Absolutely loving Drew’s face and personality when the Brown bear puts in an appearance. More adults should have and show joyful experiences like this !! 🐻
My 6 and 9 year old love watching you guys and have a few fountain pens of their own. We have watched the puzzle chapter a few times now because they are obsessed with the faces Drew is making.
First of all, thank you both for making a wonderful pencast for your fans despite your tight schedule. I am on emergency duty at the moment; when there are breaks between patients, I enjoy the show. But: When Brian described his preferred pizza topping, I started to feel a bit sickly (my pizza choice: pineapple? nonono! anchovies? jajaja!). Then Brian came up with the fun fact - even though I already knew the fact - and I was suddenly happy to have access to 18,000 packs of medicine, some of them anti-nausea.... Turkey Hammock and Winky from the pharmacy!
“Don’t bring fruit into my meat zone” had me cackling hysterically after a stressful day so thanks for that and Drew is 100 percent right. Some sweet/salty combinations work-I love dark chocolate bars with flecks of bacon-but pineapple on pizza is too much cognitive dissonance for me to handle.
Hooded nib is still quite a romanticized thing in the Chinese fountain pen culture, just because brands like Hero were so dominant at one point. Even though Hero has fallen behind in the industry (I would say), it still holds an important space in the culture, and many people still buy pens like the Hero 100. In that sense there is really no "good reason" for hooded nibs to still hold such a place in China. But because they were a sign of a Chinese company being able to make a pen as well as the Americans, they are still held up as this cultural symbol.
Thanks so much for prerecording these so there is a Pencast on your weeks off! I love the diversity of humanity -- watching Brian's sheer excitement and enthusiasm talking about the cubes, coupled with simultaneously watching Drew's brain melt, then reconsititute in appeciation of Brian's happiness, and then explode when another complicated cube came up, made my day. I've lived in humid, and mostly temperate places throughout my life, but yes, TWSBI and Platinum have great seals. I'd add that Opus 88 does, too. I've had bad luck personally with the seals on snap cap Pilot models, but that may just be me. And yeah, Private Reserve Infinity ink is amazing. I don't know about hot, dry environments, but in hot, humid environments, it does what it claims. Is bathtub saliva the new turkey hammock? Because it was hilarious, but I don't think it would make a great sticker.
I'm sure Drew realized he was walking into this as soon as he said it, but if Drew were to pare down to his favorite three pens... what would they be? And how many of the three are TWSBI Swipes?
I have the Peter Pen v2 from Narwhal. Living in Denver, I've not used it in multiple months and it still writes immediately upon use. I've been impressed at it not drying out despite the climate
Nah. I like hooded nibs a lot. To me it's the feel on paper and in the hand that counts, and nothing beats a juicy fine nib and lack of a step on the grip. Companies should really make more of them, the simplicity of the nib/grip design opens up opportunities to be creative with the rest of the pen body. I have 2 51As and that .38 nib is among my favorites, easily comparable to my VP in F.
Thanks for the video guys! I found the Sailor Nekoyanagi to be awesome in the Kaweco Sport mermaid pen with a broad nib. Like writing with mermaid potion oil on glass and so beautiful to watch it change appearance as it dries. Can’t remember the actual color name but I bet ya’ll know which one I’m referring to. 😃
WOW! Imagine my astonishment just now when I saw my Q about dry climate was on the Pencast! Y A Y! Thank you Drew (Brian, too and BTW, apéritif is a pear a teef 😁 and THX is thanks.) The tiny little glass I was using is almost exactly the shape/size of your Ink Miser, but heavier (cause it's glass.) Drew makes it so obvious that capping is king in any climate, but especially DRY. My old beloved Monteverde Olympia (saved by heat-setting twice) is less than tightly capped these days. But ALL my Pilot pens are perfect. Thank you again for responding. Fan for life...
