I knew you were going to hate Tarot, haha! Saw it last night & I didn't realize it was PG13 until the first kill. The monsters/ghosts looked good, but other than that, you're right that this is a horror movie for very young people.

Made Abigail and the 45th anniversary theatrical release of Alien my double feature yesterday. Alien still holds up in theaters after 45 years, and Abigail is quite possibly my favorite movie of the year so far, and that's with me being a huge Godzilla fan and having seen GxK 3 times already.
The fact that we got a January horror film at the start of the Summer Movie Season is a travesty.

Things I know from minimal tarot engagement;
The worst of the minor arcana is the Nine of Swords, no good options in it.
And everyone assumes that the worst of the Major is the Death Card, but not really, because it mostly has to do with the end of one cycle/start of another; both The Devil, and especially The Falling Tower cards are significantly worse than Death.
Exactly. And none of them ACTUALLY kill you lmfao. I haven't seen the film but I just know that they got pretty much everything wrong about tarot cards.
Sometimes even the devil card isn’t bad. Tarot imagery is satirical and abstract. People who don’t know about it take it too literal.
You mean 10 of swords. 9 of swords is the "warning! Imminent danger!" Card. 10 of swords is "well if isn't the consequences of your own actions!" card. And arguably Devil isn't that bad, it's more of a "seek help" card. You're right in that the Tower is bad news tho.
One thing funny about the movie was that the group of supposedly very close friends was not really believable in an American college, with "diversity' carried to the extreme covering ethnicities from all corners of the world. That was apparently a studio decision and it also applied to the characters' boyfriends and girlfriends. Other than that, the characters had little personality to speak of and were just waiting to be killed. It was a cross between the Ouija films and the Final Destination movies. I agree that the film was mainly or those under 12. I doubt the interpretation of the tarot cards and the mumbo jumbo about horoscope were meant to make any sense, but I doubt a preteen or early teen audience would care.
Being a horror fan is like thrift shopping. You have to sift through all the Tarots to get to the Barbarians.

It is truly mind-boggling that a premise for a horror movie like this is almost writing itself with the different cards and possibilities around that, and they mess it up.
I feel like this movie wasn't that bad. The monsters ere cool (except the magician because tf was that?) and for a pg13 the kills were decent. The plot was really eh to be fair. The Strangers Chapter 1 is a better choice when going to the theaters.

Movies like this is why PG-13 horror is so hated on. Movies Like The Ring are amazing but then you get slop like Tarot, Night Swim and Imaginary. Even something like Five Nights At Freddy's had some decent enough kills for its rating. PG-13 can be good for horror but there has to be a unique premise or fun execution or even being genuinely scary

Personally, my favorite PG-13 go-to horror movies are Killer Klowns From Outer Space and Krampus(2015)

Just walked out of it and couldn’t help but think “ I can’t wait to hear Cody shit on this thing” 😂.
So, the moment I saw the trailer, I thought it would be lame. But like you, I figured “fuck it, what if it surprises me?”. Nope. As a person who knows a little sum’n sum’n about astrology and tarot, I’d bet my tits this script was at least partially written by AI. Like somebody compiled some of the most basic information about new age spiritualism that you can get from a swift google, and threw in some vocabulary words. The acting and dialogue felt so Disney channel and unrealistic. So, I agree with you on the target audience thing. I also agree that there was nothing original about it, other than it being centered around tarot, instead of Ouija or an old book. It reminded me of One Missed Call. Remember that terrible fucking movie? 😂
Anyway, I had to stop myself from falling asleep, and the only things I personally liked were some of the creepy imagery and the card designs.
With that, I’ll hop off the soapbox and just say that I appreciate your channel and your comment section😊🤘🏽

This movie was terrible, and I expected that going in but I didn’t mind it. Terrible horror movies like this, ouija, countdown, wish upon, etc… are comfort food movies to me for whatever reason.

