Useful hint regarding converters / cartridge popping off. I have a KaWeCo brass sport where I have a problem with cheap cartridges popping off. Now I want to try Tanzanite. Also, DeAtramentis black red (or is it red black) is totally underrated. Gorgeous color. Alexander Hamilton lives in my burgundy/champagne Pilot E95S.
Pen Butler: I'd go for the pen-cleaning version. Once all the nibs on my current pens were customized (which would be fantastic), the butler wouldn't have much to do until I bought a new pen, even with me changing my mind on existing grinds. I like to change inks and pens often, usually barely filling pens to not waste ink. I could give a pen-cleaning butler daily work.
I love and always giggle when Drew inserts Brian’s name into his responses to Brian 😂🙃😁🤭 “You know what I hate about it, Brian,” “Were you looking for faux pas, Brian?” “I actually dug out ye olde white linen shirt, Brian.” It reminds me of Stewie Griffin talking to Brian Griffin on Family Guy and brings me joy 😂
I'm still a big fan of my TWSBI inkwell with its inner plastic cup. I don't even own a TWSBI pen, so I removed the snorkel section and simply use the top cap. Classy looking and hugely practical.
Great to hear about your success at the library Drew. I need to check out mine. If you like audiobooks, check out if your library uses Libby. You download the book and the library takes it back automatically on its due date. Love the saw Brian.
Speaking of converters, my con 70 when it was basically empty the pen started leaking ink into the cap. As long as there is ink in the converter its fine but when it gets very low the pen tends to leak. So every pen I have that can take cartridge/converter now all have cartridges. I am just going to clean and reuse cartridges from here on out (And a pack of cartridges tend to be cheaper than converters anyway especially proprietary ones.(I'm looking at you Lamy, Platinum.) )I have ditched all converters (ANGRY FIST). lol
Yay! I'm glad you liked my hypothetical! I definitely put on my Brian cap to try to head off all the clarifying questions lol. I'm super surprised and pleased that Drew was the one who didn't immediately have an answer. I was thinking of his complaints when I specified that they would get EVERY nook and cranny. Since I didn't answer the question myself before, I think I would go with the nib meister. Cleaning pens isn't my favorite chore, abut I'm also very much not picky about how clean it gets so it doesn't take all that long. I would get more day-to-day use out of the cleaner, but the idea of having every pen I owned absolutely perfectly tuned and be able to get recreations of the illusive vintage "wet noodle" style flex pen is too tempting to pass on. I do a Brian and leave pens to pile up before washing all in one go, but if I have a sparkly green in my wet noodle pen and I want a chromoshader, I can just have one of my clean pens ground to a wet noodle as well. Speaking of audiobooks from the library: have you checked the digital resources for your library? Most will have Libby and some will have Hoopla. It's easier than getting 28 CDs lol. Each library has different resources to allocate towards its digital catalog so your selection, waitlists, and borrow limits may vary. But also check out the reciprocal programs in your area as well. Some states will have a state-wide digital collection as well as the municipal, and some libraries will allow you to get a digital card if you work in their zone but don't live in their zone. Some nearby library systems will allow residents from neighboring zones to get a digital card. And of course, there are library systems like the Brooklyn library that let non-residents pay an annual fee to access their digital catalog. Libby makes it really easy to add cards from multiple different libraries and to not just switch between libraries easily but to also see the wait times for a specific book across all your cards and chose which library system to place a hold/borrow through.
I agree with Drew's comment regarding the converter the comes with the Monteverde Ritma - I had problems with leaking (at the nipple) and loose fit. I replaced it with a Schmidt converter... problem solved!
I think that from a merely practical point the classic Sheaffer ink bottles with the separation and the Pelikan 4001 bottles are the best ones for filling your pen and using up the last drops of ink.
Love learning through the pencast as a newbie finding my way. Question: How do you store your pens? Original packaging or pen storage system? By company? Color of pens? Pen feature such as type or size of nib, steel vs gold nib, piston vs eyedropper? Or just in a box randomly so when you grab a pen it will be a surprise? How about accessories such as converters and cartridges? Thanks in advance for your answer.
Not to spur retail competition, but Birmingham Pen Company's Ironsides and resin pens are what I think of for pens with colored nibs. Hongdian also has the blue forest pen with a blue nib.