Drew’s stress during the puzzle section…..I was right there with him! The colors are pretty, but the sudoku and minx puzzles were just stressful to think about. Honestly I know they are for someone….but that someone is NOT me! Brian - you are a trooper for playing with the puzzles and enjoying it!
Pineapple on pizza: I've always been ambivalent on this; Hawaiian pizza is OK but not great. But this summer while I was doing a cross country motorcycle road trip, we stopped in at Powder River Pizza in Sheridan WY. I had the Main Street, which has pepperoni, sausage, jalapenos and pineapple. It. Was. Amazing! The spiciness from the jalapenos, the smokiness of the sausage, contrasted with the sweet tang of the pineapple, it all just worked SO WELL together. It's genuinely in the running for the best pizza I've EVER had.
i never thought brian goulet of all people would have to be canceled, but then i heard what his favorite pizza is and we have to choice. he's a monster.
I usually hate sweet + savory (get out of here with chocolate-covered pretzels and salted caramel). But pineapple on pizza is great to me. And Brian's dream pizza sounds DELICIOUS.
Love the weekly podcasts, so entertaining as I work from home. I find myself constantly clicking over to your page to add something to my wish list. I finally purchased the 823 in Amber last week and it is beautiful. Now I’m going to wait a couple of weeks and get the Smoke in fine nib. These are my grail, my holy grail will be a Pelikan 605 in blue-my favorite color as well-which seems to be the hardest to find. Do you plan to get in any new Pelikan’s in 605 or 805 in blue?🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
1) BBQ chicken pizza is amazing. BBQ sauce, chicken, and red onion. No pineapple. You should try it, Drew. 2) Cupcakes and cookies are usually both small enough that there is no reason to choose. Life is short, have both!
Love the pencast! You should add a currently inked section (maybe ask other goulet pens employees as well), always looking for inspiration for new inks! 💙
Just to let you know, i lay back on the balcony, enjoying the end of the day with my sushi Friday and you guys. It's the perfect ending for the work week. (I'd never do chores listening to you too 😁)
Drew's face at the Lamy Brown = Brian's face at the bacon pineapple bbq sauce pizza 😂 I really really loved this episode! Hope you two are enjoying a well-deserved break
I sympathize with Drew about many sheening inks being higher maintenance in various regards. Quite frankly, some are quite dry in terms of flow. But there are some surprises, like Diamine Polar Glow that bring on the sheen while being pretty well-behaved. It's nice enough to be in my regular ink rotation. So here's a question--what are some other well-behaved sheening inks?
I found the history of the hooded nibs was a super interesting topic in this pencast! Thank you for incorporating that :) I love my Parker 51s (vintage and modern), I think the hooded nib is just so elegant and subtle, and I love how they write. I wish more brands made hooded nibs.
Well, they write the same as any other nib. I just hate hiding the most beautiful part of the pen, which, to me, is nice gold nib. Why buy gold and then hide it it under a hood that's a pain in the rear to disassemble?
Regarding your questions about ink in arid environments, I also recommend storing your inked pens in a horizontal position, preferably in a pen box or case, particularly if you ink up more than three (Drew!). Putting them in some kind of case helps slow the evaporative process. Also, consider choosing more lubricated inks (i.e. Sailor). The surfactant or lubricant used seems to also slow the evaporative process. One last suggestion - during times of heat and low humidity, consider using a wider nib.
Very interested in this multishading inks. the only I owe is Nekoyanagi and is awesome. High quality anchovies, like Santoña (Cantabria, Spain) or l'Escala (Catalunya, Spain) ones are not so salty and are delicious
I have been wanting a hooded nib because I think that it looks more subtle when I am writing in a place where I don’t want to draw attention to the fact that I’m using a fountain pen. I have not taken the plunge yet, though, because I am fairly new to fountain pens and am intimidated by the fact that it looks more complicated to clean and I don’t have any experience with vintage pens.
