We just rescued a full blood blue tick, 4 years old and it makes me super sad bc he has NEVER ever barked since we've had him. The shelter also said that they've never heard him bark or howl. He's finally opening up and not being so shy. But he came to our spca from another spca so who knows what he's been through. He is the absolute BEST dog though. So sweet and loveable! He was named Blue so we just kept his name bc we also don't know how long he's had that name. It may have been his name in the past too.

So glad you rescued your sweet boy! He's still young. Thank you for giving him a chance.

@@Houndpups thank you! He also has a brother that we also rescued from the same place 4 years ago. His name is Finley and he's a pit bull/austrailian Kelpi mix (his mom was a kelpie and also in the shelter and from his looks, it's obvious that his other half is pit bull- blue pit from what we can tell) Both Blue and Finley have become the best of friends and play together on the daily. They're the same age, with Finley's bday on June 1st 2018 and Blues bday Aug 28 2018. We've had him since September 10. And although he's still yet to bark or make any sound at all, he does whimper and yip in his dreams from what I've heard- so he CAN bark or howl if he wanted to. He just is quiet. It makes me wonder if his previous owner somehow punished Blue when he did bark. Because besides being super quiet, he's also very timid, like I said in my previous post. He was so scared the first night that we had him, that he threw up multiple times 🥺 but he's since been to the vet and he's in perfect health and he's finally gained weight. When we adopted him, he was extremely underweight and the shelternsaid he'd barely eat. Now we have to have one of those anti bloat bowls for him bc he goes NUTS for food and is food motivated when training. He's super smart and easily trainable and is just a joy to our family. As well as Finley, he has 2 human sisters who are 11 and 9 and they just ADORE him! We couldn't be happier! 🐶💙

Do coonhounds make good pets in the city? I don't mind going on lots of walks, but I'm not sure about their disposition to want to follow trails and hunt.

I think it would depend on how close your neighbors are. Coonhounds are vocal. Even with lots of exercise they tend to be talkative and your neighbors probably won't appreciate it. They are also very strong on leash. I'd recommend a training collar to get the dogs attention, even with a buzz. We've had many families who have used that and had good success.

it depends on you and it depends on the dog. I have a Treeing Walker Coonhound that only barks when he sees another dog face to face outside (like walking by our yard). My nextdoor neighbors have two of the same and they carry on all day long. I have a black and tan coonhound that barks in the morning to wake us up, but once we are up whistles through her nose to get attention. I also have a boxer/redbone coonhound mix, who barks whenever she detects someone outside, but normally doesn't.
the other things is, in my house, the people are relatively quiet with each other, so the dogs tend to be the same. My next door neighbors are shouters, so the dogs feel free to do so as well
when my black and tan starts yelping or yodeling or whistling too loud, I start to whisper to her in return and she tries to match my volume.
3 dogs is not scientific (5 if you count my neighbors) but in my experience, within a breed (or sometimes within a litter) some dogs are more naturally vocal than others, and also how loud their environment is makes a difference.
I walk all 3 of mine with a leash and they are pretty good on a leash in known environments. when they go somewhere new, there are more distractions, so they are likely to pull more. one of my 3 if you let him off leash in an open area, he will follow his nose and ignore you, but the other two stay close by, so again it depends on the dogs, so you still will need to pay attention to know what your specific dog's tendencies are and then don't set them up for failure by putting them in a situation that you know they are likely to do the wrong thing in.
not a professional do g trainer or anything, I just try to figure out where my dog is, and then work with them to get where people would want to be around them! short of that, I let them do what they want most of the time which is sleep a fair bit, chew on bones and toys, and eat.
a coonhound would work in a city, but that doesn't mean it woudl be easy, but if you put in the effort to build a daily routine and a strong personal relationship, most of them will follow the routine pretty well.
your mileage may vary! good luck!
