HOLY SHIT! TIMELINE! You started with TIMELINE! Oh my God, I was trying to remember the name of that one mod for YEARS! I KNEW it was actually a thing that existed! THANK YOU! Oh, God, dude...I... I had almost just about convinced myself that it was a hallucination or a dream or some shit, it was so long ago.
I have such weird nostalgia for early GoldSrc aesthetic. Even before our dial up was good enough to handle multiplayer matches in early CS builds I used to just walk around the empty maps. There was an eerie, cavernous beauty to them.
As someone who was too young to experience Half-Life in it's prime, the key thing that I'd miss out on are the joy of experiencing these mods. It's not just because some of them don't play nicely with modern hardward, but because mods tend to fall between the gaps of gaming history unless it serves as a precursor to a product sold in the general market (Team Fortress 2, Dota 2 and the like). So I really appreciate this retrospective insight into these mods as a means to connect with how special Half-Life was at the time of release.
I worked as a reviewer for mods during the golden age of mods on moddb and half-life 1. Played over 120 mods. Really glad you did this video because there's so many insanely amazing pieces that hardly anyone knows about. EDIT: Also "Wanted" was godamn amazing at the time, it was released before a lot of other mods and hardly any custom-asset mods.
Thanks for the stroll down memory lane. These mods made up so much of my early days of computer gaming. I've replayed They hunger, Someplace Else, Poke646, POV more times than I can count. I agree with you about Dav's level design, but Azure Sheep holds a dear place in my heart!
Oh man, the modding scene for Half-Life was insane. It wasn't the first game to be modded, but I'd argue that it shaped the modding culture more than any other game out there.
I think this is my favorite video that you've made, with only one problem. The Afraid of Monsters segment I wish was longer, especially since rumpel (the mod's dev) released a better (and more famous) version 2 years later with Afraid of Monsters: Directors Cut. I would have liked to see a comparison of sorts between the two versions. Still however it was really cool to see all these mods being dug back up and reviewed.
Fucking hell Noah! You've got to sit us down sometime and explain how the fuck you're able to script these long, varied videos. Now all i want to do today is play the mods. Ya making me green with respectful envy!
I hate to do it, but as a Londoner I have to point out that it's Tower Bridge in the London section of Timelines 2 - the lifting bridge with the four towers that everyone is familiar with. London Bridge is the next bridge West along the river, linking the area of the same name on the South, and Bank in the North. It's a relatively plain fixed bridge that most people probably wouldn't be able to pick out of a lineup.
I literally laughed out loud when I saw the footage of you trying and failing to put down the zombie with a shotgun in Heart of Evil. The thing was so absurdly, unnecessarily durable.
Half-Life's dated blocky graphics meant we needed our imagination to fill in a lot of gaps in the original game let alone the fan mods. But it meant we were more open to using our imaginations to flesh out the universe that really benefits these classic addons.
I don't really have anything to add to this, since I haven't played any of these mods (or Half Life 1 even), but I found the video very enjoyable. Thank you!
They Hunger honestly nails the zombies; sure, their lines can be goofy but when they moan "why do we hunger?" it feels so genuinely creepy. There's something so unsettling about how they seem to still be somewhat conscious, and even they don't know why they suffer such an intense craving for flesh.
Really happy to see someone remember They Hunger! Finding out there was a part three was really exciting for me teen me, even if it took me ages to get a working copy of it. Shame nothing came of the sequel-sequel.
It's rare to find a channel dedicated to such long, thorough analysis - especially ones narrated so professionally. Keep up the good work! I can't wait to much this one!
The outdoorridors are an aesthetic that feels super underutilized, which blows ass because they look amazing. For some reason they give me the same whimsical vibe I get from the lush environments of Oblivion.
Hey Noah, super impressed with the audio quality man. literally the only quality that your videos have suffered from in the past has been remedied! No one can stop you now!
Great video! Really comprehensive! The fact that Cry of Fear, the in my opinion most impressive Half Life 1 mod, both when it comes to graphics and storytelling, surprised me. But this is your list, not mine.