Exactly my thought! I agree that not drawing attention is perhaps the best reason for using a hooded nib these days. I don't have a fully-hooded nib such as that in Parker 51 pens, but I feel that the semi-hooded nib in the Lamy 2000 (and its general design) work well in this sense, so this is what I'm using when I don't want to draw attention. And the Lamy 2000 is definitely not a hard pen to clean, you may want to give it a try.
Re ;- Anchovies on pizza. Works great if you put them on immediately after the sauce, before any cheese or toppings. They melt into the sauce, giving a nice zing of salt & umami. Terrible if you put them on above the cheese as a topping.
Hey Brian you mentioned having an old Sheaffer. I recently found a pen which was my fathers, he passed away when I was 21 and that was 32 years ago, so I’m interested in finding out more about this pen. I’ve done some superficial searching but can’t seem to find out much - do you have any suggestions as to where I can look? P.S. BBQ pizza is THE BEST!! With steak and onion - OMG! Also, pineapple on pizza is tasty - not my fav but… it works.
Hooded nibs are fun. I have an aerometric Parker 51, an Aurora 88P (more semi-hooded), a Pelikan P1, and of course a Lamy 2000. All smooth, wet writers, and all a joy to use.
At first, I didn't care for hooded nibs because I like the look and shape of "normal" fountain pen nibs, but I am a Parker fangirl (for rather silly and sentimental reasons), and you can't say you like Parker pens and NOT own at least one Parker 51! I picked up several on ebay for under $50 with gold nibs, and they write beautifully! I also really like Aurora pens and picked up a DuoCart from your bottom shelf, and I love that modern hooded nib, too! I am easy to please, though, because my pen collection has a little of everything because I just have to try everything and every brand!
On a more serious note, one thing that always concerns us fountain pen folks is the possibility of an uncapped pen falling onto a floor and damaging the nib. It seems to me that a movable hood that completely covers the nib yet retracts somewhat for writing could solve this problem. Any ideas or comments?
Another great pencast. Sooooo thankful that I reached Turkey Hammock status again JUST before the saliva 'fun' fact 🤮... Way to clear the room/'zoom' , Brian 😅😅😅
Once upon a time, Sailor, Platinum, and Pilot all made TONS of hooded nib pens, in both full size and pocket size. Some of the small pocket size ones are tin works of art (14k nibs, lovely floral designs, etc). Really annoying to clean though.
Catching up on this one, and as Brian describes how he's kept all the prototypes and limited editions, I can't help thinking you dudes should look into displaying them somewhere in the office, possibly near the lobby for anyone who should visit. Goulet Pen Museum?
I have a question for y’all! I’m not new to the fountain pen community, but I’m still not sure what the purpose of getting your nib ground is. Is it only to make it flow more smooth? You guys have mentioned vintage grinds in the past and I would love to start getting into vintage pens as well and would like some examples of those if that is a regular thing that nib meisters do! (Also turkey hammock)
It could be as simple as changing your mind on which size you want (obviously you can't make it larger, but you could go smaller). Other times, getting your nib tuned and smoothed your your preference can give it a "custom" feel that's just for you. - Drew
Brian: I just happen to have a rotisserie chicken and a pineapple on hand. Your pizza is on my menu for tonight! (sorry Drew!) Thinking back to the Rubik craze of the '80s...you can put some Vaseline (just a dab) on the inner faces to slick up a tight cube. Give it a try on that soccer-ball sized tight monster you have. It's going to take you a while on that one to work it in on all sliding surfaces, but it'll stop the 'creaking' when you turn and slicken (is that a word?) it up.
Anchovies and pineapple with pepperoni delicious. BTW did you miss an opportunity to answer the evaporation question by suggesting using a "hooded nib'' pen? I thought you go directly there given the earlier discussion.
Talking about humidity, maybe Brian needs to move to the desert to prevent saturation of clothing when working hard. Those puzzles are interestingly crazy, Brian. Good pencast guys. BLESSINGS
@@Gouletpens PS - I’m with you, Drew, on the pineapple and BBQ sauce “pizza”. 🤢 I am certain no Italian here in the States or in Italy would say that thing is “just like Mama used to make!”
