  • This is a reupload of a video I made a while back talking about a set of wings I made for cosplay/costuming. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Enjoy :-D
    Let's see. Supplies= 1-8ft 1.25 in pvc,
    1-10ft 1/2 in pvc,
    2- 1ftx1ft pices of plywood,
    2 1.25in 45 degree pvc elbows,
    hanger strap,
    2 pulleys (the ones I bought had hooks attached that were a pain to remove),
    paracord,
    hoops or something to use as pulls,
    straps (they sell straps for securing things down that have the clamps on them, near the paracord I think),
    and screws. 2 2in for the pulley axles, 2 1in for the paracord anchors, and screws for securing the hanger strap and wings to the plywood, and for holding the 2 plywood pieces together. (have the nuts for all these)
    Tools= saw (I use a jigsaw) drill with bits, screwdriver
    I THINK that covers supplies.

    I'd like to mention, the PVC pipe skeleton actually makes them surprisingly durable! I used to have a wooden wing skeleton for a cosplay I did a while ago, the wood actually started to get cracks from y'know just wear and tear on them from use. I was looking into making/getting a new skeleton and came across this. I made them and wore them to a few events and even when they got smacked pretty hard they didn't show any signs of any breaks, so this is actually a really good skeleton if you plan to go to, say Comicon or something with lots of people. TLDR: This is a great alternative if you are worried about a delicate skeleton getting busted. ^ ^

    I have almost finished my wings using your tutorial, and it was indeed quite easy. And I had no prior technical experience (I have never even drilled a hole in my wall before). I found another solution for the pulley wheel though; I took 2 metal washers, and smaller and much wider rubber washer. I glued the three together and created my own pulley wheel that way. Much simpler, and cheaper too.

    Oh my gosh, dude thanks! This is honesty the best designed, most comprehensible design I've found, and no soldering or wiring skills needed! Thanks so much, I cant wait to build my first prototype 😊
    (Edit: also! I just though about maybe using 2 plates of thermo plastic (? Sorry I dont know what it's called but you heat it and can reshape it the way you heat form pvc!) And you can drill the holes and mount the pvc pipes the same way, but it would likely be a lot more comfortable and close fitting, as you can shape it to your back, and sand the edges down very nicely.

      You slipped and fell off a cliff. While falling, you started to consider your options on how to survive, and figured that you'd be safest if you had wings. You pulled out your phone and searched RUclips for how-to videos. After several videos, mine was the easiest to replicate. You managed to build them just before impact and fly to safety!

    • @UncleSilverGaming
      @UncleSilverGaming  7 лет назад +2

      Of the top of my head, rubber washer for the screws on the back plate would help. The whole thing can be a little squeaky when walking around, and rubber washers might cut that down. I also had an idea for a way to attach the pull cords so I can raise the wings and still have my hands free, but I haven't had the chance to try it yet. 2016 wasn't the best year for me as far as free time went. And of course you can use my ideas. Hopefully I get to see pics on Twitter :-)

    • @LisaMarie-zd3qi
      @LisaMarie-zd3qi 7 лет назад

      no kidding, wasn't a great year...this project is for my halloween costume so i dont end up just doing a last minute face paint. I was thinking about connecting both cords and running them down sort of a curved pipe to one side for one hand use, or maybe even something to attach to your arm...I guess it'll be trial and error.

    How did you do your heat forming on the pvc? And may I use your concept on a pair of my own wings?

    • @UncleSilverGaming
      @UncleSilverGaming  7 лет назад

      For heat forming, I used a heat gun. I'll link the one I use. As for the process itself, it's basically just evenly heating it up and when you achieve the shape you need, letting it cool for a couple minutes. Oh, wear gloves, because it can get a little hot, and be careful not to over heat them. As far as using my concept, you absolutely may, but I wanna see pictures :-) Remember, I'm @SilverGreg78 on Twitter.

    What size drill bit did you use for the holes?

    • @UncleSilverGaming
      @UncleSilverGaming  7 лет назад +1

      For the screws holding the wood together, I think 3/16 or 1/4 inch. You
      wanna use a size just above the screw diameter so they just barely fit.
      For screws going into the pvc, like the ones attaching the pvc to the
      elbows, you want a size smaller so the screws fit very tight.

    Hi, awesome tutorial, I'm planning on making these, I just had a quick question, how did you secure the straps to the back board? Did you put holes in the straps for the bolts to go through? Just have the straps between the boards and the bolts tightened so much so that they are secure?
    Hope this question makes sense.
    Thank you for such an informative and achievable video!

