I’m so glad to know there are people out there who are dedicated to helping out coonhounds! For anyone thinking of adopting, I can say from experience that any extra work you may have cut out for you because of the breed will be more than worth it for all the personality these dogs have and the love they’ll give you. My family rescued an amazing black and tan coonhound in 2013 and loved her every day that she was in our lives. She passed away unexpectedly three days ago and will be missed dearly. To anyone out there who wants a true best friend, coonhounds are the way to go.

I rescued a black and tan and she's my best buddy...I admit that I didn't know how stubborn and independent they can be but as long as I don't walk her the same route all the time she does great...she doesn't bark all the time ...they are such sweet loving loyal dogs and Id definitely rescue another

last year we rescued a pup found as part of an abandoned litter. they obviously have hound in them as four had tri-coloring with some ticking. my good boy has mostly shepherd coloring with some white on his neck & chest & ticking on his front paws, hound eyes, floppy ears, & that signature bay! i love him. don't know why hounds are so undervalued. ours is now an 85 lb love bug.

I have had coonhounds forever, got my first blue ticks as a rescue back in 1976...my uncle drove me from Ohio to Tennessee to get Sally (the mom) and Duffy (her pup) and I have been adopting coonhounds ever since...I currently have two Walkers - Eleanor Rose from California, and Roscoe Henry from Ohio.
Please tell anyone you know who is wanting to adopt a dog to consider a coonhound, they are the most loyal and loving dogs, great with kids!
and on a side note.....I also have multiple guinea pigs, my coonhounds just adore guinea pigs!!!

We recently took into our home Betsy who is now Miss Libby. She is my second coony rescue dog and first from ABTCR. She has wrapped herself totally in the lifestyle these prescious gems deserve to have. Although she lets us know everday how much she appreciates what we have given her , it is us that feel like we are the winners in this relationship. They truly are , a breed of their own. Give them a chance, and they will own your heart, as will you theirs.

Found my Black & Tan Coonhound as a bag of bones in a ball field. Never found an owner and the closest shelter said the area was a "common drop-off spot". Ended up keeping him and now he's a clumsy, hyper, nut case, lol! He's a bit ... different from my other dogs, but I love that silly dog. :)

We got red tick for 3 years now. Started pup as future hunting dog for the boy, But hang with my wife as a little pup now house dog. Never used bathroom in house never. Got sick 1 time throw up but really that was a accident. He crawl under bed took his dog blanket put over his head he was so embarrassed. Never torn up anything of value. Somebody get close to house he alert you even him inside. Amazing dog most amazing we didn't have train him hardly at all. He act like he know proper way act. Family member get sick he will watch over them 24/7 until well. Outside he see snake or any other dangerous animal's he keep family members away from it. Anything like our dog all they ask is give them a chance. Talking about dog appreciate little small stuff like a good warm meal, cold water hot day. little dog treats he will show his appreciation right back to you. That our experience with that type breed of dog. Hope this helps.

My wife found a listing of our soon to be B&T pup at out local rescue in Wi. on line. The Dad was a B& T and mom is a tree walker . The people left mom pregnant with 14 pups in a field and took the dad when they moved . They were born at the Buffalo Valley rescue in Mondovi Wi. where we picked number 7 and named her Shinny Girl. She is 23" tall and is 2 1/2 years old now . She has become my baby and the biggest lap dog that I have ever had . She sleeps under the covers in our bed that she shares with mom , dad , or I should say me and our springer . Yup 4 of us in our bed and I love it. She loves her home and we love her.

Ours was transported from South Carolina then to Philadelphia. He had been in the shelters for Six months. Finally when he was transported from Philadelphia to Lancaster PA. He was in the local animal shelter for two days. He was sick of LRI and they did not make him available for adoption. But My wife and I promised to take over the responsibility to treat him , and they agreed to let us adopt him. They named him Cooper but he wasn't answering to the name. We at home decide to run through as many names as we could think of and see if he would respond. About five minutes in my daughter said " Come here Niko", and he responded, Every time. So now we have Niko . About a year now .

