I wanted to thank you. I had already ordered a 750 from B&H when I ran across your D500 reviews. Even though I started out determined that my next camera would be FF I considered your results and watched several of your videos more than once. Then I saw a video from another reviewer that convinced me. I bought a 500 and returned the 750 unopened. Thank you for having strong opinions and for speaking the truth as you see it.

I've been preparing myself to upgrade from the D700, this might actually be the one! I've always seen the D600, 610 and 750 as "downgrades" for the D700 and the D800 and 810 hasn't impressed me or been different enough. I would however miss that commando flash :/
A D900 announcement would be nice right about now :P

D500 has one tiny issue, its a giant eyed hoot owl and is quick to blow specular highlights by about 3/4 stop, hardcore testing with a light meter and test target proves that also

Ken, as a D750 shooter, how does the dynamic range on the D500 stand up to it? Raising shadows in Lightroom say up to iso6400....does the D500 shadows compare well?? Cheers

I was always a super fanboy of their "Advanced" line of cameras. I started off with a D100, then a D200 and finally a D300 that I still run that to this day. I was going to try and upgrade to a D3 or a D4, but then this came out... I think my upgrade plans have changed.

Really do appreciate your honesty in reviewing this Nikon. Like you mentioned, many used to think you a Nikon phan boyee, myself included. Again, thank you for your no BS approach to telling it how it is. The D500 will be my first Nikon DSLR coming from Canon/Pentax. Was looking for better pixel pitch and dynamic range in the Pentax K3. The auto focus at long range, 300mm+ ( I shoot birds) was atrocious. Ready to get my socks blown off after the mediocrity of the a fore mentioned manufacturers. Cheers to you Ken.

    • @soumyadeepmitra3680
      @soumyadeepmitra3680 8 лет назад

I can suggest you to look at D750 in that case, unless of course, you also plan on using the same camera for fast action shots, like wildlife or sports. With slightly higher resolution and with a full frame sensor, I feel the D750 will be better suited for you.

    • @naturalbornhustler13

+TEMc IMHO I do not see much use of a D500 there. You can purchase a D750 if you want to purchase a new camera, as it has a full frame sensor so you can use it in low light scenarios, or use the wide angle lenses. D500 is more geared for genres like wildlife and sports.

I shoot walking real estate tours with a go pro on a gimbal stabilizer
and I really enjoy the quality, however I dont like the button system on
the go pro, etc. So I am looking for a camera that will give me an
excellent image with excellent switches/buttons, with a wide
angle similar to a go pro hero 3. Lastly I will be using this camera
also for shooting high quality real estate photos. I have searched for
weeks and I am torn between a Canon 80D, Nikon D500 (like the quality
of images), a Nikon D750, or the Panasonic GH4 (dont like the color
output). Just looking for more input?

The only deal breaker I have heard of so far for this camera is if you want it for video, the extra 1.5 crop could be a deal breaker. For me, I have never shot video on a still camera so as soon as the prices start falling I will be in the market for one of these bad boys. I have the D300s and always loved that, but this is just a whole new dimension. Well done Nikon, you might be a bit late, but you have arrived with a bang!

Hi Tony, I just [urchased a D500. I had a shoot the very next day so, I did take the D500 but just as a backup camera (THANK GOD FOR THAT). I had the strangest experience, I put an SB 700 on the D500 and put it on AUTO TTL, guess what, the flash wouldn't fire! Yesterday for my next shoot, I faced the same issue. So, I made a small change in the Flash. I put the flash on MASTER, and it started working fine. Is this how it's supposed to happen or is it a glitch only with my camera? Please advise. The second issue, I set the camera to use the SD card as a "Back up RAW" (as using that in my laptop is easier, but when I inserted the SD in my laptop, there were no pictures in there. It's not backing up. Glitch? Or should I take it for repairs?

The camera looks great. However, when you said that if you had one camera, you'd ditch the D750. What is your view on the effect that would have on your best lenses? You have the 24-70 on there which is a brilliant lens but isn't wide on a DX. You wouldn't stick the 14-24 on here either... so if you DID only have one camera, would be satisfied with DX lenses or just accept the crop factor on the FX lenses?

    Hi from Australia!
    Please help! I have a Nikon D4 with Nikon FX lenses 24-70mm 2.8 VR / 70-200mm 2.8 VR ll and the /70-200mm f/4 and 105mm Micro 2.8 VR oh yes and 85mm 1.4G.
The thing is I bought recently a nikon D750 but have made a decision to buy the D500 after your review. I rang the store where I bought the 750 only a month ago and am sending it back in exchange for the D500. My question is: Will all my FX Lenses work WELL with the D500? +Carlos Santos all your FX lenses will work fine, yes, but they will of course be cropped in their image projection.
no, not true, pixel pitch is relational to that, not sensor size, there is MORE translational data per MM on your DX sensors than FF anyway......4.2micrometer pitch on the D500.

