Maya I can't thank you enough, my uncle gave his whole life to this Manatees. He worked at this association and studied them in Manaus his whole life and gave so much for these animals. This whole series is incredible, as a Brazilian thank you for shining a light on the Amazon and showing how incredibly important it is for the whole world to be able to function!
Yea, as Solar pointed out, I was about to say that they have to legitimately be fierce given they cohabitate with the likes of jaguars and multiple species of caiman! Which I figure at some point in history, the multiple piranha species also must've played a part in natural selection, leading to only the biggest otters surviving. _(some species get to be multiple pounds in size, not like the tiny pet store ones we see)_ Our NA counterparts would no doubt become fish food in those waters lol
At "Givskud Zoo" in Denmark, I used to work and their conservation program of giant river otters is very cool. Some of the otters from that zoo are being set out in Brazil actually. But they are fucking scary! Like, all of the people at the zoo agree they'd rather be in a cage with a rhino than with a gang of those otters. They destroy anything and everything
i'm losing my mind at how cool this is omg. what an awesome and hugely important job they do! i knew manatees were important to conserve but didn't know the specifics of Why, so i'm really glad to have learned that today! thank you Maya for the vlog!! :)
Maya is for sure one of my favorite creators rn, just yesterday I watched a live stream of her playing basketball and now I’m watching a video on manatee conservation
Manatees are majestic creatures and seeing tons of them in Florida was a fantastic sight. It’s vital we protect them and spread awareness about them so that they are safe from other people who have desire to hunt!!!
hey maya, brazilian biology student here!! im so glad that u were able to go there and share with your public more about brazilian species and projects who are often forgotten by our own people. their job protecting and helping these animals are so amazing and yours too for sharing this with many more people
Maya’s work has had such a huge impact on my own relationship with conservation and giving back. 30+ year old paramedic who’d never been “into” animals/wildlife/nature but now it’s become a big passion of mine, and even lead to me becoming a volunteer with several of my local animal shelters. Not trying to pay myself on the back, just illustrating how big of an impact the work Maya does can have on people. P.S. Shoutout to her whole team, especially the editor who through in the fallout institute reference. But really, y’all are all doing great work.
the fact that there's only FOUR species of manatees in the entire world is crazy to me, though there also aren't many species of elephants either. I guess they're just at the top of their evolutionary game
we used to have at least one other, the stellars sea cow. then humans figured out they were slow and not afraid of humans, and had a lot of meat because they were 3x the size of manatees today 🥺 they went out the same way as the dodo bird...
she said there would be like 4/5 videos, this was in brazil yest but its mainly about the manatees so people would probably hate on her if she put brazil vlog in every title for like 6 vlogs in a row @@Alex83418
I love that everyone at the facility seemed so welcoming to have you there, everyone's smiling and happy. Seems like a super cool experience and super cool to watch
The ant in the start of the video is a Saúva or leaf-cutter ant. They are very common in most of Brazil. You often see perfect little trails in the ground of fields or forests made by them. They are farmers, using the vegetation that they gather to feed the fungus in their colonies, which is their actual food. Also, the winged male is called Tanajura and it's butt is a delicacy, often cooked with rice or farofa, a coarse flour made from cassava
It’s funny that Maya mentions being sacred of the giant river otters. In the Amazon survivorman episode, one of the waorani guides told Les to stay away from the giant river otters, citing that other than a jaguar they may be the most dangerous thing you run into
Well, the natives call the giant otters "river jaguar", so yeah, they are indeed dangerous. Just to put things into perspective of their game, they usually feed on anacondas and caymans, which is fair to say not many other species are capable of doing.
VAMOS BRASIL 🇧🇷❤️ love the video so much we all appreciate the lengths you and your coworkers go through to make us aware of the animals we have to cherish :)
I am simply just very happy for Maya. You can tell she has found contentment and meaning in her life. That's all you can ask for + big cute manatees :)))
Brazil: nuts! Also, I loved the explanation of why the manatee is important to the Rio Negro system: It's basically a much more chill elephant of the river :D
One time years and years ago I saw a Giant River Otter on one of those "my pet can do tricks!" shows. They had to remove all dogs from the area while the otter was out because, uh, he was... let's say he was a threat.
One time me and my family were doing a shallow diving thing around the delta where the amazon river meets the sea and a pair of manatees just rocked up to us. We were scared at first, but it turns out they're just chill as fuck and just swam with us for like half an hour. It specially liked the children and would even carry them around and stuff. Dope animal, 10/10
For years, I’ve always wanted to see a manatee in person, it’s been on my bucket list. And I finally got the chance to see a bunch in a National Park in Florida in January. I never knew the Amazon had its own species of manatee.
ahh the hexagonal tilings, the trees, the colors, the vibes, everything, reminds me so much of brasil. I hope you enjoyed your time there to the fullest
There is a news story from the 70's where a kid fell in an Ariranha(giant river otter) enclosure and a man was mauled to death while saving the kid. So yeah they're scary.
This is so incredible Maya! So happy you got to go on this trip and thank you so much for sharing it with us and teaching us about these beautiful creatures! Even your little bug friends at the beginning 😊
Those manatees are very pretty, I like their darker colors. The otters are definitely creatures I wouldn't want to encounter without a barrier between us
I've only encountered their cousins the Dugongs of the Philippines, but man those Amazonian Manatees are also gorgeous!! I'm gonna love all these Brazil Vlogs for sure!❤

You would not bottle feed a manta ray, because it is not a mammal. Only mammals breastfeed. Whales, dolphins, otters etc all breastfeed, because they're mammals. Yes that is correct, whales and dolphins do breastfeed. Fish do not breastfeed, marine mammals do. Polar bears and otters are also marine animals. Polar bears and otters are the only two marine mammals that are usually born on land, but spend most of their time in water. Yes a polar bear is a marine mammal, not a land mammal. Polar bears are not like other bears. Other bears are land mammals and eat very little meat, polar bears are marine mammals and eat only meat. You did read that correctly, bears besides polar bears eat very little meat. Bears eat around 5% meat, and 95% fruit and insects. They eat so little meat that they just barely meet the requirements to be classified as omnivores. Bears mostly eat fruit and plants, and they only eat meat to fatten up for hibernation. The average bear eats like 30 thousand berries per day, and will only eat meat during a small period of the year.
Manatees are awesome. And, so are otters. Funny that as you were talking about how big and scary they are at the start, I was thinking how they could almost be compared to big cats, and then you said something about a video of those otters scaring and chasing away jaguars. Makes sense. Those things are huge, and thick, and JACKED. I wouldn't want to come across one in the wild, either. And, I think otters are some of the cutest animals in the world.