This is a very, very niche video. As in, very few people who are interested in games will be interested in a video like this. That's unfortunate though because I'm one of those people. I love fan-made content and I love Half-life and the goldsrc engine. Personally, I think it'd be interesting to see your take on the remains of TFC fan-made content. TFC had the "escape maps" like Jurassic Park and K_thegame, conc maps (an art form unto itself in gaming that's now dead), and so on. I could point you in the direction of some classic maps and how to get a hold of them (through installing TFC and playing it on steam and just finding servers with those maps) if you wanted. To be honest the Timeline games seem really incredible to me and I've always been interested in the idea of a distant future, so distant that nothing looks familiar at all. Sadly the only mod I've played on this whole list is the first They Hunger. I'm definitely gonna check out some of them when I get the chance though. Also, for the record, are you saying "Outdoor-doors" or "Outdorridors"? Because the second one makes a lot more sense and aptly describes pretty much all goldsrc "outdoor" segments.
+Malmrose Projects It's the second one, outdooridors! I was trying to explain the GoldSrc look to my girlfriend and the word popped out-- I liked it enough to try and pass it off in the script. You should reaaaaalllllyyyy play Timeline, you can even start with #3 without it feeling like you've missed a bunch. Each mod is relatively discrete.
this guy.. THIS GUY! is the embodiment of everything i love about a youtuber. thoughtful analysis (insight comparable to an essay that'd definitely get an A+) very VERY beefy videos filled with content (and i thought spoony's videos were long) tackles videogames (id love to see him tackle film too) eloquence (id marry this guy's voice if it were a person) and most of all HUMILITY (everything about this guy just screams of it) I could work for hours just playing his videos on the other monitor
Nice review, I'm glad theres still people spending time on these classic mod. Should've done Peaces like us and Edge of Darkness too. Fun fact: I heard the moddb pages for the Timeline mods were inaccessible from germany due to bans on the Swastika..... shame.
I've just found your channel few hours ago and I'm really impressed. In a sea of shitty gaming channels filled with random "hilarious" videos with forced laughter, your channel is a shining beacon of hope. You have a real passion and I hope more and more people will watch your stuff - you deserve it.
I love all the content you produce, but being a GoldSource/Source modding enthusiast for years now since the days of the original Half-Life + listening to your videos while mapping regularly, this video is a special kind of gem for me. Having played most of the brought up mods, it's great to listen to your take on them in-depth! If you haven't already, I'd recommend playing through the Hazardous Course series purely for it's level design and attention to detail, even if gameplay might prove challenging/frustrating in some areas. Oh and I think we've might've been witnesses to the coining of the greatest GoldSource related term yet- "Outdooridoors" Even though this video it might be a niche theme, it brings all the more enjoyment to the modding community. Thank you for the quality content you delivered so far. This channel holds amazing promise.
And my humble thanks for taking the time to create this video. These things, they are still relevant. And I like what you said, about them being likened to a 1950s black and white flick- I feel the same way.
I first played Half-Life in 2015. I can't understand for the life of me why people are bothered by "crouch-jumping". I mean, haven't you guys ever jumped and tucked your knees in before? In games, when I crouch-jump over an obstacle, I just assume my character is going past it like a track star past a hurdle.
Plus it was in source games all the time. Bot official ones but so many custom CS source maps that were based around it. Just like surfing and plenty of other things
Mirror's Edge just explicitly labels it as 'press crouch to pull in your knees to clear obstacles.' I do appreciate how (iirc) Half-Life 2 just automates crouch-jumping.
This video is simply amazing. I didnt grow up with a pc. I was a ps1/ps2 child myself. Its really cool to see the amount of mods made for half life and to see that new life was and still is being breathed into the game each day. This video is a great watch. Thanks for the video :).
With Afraid of Monsters, I suspect the flashlight thing is intentional. The small cone flashlight gives you awful tunnel vision which sets up a lot of jump scares.
iv'e watched this a few times now, and i just have to say thank you. As big as the Half-Life modding community is, its great to see someone go in depth with a good handful of mods that really deserve more awareness, even if they are well-known
Hello Mr. Gervais, I just want to thank you for referencing the novel "Tomorrow and Tomorrow." I was curious when you mentioned it so I tracked it down, and I am really enjoying it. So thanks for that.
Excellent video Noah! I've been hankering for some more old-school Half-Life lately and these definitely look like they'll hit the spot. I'd love to see you do a video like this for mods for other games.
1:14:51 You're welcome Noah, just keep the videos going. Now if you'll excuse me I'll go download the Timeline trilogy of mods because they look awesome. - Martin "The Jovian" Markov
Man thanks for these. I've almost finished the timeline series and still got so much more as well to play with. The only one i had previously played is they hunger and afraid of monsters.