I took my wife with me to see Late Night with the Devil and the trailer for Tarot came on and I leaned over to her and just said 1 word, “trash”
Sue me. I actually enjoy this film. Solid characters, solid performances, effective jump scares. Great intense scenes, great mood and atmosphere, and great score. And for a PG13 horror films there were some creative kills without being too gory and bloody. And so what if it is PG13. If you know me I am a carnage candy nut. But at the same time there's NOTHING wrong to have a PG13 horror film that is catering to the middle school/high school crowd. That age demographic need horror too.

I liked the premise, but man it fell flat. But what really got me was HOW STUPID THEY ALL WERE. Told not to run? RUNS. Hiding from a killer? HIDES IN A LITERAL BOX. Need to stick together? NAH AMMA DIP FOR REASONS. And then there's the exposition character that was built up that is just useless in the end. They missed the mark in making this fun imo because they make it sound like they can twist their tarot readings to survive the ordeal, but we only see this literally off screen in a post credits scene. Otherwise, it's just ignored.
This really bums me out, was hoping for an interesting “13 ghosts” kinda deal, with all the interesting creature designs from the cards. Could have been fun and of COURSE THEY RUINED IT. Fuckery
This whole movie felt like an ad campaign for Universal's Halloween Horror Nights. Also, it seems we have a new Lin Shaye; the actress portraying the "original survivor" (Olwen Fouéré) also playing Sally in the Texas Chainsaw shlock-fest from 2022.
A couple days ago it popped up for me on Netflix, with a 95% match to what I like, apparently. I took the bait, ‘cause I do like some paranormal movies, and I’ve been doing Tarot (and dabbling in related stuff), more on than off, for about twenty-six years. My expectations were low, but had they been low enough to be accurate, I wouldn’t have watched it at all. I think the premise had potential, but it was poorly executed. The acting and directing were underwhelming. As this review mentions, the characters were two-dimensional and any development within or between them wasn’t very believable. I was annoyed by how unrealistically they reacted to the traumatic unexpected deaths of their friends. Also, although it wasn’t really important for it to be realistic, the response of law enforcement and the practical elements of the situation was so hard to believe it distracted me a bit.
I wasn’t bothered by the lack of gore. I find too much of it detracts from my enjoyment of most movies, unless the kind of movie needs it. This being a paranormal thriller, it doesn’t necessarily need gore the way something like a slasher does. Then again, this one was so boring that maybe it would have helped. However, it was something I sought out when I was much younger. Becoming a mother definitely changed my tolerance for that sort of thing.
I’d just like to add that not all adolescent and teenage girls fit the stereotype in this review. Ok, dude here probably knows that, but I feel a need to defend myself… I started out, at ten/eleven with old classics like Nosferatu and Night of the Living Dead. Hitchcock was my favorite. It wasn’t long before I was walking down to the independent video store and renting stuff like Dead Alive, Carrie, Rosemary’s Baby, Poltergeist, Susperia, Santa Sangre, Repusion, etc.. The Shining might be my favorite horror film, but I’m sure it’s because of how much I love Kubrick. The closest I got to being a typical little teen girl was participating in the minor obsession my friends and I had with Scream when we were in middle school, but it is a fun movies, and I think it was mitigated by having been far more in love with Werner Herzog’s Nosferatu The Vampyre.
