As a retired railroad locomotive engineer (37 years in the railroad industry), this is one movie railroad scene that gets me a bit upset. For one, the only thing the engineer does is blow the whistle to warn the kids on the tracks. It appears no attempt is made to apply the train's air brakes. The whole consist just moves along as if there's no crew aboard. And lastly, if this had been real life, factoring in the speed and size of the train, it should have been relatively easy to at least slow the train down if not stop on the bridge short of striking the "scared out of their wits" kids. But, that's "Hollywood" for you.
abdulqudz89 yeah because when they shooting this the train wasn't actually behind them it was just getting onto the track by the time they got to the other side. They used a 600 MM camera lens that compressed the images together to make it look like the train was right behind them. So because of that, they actors weren't actually in any danger so they weren't as scared. They tried multiple takes and Rob Reiner kept telling them they needed to be panicking and crying as if they were about to die, but they still didn't look scared enough. Finally Rob Reiner went up to the 4 boys and yelled " Listen you boys, these men are sick of moving this dolly (camera tripod) up and down the track in the hot sun and it's because of you. You guys need to act really upset like you're about to die because if this train isn't gonna kill you, i will" the actors then started crying and that's when they rolled the cameras and shot the take they used in the film
What a lot of people don't know is that this story was based on one of Stephen King's most traumatic life moments. King was an outcast as a child and his only friend was killed by a freight train right in front of him. King called this movie one of the best adaptations of his work because it perfectly captured that moment from his childhood. Not saying it was this scene only that did that, but it's still dark knowing that something like this actually happened.
Always the lonely kids who go on to do the greatest things. Stephen king may have been an outcast as a kid but now he’s written some of my favorite stories ever.
@@liamp1 His childhood experiences as a lonely outcast may also have been part of why the Losers' Club in the novel 'IT' was so convincing. All seven of those kids felt ostracized by classmates for various reasons, mostly beyond their control, and when they started hanging out together that summer, their togetherness felt 'right', like fate.
This actually happened to my friends back in hs. They decided to cross the train bridge while we stayed behind. We told them it was a bad idea and kept drinking. The book part is a real nail-biter. Gordie has a weird intuition, and a moment to wish he was absolutely anywhere else- like taking in the river scenery from an airplane window without a care in the world. The rail thrumming like a fistful of snakes in his hand. The stream down one thigh. Feeling a flash of hatred as Chris and Teddy jump off safely ahead. And trying to outrun a freight train on a trestle with big gaps. The panic and heart racing. It's my favorite excerpt from 'The Body'.

What an iconic scene
So sad what happened to River. He seemed like such a beautiful soul, in addition to being physically beautiful. It’s a rare thing.
1:28 when I’m playing octopus in gym and my friends are still on the other side
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
If the two people driving the train had managed to stop the locomotive, they probably would've lectured Gordie and Vern "You kids need to exercise a lot more caution on train tracks. Anyway, just watch yourselves from now on."
" at least we know when the next train is due. "
🚬😎 thug life.
I love this kind of simple movies that depict friendships
Top 3 for me
With bridge to terabithia and 1917
"Oh, shit!"
i like ducks ow! Ow! My legs!
Highly recommend this movie to anyone who appreciates the friendships of youth.
Gordie: TRRAAAAIIINNNNNN!!
Vern: *Continues to crawl
Why nobody’s done an earr*pe version of that scream is beyond me.
I wish River lived to see his brother Joaquín as the Joker, in the “Joker” movie, because now they both have played in two of the biggest and most successful movies of all time. No doubt he’d be proud that his “Phoenix” family name lives on in big movies.
So anyone here from the Pokemon Music video, Gotcha from Bump of Chicken?
as a kid i watched this movie like 3 times a week. other than ninja turtles, THIS was my favorite thing ever. i'm not sure i've watched it any in the last 25+ years. seeing this clip...i never realized how bad the effects were in this scene. it was all SO REAL so as a kid.
Iam not kinda person who get into tears easily but theres something so sad and gloomy about the movie ,it shooks me well and make me cry EVERY SINGLE TIME i watch it .
His is the best movie ever definitely my favorite movie of all time
Teddy is my favorite character
That little train could have stopped. They weren't even trying to slow down.
Everything about this scene is very nostalgic. ^^
Watching this scene inside a movie theatre in 1987 was 100 x more insane. The noise of the approaching train was deafening :o
this scene was filmed down the road from my grandparents property! The bridge is blocked off now, but u can still check it out, it’s super cool! my dad got to meet some of the filming crew also since he was still living in the area at the time of filming! It’s in Burney California for anyone wondering! If ur in the area check it out:)
When gordie felt vibrations on the rails he knew what was coming TTTTTTRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!! He yelled
