    A subtle detail that many may have missed in this scene is Quinn looking uneasy after Daria provided her explanation behind the word "edgy." Like she understood what Daria's point was and started wondering if her efforts at being popular were being exploited by others for monetary gain.

    • @JimFarm

      As became apparent over the course of the series, Quinn was almost as intelligent as her sister. She differed from Daria because early on she had made a decision to hide her intellect for the sake of popularity.. So I think Quinn understood Daria's point and was silently yelling "Ouch!'

    People with Asperger's generally don't understand sarcasm or pick up on social cues. Daria's language pretty much exclusively consisted of sarcasm and she never had a problem understanding people socially. She was just too smart for the people around her and used sarcasm and indifference to convey her annoyance.

    • @metaphoricdirigible1499
      @metaphoricdirigible1499 7 лет назад +4

      True, but it isn't universal. I'm autistic and was understanding and using sarcasm before my peers. By third grade, I was so relentlessly cynical and sarcastic I had to tone it down before everything I said became sarcastic. I got it down to a reasonable level by seventh grade.

    So, like, some people say Daria was edgy because it had a cynical edge and was aimed at cynical teens?
    I don't get this word.
    How do you even distinguish "fake edge" against "real edge"?
    I'm going mad.

    • @Ab3ndcgi
      @Ab3ndcgi 6 лет назад +21

      PolarPhantom yeah, it was aimed at cynical teens, and it aired on the most edgy tv station of all time. I think the zoom in acts a clue by wich creators are telling us this stament is also meant as self critique ( they wouldnt need to emphasize a snappy comeback so much) Original or alternative trends, styles art etc become edgy after intermediates try to cash into these niches, depriving them of substance and identity so they may reach a larger consumer base, so i' d say edgy is fake by definition.

    • @danielhuelsman76
      @danielhuelsman76 5 лет назад +23

      Based on Daria's definition, the fake edge is marketable, real edge is a bane to salesmen.
      For example
      Fake: Che Guevara T-shirt.
      Real: The actual Che Guevara.

    • @JT5555
      @JT5555 5 лет назад +15

      It's Not Aimed At "Cynical Teens".It's Aimed At People That Are Too Smart For Beavis And Butthead. It's A Show About Being Intelligent,Not About Being Cynical (Daria,Herself Just Happens To Be Both).

    • @nathanseper8738
      @nathanseper8738 5 лет назад +17

      "Real edge" is a direct affront to the status quo. "Fake edge" is being subversive, but in a shallow self-serving way. "Real edge" was the civil rights movement, because people challenged a corrupt and tyrannical system. "Fake edge" would be rappers who rail against authority while taking corporate sponsorships.

    • @abelmoreno4836
      @abelmoreno4836 3 года назад +7

      There is no real or fake edge, only good and bad edge. Good edge is Rebelling against that which is morally wrong, but seen as correct. When you do the right thing even though you are told not to, and don’t care about what others think.
      Bad edge is anime teen angst. In other words: Doing things only to be seen as “cool”.

    Now I have just realized why when ever I watched MTV as a teenager. I got depressed unlike the rest off them... I was smart enough to be aware off what It use to be. And while looking at all the gangsters rapping pop punk wannabes skateboarding I could see MTV committed cultural suicide getting rid off black sabbath (and any good music) along with bevis and butthead and Daira... They said MTV was corrupting youth back then. Now the youth off the day will not only be corrupted but dumb too.

    "Val" is based on Jane Pratt, founder/editor of teengirl mag "Sassy" and later the self-titled "Jane" (for the 18-34 set). Jane was 24 when she founded "Sassy" and had a good run doing interviews and talk shows for Fox, Lifetime, WH-1 and Extra.
    Last year she founded xojane.com.
    I always thought Daria was a mite unfair to "Val". Val was so lovably pathetic.
