    Killin' That Ally !!! For those who say add a cooling fan. Cooling was doing it's job. Notice the trans temp was the same as water temp, so even with adding more air, the radiator is still going to heat the fluid to the radiator temp. So unless you put an Aux cooler inline AFTER the radiator, in hopes it'll cool even further before the fluid re enters the transmission.

    An auxiliary fan for the trans cooler would help keep temps in check

    I'm amazed that the AT545 didn't fry it's torque converter.

    I have an AT545behind my t444e International I removed the trans cooler lines from the radiator and and run it through a fan powered heater core. never goes over 185 now except once when the fan failed.

    I have the same bus, Thomas 5.9 cummins, use it for production, get the same results uphills. Took it across country.

      THCPiLLZ nice, my parents have one too, been across country about 4 times, no problems, but been looking into a mt643 swap mainly for lockup gear in 3rd might be nice going downhill, and might not have to worry as much about heating the trans uphill

    so this would not be a good swap for a ram pickup that see's a lot of towing

    I don't entirely understand this exercise. How much weight is being hauled? Are you showing the 5.9 as the weak point or the alison 545? Or the inadequate support equipment ie; trans cooler or radiator... ?

    Thanks for the video. What trans cooler are you running? I have a 96 Thomas with a 7.3 and at545 that im just getting into building into a toy hauler/skoolie. Any advice is appreciated.

      Hey, I’ve got a 98 Crown International 38 footer with an alistar 7.3 D190 married to a AT545. Currently turning it into a toy hauler as well. The top speed is 55mph, 58 if you get brave with the rpm, the limiting factor is the at545, the same bus which the same power plant can expect a topspeed of around 75 if running an appropriate Allison 2000 series transmission with no loss in low range performance. DONT REGEAR YOUR REAREND, while this may work for other builds, being intended for small dump trucks the 545 can’t handle it and you will grind to a halt on most mountain highways, even in first if you have a large rig like mine. As soon as I have 2 grand lying around (like that’s ever going to happen) I’m going to upgrade from the 545 to an Allison 2000 series.

    I wandering if moving the trans cooler in front of the bike would change it much. The bikes not that big to restrict air flow. But I wander. Great job keeping it cool! That's definitely how you get to Alaska and back by taking care of your bus. Thumbs up!

      buggyalstare1971 thanks man, and ya I’m not sure about the cooler, I didn’t think the bike would be a big restriction but who knows

    Why don’t you have an exhaust brake on your rig ?.

  • @razor3003

    Can you get cruise control for one of these or is that just out of the question?

    • @OtherworldlySleepAdventures
      @OtherworldlySleepAdventures 9 месяцев назад +1

      There are aftermarket cruise control systems that don't depend on the type of vehicle, but I wouldn't trust it. If the Chinesium fails, then you might crash.

    That god damned transmission. If it just had a lock up torque converter, the transmission would be nice and cool AND you'd go up hills faster because you wouldn't be wasting 25% of your engine power just creating heat and turbulence in the open torque converter.

  • @BriansRCStuff

    Wow, that is so slow! Is it floored? I wouldn't think a bus is that heavy.... but I guess it really struggles. How much power does that engine make?

    • @ZephodBeeblebrox
      @ZephodBeeblebrox 6 лет назад

      I’m guessing you dropped to 1 then selected a speed and when you reached that speed, hit the brake to drop it down 10mph lower and kept repeating the cycle?

    • @N8sk8bus
      @N8sk8bus  6 лет назад +1

      I only start out in first on grades steeper than 9 percent, 7-8 percent grades I usually start out in 2nd or 3rd but ya I pick a speed once I get there I brake hard and drop 10mph, I have a switch for my clutch fan too which helps a lot making a little extra drag

    You trying to burn it up driving in low on a flat for that ling. I don't get what you doing. For what I seen it was a flat when you had it in low.

      Get alison1000 with cooler and lock up converter would be just fine pull this big ole bus with a 5.9 cummings just make sure you have low gears in the rear. Of a 2000 if its 2wd only.
