- the ford mondeo 1.8tdci between 2007 and 2011 were fitted with a rubber toothed timing belt in the lower crankcase where a timing chain should be.
i will explain the service life of these belts and why you should remove the wet belt and fit a chain back in its place.
Got to love life-time parts.
These wet belts do last the life of the engine coz when it breaks, that's pretty much the end of engines life 😂
Regards from Romania Mr. Howatt,
My name is Justin and I have a Ford Focus mk2.5 1.8tdci from 2008 (KKDA / KKDB engine). I watched a lot of your videos and I really appreciate them.
A few months ago, just before the distribution changed, the wet belt broke and I destroyed the engine, so I bought a "new" (used) one about 93,000 miles from the UK (KKDA engine). This engine ran excellently on the donor car. From this engine I took the actual engine with the injection pump, without turbo and EGR. Of course I changed the whole distribution on this engine, which was on the chain with a new distribution (F.A.I. chain conversion kitt) and one on the Contitech belt. I preventively changed the cylinder head gasket, although the old one was impeccable. I also rebuilt the injectors. When it is cold, especially in the morning, the engine has a slightly irregular run, emits smoke and has a hesitant ride. As soon as the engine reaches 40 degrees Celsius, it spins very nicely and has an ok run.
Now comes my question: is it possible that the injection has a little advance, that is, to inject a little too much diesel? Is it possible to adjust from the screws that are on the injection pump hub?
Thanks in advance
After getting conflicting information regarding belt/chain fitment to my 2008 reg1.8 Connect,
I took your advice and finally managed to remove the tensioner.
Really pleased to confirm its got a chain fitted...well worth the effort!
Many thanks for your excellent informative videos.
Top man !
cheers
Nice tip on the tensioner, just saved me a sh1t load of time and money on a job I didn't want to do. Focus, built 2008, first registered march 2008. It's got a chain baby, woot woot. Cheers.
Did you just unscrew the tensioner and then screw it back in? No issues with this? Cheers
Nice video. The wet belt is the reason that I only looked at the 2.0 when looking for my Mondeo.
Great video. Good to know the chain doesn't need to be changed.
cheers chris
What a great video thanks for posting it. As a mechanic myself I've heard of these belts from second hand stories but never seen one in the flesh. Funny thing is I used to work for one of the largest van hire company workshops in the uk and we only every knew about the top belts when we changed them. We just always assumed the rest of the engine ran on a chain!!
lol, same here, it wasn't until a wet belt broke that we realised there is no chain
Thanks for your videos. It's being difficult for me to find if my 2006 focus 1.8tdci has wet belt or chain but thanks to your video now I know that I can check the tensioner bolt and find it myself
Love your videos Alan - always very informative and love your S.O.H. I have a Mondeo Mkk4 1.8tdci. Ford Dealer changed the wet belt. cam belt and water pump at 125K car now done 147K and goes like a train. My Ford dealer (nice family owned firm) told me that the chains break as often as the wet belts so there's no point in going backwards to retro-fit a duplex chain set up. Guess you wouldn't agree.
hi andrew, yes, in all these years i have never heard or had a chain break on one of these engines..we changed the wet belts for chain kits at about 100k miles on all our taxis and sold the cars off at around 400k miles..never had a problem
@@alan4x Thanks Alan. When the time comes to replace the wet belt I will definitely convert to chain.
What did they charge you?
Thanks for the reply Alan. Thought your video was excellent and very informative. There's very little information out there concerning this issue so thank heavens for people like you. I've got a second mk4 mondeo cos I just love the cars. Gonna change that for a chain conversation once I've got this one sorted.
Thanks again mate
Wayne Rowland
Hi thanks for your comment.
Just in case you don't know I have a video on replacing the wet belt
Hi
Lynx diesel series build from 10/2007 onwards the crankshaft timing sprocket which drives the fuel injection pump sprocket by means of a chain drive has been changed to the belt-in-oil system.
Roy how do you know that? If i May ask! Just bought Connect 07 plate and was registered in June 2007, i assume I may a have chain. i have rang lokal dealer they eve didn't know wiat im in about. Today I will call other places. Car has 147000 miles.
Information from Ford Etis
All the common rail versions of the lynx engine have this wet belt, the older rotary pump engine are chain, you can however get a chain conversion kits from most motor factors to replace them now.
failure of the belt WILL result in piston and valve damage, pattern pistons are around £400 a set.
Ford for a long time didn't give service interval for the wet belt simply stating it was a lifetime part, they have now given a service interval.
The new 1 litre ecoboost also has a wet belt so in a couple years they will start suffering.
That's not quite true, the initial TDCi version of the Lynx engine fitted to the early MK2 Focus and MK4 Mondeo ALL had a lower chain. It's only from about 2008 onwards where the lower chain was chain changed to a stupid wet belt on this engine.
