Great advise. My weakness is keeping mini braids in longer than I should. By the time I take them down my roots sre so matted from build up and my hair breaks with knots. I literally see my hair slide out attached to a knot. Its discouraging coz I try to be gentle. This time around, im going to refresh my mini braids (or twists, still undecided on the style) after 4 weeks and see if that improves. But I can see growth from 2 months ago, trimming today. Your tips really help
Hey hun 🫶🏽 Oh when you talk about twists, it takes me back to when I tried them out and it was a mess! I can totally relate. This is why my number one recommendation is always braids, no matter what size, please try them out and see what works better for you ❤️ Thank you for being here beautiful 💗💕
@Ten-wk5zk Braids are definitely better than twists, if your hair is very Coily and kinky. I keep my hair in plaits as well, and the length and moisture are unmatched. What may help you is making them a bit bigger. Mini braids can be very time consuming, and you may enjoy the install and takedown process a lot better keeping them medium to small instead of mini. Blessings to you Sis! 💕
That is why when people say our natural hair is easy to maintain when it is out but we just want it to look like a different texture, I disagree heavily because our kinky and coily hair needs very special attention at the ends especially when it is exposed
Thank you sis Zinhle for another great video! I must admit, when you said we must ALWAYS have our ends tucked in and hidden, I was like NO!!! because having my Afro out and high crowning is my favourite style. Also, it informs the narrative that Afros cannot survive natural elements and must therefore remain hidden, which contributes to the social erasure of natural black hair from public spaces. And I am an Afro activist 😉 so it is important to me that my hair be out there. I will however try using the natural gels when I have my Afro out and see how it goes, especially considering how your advise has helped my Afro grow and become healthier. Just struggling with the idea that my ends need to always be hidden! 😭
Hey hun, thank you for taking the time to share such a beautiful comment. I wish I could give you the biggest fist pump and high five, you are my kind of natural. 👏🏾 As your Afro grows longer you’ll find that you can have it out and still have the ends tucked don’t worry about that. As black / African people we are enough in every room whatever hairstyle we decide to wear but I hear you, a natural hairstyle hits different and an Afro is the GOAT. The reality is that we get tired and our hair also gets tired - we don’t always have to perform to be the picture of black pride and excellence everyday. We can rest and our hair deserves to rest as well. Our ancestors taught us that our melanin radiates from within - so even in our cornrows, braids and Afros we bring heavy weight to any table, drizzle drizzle, 50/50 ( lol I blame TikTok for that one)
I think one of the saddest things about all the love, time, care and effort put into natural hair is having to walk on eggshells around it rather than enjoy & wear it out daily like other hair types. It's so freaking unfair. But sometimes I wonder about my African ancestors who didn't have braids, weaves & other extensions. Were they walking about bald? Or had genius ways of still growing their hair while enjoying it. I'm pretty sure they didn't have mass produced store-bought conditioners & silk pillow cases. I feel we need some ancient wisdom on this, lol cos having to wear your own hair for nothing more than a week just to retain length is seriously sad 😢
Hey hun, this is why I have a series on my channel called ‘African Hair Secrets’ to truly understand how our ancestors did it. In the last episode I spoke about the Himba and Mbalantu people of Namibia who keep their hair in protective hairstyles their whole lives and reached insane lengths and health because of it. Is it sad or does it require us to look at our hair differently? 🤔 ruclips.net/video/rIuUyihzWkI/видео.html As far as commercial hair products and all the other modern hair inventions, I have so many videos coming on that. The eggshells disappear when we start to truly understand it and stop forcing it to all the things that it isn’t. I absolutely love your comment, I’ll try my best to make a video specific for this, it’s so profound and so valid! 🫶🏽 Thank you for being here 🥰
You know it brings comfort to know that due to our texture, breakage is unavoidable. Sometimes it can be discouraging to see a few broken strands. And i used to think i was still doing something wrong.
The ‘protective’ braids aren’t protective, pulling at your hair and the extra weight and most people don’t take care of their hair in braids and leave it unmoisturized. Excess breakage is bad, bad, bad. I wear braids with only my hair and tuck it under a scarf everyday. I refresh it at night with water/leave in mixed in a bottle if necessary and oil my scalp on Wednesdays (I was on Sundays). I also have majority type 3c hair with 4a at my crown and looser hair at the base of my neck (3b).
I do the same, I usually do cornrows, and you're right! I have seen a huge difference! People would prefer I braid my hair, but I would rather have healthy hair.