    • @UncleSilverGaming
      @UncleSilverGaming  5 лет назад

      Yeah, the bolts go through the straps to keep them in place. Since they're the weaved fabric straps, I sort of pushed the bolts through them since I was worried that cutting would weaken the straps.

    • @UncleSilverGaming

      Loosen the screw connecting the wing sections and the pulley wheel. It should hold everything together but not be tightened down. Also, make sure the holes that screw goes through are wider than the screw. If it fits tightly, that'll make it impossible to turn. It needs room to turn in the hole.

    Excellent. I've made a couple pulley style wings for different costumes myself. Though I change my process every time (and several times in the process) so I've never made a tutorial. You've given me some great tips for my current project. I wonder if you would be willing to help a little more by answering a question. In your wings it looks as though there is something running through the fabric for the interior "veins" of the wings. Did you sew these into the fabric or just make seams in the fabric itself?

    • @UncleSilverGaming
      @UncleSilverGaming  8 лет назад

      At some point, I sewed lines in, but for my first set, I drew lines with white pencil. I wanted to double layer the fabric and add shaped metal rods, but just sewing the lines was good for now.

      I had a few ideas for this, but never got around to testing any of them. One was to use carabiners as pulls then clip them to a belt, but that would require the costume to have a belt. Another was to cut slots into the pvc, tie knots in the paracord, then I could pull down, slot the knots in place, then the weight of the wings would hold them in place. (I should really make a video for that, lol.)

    I'm curious if there is a way to attach the pvc pipe so that the wings can "flap" back and forth. I have a feeling that wearing the wings would be trouble with doorways and having the wings fall back would be helpful. I'm not anything close to an engineer, so do you or anyone else have tips for that??? Plz?

    • @UncleSilverGaming
      @UncleSilverGaming  7 лет назад +1

      It's possible to attach them in a way that they swing back when force is
      applied to them, like going through a door, but it would take some
      finessing. Maybe a spring assisted mount system so they'll move back
      when you hit a doorway, but forward again when you're through.
      Interesting.

    • @pikaplushing757
      @pikaplushing757 7 лет назад

    • @UncleSilverGaming
      @UncleSilverGaming  5 лет назад +1

      I did that for a Toothless cosplay. You have to make a cutout into the coat that opens up to get it on then closes with velcro or zippers or something. It takes some finesse, but once it's on, the wings should function normally. Don't forget holes or something to access the pulls to flap the wings.

    What would the supplies be for just one wing? Just half the regular?

    • @UncleSilverGaming
      @UncleSilverGaming  5 лет назад +1

      Pretty much, yeah. I'd recommend making the backplate the same size though. Making it for one wing would center it too much, and it'll look off. Also, if you ever wanna add a second wing, it'll be easier.

    how big was the pulley??

    • @UncleSilverGaming
      @UncleSilverGaming  5 лет назад

      The first time was with a 4 inch pulley, but I rebuilt them with either a 2 or 3 inch and it worked fine.

    I was wondering how heavy this was overall, I'm working on a design right now but I'm not sure how hard it would be to use...

    • @UncleSilverGaming
      @UncleSilverGaming  8 лет назад

      Overall, I'd say it's about 25-30 lbs maybe, but as long as it's securely on your back, it's not a burden at all. I wore it for about 6 hours straight and it was no sweat (well, there was sweat, but it was hot at that convention, lol).

    so I'm a beginner. still learning but what exactly is heat forming? by the way thanks for the vid

    • @UncleSilverGaming
      @UncleSilverGaming  7 лет назад

      Midnight Reaper Heat forming is when you use something like a heat gun to heat something up (in this case pvc) to the point where you can reshape it. When it cools, it'll hold that shape.

    Question why use two pieces of 1/2 ply wood when you're just going to put them together?

    • @UncleSilverGaming
      @UncleSilverGaming  5 лет назад

      I sandwich the straps in between them with the bolts holding the 2 pieces together going through the straps to hold them in place as well. It gives the strapping more hold than a more exterior solution.

    Do you know how many yards of material you needed to fit over both wings? TIA

    • @UncleSilverGaming
      @UncleSilverGaming  6 лет назад

      Amy Gray 2 yards per wing should do it. Get an extra foot on each side just to be safe.

    My character only has one wing though, (Asia from black clover) would this way still work?

