one gave a shit about handing over those Oscars towards Peter Jackson and his crew. Though I agee I saw the number of Marvel Shows coming up and I was like HOLD UP! That's just too much, you're going to have to group theses people into sub-groups cause if you start mixing everyone into a film(s) no one is going to have screen time, it's going to be a OD mess.
I watched Shang Chi and loved it but every time I rewatch it I just feel like there is something missing. While I feel like they showed background, it didn’t stick. Not that there needed to be more backstory but just higher quality backstory.
Love your voice. Do you do character voice overs? If not you should consider it. The imperfections are completely charming. Reminds me of Charlie Brown. Great video.

Personally Im dont with Marvel Movies. The story has reached it end for me. I really hate "multi-verse" nonsense. Spiderman Homecoming was one of my favorites, but now that there is all this multiverse stuff, I feel the MCU Peter Parkers story is lessened. Hes now just a vehicle to wow at shinny things like the audience.
Your conclusion is top notch! If you are no longer creative in storytelling, you resort to representation! One of the major issues of MCU now. DC can take advantage of this or maybe not and continue copying MCU.
Marvel start doing movies to survive, they took several risks, think out of the box en several ways and perfected a style while organizing a “bigger thing”. Now-a-days all of this has became standard, and Marvel (as a part pf Disney) is making movies only for the money and the social agenda, producing quantity over quality (because something has to fill the awful Disney +)
One thing that has been bothering me is that they really abandoned the show don't tell. This was bad at shang chi, where characters often sit there and just tell the story. That's lazy at best. But it got really bad at spider man, because as the movie went i noticed they were telling things that were not even happening. There is this scene where Ned finds a bad guy in his notebook, then in the next scene peter says to MJ "thank you, i couldn't have done it without you". But she didn't do anything! And people in the theater went "awww", and i was thinking, what are you awwing for? Why are you buying into this scene at all? The best example would be tony stark's improvements to his armor. The reason for them are not mentioned in the movie, but we know why they are there and it makes it really cool to know. The last three marvel movies i've seen were really heavy on telling you what to think of every scene, like adding a secondary character to say "wow that was so cool". And it really bothers me because they add too much effort into making you believe that it was cool, instead of trying to make something and then letting us decide wether is cool or not.
From someone who always cared more about DC then MCU, I became to love iron man and captain america, MCU helped these characters become big and at the end of the day, mcu is doing way better with fans then star wars is doing. After end game, there's going to be another build up of movies and now shows that are expanding the mcu in so many different ways, they can have my money any day for respecting the fans and great entertainment value.
Funny that as Star Wars was failing, Marvel became the new juggernaut franchise. Only for Disney to decide to take Mavel down the same path they took Star Wars which led to it's decline. Madness.
Technically marvel deviates from there original formula because they would originally just make a film about one character with good writing, sprinkle some hints towards the big bad and increase a bit of the worldbuilding Now they changed that by throwing a bunch of characters in a single movie and hoping one of them sticks, the only comparison I can think of would be buying the same tasty formulaic burger everyday and then suddenly the kitchen decides to stop using spices after a once year special burger, and instead of going back to a mixture of pork, beef and a bit of horse they just used a meat free tofu paste without any additional spices or sauce to flavour it
Great video!! I’ve just discovered your channel one month ago and I’ve watched some of ur videos. I absolutely love them!! Your channel is so criminally underrated, hope it goes up very quick cause you deserve it
Perfectly laid out. My only confusion of it all rests with who is to blame. Is it Disney directly, indirectly, or squarely upon Marvel? Before the acquisition, Marvel was already making moves that year. A film division was made. Iron man 1 dropped, setting a very, very new tone. Then came the new hulk. The MCU concept was already underway. The big gamble was looking as though it may work. Marvel however, would still need the strict yet sometimes ignorant controls of the CEO Ike if they were going to balance creative liberty and financial stability in the new film arena. Ike rescued the company from ruin once before, and wouldn’t let the new success cause misguided spending on new releases. This was truly a new era for the company. Their stories were about to be told as never before. When Disney purchased them later that year (august 2008) the financial constraints were loosening, but Bob Iger out of respect for Ike and honoring of his word, didn’t interfere with Ike’s running of Marvel. Around 2015 tension between Ike and Kevin Feige forced Bob to directly interfere in order to prevent Kevin’s resignation. Kevin wanted to create captain marvel and black panther. Ike didn’t want to spend money on either film. Bob relocated Marvel Studios from under Marvel Entertainment to Walt Disney Studios. Bob then promoted Kevin to chief creative officer, placing the entire television lineup under him as well. Ike’s company structure was collapsed and confiscated from him. Now we are at a point where Disney directly spends as Kevin wants on almost anything, but with a catch I don’t think Kevin had in mind when he pleaded for their direct intervention with Ike. Bob was perfectly content with passively benefiting from Marvel under Ike’s leadership. Now that the most profitable component of the company is directly managed by his own studio head, Ike’s opinions and authority are gone. Now the focus seemed to pivot towards cranking out a lot more content all the way up to mindless filler for their streaming app. Who is to blame here? I really don’t know. To say Ike was ignorant is an understatement. He is the ultimate corporate villain, but kept a tight grip on Marvel and their finances. I think the ultimate blame falls on Disney. Once they directly took over the creative division for film and television from marvel in 2015, a noticeable shift started. I am not surprised that the television shows seemed far superior on Netflix before the restructuring. Most of the Disney+ shows are subpar filler.
Ever since Guardians of the Galaxy, every single MCU movie and mini series has for some reason a random joke thrown in there that lays flatter than paper. And as the years went on, unless the movie is intentionally comedic, the humor begins to deteriorate and definitely kills the momentum. It’s very prominent in Black Widow and Eternals
8:19 I'm not entirely thrilled in the upcoming spider man movie, despite me being a fan of its character even since when I was young. Sam Raimi's (hope i spelled it correctly) Spiderman was a compelling movie that teaches you good moral lessons in life. It also take away the idea of big spectacle being the main focus of the film, just everlasting conclusions. (But the 3rd sequal was weaker compared to the first 2)
The 3rd may have been the weakest but it for sure made itself a name from memes such as “Bully Maguire” which I have to admit are hilarious but can get tiresome quickly. Tho it’s fun that a we get together as a community to celebrate and embrace that movie’s weird flaws
I think you should see the new spider man movie if u haven't yet. To me we got the Spectacle but we even had those personal character building moments that we had in the past. And The fan reactions in the theater were amazing. Feel like I need to see it again. And it left me wanting to see more of these characters.