Anyhoo, yeah, Tarot was a mediocre disappointment that I had to watch in two chunks and I was multitasking through most of it. Seems like a good opportunity was wasted by a lack of talent and/or skill. It was a collection of tropes thrown together to make a predictable story, which is only sometimes a formula for success when it’s done in an effort to be campy, like in the case of Killer Klowns From Outer Space. I will say they got most of the stuff about tarot cards right, with a handful of exceptions. Otherwise, it’s just completely dull and (hopefully) forgettable.
Sorry, Chris. This is best of the worst for me. Better than Night Swim, Imaginary, Blood and Honey 2. Also MILES better than Bye-Bye Man. I actually quite enjoyed most of the death scenes, they were more effective than most PG-13 deaths. The Tarot entities looked cool too. I’d give it 2 stars. It was ok
I hate modern horror when they're rated PG-13. If some of them were R-rated, the kills would've been more creative. Tarot wasted a good and interesting concept, but the monster design for the Fool, the Magician, the Priestess, the Hanged Man, and others were cool imo, but we have a cast of stupid teenagers who took the "Let's split up, gang!" cliché halfway through. This fucking movie kept shoveling out the most egregious horror clichés of all time; whether it be jumpscares or dick moves that would most likely lead to the characters' deaths. They stick out like a sore thumb, and my god wasn't the talent of Ned wasted! Tarot has to be the worst horror movie of 2024 so far, and earned it. Winnie-the-Pooh Blood and Honey took the crown of 'worst horror' in 2023, because it somehow exists and encouraged this trend of children's icons getting turned into movie monsters/slasher villains(isn't new, but certain cartoon mascots that enter the public domain and the internet virality surrounding them becoming out of character and murderous is now common unfortunately), even getting a slew of Razzies this year. And I agree with Cody here; Tarot is Ouija 2.0, and is *nearly identical* to the film released a decade prior. They're both board game material, infamous for their ties to the occult. And the reason I've explained here makes sense in context, because it felt like Screen Gems is repeating the same mistake like other major studios in the 2010s with the generic jumpscare-fest plaguing horror. Devil's Due(which I call Rosemary's Baby: Found-Footage Edition), 13-13-13, and The Chernobyl Files were lost in the aether due to them being outright forgettable, and The Nun duology was at least remembered fondly since it was a part of the Conjuring franchise, had a great gothic atmosphere, and the first installment's advertisement motto: 'The Darkest Chapter in the Conjuring Universe' became an overnight meme(aside from the infamous trailer tricking viewers into turning up the volume, gaining the attention of the K-Fee Zombie's actor Brad Johnson, admitting in an interview that he threw his popcorn in fear after witnessing it at a theater). But at least Screen Gems made good or decent horror like the Underworld and Resident Evil(Paul W.S. Anderson) films? Hope y'all agree with me here.

