Been there, done that (last year I hiked 1,040 miles before blowing my knee out). I'm breaking in a new one and hope to thruhike the entire AT in a year or so. I turned 70 last year. The trip is worth the pain. My decision to thruhike came right after completing the Trail in the fall of 2022 in sections.
There's nothing quite like the entire thruhike experience.
New subscriber, "Tinker," halfway, 2023. Yes, I healed up enough to make it to mile 1100 (plus a couple) before the end of 2023. This is week 4 of total knee replacement recovery.