For photographers who do not necessarily need to use video, a DSLR is a nicer camera to use, rather than a mirrorless. A few years ago I switched totally to Fujifilm and bought a whole string of their mirrorless cameras. But more recently had a hankering for the extra responsiveness of a DSLR. So I looked at a D500 again. But soon found Nikon have kept the price artificially high, making it unviable. Which has sent all the potential Nikon customers over to have a look at the Pentax K3 III, which is now a better camera. It's unlikely I shall go back to a mirrorless again. For photography I prefer using a DSLR. Maybe Fujifilm might see which way the wind is blowing and produce a DSLR? We live in hope.

realised I may of made a mistake of buying the D500 due to not taking in consideration the lenses I have are mostly Fx over dx. An expensive mistake to make on my part.

only if youre doing mostly landscape and portraiture,.......... ALL your FX lenses will work on the D500

D500 is first a sport and wildlife camera. None of those others can stand a chance against it with anything that moves. So what would be the point of comparison ?

You said: "AF is bleezing bast". I say "It depends on the lens". I tested mine with the 58mm 1.4, and the AF is slow. Period. Have one problem with the camera so far - it doesn't like Lexar SD 128gb 1000x (150mb/s). It gives error after each single picture. I take out the card and plug it back in and it works again for few shots, then Err again. The same card works perfectly in D810.

Some cameras just have a personality. Hasselblad have IT. Mamiya (RB67) have IT. And there are a few others... Nikon F2, Nikon F3, Nikon EM (odd little point and shoot that was in competition with the Olympus OM10 at the time). I've never owned a Leica but wish I did. D500 is everything you could wish for in a camera. Wish I'd kept the RB tho...

+Theoria Apophasis Those are great cameras but always felt lack of commander mode plain sucks for us folks who use that feature. I do understand why sometimes it is necessary when R&D dollars square into the equation. Also bear in mind Nikon wants to sell you their latest radio controlled flash unit which you might not buy if your camera has a commander mode. Bottom line...the money factor underlines demand and supply. People get excited when they see all the new bells and whistles on the new cameras; but there is no such thing as a free lunch.

+Theoria Apophasis In a few videos you've mentioned the superiority of full frame cameras for portraiture due to their inter-tonal depth capture that dx sensors can't match. In the time that you've used the D500 how do you think it would do with portraits? I need a camera that has a fantastic autofocus system and great lowlight for the concert shooting that I do, but I also do a lot of portraiture and can only afford one camera. Thanks!

the signal processing is awesome, and OF COURSE D7100 is 24MP and 3.8micrometers and D500 is 20MP and 4.2 micrometers
nikon made the perfect balance between the downsides of DX and upsides of FF
but i knew that HAD to be the case even before i got the D500 in hand.

Thank you ken for your great info. on this camera, i was hoping this was going to be an epic camera. after the D5 video i had my doubts about the D500, and was considering the D7200 to go along with my D750 but now don't know maybe save up and get the D500. maybe both, i do like the fact that the D7200 has the same lay out as my 750, the 500 is like the D300 on top anyway. Hey on a different note i got my Tokina AT-X PRO 28-70mm F/2.8 AF lens. It is in mint condition. this is an amazing lens. You should try it if you haven't already.

Bro for a poor photographer with a budget of just 400 dollars, who wants weather sealing, uncompressed raw and full magnesium body, would you suggest either the D300 or D300s in 2016/17? are they relevant, even if we are willing to live with the 12 MP sensor limitation? I wanted to go for the D7000, but the sensor oil issue and the lack of magnesium alloy didnt impress me. Or shall I just take the bait and sell off my kidney for a used D3 which can be had for something over a little north of 1100 bucks, or shall I just go for a Nikon D700? please enlighten this confused soul. Thank you

Hey Ken, love the videos & how you tell it straight. I currently own a Nikon D7200, Nikon 35mm, Tamron 10-24mm, 24-70mm & the 70-200mm lens. I do still enjoy using the 7200, however, I am looking to upgrade. At this point, I'm shooting landscapes, wildlife, sports & starting little with portraits. So I guess I'm looking for a recommendation if this camera will fit the bill going forward. Let me know your/anyones thoughts. Keep up the good work!