@@FatHead1979 or seems only certain models had the chain lower,
The only way to tell is by the type of tensioner fitted, one is domed on the end one is flat.
Nice to see an old video without the noises and bouncing around in front of the camera
Hi Alan, thanks for these informative videos! I have read that ford were doing the chain version of the 1.8 tdci on the very early models? I have Mondeo from early 07 with 155k on the clock. Is there a way of checking without removing the tensioner?
i dont think an 07 plate would have a wet belt but to be sure if you phone your local ford dealer parts department and give them your reg number they should be able to tell you if you have a chain or wet belt
glad my mondeo mk4 is the 2.0 hdi engine not a bad engine so far my last mondeo mk4 clocked over 10000k know still going changed cambelt at 60k just to be safe
I have had vehicles with both chains and belts. I had nothing but problems with chains. Faulty tensioners, guides gone wrong...They cost $2000 to $4000 to replace. When the belt is easy to replace, that's the way to go in my opinion.
thanks. and thanks for the video wish the were more sensible videos like you very helpfull.
Thanks for that, I going to do it next weekend, I've been off the tools about 10 years now so I'm a bit rusty. 👍
@James Saunders it was ok, nothing complicated really. The only issue I had was getting the crank pulley bolt undone. But after that it was all good.
@@colcol172 I watched this video to get the crank pulley undone, the guy is a total nutcase, but actually knows his stuff! it actually worked a treat👍👍ruclips.net/video/7G-adEVjfWI/видео.html
thank you for your video I have found out that the focus 1.8 is chain driven using the tensioner trick in your video thanks again
+Andrew Blackman
thats good, you just saved a heap a money
Ya ford want £487 just for the kit then £850 to strip and fit. I now I could do the job but its the not having tools well the locking pins. I've got the knowledge what rip off
yeah, there will be some cars going to the scrapyard over that job
Just a shame most car companies have started to use these wet belts...
yes bad design
@@alan4x but a cash cow for the dealers replacing all these belts..
very true@@user-zh9kc7tw4n
They're absolute BS
reminds me of the time I told a customer they had one they didn't believe me , and then they where low loaded to the workshop afew weeks later. the certainly new when i found it had snapped and mashed up some valves and made a right mess of the head.
Value engineering at its best - not designed to last longer than four or five years average mileage - and certainly not optimised for maintenance or replacement - bravo Ford - no wonder the Mondeo disappeared.
Great video - just shows how the durability of the engine could have been maximised by the correct timing chain -400,000 miles aint bad for a Ford when looked after.
The top belt was designed for a life of 250k miles. When the top belt was tested there was only 1 failure out of all the many tests just after 250K miles…. So you’re right, the belt can go again for another 125K👍🏼👍🏼
Hi,
Thats what I found out :
Mondeos 1.8 tdci built between (02/2007-02/10/2007) have a chain and belt timing
Mondeos 1.8 tdci built after 02/10/2007 have a belt in oil (instead of chain) and belt timing
In my case it is chain and belt timing. But Ford anyway says it's needed to change chain too ! Its because of posibility that chain tensioner gets broken. Is it really true ? Have anyone heard of this to happen ? Moreover original Ford ETIS online program for me says :
Extended Period Maintenance
Camshaft drive belt Every 125 000 miles/10 years - Renew (LTS 21 304 9)
Auxiliary drive belts Every 125 000 miles/10 years - Renew (LTS 21 567 5)
So it does not tell anything about Fuel pump drive chain. It's contrary to newer fords, where FORD ETIS program shows additional line :
Extended Period Maintenance
Camshaft drive belt Every 125 000 miles/10 years - Renew (LTS 21 304 9)
Fuel pump drive chain/belt Every 125 000 miles/10 years - Renew (LTS 21 304 9 / 21 314 7)
Auxiliary drive belts Every 125 000 miles/10 years - Renew (LTS 21 567 5)
So its a big question to Alan Howatt and others - Have anyone heared of a fuel pump drive CHAIN to fail ?
Yes my cmax 07 chain broke recently
@@SalimKhan-gk1fh what was the mileage on your chain?
@@jzslo hi jan it was 230k Miles, have u had same problem?
@@SalimKhan-gk1fh thankfully not, but I have a 2007 1.8 tdci Focus with 175k miles and was researching if chain needs replacing or not since some say it is for the lifetime of the car. May I ask you which engine oil have you been using and what was the oil change interval since that affects chain stress and wear. And also have you had any fuel pump problems before the chain broke (for example metal shavings in the fuel filter) since the resistance of the not perfectly working fuel pump can also put additional stress on the chain. Thank you very much for you answers and I hope you sort out your car as cheap as possible.
