Dec. 13, 2019 | Bob Boilen -- The Comet is Coming is a force of nature. The British trio's approach to the Tiny Desk was ferocious. Shabaka Hutchings, aka King Shabaka, blew his sax hard while his effects pedal added reverb, expanding not only his sound but altering the office and making it a little eerier.
The set began with a deep drone from keyboardist Dan Leavers, aka Danalogue. It kicked into full gear when he leaped into the air and, on descent, drummer Max Hallett, aka Betamax, whacked the snare drum, setting off a transformative 19-minute concert.
The Comet is Coming is the kind of instrumental jazz trio that takes music lovers out of their comfort zone and into a musical realm they may never have explored. There's familiarity in these screechy sax/synth/drum dialogues, with the same kind of fuel that fires up Led Zeppelin or Fugazi, for example. Only here, what The Comet is Coming lacks in words, it makes up for in Shabaka's reedy lyricism, along with electronic textures from Dan Leavers.
These songs are from the band's second album, Trust in the Lifeforce of the Deep Mystery. This is music for adventure, a thrill-ride that may cleanse your musical palette and alter your taste.

@@DMVGREY That's kinda crazy but he's an awesome player with a sound that is truly his own.
@@DMVGREY And what do you think of Leo P from Too Manu Zooz ?

London jazz scene is scorching all the earth right now.Incredible.
Mate you're not wrong! It's on fire
Shabaka's other band Sons of Kemet, for sure.
Nubya Garcia, Joe Armon-Jones, Blue Lab Beats, Theon Cross, Moses Boyd's Exodus. In general look up Tomorrow's Warriors as a great place to start, as loads of the amazing UK jazz scene have come through there.

this is why music is the greatest democracy.... I came across this today for the 1st time and its mostly noise to me, but I appreciate its music to some people 😂
Really? Even the last song? I felt in heaven…
@@MissAwesome2 😄 it was so noisy to me. Too much going on. But enjoyyy
I cant agree more!
The forearm strength in that room could lift a mountain.
Or a really big comet
Can we take a minute to appreciate this man's LUNG CAPACITY THO?!?! The stamina....sheesh!
Si
The last time i saw these guys live, they did this for like 2 hours. Unbelievable. And Shabaka is a GIANT!
Check out Kokoroko, those women are just as hot, and make it seem effortless. And the tuba player from Sons of Kemet, Shabaka's other band.
Yea, he is straight up an elite athlete. Their live show blew my mind.

ever heard of the Rolling Stones?
The drummer looks like his arms are being controlled by someone else and he's just sitting there not knowing what to do
These guys worked harder in one set than I have my entirety of college...
Not something to brag about.
I totally believe you. Not much good coming out of Unies nowadays.
Only 3 musicians creating that massive wall of sound.... Big up to these guys.

As Sun Ra once put it: space is the place!
AH! I thought of Sun Ra too!
same!
I've seen the Comet is Coming live in late October in Hamburg/Germany. Before them played the Sun Ra Arkestra which was really, really good, too. So i guess they met before at least once.
Yessss... the Sun Ra vibes are very high. May Saturn keep them moving..
@@tobotron They definitely know each other. King Shabaka has played with Sun Ra Arkestra.
I was security for them and Sons of Kemet at festival back in March. Had no idea who they were, but the music was unforgettable
Big Ears?
love how one of them is dressed for summer in bahamas, one for gentle stroll in the park during spring, and one just came from skiing..
Fist idles, then Freddie gibbs, weyes blood and now the comet is coming. It seems like all of my favourite artists are appearing. There is no better feeling!