You can come up with a very effective reason why the player needs to go from the mansion level to the park level, a sewer. You can give a very effective break from more urban or open environments to a more enclosed environment. That sort of thing. There's a reason it hasn't gone away and probably won't. And almost every level designer has been tempted to include a sewer level somewhere in their game.

Cube was a pretty cool movie. That mod really looked like fun to me, and I liked the esc key comment/tip at the end. This was a great collection and overview of these mods. I actually have played a couple of them on the Dreamcast, specifically They Hunger.
When I first seen this channel, I thought the long-form analysis was intelligent but looked unbearably long. Currently being a few videos into your channel listening to an hour long discussion is as far from boring as possible. Your work is truly incredible
Azure Sheep had a corny sense of humor at times, but it was AMAZING, thorough, lengthy, and very well-paced packed with tons of nods to the first Half-Life. It could easily be canon without ruining the timeline and story.
Whoa. Lots of incredible gems I personally missed back in the day. Furthermore, this video is game archeaology, and I'll be glad to see more of it. Better than Ross' Game Dungeon.
Amazing work as always, dude. But two things: 1: No U.S.S Darkstar?! Duuuuuude. 2: Will there be one of these that goes over HL2's Mods? Mistake of Pythagoras, Research and Development, Rock24, and of course, Metastasis..
BTW, r/games reaction has been pretty much 'why not this mod? why not that? etc. etc. etc.' If this topic proves popular enough, you should definitely make a follow-up that deals with other HL mods.
"Outdoorridors" is my new favorite game design term.
69 Likes. I dont have the maliciousness to ruin that.
Thank you for mentioning my mods!
+muddasheep Absolutely! Thanks for.making them, they're incredibly distinctive and unusual.
I am a dragon
Thank you so much for making my favourite Half-Life mods!
Thank you for playing them!
@@broadcaststsatic And now the trilogy is on Steam and even has achievements!
Your videos are incredibly comfy.
I get the same god damn feel.
agreed
I put these on when I’m trying to fall asleep.
When people talk about what they want from videogame journalism, your videos are it. Informative and personal.

This felt nostalgic even though I never played any of these
Crouch jumping is so ingrained in my muscle memory that I attempt to do it in literally any FPS I play.

crouch jumping makes a lot of sense, it's lifting your knees up while in the air. it's a mechanic that adds more depth to the movement, I like it
Dude, I can tell this is one of your most passionate projects because this is an excellent video.
Imagine how fucking honoured the modders must feel to have someone as excellent at his job as Noah review their mod

Loved these mods back in the day.
Also Redemption and USS Darkstar.
I keep coming back to this video, over half a decade later. There's something that I find deeply compelling about Goldsource mods.
This video is considerably better than some of your previous ones. Great job.
The author of Afraid of Monsters has done the mod when he was like 12

+EJSjjh Thank you!
Great idea for a video, mods for older games don't get any attention when it comes to retrospectives unless they managed to kickstart a franchise, so this was quite enlightening.

outdoor-ridors, lol. LOVED Afraid of Monsters though.
Great work as always. Out of all these mods I've only tried Afraid of Monsters.
This is one of your best videos from an already excellent selection
I was expecting an out of nowhere twist that Timelines was made by the person who'd go on to make Timesplitters, because it feels just like that game series.
FANTASTIC video! Really makes you nostalgic for the old days ;_; Thank you, man.
Another reason the Sewer maze exists in games and continues to exist long after maze-like level design is it serves as a very effective pacing break and is a very convenient way to bridge two levels together.
I always look forward to your new videos.

Great work. Would love to see more of these in the future, fits your style very well.
And I'm sure you've heard it before but you sound a bit like Morgan Freeman, all the more apparent whenever you say "Freeman"!
This brings back memories! Such a good video, thanks for making this!
I had no idea any of this existed. Fascisnating stuff, especially Timeline! I'd love to see more episodes devoted to mods, maybe Doom-engine or Build engine ones? The homemade quality, with the creative reappropriation of textures and assets to create new environments, is endlessly interesting.
I'm surprised someone else even heard of Half-Quake Amen/Sunrise much less completed it
Very grateful for your videos, Noah! Thanks for the hours of entertainment!
thanks for introducing me to cool mods i missed back in the day

It could, but parts of it and point of view kind of contradict the canon of the HL1 games. Other than that they're fun.
Your videos feel so charmingly low-budget and old school. Been just listening to the voices for about an hour.
I think this is actualy a meta review of The Begginers Guide.
woo hoo new video! love your stuff Noah keep it up.
the Wanted mod for multiplayer was pretty fun.

just want to dust off my ancient copy of half-life now, will be exploring these mods this week i think. Fascinating as ever, thanks noah!
BTW, r/games reaction has been pretty much 'why not this mod? why not that? etc. etc. etc.' If this topic proves popular enough, you should definitely make a follow-up that deals with other HL mods.
i would like more videos on game mods, good video good video.