Two years ago when volunteering at the SPCA in Reno, NV, I came across an 8 year old bluetick coon hound. He had been abandoned after being a hunting dog. Bullet fragments in his mouth and left in the woods to die. That was 2 years ago. He is the most loving and fun dog. He is now part of our pack of three rescue dogs. I would seek out hound dogs in the future. What great dogs.

I just found 2 coonhound coonhound puppies on the side of the road down from my house they can't be more that 3 months old, they looked to be left there and so I went around just in case they were some ones and asked and let the shelters know just in case someone was missing them. I couldn't in my heart take them to a shelter near me cause they are all kill shelters l. One of them I gave away to a really nice family , the other I decided to keep as my own his name is Hunter I named him after the streed I found him on. I have never even met a coonhound before but let me tell ya I don't think I will ever want anything but a compound from now on :) so thank you for the video

So you want a lab. Try a coonhound, seriously. Mine knew that infants are fragile the first time he met one. He even wrapped up around the baby. He also played with the older kids, getting his big floppy ears yanked on mercilessly and tail going the whole time. He "bit"me once, which was squeezing my arm slowly while staring into my eyes. When i said enough he released and never went harder than that, even in playing his "snap" never went closed more than that. He always watched out for the kids

And Yes These dogs are officially City Dogs.. Apartment dogs... even. Please don't be scared of having these beautiful creatures in the city. It is possible. Thank you for all of you for making our home complete. If it wasn't for all of your hard work, love and kindness, My home wouldn't be so much filled with love. Thank you.
Gentle Jake's Coonhound Rescue -Foster Updates on Adoptable Hounds
    ╰ღ╮CONGRATULATIONS ROXY╭ღ╯
We are pleased to welcome Roxy (formerly Rosie) and her Parents - Ryan and Chris - to our ever expanding 'Repeat Adopter's' Club! We could not be happier for them!
Roxy's former life was clearly not a pleasant one. She had been found by a good samaritan in the community, who carried her into a local shelter as she was too weak and thin to stand/walk on her own. She had suffered from abuse, weighing only 23 lbs. and literally starving to death; she had difficulty with her rear leg and she was unable to raise her head off the floor. Her examining vet discovered Roxy's neck had previously been broken and healed on its own, forming a calcium deposit. While this in itself did not present an issue for Roxy, it explained why she held her head in a particular fashion.
With lots of TLC provided by her Foster Mom, and opportunities to learn from Connie's pack of rescue dogs, it did not take long for Roxy to come out of her shell, and flourish. Soon she was no longer afraid of loud noises, and began to enjoy playing --getting a chance to be puppy-ish and carefree. Connie described Roxy as "The best yet!" of all the foster dogs she has had to date --and she's had a LOT!!
When Ryan and Chris recently lost their dog Déja, who had passed away at age 17, they grew concerned that their remaining fur-child, Boomer (adopted from Gentle Jake's in 2013) was missing the company of his best friend and playmate. They felt another Coonhound was the only way to go. It is very heartwarming to know that our sweet Roxy will now spend her days hanging out in Toronto, frolicking with her big brother, Boomer, and being adored every day by her parents, who love receiving Roxy's gentle, tiny kisses.
We are forever thankful to all who had a hand in Roxy's rescue, including the tireless network of volunteers who helped transport Roxy to her Foster home; and Connie Brown for providing a loving and supportive environment and putting the sparkle back in Roxy -- and last but not least, Ryan and Chris, for opening their hearts and home to another rescue dog. HAPPY TAILS!!!

Wow, I came here from looking up Walkers & this was the last thing I expected to see. I've done rescue/adoption (6 @ one time, my biggest) of dachshunds, and I know coonhounds in particular are very intelligent dogs. I guess it's because I'm on the west coast in a metropolitan area. We used to have the underground dachshund railroad for transport. Just for information sake, how is your transport system, are you able to get a dog from coast to coast or what areas do you serve? Also the dachshunds I rescued were old & old dogs are perfect for someone who wants a more restful dog, puppies aren't for everyone. This might gain you a few more homes! Best of luck...I'm 68 now & can no longer handle a dog of any size, so Pomeranians it is, heh :)