That's exactly why I am enjoying Hawkeye so much. 🤙🏻 So far it's making plenty of time for character moments, and focusing on smaller battles.

When they do world build lately, it's almost always detrimental.

My love for the MCU died with Tony Stark, can’t even get into the new Spider-Man movies… the magic with the movies is kinda gone for personally.
I think that the overhyping of Marvel movie, like for blackwidow, is really detrimental for the movie especially if it underdelivers.
@@MrAlexo01 people have just always loved black widow and wanted a movie for her, similar to cap or iron and how they each got a movie all about them
Black Widow was one of the worst movies of 2021, and after a decade, the character deserved better.
I mean, the only thing this movie does, is precent Yelena as the new Balck Widow in upcoming movies.
Ah yes cause blame the fans for being excited to expect a good movie...
I think no way home found a really good balance between the old vilians and having a story focused on the main character
It was pretty good at setting the sequel
Actually Marvel has developed great characters along the way lol
Characters are clearly developed. Bruce Banner, Tony Stark, Peter Parker, and Steve Rogers have all changed since their introductions.
The reactions for Thor: Love and Thunder just proves Scorsese’s point even more.
Lmao, stfu, "muh MCU dying" Bruv it was already dead pre endgame
That editing with the video title from Loki rewinding tape is really slick.
If the studio steps in and makes Dr Strange 2 more lighthearted and fun, rather than Raimi's vision of it as a horror movie, then Marvel has not learned the lesson that they HAVE to start telling different stories
Well, that comment didn't age well. The horror movie bits were not only bad, but also ruined Wanda as a character.
I hope that you will create more longer vids. Your content is really profesional well made and fun to watch
Agreed 100%
The MCU films feeling more like rides was most apparent to me during No Way Home.
This sounds counter-intuitive, Star Wars also didn't have a direction and it crashed and burned instead
Sponsor vs. Content vs. Conclusion timestamp labels
I know adding those is always a bit tedious but it's a super worthwhile addition
This was a really well structured essay, I do agree. Good Luck with your channel it's been really good so far!
It has nothing to do with not trusting solo characters. It's all about using solo films as marketing launching pads for future films.
I totally agree to everything said and I actually feel MCU movies will just become visual fan service without content... in coming future...
However ,
Inspite of the recent trend of Marvel movies focusing on "style over substance" which is very disappointing direction to take after a payoff like that of the endgame,
I'm happy that among all the boring stones like eternals, black widow, falcon etc, SPIDERMAN NO WAY HOME is like a hidden gem among them which focusses on the characters, character arcs, character moments stretching from over 2 decades across different franchises, trying to capitalize that nostalgia effect and taking it to the next level with top class acting, character moments, throwbacks and actually putting effort into tying the plot points within and across these franchises, along with the obvious "Marvel" tropes of - comedy, scale, grandness, visual spectacle.
Don't forget; Marvel listens to criticism. It's how they've been making better movies for over a decade now.

