Hounds are hands down the greatest dogs. Incredible hunters, better friends, forever respectful to all humans and other animals both big or small. I've raised 5 different ones and had spectacular experiences. Most of the people I've met that say otherwise, either wanted them to be apartment dogs or lapdogs. If you can't / don't / won't diligently train a hound on basics starting at about 10 weeks of age nonstop for 3 to 4 weeks minimum under close repeatful eye, they will act out and develop stubborn and resentful habits. Same is true if not willing to exercise them correctly or give them a nonalpha role in your family. Great video and dog!
Thank you! Having had only one hound dog, I don't have as much experience as you for sure. Would love to have a beagle / basset hound some day to see what another hound would be like. I have had some experience with Labrador Retrievers (had one) and German Shepherds (grew up with this breed because my Dad had them) and the dog breeds can be so different. I am really enjoying Max, the Coon Hound -- this breed is very suited to me.
Your description is accurate. I have a 2 year old female, and her now 9 month old male pup (who is now bigger than his mama, he's built like a truck). They hate gunshots, fireworks, and our Shop Vac. And Mama will occasionally tree a squirrel, and she'll stay under that tree until he runs away. These dogs are awesome. But yes, they need room to run and play, and LOTS of attention. They get easily bored.
I had a walker hound who got loose for 5 minutes and got a deep laceration on his paw as well. Cost $1000 all told and several weeks with a "cone of shame" for him to heal up. of course he appreciates that I took care of him so he's more affectionate now than before by a good bit! 🤣🤣
I got two. Definitely awesome pups. They keep critters away that’s for sure. They like to lazy also. Great at telling the world if their is a visit from the mailman 😂
Don't retrieve? I had a pure bred Bluetick when I was a kid back in the 60's/70's and he was a frisbee and tennis ball retrieving machine and I even got him to be a pretty fair quail dog. We lived right down the road from the beach and he also loved to swim in the ocean.
My bluetick has been BY FAR the best quail dog of 5 different hound types I've raised and he was really easy to cable train. He does require leather chest plate and front leg protectors offleash, on hunt, to avoid brutal cactus due to his focus. He's also the only one that retrieves with no bird damage by instinct and no extra training. Mine has zero interest in toy retrieval though. One odd thing... when he gets a small injury like stepping on something, or insect bites, or bumping into something... he never let's me know about his pain. Is weird, have to check up on him because he never shows discontent. Have not seen that in other hounds breeds of my own. The others usually show you and want it fixed, lol. I would LOVE to bring mine to the ocean. He would be so stoked and probably s*** a brick! American Foxhound is a CLOSE second for quail. Also a fantastic hound breed. They walk a little louder, and occasionally damage bird, but excellent home pets and respectable friends as well.
It's really rare to have a hound that retrieves. I've had four walkers and two blue ticks. One of my walkers liked to catch things but he wouldn't bring it back. He'd take the item that you threw to him, take it around the corner and tear it to shreds.
Ol' Dixie!!! Remember her cuz??? Wink another good dog " Gone treeing in Heaven " Believe Faith Trust me!!! Y'all git 'r done now us hear!!!??? Love 💕 you, love All Everyone ok?

They are awesome dogs! I would add that mine has a lot of his own ideas on what he wants to do -- an independent spirit! lol!
Handsome Blue Tick! My Redbone Hound has a very similar personality.
Thanks!

My dog has no desire to retrieve! I had a Lab Mix prior to him and this lab loved retrieving and swimming.

My coon hound doesn't let me know about pain either. My vet says he is "stoic"! However, when he does get doctored, he loves it!