After all these years, I still recommend braids with no extensions. It’s practical, it work wonders and it’s personally my favourite. I agree with you 👌🏾❤️💃🏽
Hi Zinhle, I love your content. Tlhemma I am struggling with regrowing my traction alopecia that I have gotten over the years of braiding. I loved the tiny bantu knots idea. With recovering traction alopecia in the lines that were parted repeatedly, I have thin wisps of hair that is just not passing that stage. The rest of my hair (besides my crown which clearly has breakage and i need to moisturise more I have learnt) is fine more or less. What do you recommend? Plus my edges are painfully dry, if i spray my hair, they dry within seconds....i am so confused
Hey hun, thank you for sharing your experience and being brave enough to be vulnerable 🫶🏽💕 Firstly I would recommend that you consult with your doctor about it, so you can find out at what stage it’s at. If certain issues go on for years, the damage might be permanent and you need to know the option you have to fix it. Secondly, I don’t want to give you a long list of things to try because I know you’ve probably already been through a lot. I recommend that you: 1. Make sure your hair is always moisturised - use the LCO method. (as mentioned in the video) Spraying the hair is not enough you also need a moisturiser and oil. 2. Please apply oil and massage it in everyday. I recommend you watch this onion oil video (onion is very powerful in waking up dormant hair follicles) : ruclips.net/video/n5AA3O7fzIo/видео.html
Hey hun, please let your doctor know so you could try another option. I’m so sorry about that. It was probably shedding caused by internal changes in your body. Our hair always reflects the changes that we make physically, mentally and spiritually but well done on being aware enough to see the changes. I know your hair will recover fast 🙏🏾❤️
If you have fine hair/ low density then there’s nothing you can do to get more hair BUT a lot of the time we underestimate the true potential of our hair, so to see how much hair you really have the potential to get I would recommend you do a long term protective style and do my hair growth challenge : ruclips.net/video/1a7425AvLu8/видео.html In this video I talk about getting new growth ( even more hair on the scalp) that I never expected : ruclips.net/video/UwlHuYLyLMw/видео.html
I used JBCO with Chebe and mixed it in the green blue magic grease. My hair is naturally fine and prone to breakage if I don't keep it moisturized. That combination grew my hair thicker.
Yes because you’ll end up manipulating the hair more than it needs to be. They should be kept in for at least a month. You need to question why you think it doesn’t last - could your maintenance be better and have you accepted how your cornrows look with new growth? 🤔
I try everything. It seems like nothing is working. I keep it in 1 big brand to the back. I grease my hair. I just don't get it why my hair is getting thin in the front. It looks like a ball spot. Help me
The major cause of thinning especially in the front is pulling. Because you tie the hair at the back, your front hairs are overstretched and it ends up being pulled out of its root. Consider changing your hairstyle, Consider a loose hairstyle and begin working to regrow your front part by: - spraying warm water or a herbal tea on the front - apply your oil to the scalp - massage for 2 or more minutes - wear a plastic cap and sit for 15 minutes - apply sealant, and style, try 2 Strand twist - keep the style in for 2 weeks with a midweek spray repeat - try for 8 weeks and exam the results Let me how it goes😊
Hey hun, it’s so important to know what hairstyles work better for your hair health and your lifestyle. So please explore with other ones and make sure they aren’t tight. Please try loose braids no extensions and see how it responds. Secondly, dry hair and a dry scalp will always give you problems. Spray water then apply grease (and if this isn’t working try a natural oil mix instead) Also remember to moisturise the lengths of your hair properly
This is not just good advice, it’s amazing 👏🏾🔥👌🏾. I couldn’t agree more. Thank you for taking the time to drop these gems. I love the community aspect of a natural hair journey, no one is an island and we’re always one solution away from success ❤️🥹🙏🏾
A good place to start is to buy Shea butter and add your favourite oils to it. That will already have so many more benefits and be way better for your health 🫶🏽
@RoselineVayi-bo3hf I agree with Z! You can also add a bit of organic vegetable glycerin to your Shea butter. It adds a bit of moisture that will make you ask why you ever used a cream to begin with! 😅💕
Hey hun, remember there are natural gels and there are those other synthetic ones. From personal experience I love natural gels because they are exceptionally hydrating and moisturising. Eg. Okra gel and Flaxseed Gel. When it comes to gels, whichever one you pick and however you use them - it boils down to the person because it works amazing for some people and others, not so much. So it’s worth mentioning. If you don’t want to even try gels, that’s perfectly fine, there are the 3 other options to try. ❤️🫶🏽
can oil acts as a moisturizer. Because i only do Liquid and Oiling. I hardly do moisturizing with butter and cream. But i really want to grow healthy hair. But am blessed (I dont want to say i dont have money). Am just managing. Pls what will you recommend for me to do
Hey hun, some oils can be nourishing and even moisturising like castor oil and olive oil but it’s recommended to have a moisturiser (a good natural butter works amazing). You’ll notice that when you include that moisturiser (butter / cream) your hair will get to whole other level of softness and nourishment you won’t believe 🥹❤️🥰💃🏽 Remember LCO
Yes of course, It’s so important to moisturise even in protective styles, even better because the hair retains moisture for longer in protective styles and it prevents breakage 🫶🏽
No there are other options, but natural oils are the best, in my opinion especially in terms of having little to no side effects, actual results, health wise and the role that they have played in history. The other options for scalp care are ‘Hairfood’ but most of them are petroleum based. They are also known as ‘grease’ Please do your own research / experiment what works best for you ❤️🫶🏽

I usually braid the roots and then twist. It has eliminated the tangling at the roots by 100%. Maybe you could try that if it works for you