My social environment (friends parents etc) only listen to pop and rap. so I'm glad that somebody can point me to other different Music! And yeah, the fact that his fav artists are some of mine doesn't really bother me. Have a nice day though (and sry for the long text)
I'm happy for you.
Easily one of the best performances TDC has ever had on here.
Agreed. Mind blowing
Negative
Agreed! Snarky Puppy was pretty awesome as well
Absolutely yes!
Holy f#$k!
Can we stop to talk about how he's using his sax to do dance hall vocal melodies and how amazing that is.
no.
The three of them perform like three different people being possessed by musical spirits. Betamax looks terrified by the spirit’s power, Danalogue looks he’s embraced the spirit and let himself go, and Shabaka looks like he’s tamed the spirit and has complete control.
*King Shabaka
So I didn't even know their names and knew exactly who you were talking about by that description
well said
nice
Perfect description 10/10
When the comet does come, I want these guys to play us all out.
Just saw them at Meredith and it literally felt like I was connected to the stage by an umbilical cord of pure light and energy. So wild.
Same here man. We're now all siblings.
Amen. Blew my mind to pieces. 😍
I have genuinely watched this about 30 times. I use it to motivate me to do anything. I need to write an essay? Play this. I need to clean my room? Play this. I need to spend a bit of time imagining that a comet is coming and it's going to crash into the earth? I play this. I wish that everyone on the planet could watch this video, I think it's one of the greatest live performances ever recorded. But never before, out of all those 30 times, have I ever seen the lanyard fall off the shelf at 12:41. Powerful.
Listen to ezra collective - you can't steal my joy
Lol I just saw that then!! Haha
i might start doing that. i've just revisited after a long while so i could tweet it and was just transfixed throughout. it's such a journey through so many cultures and so many emotions and just time itself really. at the end i felt breathless but also at peace, the way they brought me down from that high and like i'm ok to leave now. i've had a complete life.
So with you on this. They were the last band I saw live before lockdown in 2019. I've listened to and shared this so many times since then.
@@markholter5687 Shabaka has some serious energy. I saw him with Sons of Kemet last week. he is an absolute beast (Theon Cross too)

The sound engineering is even better than normal! how is that even possible!

Shabaka Hutchings was my gateway to the UK Jazz scene. Practically, everything he touches turns to gold. Not to mention that the UK's jazz scene is on 🔥 lately. Long live Jazz!!

God how I wish I was in that office to experience that energy, this is one of the most intense performances I have ever seen on Tiny Desk.
If you have the opportunity, go and see them performing live. You'll thank me later!
My mate Betamax Killer sipping a cup of tea after all that drum fills is wild
4:55 - 7:10 This transition is my favorite part. It's extremely suspenseful and i love how daunting the saxophone sounds when it starts playing.
19:01 Even J.S. Bach approved this otherwordly sonic performance... The heir of Pharoah Sanders is among us! What an awe-inspiring trio... Such powerful music...
Saw them at both their LA shows and it was easily one of the best bands I have ever seen. Criminally underrated. Gotta pray that Shabaka picks the sax up again and brings the comet back around again, otherwise you’ll never get the chance to see it yourself. The kind of band that should headline festivals.
i'm such a bumbling fool for discovering them after they broke up. MY THIRST FOR THE COMET IS INSATIABLE!
that first song is like youre chasing space. and the stars are always in reach but never within your grasp. and youre crying cause you cant stop running. but... youre also having the most fun of your life.
I saw them at Glastonbury this year and they were one of the best sets of the weekend, really happy to see NPR supporting them and exposing them to new fans. Three hugely talented musicians, I’d urge anyone who enjoys this to see them live if they have an opportunity. It’s even better when the synth is so loud it makes your skull vibrate, I felt like the ground was going to open up.
Nice. A friend of mine did too, then we both saw them in Norwich. Phenominal - best gig this year by far! I'm glad others here are discovering and loving them so much.
Keyboardist wardrobe begins to make sense by min 6:20! Dig it!!!
Hats off to your sound engineer. I use “Summon the Fire” to demo audio systems. I’ve had a few speakers not make it to the end.

My new favorite band. I was in my used cd spot for the first time in almost a year and they were playing Birth of Creation and the bass clarinet took me back to Herbie Hancock Mwandishi w/ Bennie Maupin on the clarinet. Bought the cd and the rest is history. Forever in debt to the guys at Street Corner Music in Southfield, MI. True music connoisseurs.
Snarky Puppy and Comet is coming? My heart ain't that strong guys
Neither was mine ;)
Sometimes you get hit with a piece of artwork that is beyond, and this is a great example, thank you for the raza.
I'm listening to this AGAIN! For like the millionth time. It literally gets better every time I hear it. So incredibly good.
I died during the sax break down in the last song, but it's ok because King Shabaka brought me back to life shortly after
these amazing guys seem to me like those old classic musicians that lock in a studio with 6 watermelons, water and 26 tabs of acid
Now that was an incredible 20 minutes for my ears.
Super Zodiac is straight up one of my favorite tracks of 2019
this was so stressful and enchanting and hypnotic and beautiful and inspiring and funky af. this is how I imagine going crazy and enjoying the process would be like.
