At 1:05 , you can see what i am describing and explaining at the top of this page (i mean pitch adjustments on short final) . The day the film was done was not only windy but also unpredictable in term of wind speed and direction . I was lucky to catch the AN124 in a such situation . You wouldn't have say anything if it was a Cessna 172 because we are all used to see light planes being shakes by winds . The same effects on the Antonov looks unreal . that is my explanation . Thank you
You have to keep in mind that with the main gear on the 124 so close to the fuselage it actually can't flare like a standard airliner. It needs to land rather flat or trail strike.
Come on ... nothing wrong with that landing. Going around would waste enough fuel to power a small car for a year. Just a few adjustments and on the ground we are. Good stuff ....
Thats a dumb way of looking at it, the problem was the center of gravity wasnt properly accounted for. You can tell thats the case because each time the pilot would input a down command and relieve control pressure the plane would pitch up, indicating an out-of-trim (but most likely balance) situation. Not hard to assume since there was no microburst or windshear at all.

Exactly. That’s what my flight instructor said. If you survive, it’s a good landing. If someone else can use the plane after you it’s considered to be a perfect landing
I can't decide if this a great landing in the conditions (it's not clear just how bad they were) or an extremely dangerous landing at excessive speed. Wind shear would explain why they came in fast, but this was a classic 'balloon' landing, rarely seen with a massive machine like this. Great video!

AngolaCel German pilots are the best: March 2008 - Captain prevents A-320 airbus from hitting the runway with the wing during heavy crosswinds in Hamburg airport while the co-pilot, a female, who just received her license, was attempting to land. US pilots are the best: US airways flight 1549 - captain ditches an A-320 airbus on the Hudson river, saving lives of 155 people. They are all the best.
To me it looks like the plane was too high and instead of reducing power the pilot nose dived to make a landing. A maneuver not advised for civilian or military but Russians do things their way, often risky but it makes capable pilots. This pilot knew what he was doing - right stuff!
* Called Afghan visit * Since all landed (Soviet) Russian pilots. On landing, you can get a Stinger in the car, thanks to the U.S., then kill its soldiers their weapons.
He was high on approach there's no doubt about that, but still very well piloted and it's not uncommon to see such frequent 'nose-down' landinds like that with huge cargo aircraft. If you look at aircraft such as the C-130 Hercules, it does the same exact thing where it has to pitch, nose down in order to drop altitude on landings. Its really amazing and on a similar note (but actually a different concept) is the nose-down or pitch down attitude on aircraft such as the B-52 which is caused by the anhedral angle of the wings. If you notice the B-52 actually takes off with it's nose down and even flies mostly with its nose down because of the anhedral position of the wings - the wings angle down at the tips, as opposed to dihedral where the wings angle upwards at the ends.
this is how high wing aircraft like C-130, C-17 land as well. for such aircraft, flaring at the last moment does not happen the way we see for low wing passenger planes.
And what's happening at 01:10 please ? If you are talking about the Airbus A319 taxiing in front of the Antonov while he is landing, it is normal . Check out the airport chart near holding point runway 22L . From the camera point of view, the airbus is in the foreground and the Antonov in the background
sabre65xx Whenever you are in doubt of a landing, it is always better to go around and try again. Being too high on a landing runs the risk of a runway overshoot while lowering the nose increases the airspeed, not only making an overshoot more likely but also risking a tire blowout from the landing gear.
Lord Baldur I'm a retired commercial pilot and current flight instructor and charter/corporate pilot with 10,000+ hrs.. I know all about go-arounds. I teach pilots how to perform them and under what circumstances they should be performed. That being said, I'm sure that the crew of the aircraft in the video considered the length of the runway, landing weight, specific aircraft performance characteristics, terrain at the departure end of the runway and every other pertinent factor when deciding to complete the landing. Their approach did appear high but was this a training flight that included a simulated emergency landing? Who knows. A little smoke from the tires hardly means that the crew should have aborted. It only means that the aircraft was slightly yawed when touching down. You can watch planes land at any airport and see this in probably 10% of the landings on some days depending on winds. A huge plane with that many wheels is much more prone to this. When I am instructing, I place my students in circumstances where they are forced to make landings that do not look pretty, but they are successful landings. They did not overrun the runway so apparently their planning was just fine.
sabre65xx So how much does AvGas weigh? In terms of accidents, just because a pilot is experienced, does not mean they cannot make mistakes. Most crashes in airliners happen because a seasoned pilot makes a move that a student pilot knows never to do. Case in point, the Air France flight that crashed off of Brazil. That accident would have been avoided if the pilot lowered the nose. Same with the Buffalo crash. If commercial pilots were perfect, then there would be a lot more accidents. And while this pilot clearly made a successful landing, it was a hard landing and further away from the beginning of the runway.