So I have the Sailor Ha Ha ink, and I find it too light for my eyes. This is using a medium nib VP. Would I do better to try it in a broad? Or is it just me and it is too light for me? I want to use it and love it, but I can’t see it!
Wow, Drew really flashed his gold-level nerd card in this episode. Immediately recalling Dark Helmet's name, the Sith reference in an analogy.... nice! If he'd made a comparison to swabbed Tomoe River paper barrel curling like the dunes of Arrakis, it'd have been a hat trick!
I have a fun question for the spooky season coming up. Since Virginia is supposed to be on the top 10 haunted states in the US - Have you or anyone on the Goulet team every experienced something supernatural (maybe even at the company headquarters)? (I'd love it if people shared spooky stories for fun in the comments too 👻)
One time (this was when I was living alone in my first apartment), I had started putting away some groceries that I had just brought home and I turned around after smelling a weird smell - only to find that the egg carton I had on my counter had leaked or burst open...but the super freaky thing was that the eggs that had burst onto the countertop had legit begun to COOK THEMSELVES. Like they were on the griddle. I never touched the counter to see if the surface was hot - because right after I noticed the eggs, I heard a noise that sounded like it was coming from my refrigerator. I slowly walked over to it (despite my better judgment) and cracked it open. The light seemed WAAAY brighter than normal, and the air coming out wasn't cold. Just when I though I saw an image of some sort of temple or gate or something super trippy like that, a horrifying dog-like monster thing showed up right in my face and roared something that sounded like "zuul". Obviously at that point I was good and terrified. Slammed the door and ran out. There was also an issue with some pink stuff coming out of my bathtub, but I'll save that story for another day. - Drew. ;)
Had to stop the video to say this: I have just listened to a report that Domino‘s has closed its operations in Italy. The company could not make a go of it there because they put things on pizzas that in the view of the Italians did not belong. Specifically mentioned: pineapple! Drew‘s opinion is confirmed by the true pizza lovers.
They should do scientific studies on Brian’s brain! The only thing I seem to enjoy that everyone hates is Minesweeper and now I feel like playing it. I gave up on Rubik’s a long time ago.
I saw a young guy on a video who solved three rubik cubes at once while juggling them! I didn't know that was even humanly possible--let alone a thing. I have never seen such complex puzzles as you own, Brian. My face looked like Drew's--LOL!
*gasp* considering how much you all love the pilot E95s. I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned under hooded nibs. Maybe it doesn't count as even semi hooded?
Brian, strictly speaking the Parker 51's feed has no fins at all. It's a tiny rod of ebonite that runs inside the tubular nib. The fins are a separate piece that encloses both, called the ink collector. Ink travels from the reservoir to the collector, down the feed's channel, to the nib slit. Interestingly, Parker wasn't the only company experimenting with this in late '30s. Sheaffer's Triumph nib works in such a similar way Parker sued them for patent infringement in the early '40s (Parker patented the 51 in 1939), won, and forced Sheaffer to pay royalties for it.
Didn’t go through all the comments (forgive me if this has already been said), but in a very dry climate where ink evaporation is more noticeable, maybe keeping pens in a ziplock bag could slow that process. Not a visually appealing solution, but maybe this is a niche product just waiting to be developed. 😊
Drew's face during the puzzles section tells stories all it's own.
This is exactly what I was going to say! I feel exactly like that about these!
Lol agree...some of his reactions were priceless especially when he said put it back...hahahahah
Omg I was laughing so hard! And feeling exactly the same thing!
I was feeling that pain too-- should have skipped to the next time stamp but I was too horrified to look away 😰
Yup love seeing his horror face when Brian shows the puzzles. Last video were like that as well.

I am crushing on Drew’s shirt
BraveStarr!!!