@@jzslo no mine wasn’t a cared fo regularly serviced car, when I got it the oil was virtually like grinding paste! Yes if looked after the chains last forever. I would suggest u use liqui moly ceratec it’s a ceramic treatment for engine internals and virtually eliminates wear! Look it up excellent reviews all my Car’s love it! Whereabouts are you based?
Alan your videos are a pleasure to view. Excellently explained , thank you so very much indeed. I have bought a tourneo connect 2006 with the 1.8 diesel engine fitted. My question is if i take out the timing tension bolt to see whether its a belt or chain will that cause any issues? Thanks in advance.
Great video Alan I've got an s max 1.6 diesel 2012 I've only found out about this wet belt 😳 car always gets serviced on time and anything it needs it gets ill have 2 see if it's a belt or chain 220kms on her 🙈 none of the garages that have done previous servicing mentioned this belt, timing belt and water pump have been done last year
Good video. I heard about that wet belt configuration. It amazed me too. Nice to see it in detail. Why they tried to develop the wheel once again?? But when propely serviced those 1.8 tdci last long. Good engines.
now whatever one expected to find, chain or belt, it doesn't matter the mainrtenace (i.e. replacement) interval is the same in both cases.
All models of car from many manufacturers with the citroen peugeot 1.4 1.6 hdi engines also suffer belt stripping teeth at or below the service interval.
Hi Alan, great informative video, as are all your others. My daughters' 2009, 1.8tdci Focus apparently has the wet belt according to my local Ford dealer. I wondered if you would be interested in doing the chain conversion including water pump, upper belt etc. on this car and if so, could you give a rough idea of cost?
Thanks Alan!
My belt was replaced st 98k and was cracked between the teeth all the way round. Was lucky to get away with it before it snapped. I had used the correct Ford oil since new and it had still deteriorated sooner than the manufacturers life expectancy of 125k.
Wouldn't leave one of these on more than about 80k to be on the safe side.
Hi Alan. Congratulations on your channel. Great videos! I own a Ford Mondeo MK4 Turnier BA7 and 3 weeks ago it just failed to start all of the sudden (no crank). Have you seen cases of the wet belt snapping during start-up (without the driver noticing) that causes the breaking of the camshaft and the seize of the engine (quote of 2'500€)? In your opinion would it make sense replacing the entire engine while doing the conversion to a timing chain?
hi mate, just one more thing i wish to know. where is a timing marks on crank shaft and fuel pump. i can stick crank shaft on TDC, but im worried about fuel pump, because on my ford Mondeo nearly all tooth's are shredded and it damaged pistons. So it means engine lost his timing. Now im struggling to find correct timing marks for fuel pump and fit all new belts. I saw couple guide pictures with 6 mm drill bit locking. but could find locking hole on mine. is it another way?
+Milaur777
there is a ten mil headed bolt on engine block under fuel pump which you take out and then insert the timing pin to set the crankshaft. a plate will slide into the back of the camshaft to set camshaft in position. there is no timing for the fuel pump. it does not need to be timed.
+alan howatt ok, didnt knew that! ford manual showed me to lock the fuel pump.so i was worried about it. thank you very much mate, removed a lot of hassle out of my head.
Hi Alan, thanks a lot for your explanation and experience. Unfortunately I have seen after this your video. I have an Focus C max 2007 KKDA. And I have noted that there is a timing belt (no a chain). Unfortunately, I have already bought the timing belt. In this moment I have disassembled the engine and I'm assembling the same type. The next time will be mounted the chain belt in order to travel more kilometres. Thanks again for your suggestions. Have you some suggestions for the fuel pump? Thanks
Hi, very nice video , very good explained. Unfortunetly i have seen it after the timming belt snapped. now i need to open up the engine and see the damage. can you please link for the parts or Oe codes for this upgrade. Thanks
have you got facebook messenger.. i can send you a photo of part numbers
Hi Alan Great video. Can I get a list of the Part No for the Parts to Convert a Wet Belt to A Chain, Thanks Ian
Thanks Alan I will check it out I might take out the pin and check that
There's confusing issues! If this wet belt snaps the engine stops. This belt has nothing to do with valves and camshafts. Or am I stupidly confused!
the wet belt connects the crankshaft to the high pressure fuel pump..the cam belt then connects from the high pressure fuel pump to the camshaft...if the wet belt snaps the crankshaft will no longer be in synch with the camshaft and the pistons will hit the valves
@@alan4x your knee bone is connected to your thigh bone etc etc. Mine has snapped last night at 100k on my 08 mondeo. Now another one gone to the scrap yard because of a shit design.
