Too true, my favourite line in this song. Ronnie was the real deal, philosopher-poet-musician. Not so many of them around. Pretty lucky to have this awesome piece of footage floating around on RUclips.

One upside to this song not being very well known is that you are not likely to ever hear some talent show twat release a horrible version of it or hear it advertising a car, phone or whatever the fcuk it is. It will always be the pure poetry of Ronnie Lane straight out of that 70s musical golden era. Fingers crossed 🤞 anyway. Hope I haven’t jinxed it now...

Ronnie Lane was an amazing songwriter, musician and human being. One bit of advice I took from Ronnie was "if you learn a musical instrument you will always have a friend" and thank you for that Ronnie, a hero a legend and sadly missed ❤️

My girlfriend and I babysat for Ronnie and Kate in St Margarets, near Twickenham in the early 1980s. We sat through many great jam sessions in his huge lounge. He had James Honeyman Scott (of the Pretenders) there once and a couple of old black trumpeters. What an evening's entertainment!

In honor of Ronnie Lane's birthday, I'm listening with my son Ivor (6 years old, and a huge Ronnie Lane fan). While I feel that he was not afforded the chance to realize the entirety of his vision, much of his work is tremendous. Living with MS myself, listening to Ronnie Lane is a poignant, and sometimes harrowing, experience. Regardless of anything, though, I am stunned without fail by the loveliness of this song.
My son Ivor doesn't usually have much to say, or let on that he does. Three years ago, this song was playing at our home as I was inan adjacent room doing some-or-other mundane thin. IWondering where my children were, I looked around and found Ivor right up close to the speakers, transfixed and focused, singing every word.

On hearing the opening chords I am instantly transported back 40 odd years to the time I used to listen to this classic. Lost and forgotten now for all these years, I suddenly remember listening to Radio Luxembourg late nights with the radio pressed up against my ear. Being in my mid-teens I could then, just about reach the vocal key of Ronnie. This is indeed a treat and welcome return of a dear old friend!

    • @KebabMusicLtd
      @KebabMusicLtd 8 лет назад +3

NO! NO! NO! I lied. It wasn't Radio Luxembourg. It was K-tel: Music Explosion on cassette. It had Paul Da Vinci, The Rubettes, Terry Jacks, and of course, Stephanie De Sykes. I don't quite remember how The Pearls song 'Guilty' went. I think I tended to fast forward, or rewind the tape whenever I got to this one. Maybe I should give it a listen. Indeed, I am going to find all the tracks on that cassette and play them over!!!

I grew up in the 70's east end London and remember my older brothers going to the faces last concert , my generation were the punks , the pistols , clash and many others , too many to mention , later on I became a studio guitarist and recorded in places where mixes had been done of the faces and even recordings , I became aware of Ronnie and had crossed paths with Rod and Ronnie wood in various places , I began to hear songs and stories and looked into Ronnies work and I feel that he was a real one , a rare one , a songsmith and a gentleman ,
Every now and then someone comes along who inspires across the generations and we can all them a great ..... I feel inspired by his legacy and his back to nature ethos .... The poacher and songs that evoke feelings that conjure up images and or take you there are a blessing , ooh la la Ronnie X god's got some good company in you , rock on sir 👑🍀✨🏹

Ah the 70s, long summer walks with little to no traffic, mini skirts and slim pretty girls , Great music and vibes, when a Politician spoke you believed him and if he did wrong they resigned, A country that for the most part was at peace with itself,
This makes me so sad for a England long gone ,and this song is so evocative of those times.
RIP for Ronnie and his England.

As others have noted, Ronnie Lane was a true poet and philosopher, and by all accounts a lovely, kind and thoughtful person. Although not hailing from Newham, I worked there (Principal Electrical Engineer) for a good few years. Whilst very familiar with the area, by virtue of my job, I hadn't realised (until today!) a road had been named after him in Manor Park - even though I had involvement in lots of projects (tall blocks) close to the road!

Was fresh and bright and early
    I went towards the river
But nothing still has altered just the seasons ring a change
    There stood this old timer
For all the world's first poacher
His mind upon his tackle and these words upon his mind
Bring me fish with eyes of jewels
    And mirrors on their bodies
Bring them strong and bring them bigger
    Than a newborn child
Well I've no use for riches
And I've no use for power
And I've no use for a broken heart
I'll let this world go by
    There stood this old timer
For all the world's first poacher
His mind upon his tackle and these words upon his mind
Bring me fish with eyes of jewels
    And mirrors on their bodies
Bring them strong and bring them bigger than a newborn child

Got lost 5 miles from home today, as the fog came right in and the Derbyshire tops are a bit featureless. Walked miles further than I was expecting (dog loved it). Proper seldom trodden paths...this song came into my head. Timeless, idyllic, elegiac, (Samuel Taylor Coleridge argued that the elegiac is the form "most natural to the reflective mind"). Shows you can still find mystery and wonder on your doorstep even when you think you've seen it all. Miss you Ronnie.

Duh, only just realized comments and responses worked like this! Nice to know people share the feeling and can be nice.I wrongly thought internet comments would be trolling.Phyllis, I grew up where the furthest you could see was 3 miles, it is all hills., I do like your part of the country, "Big Sky", etc. I've been there a lot.It still feels unsettling, put me in the great American planes and I'd be in bits.I guess you are what the Cumbrians call"hefted", linked to your place. Thanks to superBking1340, assuming a lot here, I love my little suzuki, geared down, sticky tyres.Peak district B road bliss.Love to all.

+a j Carter hi all, thought to say to you if this song is bringing memories, please see the three part story of Ronnie lane and Slim Chance doing tours and playing their music through hard times, all around the UK countryside etc...seems a good fit to your comments, cheers!

+a j Carter I thought the same as you re; Trolls, happily so far mistaken. The beauty of this is I get to listen to Mr Lane when replying! I too grew up in Derbyshire, so many happy memories. Good to talk to you.