NWH, while being set in the MCU, wasnt made by Disney...
Same, I LOVED Eternals, it felt like something new, and then I went to watch critics and I was shocked by the negativity
Eternals left me feeling extremely bored and I completely agree that the MCU is too formulaic. Weird

The movie is extremely confusing to people who don't do their homework, you need to know Sam Raimi movies to understand references, you need to watch Wanda vision to even understand the reason the plot exists, you need to watch Doctor Strange to understand why Christine is even important to him, you need to know of the X-men, fantastic 4, captain Marvel, and marvel's what if to just understand why and what is happening and who these people even are.
Afraid you've been duped again
NWH does not focus on character building, no characters grow or change, and has a nonsensical plot.
@@colm9419 i disagree with you on this however i wont say why (i dont wanna start an argument)
@@SHisiSlipperEdits Sup man, honestly don't want no argument, but even if I don't agree with your opinion I'd love to hear your perspective
What's your view?
You came up in my recommendations and I clicked out of sheer boredom mixed with mild curiosity. I enjoyed your video so much that I watched another. And then another. And another. Omg! Your editing, voice, wit, snark and even that delightful hint of an accent are downright addictive. But it's your very eye-opening and thought-provoking insights that really elevate your channel far above anything I've seen before. Love it. Subscribed.
Loved this review! I’m a massive fan, and these are the fears iv been experiencing since Endgame
I appreciate the fact that you are actually doing good fucking content on RUclips in it's currently state
As a huge MCU fan, this video made me realize stuff I didn’t even think about. Good video:)
That's crazy work and editing right there. Brilliant analysis.
Lately it's been hard to find a channel that doesn't give a biased vibe. Yet here you are.. I loved the video and I'm definitely looking forward to your future content.
Keep up the great work 👍🏼
Now that No Way Home is out I personally think it does go against this trend
Cinema is art
MCU is popcorn theater and there is nothing wrong with that
Scorsese would have not gotten as much flack if he said it now.
He was a prophet
I absolutely hate the fact that no one died in infinity. Gamora, loki, vision including everyone else is back now
Vision is actually technically dead, and Gamora went back to her own time. She's MIA now. But Loki is still too popular to be killed off.
The Gamora who fought and lived like a family with the GOTG is forever gone, Vision isn't likely gonna have human feeling anymore, Heimdall is also dead
You are absolutely at your best when you dig into the writing of something. Very well put together video and one of your best.
Great video.
absolutely love ur work, about to watch literally every single video, cant wait until u do this fulltime & we all get to watch more videos, if thats something u want for urself, bc even if it seems like u cant do that u absolutely can these r the types of videos that youtube watchers want to see, thank u for making these & i hope things r going well, & i hope u make more videos more often, thank u
This video aged really REALLY well.
Yeah, that Martini Scorsiani guy was right all along.
I’m definitely with you for the most part… but No Way Home, in my opinion, is the exception
These vids are great, keep it up!
I love your voice. Both the sound of it, but also the words that come from it. Excellent video.
The only movies that tried to do something else were captain America civil war and winter Soldier in my opinion.
Your observations are so on point. Also, these edits are sick
Ironically, Scorsese was absolutely right, but about the future of the MCU, not about what had come out when he said it.
Your conclusion is top notch!
If you are no longer creative in storytelling, you resort to representation!
One of the major issues of MCU now.
DC can take advantage of this or maybe not and continue copying MCU.
New sub here. You edit good and present superbly. Good script btw. Interesting thoughts
Your content is so good and fun, new subscriber, BAM!
Actually I'm happy you were wrong about far from home, it really focused on the MCU peter's character
Whole movies lose a lot of tension because of the emphasis on the whole "end of the world"
If it happens everytime, you know what the outcome is
Marvel start doing movies to survive, they took several risks, think out of the box en several ways and perfected a style while organizing a “bigger thing”. Now-a-days all of this has became standard, and Marvel (as a part pf Disney) is making movies only for the money and the social agenda, producing quantity over quality (because something has to fill the awful Disney +)
Yesterday I watched all your Videos again and today there is a new one!
I'm gonna do it again!
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
From someone who always cared more about DC then MCU, I became to love iron man and captain america, MCU helped these characters become big and at the end of the day, mcu is doing way better with fans then star wars is doing. After end game, there's going to be another build up of movies and now shows that are expanding the mcu in so many different ways, they can have my money any day for respecting the fans and great entertainment value.
Funny that as Star Wars was failing, Marvel became the new juggernaut franchise. Only for Disney to decide to take Mavel down the same path they took Star Wars which led to it's decline. Madness.
Always a good day when Nutsa uploads. Hail Nutsa! You're the best
Fairly new subscriber. LOVE your vids. LIKED.
Technically marvel deviates from there original formula because they would originally just make a film about one character with good writing, sprinkle some hints towards the big bad and increase a bit of the worldbuilding
Now they changed that by throwing a bunch of characters in a single movie and hoping one of them sticks, the only comparison I can think of would be buying the same tasty formulaic burger everyday and then suddenly the kitchen decides to stop using spices after a once year special burger, and instead of going back to a mixture of pork, beef and a bit of horse they just used a meat free tofu paste without any additional spices or sauce to flavour it
Love this video essay 👏👏👏👏 well done Great job
Thanos was right. That snap could've prevented phase 4
Great video!! I’ve just discovered your channel one month ago and I’ve watched some of ur videos. I absolutely love them!! Your channel is so criminally underrated, hope it goes up very quick cause you deserve it
Honestly, after watching No Way Home, Multiverse of Madness and Love and Thunder, I can say that this video aged like the finest of wine.