Hi Alan, excellent video by the way and I am being a bit cheeky here but was wondering weather you may have experienced a constant leak from the front pulley oil seal despite having used an alignment tool and three different seals including genuine Ford. Your advice will be truly appreciated.
hi, if the timing case is aligned properly and the seal is in position properly it should not leak, however i have had a few seals leak where the case was not aligned right and one other option is a groove can form on the crankshaft pulley where it touches the seal in which case a new pulley is needed, other than that i have had no problems, hope this helps.
one other thing, the seals are not like ordinary seals and the lip that sits around the crank pulley can be bent out of shape easily so when a new seal is fitted flush in the crankcase the pulley has to be fed through the seal very carefully
Alan, thank you very much for your very complete videos. my query is as follows: how many Mi or km it is convenient to change the lower chain or its duration is very long? I admire your work and dedication. Greetings from Argentina
Carlos Hacen
Hi. If you have a wet belt I would replace it at 100k miles although the interval is 125k miles.
If you have a chain fitted the interval is the same BUT if you have oil changes at correct intervals then you should never need to replace the chain... it should outlive the car
Hi Al
Love the channel mate the way you describe things make so much sense.
Just wanted to ask you if I was to replace the high pressure fuel on one these engines do I need to take off the chain or the wet belt meaning do I go trough the complete process that you have gone through in this video or can I just replace the pump?
In the video you say the pump doesn’t time up against anything it’s the wet belt or chain pulley that is timed up against the crank sorry mate if I sound daft.
hi, you would need to remove the upper cam belt...the sprocket covering the pump centre nut then you can remove the pump centre nut and three screws and the pump will slide out....the pump is not timed in any way so it is quite straight forward
Mine has just gone at 100k
Do you service private cars as well? I have difficulty trusting any mechanic up north to do this right :p
Hello Alan,
This a very helpful video and actually explains a lot of rumors I have heard about my 2008 1.8TDCi.
Could you please post the part numbers of the required parts for the conversion.
Also do you recommend sourcing parts from Ford dealership or can you recommend a specific brand to purchase.
My car is 80k miles and is 7 year old. I plan on driving it another 80k. Does it worth to covert to chain in this case?
Happy Holidays!
+Dobromir Tashev
hello, firstly i have had wet belts strip thier teeth at just under 100k and others last more than 140k so it is a gamble but if you are keeping the car for many years to come then best get it done.
i would only use genuine ford parts.
if you search me on Facebook and message me i can then send you a picture message of ford invoice with all the part numbers
Thank you very much for the video... and I have a question. how can I know it is I have a chain where belt on my Ford cmax year 2009 1.8 diesel..
Hi Alan, after all these years do you still consider it worth it to do this conversion? My car has 120k miles on it and I'll probably only keep it for another 100k miles or so but this is due now but I'm leaning more so as just doing the wet belt and timing belt and leaving the conversion. If the car was newer I'd do it but it's only a 2007. I'll do the water pump too.
it is a lot cheaper to do the wet belt replacement than the conversion so as you say, if your not going to keep it forever just change the wet belt for another one
@@alan4x Thanks Alan. Love the channel 👍 entertaining and informative haha, keep up the great work 💯👍
hi Alan did that they were not sure because on the yr my focus is which is on a 07 they told me it could be wet or chain which was not much help.the car is on borrowed time with 123478 on the clock .
Ok. You would think that a company like ford would know lol.
If you unbolt your power steering pump and bracket you will then see the tensioner bolt head for the chain or belt.
Unbolt and remove the tensioner, the video will show you the tensioner and how to tell if your car has a wet belt or chain
Does the 57 plate 1.8 tdci have a chain ive read that they do
Great help thanks, job to do in the van I guess.
Excelent mod!!! There is only one problem, u must have wrong manual from 1.8tdci Ford Focus where was chain up to 2009. Since 2007 Mondeo mk4 had wet belt and must be replaced every 50000m (kit is cheap) there is chain driven CR pump isnt it? Similar problem: Mondeo mk3 2.2TDCI 150bhp and Mondeo mk4 2.2TDCI 175 or 200bhp. First bulet proof chain driven Puma engine, secound french PSA 2.2HDI belt driven engine with chain betwen cam shafts. 2.2TDCI 175bhp single turbo and dry DPF filter 2.2HDI 175bhp twin turbo and wet DPF
Hi Alan,
I have a 1.8 mondeo with 114000 km's (70000 miles) on the counter. But I find that my engine really clatters when accelerating. Not when it's running idle. Can a worn belt like that one described in the video cause this? Or is this just normal behaviour of this diesel engine?
+Wim Comeyne
hi, the wet belt will not cause the engine to clatter. those engines are not very quiet but it should not be clattering, best thing is to have a diesel mechanic take a look at it.
Wim Comeyne Hi, did you ever find out what it was that was making a clattering noise? My mondeo is 09 and has 130k km on the clock and is making the same noise. It is more than likely an injector.
