There are quite a lot of extremely popular modern day performers, and I am fortunate enough to have never once even heard any music from them. It’s actually something that I pride myself on. This person is one of those performers. I don’t like the sounds of modern popular music. As far as her behavior goes, I am getting the feeling that, because of the rewarding poor behavior trend that’s been sweeping the country over the past 8 years that there are huge amounts of people who feel entitled to behave in any manner that strikes their fancy. This trend is going to produce generations of people who are happily destroying societal norms. There are no consequences to any bad behavior, and it’s going to ruin the enjoyment of life for the rest of us. We are definitely on a decline as far as a society is concerned and it cannot possibly go any other direction without some major changes.

That's an insightful observation. I hadn't thought about how limited the job opportunities are for overweight dancers.
I'm not diagnosing Lizzo as adopting this perspective, only speculating that someone like her may come to feel like the dancers "owe" her an extensive debt of gratitude for being employed at all. Also this could foster a dynamic where the employer knows her employees don't really have other readily available job options, so she can treat those employees unfairly or inappropriately without any real threat of them resigning. Or complaining and risking losing their job.

She most likely had at least some proficiency with other instruments besides just the flute, and she certainly could read music and play by sight-reading. Otherwise she wouldn't have ever been accepted in any music performance program at any university in this country.

As a large woman myself who is athletically gifted, I have some doubts about Lizzo fat Shaming. While my thoughts are speculative here is where I sit.
It seemed from the court documents and the interviews Ari's performance was "allegedly" becoming problematic. As a big woman myself with strong athletic talents, I know all to well what a rapid 10lbs+ weight gain can do to one's ability...even more so for a person who still remains within a healthy BMI. We can get more sluggish, are more injury prone, movements may become more restrictive, etc. I can imagine that poor performance coupled with rapid weight gain could have been a concern for Lizzo and management, not because they want to fat shame, but because that dancer medically becomes a greater risk and liability. Ari, herself also stated in an interview that at the SXSW show when she revealed her medical conditions which included an ED, she said Lizzo and management was like "oooooh". That response doesn't seem like someone wanted to fat shame, that response sounds like someone who understood with more clarity what was happening. She also stated she wasn't even sure if Lizzo had received her medical and psychological assessment information from the dance competition show. So, it doesn't sound like fat Shaming, but I also could be wrong.
I do want to add that I understand what it's like to be a big woman who is self conscious about my body...it seemed like perhaps Ari was projecting her own insecurities and her anxiety and depression may have exacerbated her sense of feeling ostracized regarding her weight. Once again I could be wrong and do not claim I'm 100% right about this, but just I could see this being a legit scenario.
Now, those sexual harassment claims, are appalling...and while alleged the ladies seemed more confident and sure of themselves when talking about those issues. I'm inclined to believe Ari rightfully felt sexually harassed. Her boundaries weren't respected and not only that, intimate details about her virginity were shared and publically discussed without her conset, which doesnt seem ok.

I know someone who used to dance and perform professionally and criticism for weight gain while in a show or on tour is just part of the industry. The performers are all supposed to maintain their body weight and shape so that the costumes fit and so that they have the stamina and flexibility for the routines they perform. Even if a person is already technically overweight when they are hired, they are putting a lot more stress than is ideal on their joints, and adding to that may mean they were not performing as well as when hired. The company hiring them is within their rights to expect a standard to be maintained. This has been twisted to sound like it's about body positivity hypocrisy - but it could well just be about fitness to perform their job.

Great Videos Dr. Grande, I am a professional guitarist songwriter and independent contractor.
I find these videos very relaxing and entertaining. But they are also educational and can actually help us become better people by teaching about human behavior and relationships.
Please cover these topics for future "today's question" videos:
Patrice Cullers (BLM founder) and the scandal with her 4 mansions.
The controversy with Jason Aldean and the song "try that in a small town"
    and
    Reverend Jesse Lee Peterson.
    Thanks again Dr. Grande.