I'm not entirely thrilled in the upcoming spider man movie, despite me being a fan of its character even since when I was young.
Sam Raimi's (hope i spelled it correctly) Spiderman was a compelling movie that teaches you good moral lessons in life. It also take away the idea of big spectacle being the main focus of the film, just everlasting conclusions.
(But the 3rd sequal was weaker compared to the first 2)
Yeah, I think it’s just gonna be more fan fair and everything else will he broken because of it.
Its gonna be all spectacle and Whedon jokes.
Man it's emotional as fuq. And probably if not the best, then one kf the best spider man movie out their
The 3rd may have been the weakest but it for sure made itself a name from memes such as “Bully Maguire” which I have to admit are hilarious but can get tiresome quickly. Tho it’s fun that a we get together as a community to celebrate and embrace that movie’s weird flaws
Take it from someone that has seen No Way Home, it's actually a good and enjoyable movie and I can only recommend seeing it for yourself.
I think you should see the new spider man movie if u haven't yet. To me we got the Spectacle but we even had those personal character building moments that we had in the past. And The fan reactions in the theater were amazing. Feel like I need to see it again. And it left me wanting to see more of these characters.
I was completely unaware that Raid Shadow Legends still existed 😂
You're one of the few RUclipsrs who actually speak logically and go over topics that are very controversial and you're opinion is always right i think that you deserve way more subs than you have because you're one of my favorite people to watch
Wow, this is a super well done video!! You did a fantastic job of expressing your opinions and giving examples that back it up, as well as made some really solid points 👌🏼
Ngl tho, I’m kinda interested to hear your thoughts on NWH, as I feel like it was an MCU movie that actually felt different than most recent MCU movies
"Bad writer creates bad movies, Bad movies creates good writer, Good writer creates good movies, Good movies creates bad writers" .....
Loved the content, loved the commentary, loved the editing. Thank you for posting. I am eager to go through your entire catalogue.
All of your videos are well done! You have very refreshing takes. I'm looking forward to more content from you. Thanks for your hard work.
Congrats on getting the sponsor! It's the sponsor, you guys!
Everybody in here talkin bout the points of the argument but can we give some attention to the custom title cards? The mask around Loki is smooth af lol.
Gave the Galaxy 3 definitely looks like it's going to be cinema...Let's hope James's Gunn doesn't disapoint
