Too true, my favourite line in this song. Ronnie was the real deal, philosopher-poet-musician. Not so many of them around. Pretty lucky to have this awesome piece of footage floating around on RUclips.
One upside to this song not being very well known is that you are not likely to ever hear some talent show twat release a horrible version of it or hear it advertising a car, phone or whatever the fcuk it is. It will always be the pure poetry of Ronnie Lane straight out of that 70s musical golden era. Fingers crossed 🤞 anyway. Hope I haven’t jinxed it now...
Paul weller covered it on a live at the BBC album in 2008 that's where I heard it first he pays tribute to Ronnie Lane at the end of it by saying........ RONNIE LANE. Brilliant song and was half the brains behind my favourite band the SMALL FACES. GBNF RONNIE PLONK LANE ❤
Ronnie Lane was an amazing songwriter, musician and human being. One bit of advice I took from Ronnie was "if you learn a musical instrument you will always have a friend" and thank you for that Ronnie, a hero a legend and sadly missed ❤️
wrote about my brother and how Ronnie was so shit as fishing and especially hunting haha! his music lives on through those that feel it, it is a way of life, the lane attitude! mother and Ronnie wrote loads of beautiful music, just people don't realise that when it's says lane and Lambert that's Luke's and Reubens mum, my mum, Ronnie sons! love reading theses comments! Nearly fell over one day when I heard it on local Irish radio one day. Had no idea the DJ had such discernment! Had to wonder how many people in the county had even heard it before. Such a beautiful, sublime and perfectly 70s song. Ronnie was some kind of genius.
My girlfriend and I babysat for Ronnie and Kate in St Margarets, near Twickenham in the early 1980s. We sat through many great jam sessions in his huge lounge. He had James Honeyman Scott (of the Pretenders) there once and a couple of old black trumpeters. What an evening's entertainment!
@@deborahhercun-pamplin508 I can't quite remember the location. I lived on St Margarets Road, near the Ailsa Tavern and it wasn't too far from there. It was a 5 storey Georgian house on a bend, but been looking at Google maps and can't find it!
In honor of Ronnie Lane's birthday, I'm listening with my son Ivor (6 years old, and a huge Ronnie Lane fan). While I feel that he was not afforded the chance to realize the entirety of his vision, much of his work is tremendous. Living with MS myself, listening to Ronnie Lane is a poignant, and sometimes harrowing, experience. Regardless of anything, though, I am stunned without fail by the loveliness of this song. My son Ivor doesn't usually have much to say, or let on that he does. Three years ago, this song was playing at our home as I was inan adjacent room doing some-or-other mundane thin. IWondering where my children were, I looked around and found Ivor right up close to the speakers, transfixed and focused, singing every word.
+Benb Gallaher Soaking in Ronnie's genius today along with you. Timeless, beautiful, poignant, heartbreaking and humorous. Loved him. He was a lovely man.
+Benb Gallaher play my gran daughter this and some old motown songs ,,,,she says they are crap and old ,,,makes me so proud when she is singing then when she thinks no one is listening lol
On hearing the opening chords I am instantly transported back 40 odd years to the time I used to listen to this classic. Lost and forgotten now for all these years, I suddenly remember listening to Radio Luxembourg late nights with the radio pressed up against my ear. Being in my mid-teens I could then, just about reach the vocal key of Ronnie. This is indeed a treat and welcome return of a dear old friend!
NO! NO! NO! I lied. It wasn't Radio Luxembourg. It was K-tel: Music Explosion on cassette. It had Paul Da Vinci, The Rubettes, Terry Jacks, and of course, Stephanie De Sykes. I don't quite remember how The Pearls song 'Guilty' went. I think I tended to fast forward, or rewind the tape whenever I got to this one. Maybe I should give it a listen. Indeed, I am going to find all the tracks on that cassette and play them over!!!

My brothers favourite song of all time, he loved ELO, Rod Stewart to name a few. But this was by far one of the best. I picked this up as an impulse buy from the discount bin of Woolworths I think in the 70s. The best pence per pleasure purchase EVER! Has a sincerity that is completely missing from music since that decade.
Hail hail Ronnie Lane! I am not British, but this wonderful, delightful tune, as Debris, anymore, and all of his solo work, transports me to a world of feeling, and warmth, and truth. Thank you Spiritual Boy.
As others have noted, Ronnie Lane was a true poet and philosopher, and by all accounts a lovely, kind and thoughtful person. Got lost 5 miles from home today, as the fog came right in and the Derbyshire tops are a bit featureless. Walked miles further than I was expecting (dog loved it). Proper seldom trodden paths...this song came into my head. Timeless, idyllic, elegiac, (Samuel Taylor Coleridge argued that the elegiac is the form "most natural to the reflective mind"). This is so English, it shouts it out from the first chord to the last . Possibly the my favourite song of all time. A genius RIP

One of the best songs ever recorded. As soon as that intro starts, I’m transported back to 1974.
Me too. As I said in an earlier post, had it on a K-Tel compo LP.
Loved How Come too. Charted around Feb 1974, if my memory serves me correctly.
Me too. Same whenever I hear "How Come".
Same Here, i remember walking to school and hearing this on my little transistor radio,
Me too, when I was a poacher. Pure class.👍
this song should have been a world wide hit, a genuine classic.
Absolutely beautiful song and a crying shame it only got to No 36.....a completeiy under rated artist if ever there was one. RIP Ronnie.
Back in 1974 in the halcyon days of Capital Radio, when the station produced its own chart on Saturday mornings, The Poacher got as high as No.2...!
He wrote some fantastic songs, so glad to have been born in the fifties and growing up with great music, Ronnie Lane was one of the best.

1974 .........wow where are you my teens for not one second would I wish it back grat song great times my dads favourite song miss you so much .
Was fresh and bright and early
I went towards the river
But nothing still has altered just the seasons ring a change
There stood this old timer
For all the world's first poacher
His mind upon his tackle and these words upon his mind
Bring me fish with eyes of jewels
And mirrors on their bodies
Bring them strong and bring them bigger
Than a newborn child
Well I've no use for riches
And I've no use for power
And I've no use for a broken heart
I'll let this world go by
There stood this old timer
For all the world's first poacher
His mind upon his tackle and these words upon his mind
Bring me fish with eyes of jewels
And mirrors on their bodies
Bring them strong and bring them bigger than a newborn child