I don't understand how they continue to make horrible horror films when you have so many examples throughout the year on how to make a decent horror film. In no other genre is there this much GARBAGE! And would they stop with the PG-13 horror films! No Horror film should be any less than R-Rated.

Didn't expect much from this movie, pretty much everything i thought it would be. Nothing worth remembering, characters were bland, stupid and naive. I think what i was hoping for the most after the opening scene is that they would all die much quicker than they did. On a positive note it did help me fall asleep😅😅
Pg-13 horror movies can work when done right... problem is 95 percent of the time, they do NOT do it right.. Horror movies need to be rated R. It doesn't have to be a super hard R. Doesn't have to be torture porn or body horror, but history, statistics, and public opinion are all proof that we pretty much need horror movies need to be R rated 9.5 out of 10 times. That is just my opinion

I loved the idea of this movie. Im not a horoscope kind of person, but I've always liked the symbolism and artistry of the cards. I also loved the monsters, and the actors were pretty good. With that being said, this may be the worst written movie ive seen in a while. Every two minutes i was pulled out of the story. For instance the first kill. How the fuck is that deemed an accident. Under what circumstance does someone fall off a ladder then have the ladder be smashed against there body ten fucking times. Seriously! One of the girls is listening to a video of the reading."your instinct will be to run away. You need to avoid it."
Five seconds later. She dies running away. Also the annoying comedic reliefs death was never in question once he seperated from the group, because we already knew he was going to "come through for his freinds" eventually. Even though logically since he already believed in the readings he shouldnt have left especially to barricade himself in his room when that was against the forshadowing in the reading. Mind you he was scarded that he was in the confined space of the car like two minutes earlier. The old lady, fuck me the old lady pissed me off. Shes spent damn near all her life searching for the cards so she can destroy them and when people come to her with the exact location she goes "you guys should go and destroy them". Excuse me, you dedicated your whole life to this, and then when it's handed to you on a silver plater, you go "nope not my problem until the plot needs me later" dont worry she shows up to be even more useless. Not to mention how they found her and not just her adress which was online for some reason but whatever its 2024. I mean when the final girl rips the laptop out of comedic reliefs hands like she has a grand idea, then types "horoscope deaths", into google. Someone give this girl a cookie shes a genius. Because shes a genius and lucky enough to be blessed by the search engine gods, the second result was the one person on the planet who had every bit of information they needed. Speaking of google i didnt like it as it was happening but the more i thought about it the scene where the indian girl is googling how to destroy the cards in retrospect is hilarious because i can actually imagine some cluless teenagers doing the same. Rspect where its earned i guess. Im not going to lie i was going to give two examples, and be done but every one I thought of led into another one. I can literally go on and on. Aweful writing. Despite that and maybe because my predisposition to love poorly written garbage, I didn't think it was half bad but i guess i love yelling at my tv more than others. As I mentioned, the monsters and visuals were pretty well done, and I didn't have any real problem with the acting, although the male lead just seemed to be there the whole time, not really adding much to the story. That's not the actors' fault entirely but a lack of screen presence cant be entirely the writers fault. Im curious to see how much of this film was left in the editing room because, at times, it felt like there were more than just plot holes or maybe thats just how big they were. Lol. The highlight of the movie is the final kill. It's a great performance, I dare say magical.

My review
Background - A group of young adults find a deck of tarot cards in the attic on a holiday. When a member of the group uses the card to predict their future they find that the predictions of their chilling fate are actually true.
Likes - None. This movie had an idea. I mean all slashers need an origin and this had an origin. But beyond the origin there is nothing in the movie. And when I say nothing I sadly mean it.
Dislikes - Plenty. This movie is loosely plotted right from the beginning. In any slasher one of the more important things is the rules of the game. I have said it before. Who is the killer and who is next ? This movie has no rules. The screenplay somehow has to link the entire plot to the tarot card and the readings made in the beginning. That is just the point of the movie. There is no logic, no tone and not even any suspense or scare in this movie. And the acting is very ordinary. I mean there isn't scope for much of acting but the actors leave no impression. The screentime is entirely dominated by the group of young actors but they really leave no impression. There is brief period when a senior actor is introduced and that is the only period when the movie feels like movie. But the rest of the movie is just illogical, and boring. That is the sum of the movie.
Final Thoughts - Tarot had an origin which could have led to interesting even if a familiar slasher movie. But this movie seems to have placed all on its bets on the origin. Neither is the idea properly developed, nor is it tied into the plot. As a result the movie has a very sketchy plot with a really poor screenplay. It seems as if makers really had no idea how to turn the main idea into full length screenplay or they were too confident of the concept. And there is nothing else to support the screenplay. The characters are not likeable. Nor are there any great kills or even a plot twist to surprise the audience. I mean barring the the tarot reading sequence at the beginning and the brief period where a senior actor is introduced this movie is literally over an hour plus 10 minutes of boredom.
I give this a 3/10.

I saw this on my first date with my new love interest and she liked the movie I certainly wasnt going to tear it apart in front of her lol so I gave it a 1 star on Letterboxd instead lol cheers for making it blatantly obvious why this sucked so much, still Night Swim was much worse for me personally, that was my main fuck this movie experience so far this year but i downright refuse to sit through Madame Web lol
I watch two movies every Friday so I go abt 150 times a year to watch movies it seems lol and this by far is one of the worst of the year I believe it’s better than night swim and imagery but other than that it’s a terrible movie glad to get the stinkers out of the way before maxxxine and the other great movies to hopefully come. Had to go watch Abigail in dbox which are like the roller coaster seats after this shitty ass movie made the whole trip worth it jus for Abigail didn’t even mind paying out the ass for a dbox seat after watching Abigail 4 times alr lol😂 . This movie was pure horse shit. Don’t waste your time like I did. That’s an hour and a half I will never get back.

I was supposed to see this but it overlapped with another film so i watched Alien then saw some of this and was laughing for about ten minutes in the middle and then it just died. Boring as fuck.