You must be a personal of fine taste, then. Cheers! - Drew
Loved this episode but darn, I finished the whole thing and it’s only Sunday night 😅
We'll be back to full strength next episode - and with a special guest! - Drew
Just solved a Windmill cube last night, never solved a cube before so it was pretty rewarding.
(sorry Drew!)
Thinking back to the Rubik craze of the '80s...you can put some Vaseline (just a dab) on the inner faces to slick up a tight cube.
BLESSINGS
What is a good journaling ink - some suggestion ?
Question for future pencast - if price were not a factor, where would you rank the Mont Blanc 149 among other fountain pens?
I think it's time for an updated Brian Goulet collection
I think its time for a Brain and Rachel collection :) and a TWSBI highlight too
This episode grossed Drew out quite a lot!!! Love you guys!!!!
Haha yeah I didn't expect that! Thanks for joining us! - Drew
@@Gouletpens I hope you and all the Goulet peeps have a marvelous weekend!! 😃
@@Gouletpens PS - I’m with you, Drew, on the pineapple and BBQ sauce “pizza”. 🤢 I am certain no Italian here in the States or in Italy would say that thing is “just like Mama used to make!”
@@EdoDoe613 LOL I highly doubt that! - Drew
Can someone tell where I can learn about the 823 pilot custom in fine. Everyone just loves the medium and broad on these sort of pens
Yes Brian!!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️😊BBQ sauce, pineapple, onion, & banana peppers, is my favorite vegetarian pizza combo!!
So I have the Sailor Ha Ha ink, and I find it too light for my eyes. This is using a medium nib VP. Would I do better to try it in a broad? Or is it just me and it is too light for me? I want to use it and love it, but I can’t see it!
Great show guys!
We still have metro diner here in Raleigh
But you also have Big Ed's! I've only been once, but would love to go back! - Drew
- Drew. ;)
@@Gouletpens 😄
Would y'all consider selling the Jinhao X159? Its a new pen with a #8 steel nib! For less than $10! Crazy stuff.
put them in stock. They are such an improvement over the original.
I’m surprised no one made a meme page specifically about the pencast
They should do scientific studies on Brian’s brain! The only thing I seem to enjoy that everyone hates is Minesweeper and now I feel like playing it. I gave up on Rubik’s a long time ago.
I saw a young guy on a video who solved three rubik cubes at once while juggling them! I didn't know that was even humanly possible--let alone a thing. I have never seen such complex puzzles as you own, Brian. My face looked like Drew's--LOL!
Is the vanishing pen considered hooded?
Brian or someone else, could u say what kind of art do u have in the background? How is this art or similar called.
*gasp* considering how much you all love the pilot E95s. I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned under hooded nibs. Maybe it doesn't count as even semi hooded?
I know this is a pen chanel, but can I ask what nice watch Drew is wearing?
That's my Delorean Alpha! - Drew
How many pens does Drew have? I figured he’d be in the running for the penultimate pen collection.
Cookies. Peanut butter cookies with butterscotch chips. It's amazing.
Pineapple and Anchovy pizza (olive oil base) is great!
For the love of God can we please see Brian solve a rubix cube next pencast? I can't be the only one that would want to see that haha
Brian’s brain is brilliant
What watch is Drew wearing? I like it
That's my Delorean Alpha! - Drew
@@Gouletpens Thanks! Looks good!
Hey Brian, do you watch jperm, cubehead and tingman ?
Drew looks like he is in actual physical pain at 33:19. lol
Didn’t go through all the comments (forgive me if this has already been said), but in a very dry climate where ink evaporation is more noticeable, maybe keeping pens in a ziplock bag could slow that process. Not a visually appealing solution, but maybe this is a niche product just waiting to be developed. 😊
You can make a hooded-nib for a #6 nib by making the pen look like a PEZ dispenser !
Ohhhhh i got the visual
For a different kind of puzzle, check out maze balls!
Drew's horror really elevated the puzzle section.