    • @UncleSilverGaming
      @UncleSilverGaming  5 лет назад +1

      I built them this way specifically to work with one wing. (I originally wanted to do a One Winged Angel Sephitroth, and a steampunk fallen angel with a damaged wing.) The weight distribution will be off, but that can be managed with a little extra strapping.

      I was experimenting with that. The only way seems to be wearing something like a belt and using hooks or rings as pulls that you can latch on to the belt.

    • @AndyDOHD1
      @AndyDOHD1 6 лет назад

      Just what I was thinking too, a few hook and eyes on the back plate, some how.

    Hello me again! Sorry I keep bugging lol, was the first part of the supplies a typo? It’s listed as 1 for each pipe so I’m just checking since I have to half the supplies lol

      1 8ft 1.25 inch and 1 10ft 1/2 inch. You'll cut those to the sizes you'll need.

      Uncle Silver Gaming ok! Sorry for being so bothersome lol, so I’ll need
      ONE 4 ft 1.25 in pvc
      ONE 5 ft 1/2 in pvc
      ONE 1ft x 1ft price of plywood
      ONE 1.25 inch 45 degree elbow pvc
      Hanger strap
      ONE pully (no screw)
      Paracord
      ONE hoop/something to pull
      Straps (metal)
      Screws ( 2.2in for pully for pully axels, ONE 2in for paracord anchors, screws for securing hanger straps/wings to plywood and nuts
      ?
      I’m bad at math and barely passed my math exams, haha

      I never weighed it, but if I had to guess, maybe 10-15 lbs.? I've worn it for hours at a time with no issue, so whatever it is is manageable for sure.

    Might sound a daft question but what is the diameter of the pulley wheels.....they look quite large..and i'm UK and struggling to find a supplier...........Cheers for the great ideas too

    • @daveb3650
      @daveb3650 8 лет назад

      +daveb3650 I can get ones with the hooks attached and saw the metal bits off that I don't need.
      but they look only about 35mm diameter.

    • @UncleSilverGaming
      @UncleSilverGaming  8 лет назад

      +daveb3650 The ones I used were 4 inches, which I think is about 10 cm. They had plastic things on them to hang, which was a pain getting off, but they're perfect other wise. www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-4-in-Clothesline-Pulley-14107/202305420

      UncleSilver Gaming Thanks for the info, I got a couple of small 32mm and the theory worked fine,,,,,made the whole lot (for my daughter) but when she attached the cloth she couldn't lift it....back to the drawing board - i'm assuming that larger pulley wheels might mean it's easier to lift a larger load....Time will tell as I ordered some from Amazon Uk...

      how did you get the hook off, I know you said it was hard

    • @UncleSilverGaming
      @UncleSilverGaming  7 лет назад

      Lol, it was. My first move was to secure the pulley and use the forky side of a hammer to pry it apart. It worked well, but it was hard. If you've got a dremel, you can probably get a saw blade in and cut the axle.

    This is amazing and makes it look much more simple than I thought. I have a question though, are the straps only around your arms? like... idk backpack style? or are there more straps hidden? I'm working on making an Illidan cosplay cos my friend and well.... Illidan is shirtless and im trying to avoid as many straps as possible. back pack like straps would be easy because his hair will cover it, start adding like... chest and harness straps and it starts to lose the effect

    • @UncleSilverGaming
      @UncleSilverGaming  7 лет назад

      Samantha Ojaniemi It's just shoulder straps. One recommendation I didn't mention though. Use rubber washers on all the bolt screws. This whole thing can be noisy and squeaky when you walk since having only backpack straps leaves it slightly wobbly. The washers will help. Good luck!

    What kind of fabric did you use and how much did you need?

    • @UncleSilverGaming
      @UncleSilverGaming  7 лет назад +1

      I used cotton poly blend just because I like the way it flows and it's light, but I think they could support leather. I think it was about 2 yards each side (single layer), but you can go a little bigger so you have more room to work with, or you can make the part that swings out smaller for smaller wings.

    • @melanielundquist6522
      @melanielundquist6522 7 лет назад

      Your notes say 8' of 1.25" pipe and in your video, you said the pipe attached to the back piece was about a foot. So is it safe to assume that the 1.25" pipe you have attached with the 45° elbow, is about 3'? Because in your video, it's looking a little shorter.

    • @UncleSilverGaming
      @UncleSilverGaming  7 лет назад +1

      About 2 feet actually. I always buy a little extra, just in case.