Good video I'm in the process of fitting another engine due to the timing going and destroying the last do you know where you can buy the chain conversion many thanks
please i will want to know if we can change the wet belt of a timing chain in the sump and put a chain in its place for the ford focus 2009. thank you
my wet belt has snapped bent every valve and snapped the top cam in to 3 bits , but i have repaired all this no i have the problem of trying to set up the timing on both belts do you have any idea how to do this , any pointers would be greatly appreciated
Great video! If the cam and crank are locked with the special tools do you then just replace the chain/wet belt? What I'm getting at is can you mess up the timing whilst replacing the chain or does locking cam and crank prevent that? Thanks
Jonathan Corr hello, when you turn the crankshaft clockwise it will but up against the timing pin. with the old belt removed there will be a pin on the crankshaft that the chain sprocket will locate into. as long as the crank sprocket is on that pin correctly you will be ok but it is worth checking from time to time that the crank is still butted up against the timing pin. the crankshaft pulley bolt is really tight and needs a powerful air gun to undo it.
the chain will come out of the box in the correct timing position on its sprockets to fit straight onto the car, hope this helps
Jonathan Corr if what you are saying is do you need to use the timing tools then because the crank sprocket of the chain locates onto a pin on the crankshaft then you could get away without using the tools but i would not advise this as the tools keep the crank and camshaft in the correct position so that the top belt aligns properly
alan howatt Thanks for the info. I was meaning that if all the tools are in place correctly it's hard to mess up the install of the chain, which appears to be what you are saying. Interestingly the Ford dealer here in New Zealand had no idea there were two belts/ belt and chain and the parts guy has never ordered a replacement. It's under extended warranty and hasn't reached the 10 year 125,000 mile interval but it's a job I'll be taking on once the warranty expires.
Jonathan Corr yes, once tools are in correctly you really can't go wrong but once all together then turn engine over two revolutions with a spanner on the crank pulley just to make sure nothing hits lol. good luck
alan howatt Great. Thank you for that.
Allen
That's very interesting I did not know that mate what a lot of work easier to take engine out if u going change to a chain what a pain and cost
Phil in stoke
Can u plz show me ware the time line er gose plz
Hello. I went to Ford dealer and gave him my VIN. HE told me that my car had a wet belt. My car has been built in may 2008. When I change the distribution. It was a chain. I put the wet belt instead of the chain listening to the advice of the person who helped me to do. What are the risks because I didn't change the tensioner so I got a tensioner for chain and now it's a wet belt...
Hi Alan excellent video. My mondeo broke down with the same issue, I was originally expecting to replace my whole engine despite it only having done 70,000 miles. However on stripping engine down it appeared I only had bent valves and a couple of smashed shims ( camshaft was intact suprisingly). My question Alan is, I have obvious damage to the piston heads in the form of half crown indentation marks, Ive dressed the sharp edges off the dents as best I can, do you think this would be ok, the pistons move freely in the bores and appear fine otherwise. ?
A friend of mine seems to think as long as they are not cracked and are moving freely that they should be ok..? Thanks Alan
Wayne Rowland
Hi, yes I have had many cases of valves hitting pistons and leaving dents. The piston crown is pretty thick and I have always left the pistons. Never had a problem so like you say if they move freely and the bores are not damaged then put it back together. Should be ni problem
hello Alan, thanks for doing this video I was about to change just one belt on my s Max, until I found your vid.
I have bought everything needed to do the job.
one question I have is, locktite behind the pump pulley. is the essential and could I use instant gadget instead?
cheers
Yes I normally use the black instant gasket silicone inside the pump pulley

Hi Alan. I'm after some advice on setting the timing on this infamous engine but first thanks for an excellent informative video just wish i had watched it sooner... unfortunately i'm on my 2nd engine the first one went after 80k miles and the replacement engine blew the head gasket soon after being fitted. anyway i decided to repair the engine myself and have had the head tested and skimmed. head and block are back together but try as i might using the correct tools the pistons and valves are hitting each time. is there something i'm missing here? juat to point out I havent touched the wet belt just the cam belt. thanks in advance
hello, well, the first thing is to remove the rocker cover and fit the setting bar in the rear of the camshaft.
the problem you have is that with no crankshaft marks you don't know roughly where the crankshaft is sitting in order to fit the timing pin so it is probably hitting another part of the crankshaft.
without removing the lower crankcase to see where the lower belt marks are you could turn the crankshaft quarter turn at a time to see if the pin will fit and nothing hits or if you removed the injector pump sprocket, ..three ten mill bolts... the sprocket behind that will have a window in it which should sit at six o'clock.... hope this makes sense or maybe just making matters worse lol
+alan howatt thanks alan. will try removing the pump sprocket. i'm at a loss otherwise as i'm sure i've set tdc and inserted the crank locking pin and set the cam up using the flat bar but then again nothing surprises me with this engine.
