It is _impossible_ to capture a performance of Sternklang on CD. The piece is literally "Space Music". A friend of mine was a performer at the Los Angeles premiere (in conjunction with the Olympics in 1984). The piece was performed in a park -- a LARGE park, with trees. The musicians are divided into five groups which are dispersed throughout the park, roughly in a huge circle. The groups are placed so far apart from each other that they can barely hear each other. A Tam Tam player stands alone in the center of this huge circle, and serves to periodically synchronize all the groups. Otherwise, the groups proceed with their own music, oblivious of the other groups. What links all these groups together is the "Sound Runner" (Klangläufer). This is a player with a melody instrument in his or her hands, who will stand by one group until he or she hears a "model" (musical extract) that he or she wants to travel with. He or she then walks to another group, while repeating the model. When he or she arrives, the group listens to the model that the Sound Runner has brought them, and integrates it into whatever music they are playing at the time. While the Sound Runner is bouncing around between the different groups, the audience is free to walk wherever it wants (without inhibiting the players). We were afraid that there was going to be rain that day, and there _was_, but it stopped before the performance. The grass was wet, and it was cold, but it was still a unique musical experience. I wish someone in Southern California would perform it again.
Was that the one in Sylmar? They had CalArts performers... The substituted in electric guitars for some instruments. That was very cool. I think it was probably the same performance.
Amazing that you witnessed the premiere! Well, I think the recording is beautiful in itself. Off course you will have this with a lot of music, that it something completely different listening to the piece live or on a CD. RUclips is again something different as the quality is often quite poor. Listening to the CD with a good pair of headphones or quality speakers give a good feel of the piece. Then, a quality performance is off course the best thing! I am happy to announce that there will be a performance of this piece in Köln /Cologne Germany 30.april 2020. Thanks for uploading this. I used to have the LPs. Along with Stimmung, this is my favourite Stockhausen work. Hypnotic and quite magical! (I have part of it as the ringtone on my mobile - yes, sad!!)
It's a music for concentrated listening in meditation , for the singking of the individual into the cosmic whole ..intended as a preparation for beings from the other stars and their arrival .. interesting !!
la désintégration musicale par les effets technologiques , une pure merveille futuriste autant que dans un passé très lointain quand l'homme n'était qu'à l'état subatomique dans une supernovae d'ou allait naître le système solaire , merci
if I'm not mistaken, one of the sung "chord groups" is an overtone series on B-flat, which I think is the same as Stimmung...so yes, i think your description is exactly correct haha
I also want to announce that there will be a performance of this piece in Köln / Cologne, Germany on 30. April. 2020. Stockhausen Sternklang Park - music for five groups Circa 70's New Age culture with their emphasis of it's highly ecletic structure gave lots of impact to musical progress . This works by Stockhausen from his 70's era was one of New Ageish spirit . Sternklang is sacred music. The composition is written for groups of singers and instrumentalists , which are widely separated from each other spatially. The interesting side of it each group should be able to hear each other , above all , when a group has pause. I admit Stockhausen always made a chalenging conceptual music that way beyond too far from his era .. it always ask listening participant to keep the silence that is necessary for its enlightment .
Clearly influenced some of the tracks on Lighthouse from Shadow Ring. Can't fuckin believe I haven't heard this one yet. Listened to Stimmung a million times and this is better I think.
I admit I prefer other works from Karlheinz Stockhausen. For example, the previous one which influenced this work, "Stimmung" is one of my favorite pieces from him. Somehow....without the visual and spatial aspect I cannot enter too much in this work.
In your description you say the the piece bears the number 34 in his catalog, but it clearly bears the number 18, hence the number 18 on the cover of the piece. Number 34 is SAMSTAG aus LICHT / SATURDAY from LIGHT. www.stockhausencds.com/.
I finally heard it live last year. An overwhelming experience.
You're easily overwhelmed. : )
Truly mindblowing music, like messages from the stars. There is nothing comparable to Stockhausen at his best.He was a one -off.
PERFECT MUSIC FOR MINDEXPANDING EXPERIENCE!
Where's this nutty thing been all my life?!

One of the best concerts I ever experienced in my life!

I agree: this is a masterful Stockhausen work.
Nothing sad about having this as your ringtone. On the contrary, it’s unique & cool 🤘
If I,knew it's was going to be this good I would made a cup of tea. Shroom tea.
Time to bong out...
Nice
So strange but quite soothing, epic even, spacious and intricate
It's a music for concentrated listening in meditation , for the singking of the individual into the cosmic whole ..intended as a preparation for beings from the other stars and their arrival .. interesting !!
I bought this on CD last year. Amazing music! Especially the bird noise in the "Kombination 3" part.
Perhaps the greatest "Space Opera" of all!
quite good...
Thanks for the music!!

It sounds like they were going to play Stimmung but decided to drop some acid first.
I had a very similar association listening to it for the first time :)

I really like the idea and concept but I guess I could enjoy it more if the groups play more melodic music instead of improvising a lot.
You have to RELAX into what you don't like ... and then you'll have a broader appreciation of the world around you.
Full Stockhausen 720p ? Come at me, my hero! :D
Krank!