essence "of the Afghan landing" that the plane in order to avoid the danger of air defense (Stinger) flies at high altitude to the airport and began a sharp decline in a spiral 3-4 approach without departing from the protected area of the airport. a very sharp decline, with a vertical speed of about 90 kilometers per hour. do pilots aces!
tralalou Hay there is no aircraft carrier. a Antonov no matter what size, will not be able to land on an aircraft carrier. this is a tough landing on a normal airport. think before writing the description.
think before posting a stupid comment like that. The description was about the style of the landing not about actually landing a Ruslan on an aircraft carrier.
Hey Brian ! Read the description carefully before commenting . I have written the aircraft carrier words between "…" . Do you know the meaning of these symbols ?
Politics aside it's interesting to see how the Russians have monetized these aircraft. If you want something big halfway around the world in a day and it's costing you a fortune every day it isn't there you call the Russians. I first saw one of these at a special show at Lindbergh Field in San Diego back in 1988 or so. When they were trying to get the APU started it was making a loud droning howl. The guy behind me in the stands said "that's the spirits of all the cossacks that died building the sonofabitch"
I thought the Pilot executed a fairly neat landing, given the huge beast of an aeroplane he was controlling. Anyone want to have a go? Then Shut the Fuck Up until the day you do any better. It's very easy to criticize, quite another thing entirely to actually have ago at it yourself!
I'll tell you why, tralalou. Because regalmeister knows about airplanes what you or I know about the string theory, which amounts to very little. :) Thanks for the video. I once saw an AN 124 unloading on the cargo ramp at Mexico City. It was HUGE!!! There were nine 18 wheelers lined up in single file along its fuselage and it was still larger than those trucks. Thanks for sharing.

These planes have to come in almost perfectly flat as the landing gear is so close to the fuselage.

It's not Ukrainian, it was developed in USSR, USSR=RUSSIA , so, it's Russian plane.
Same as An-225
C un Russe! Il a pas froid aux yeux! Belle video, merci!
essence "of the Afghan landing" that the plane in order to avoid the danger of air defense (Stinger) flies at high altitude to the airport and began a sharp decline in a spiral 3-4 approach without departing from the protected area of the airport. a very sharp decline, with a vertical speed of about 90 kilometers per hour. do pilots aces!
Agreed. Saw one such landing at Ras Al Khaimah, UAE many years ago. It was performed by a TU-134 and was remarkable for how neatly it was executed.

@@iliazubov1 Great videos. Thank you for sharing.
smooth landing , skilled pilot
tralalou Hay there is no aircraft carrier. a Antonov no matter what size, will not be able to land on an aircraft carrier. this is a tough landing on a normal airport. think before writing the description.
No need to be rascist!
mellersfc where is there racism in this post. lol. Just because you think i am a racist it does not mean i am a racist. rofl
think before posting a stupid comment like that. The description was about the style of the landing not about actually landing a Ruslan on an aircraft carrier.
Hey Brian ! Read the description carefully before commenting . I have written the aircraft carrier words between "…" . Do you know the meaning of these symbols ?
All in all a pretty good landing given such a short final.
Looked good to me.
I thought the Pilot executed a fairly neat landing, given the huge beast of an aeroplane he was controlling. Anyone want to have a go? Then Shut the Fuck Up until the day you do any better. It's very easy to criticize, quite another thing entirely to actually have ago at it yourself!
Check the bird out near the engine at 1:02
What is the problem. It was a good landing.
1:17 what was "oof" worthy?
i am not accountable for that "oof", sorry
+Enboy Crazy
I'll tell you why, tralalou. Because regalmeister knows about airplanes what you or I know about the string theory, which amounts to very little. :) Thanks for the video. I once saw an AN 124 unloading on the cargo ramp at Mexico City. It was HUGE!!! There were nine 18 wheelers lined up in single file along its fuselage and it was still larger than those trucks. Thanks for sharing.
He took a turn and landed in less than 1:30 minutes...... He's Narendra Modi of pilots.
Hell of a cross Captain!