Hi Allan really great video. A freind of mine & myself have been changing the wet belt but unfortunately I was not there when stripped it down but never mind. I have a problem I cannot figure out how to set the fuel pump side up. the trouble is the hub that fits into the the top pulley on ours does not fit inside so therefore the pulley is not sitting true. I noticed on yours the new pulley has 4 holes for the bolts but the old one only has 3 mine is the same 3 holes on both the new one & the old one. Do you know if there is a difference or what have we done wrong...
Many Thanks
Spencer
+Rhys Armstrong. if you are fitting a new wet belt and pulleys (not a chain kit) the new belt will have lines on the back of the belt which line up with marks on the new crank and pump pulleys. when replacing a wet belt with a new wet belt there is no hub that fits inside the pump pulley. the new wet belt pump pulley should slide straight onto the high pressure pump spindle with just the centre nut to secure it. hope this helps
+alan howatt Many thanks Alan Excellent video & info
Hi Alan what's the relevance of the plastic ring that comes with the new seal? The reason I ask is when i fitted mine I assumed it was only there to keep the shape of the gas get so I removed it before fitting the seal. Engine runs fine but noticed an oil leak from what looks like the fuel pump seal. Should I have fitted the seal with the plastic ring somehow? Thanks Alan
hi, yes the plastic ring slots over the pump sprocket and then you slide the seal along the ring and onto the sprocket so that the seal lip does not get damaged. once the seal is on the sprocket you discard the ring, hope this helps
Booked mine in next week for chain replacemnet etc even tho on 89,000
Hi Alan, Can you please give me the part numbers required to perform this job, I am looking to purchase a Mondeo 1.8 TDCI with 90000 on the clock, should I look elsewhere seeing the cost of this job.
Many thanks.
Alan, first of all thank you for the uploaded video. I have a question with the tensor. I'm going to change the lubricated belt tomorrow for a new one,
Do I have to put a new tensioner?
Or I can use the one I already have. I realized that I bought the kit that I bought only the lubricated belt comes but the tensioner does not come.
Greetings and thank you.
hi, if you are changing the wet belt for another wet belt then you can use the old tensioner
Thanks !!! :)
Hello mate, any chance of the genuine part numbers for this conversion? Many thanks
Hi mate any idea what the bolt sizes for the adapter sprocket are as I've redirected a kit with the bolts missing. the company I bought the kit from state there out of stock at the moment and don't know when they'll have any. Was hoping to source the 4 bolts elsewhere but can't seem to find any info on the bolt sizes. Cheers Alan
hi, if you mean the four bolts that secure the hub inside the pump end of the chain conversion kit then they are torx 40 bits.... you can get them from a ford dealer or i sure i have some.. if you want them from me just contact me on facebook messenger and i will get your address and send you some
Thanks for the reply Alan, I've been on the phone to Lymme engine components who I bought the kit off and they've assured me they can get some out to me next week. If I have any issues I'll be in touch if that's ok. Really appreciate your offer and feedback. 👍👍
Hi Alan sorry to be a pain again but the kit I bought doesn't come with the chain and sprockets already made up. I understand from your video that I need to line up the pin for the crankshaft sprocket but do I need to put the fuel injection pump on in a certain way as my understanding is that these don't need to be timed up?
Thank you
Wayne Rowland
Hi. I have another video where I fit a wet belt.
Technically the pump end does not need to be lined up but it should be as there are reference dots on the pump toothed sprocket that the top cam belt fits onto and the pump seal cover.
If you get me on Facebook using my name I can send you pictures
Is it actually true that the Italians created the wet timing belt?
hi Alan, we have 2009 S MAX in our workshop with the belt broken. I guess this is a bend valves job aswell as damage to bottom end. Would it be possible to get a used engine to go in it...what about coding of pump and injectors etc...
Hello. I am not familiar with the ford smax but if it has the 1.8tdci engine with the wet belt you can replace the engine or remove head and see if it is only valve and valve guide damage.
The high pressure pump is not timed but the new wet belt cassette will fit in one position so that the pump pulley will only sit in one position.
The injectors in that engine do not need coding in any way nor does the pump.
Hope this helps. Any other questions just let me know.
hi Alan
There can i buy the 4 little torx and hub for the chaming chain
Great video. So if the wet belt was stripped and. I compression is it worth doing too end rebuild or new engine time from your experience? Cheers
if you were able to get a cheap enough used engine, it would be quicker to get the job done but cheaper to rebuild original engine, but take longer...either way it would not be cheap and chances are you could buy another car with a years test on it for the same price or cheaper
alan howatt thanks for the reply. The car was next to nothing because of problem no compression. Might just do a top end rebuild can take my time. Even with a used engine I would want to do the chain conversion so there's cost there on top of the engine. I'm hoping the cams are OK heard they can get mashed? Cheers.
I'm doing an engine rebuild on ford connect .
What a job !!
Stupid chains and belts linked up to different sprockets !! Why can't they run a belt- cam -fuel pump - tensioner and crank ..
I already feel like not going to work tomorrow coz of that !!
Very demoralising!!
I wonder how much the customer is paying to get the job done .
it would have been a lot easier.
this way makes for so much more unnecessary work, good luck.
Our 'wet belt' has just recently gone. Engine is knackered. Our Mondeo 2008 1.8 TDCI is 7yrs old with 75k on the clock. Absolutely fuming and gutted.
+Katie Kelly really sorry to hear this, what is also hard is the fact that you don't know there is a belt there till its too late and most garages servicing these cars don't know either.
all you can do now is weigh up the price of a used engine against the cost of just replacing the car
+alan howatt thanks Alan. It is very frustrating indeed and I'm not getting anywhere with Ford! I've spoken to several mechanics, online forums and even the ford main dealer in my town and no one knew about this belt!!!! It's been so stressful and made worse that we're still paying the car off! :(
+Katie Kelly If you have no warranty left on your car then you are left to foot the bill. i will say that if you had of known about this belt before it broke taking into account that it would have cost around about £1000 to replace it, would you have changed it as you can pick up a car for the same money with tax and mot.
if i were in your situation, i would get another car and strip your car and sell all the parts on ebay, which if done right will get your money back, one door = 100-200 quid and so on, hope this helps
+alan howatt I feel like I need to try my luck with Ford. From people's similar experience online, they won't help but I'm still angry and it's only just happened so they're on my hit list lol!
Sounds silly but sentimentally, I don't think I could watch her being stripped for parts so how much do you think we could realistically get for her as she is at the moment? In great condition expect the little part about it needing a new engine? I know it's worth about £3000 in full working order. Any more help is much appreciated! Thanks :)
+Katie Kelly lol... come on you would be lucky to get £500 as it is, don't be sentimental, you paid your hard earned money for that car and by whatever means nevessary you need to get as much back as you can.
apart from doing an insurance job on it the only other option is to repair it, and if you get a quote for the repair it would be quicker and easier to buy another car for the same money
hello, maybe you can make a video with the steps to timing the engine and mount the belt timing or the chain timing, i have a focus 2009 i.8 tdci with 210k and i want to change it...i receive a very large pay offer from the dealership....
You mean "quote" not "offer" from the dealer lol
where can i buy chain kit conversion ? in my ford dealer (spain) only gave me the option of wet timing belt ....
thanks¡
Here is me 2020 one motor ~130 000 km and starter turns like Champion ;)
i'am Gates tech partner, so what interest me is how loss is that wet belt tensioner or how they did count in the oil between the pully and the belt ?
.......to not make it go bang sooner?
ps. i always think that, this was Hitlers and not Italy's design as this was last "fords engine on Diesel before PSA here in Fords
Thanks. I have high mileage 2008 2 litre diesel Mondeo and I've been thinking it's solid car. Now looking to get another one for lady I was looking also into 1.8 models and out of 10 I think I've seen maybe 4 older cars with complete engine replacement in sale and was wondering what the fuck is wrong in them. This clears things _alot_
Anyone know if ford swapped to a chain for the 2012 2.0 diesel mondeo??
that is a different engine with a belt and a chain
Thanks for the quick reply that item number doesn't work?
+Andrew Hoggart
on ebay if you type in ... ford mondeo 1.8tdci timing tools it should come up
Hey. I need to check my tensioner to make sute i have a chain. Do i need to remove the belt that drives the power steering pump or can i just loosen the pump and put it aside with the belt still on? Anyone know a video where this procedure is done?
You screw an m8 bolt into the tensioner to release the tension on the belt.
Hi Alan, Great video! I have a 2008 1.8 Mondeo in the workshop at the minute which ive been asked to replace these belts/chain. My tech info is telling me to remove the injectors and cylinder head to carry out the job?? Is this correct? Thanks in advance
+dan horne
no you do not remove the cylinder head or injectors.
you will need crankshaft timing pin and camshaft locking plate plus timing cover oil seal aligning tool.
the average time to do this job if you knew exactly how to do it should take 3-4 hours.
+alan howatt thank you for replying. I did wonder if the data was correct. I couldn't see why you would need to do this but It must be an error in the software. Not good considering the subscription costs. Ive got the timing kit on order and especially the aligning tool, as per your advice in video. Bit of info aswell, ive done some research and from what I can gather ford changed the replacement interval for the chain version from 125000 miles to not specifying one. The valve timing belt stays the same at 125000 and the wet belt also stays the same at 125000. I'm assuming because the chain should be trouble free for the life of the vehicle (maintenance and care dependant) Thank you again
+dan horne
thats right, when you see the chain and tensioner setup, for a short double chain it should last 500k no problem.
i have had mondeos doing over 300k on chains no problem and still going strong.
what sort of damage is expected when belt fails?. are we talking bent valves or holes in pistons and bent rods?
Ian Marshall
Yes , bent valves and valve guides, broken camshaft etc
20years in the motor trade and i no manufacturas make things to break so they can sell replacements but this one takes the piss, good video dude, well lit clear audio but maybe cut to the chase from the word go cos people watching this are usually need deep in a job and just want to see what they cant see( upside down on there driveway in the dark) no offence ment m8
hello, yes i did a wet belt replacement vid for those that want to do the job,,,,,ruclips.net/video/-l6-JUImJQw/видео.html
Hi Alan, I own a diesel Transit connect 2003. I assume the Endura DI engine has a lower timing fuel pump chain rather than a belt? I am about to change the cam belt. Do I need to worry about the lower belt? Thanks
if you contact your local ford dealer parts department and give them your reg number they should be able to tell if you have a chain or belt fitted, if you have a chain then don't worry, if you have a belt then have it replaced
Thanks for the swift reply! I will approach my local Ford dealer for the relevant information. My previous van was a Ford Escort with the same Endura engine. That Endura TDDI engine did over 200,000 miles with the usual, regular upkeep. Sadly the old faithful fell apart from around the engine and box. I hope the connect engine will be as good. PS. Great informative videos. "Belting viewing"
Hello my friend! I think the Ford Mondeo 1.8 engine and the Ford S-Max 1.8 2006 engine share the same parts?
Abdurrahman Ibrahim Ali
Hi, i am Not familiar with the smax but if they are both the 1.8 tdci lynx engines then they will certainly have the same timing belts fitted
Ford is still using wet timing belts on the 1.0 Ecoboost engine. Same issues with wrong oil or overdue service...
Hello Alan, can i use a flat end tensioner on a chain conversion kit?
i have received my chain conversion kit with flat end tensioner, as on your videos you say
it have to be doomed end. So is there a big deal of the difference ?
hi...if you have purchased an aftermarket chain kit i do not know if the tensioner end is flat or domed but for genuine ford parts its is a domed end for a reason..i would phone who you got the parts off and question it or go to you tube channel ... badgertronix ...he has fitted an aftermarket chain conversion kit and made a video on changing it so he will know what tensioner he used
@@alan4x thank you
Hi can you tell me if you need to remove the cambelt to replace the injector pump new chain, as the cambelt has already been done. Cheers steve
+Stephen Barnes
yes it all has to come off again
Thanks Alan much appreciated cheers.
Hi Ian, I've recently bought a 2007 1.8 tdci that's just hit 110,000. It has a mostly ford service history. What oil do you recommend to service these carsHuge thanks
Hi, it is a 5w/30 but if you phone your ford dealer or aftermarket parts supplier they will know what specific oil grade to sell you
thanks Ian, ive always used fords oil or castrol fully synthetic
top video m8 same me pall never seen this 2 weeks ago his snapped
Michael Busby bummer, trouble is it will cost not far off a grand to fit a chain at a garage unless you have a mate who can fit it cheap, and if the belt does break, which it has for your mate, a used engine will be about the same
i ano m8 was guna have a go but getting quates from 600 to 1200 for a engine
i'm a victim of 1 of these belts(2009 connect) that went on the m65. new (used) engine. wet belt was 130 just to buy. spent a fortune in the end (way way over 1000pound)and now have black smoke pooring out the back. any thoughts anyone on the smoke would be appreciated. ive blanked egr and cant find any splits in any pipes. thanks in advance

Thanks for the info
Hey guys! I have a question: my mondeo mk4 2l 130 hp/2007 AZBA engine code have 1 wet timing belt and 1 normal timing belt, or have just the normal timing belt without any distribution belt?
if you have a 2 litre engine.. it will be a peugeot engine with one cam belt...the wet belt is only on 1.8tdci engines
My wet belt was done at 89tho I’ve just found out it’s now done 98tho it’s time to change I reckon
hola , mi nombre es Pablo soy de Argentina y tengo un ford focus 2010 tdci motor duratorq 1.8 , donde podría comprar este reemplazo ??Saludos !!
My 1.8tdci 2009 has done 50k full ford service history.Do you think this conversion needs doing. You should do other peoples cars you could make money. Were you based you could do mine ta
i guess many of us are here because we have a tdci that has a destroyed engine due to the wet belt failure. Must admit, i thought these were all chain on the crank.
could you tell me if a ford focus 1.8 tdci has a chain or wetbelt
+Andrew Blackman
the best thing you can do is give your registration number to your ford parts dealer and they may be able to tell you if you have a chain or wet belt in your lower crankcase
Hi. Good Video.