Yeah, I'm not sure those Esterbrooks are the best measure of interest in colored nibs generally; they are definitely BOLD colors! Black and other stealth nibs seem to be popular, and Birmingham's metal Ironsides with muted colors for nib and clip are likely to appeal to people that don't like the Esterbrooks.
Oh my gosh, Drew's Sean Connery impression was awesome and brought the biggest smile to my face. I just saw Last Crusade in the theater a few weeks ago (a local movie house was doing a throwback series so we watched the first three Indiana Jones movies on the big screen) and it was such a great experience. What pen/ink combo do you think Henry Jones would use for his notebook (IF you HAD to choose a combo for him)?
"I shuddenly remembered my Charlemagne" Haha! Let's see. Henry's pretty stuck in his ways. He'd probably be a Waterman Blue type of guy - not really interested in branching out. I could see him using an Eshterbrook or and Vishconti Homo Shampiensh. Perhaps a Shailor Pro Gear Shlim? ;) - Drew
LAMY T52 Turmaline is my favorite ink, I saw it in the video so I assume you've carried it before, but I can't find it on the site. Will it ever come back?
Me and you both, Brian! I don’t have the space or the budget for all the Lego sets I’ve fallen in love with over the years and they keep getting better. The new Atari 2600 is incredible.
Private Reserve bottles (which I tend to think of 'jars' because seriously there is nothing remotely bottle-like about that container) make VERY nervous because every time I open one I can't help picturing the unparalleled mess that would occur if it got knocked over 😫 Although it's highly unlikely this would ever actually happen, as someone who is prone to being a bit clumsy and also owns a rather mischievous cat, the possibility is always there 😅 One of my favorite ink bottles that didn't get a mention is the Diamine 80ml glass bottle. I love the gold cap and the look and feel of the raised hobnail texture on the top. Gives it a nice vintage-y vibe.
Yay, bombastic bottle blather... LOVE IT! I agree with you and Drew about the jar /tub-like nature of the PR "bottle" for all reasons mentioned: spilling, contamination & ink on hands. My fave is the same unique shape Drew loves-- the Pilot Namiki bottle, but mine is blue. I've used different blues in it over the years, but it is The BEST for filling! (It's on my blog pics.) I loved this topic! (more comments to come!)
Oh, meant to say the problem with large bottles, 50 ml or more, is my worry that I am contaminating the ink dipping the pens in. BUT with plastic Diamine "minis" I did knock one over (grabbed fast) but what a mess. I learned that baking soda is my friend for cleaning surfaces and my hands. Write on... 🖋
@@ZiaLinkZen I ink all my pens over a paper or foam plate just to be on the safe side 😆So far I've never had any significant spills, though I did almost tip over a Noodler's bottle once (a purple one at that) with the pen I was inking 😬 Thankfully managed to avert that tragedy.
I find that odd. Ink bottle usually tip and spill because they are tall, narrow, and the pen hits the indie of the bottle as you're filling the pen. Private Reserve bottles are short, wide, incredibly stable, and there is zero danger of the pen hitting that side of the bottle as you fill the pen. I can't imagine how it would even be possible to knock over a Private Reserve bottle while filling a pen. Unless you're intoxicated. Trust me on this, if you knock any ink bottle over the mess will be equally large, It's smart to sit an ink bottle in something that will castch the mess, or most of it. I just use a high-sided paper plate.
@@jamesaritchie1 You're trying to apply logic to an irrational fear. Knowing that it probably won't happen isn't going to stop me worrying that it might, because despite whatever the likelihood is there's still a possibility that it COULD, even if probability is against it. You're obviously not someone who compulsively envisages worst case scenarios 😆Common sense has no power over anxiety.
The cracking converter problem could be explained by the need or lack of need of a threaded converter. Yafa pens like monteverde, Conklin, Pineider, Maiora, and others like Montegrappa....all use a threaded converter to attach it to the nib holder. Screwing the converter on is way more satisfying than pushing it on. What do you think?
Re: Audiobooks. Drew, there are apps for that- ask your library about Libby/Overdrive, that's the one they're most likely to have. There's also Hoopla and BorrowBox. Good luck! Audiobooks are the bomb. :D
I've been binge-watching the Pencasts catching up on what I've missed. Who knew they would be such an addictive combination of entertaining and informative?!? I love you guys and really appreciate all you do. I have a question for you: What is an appropriate glue to fix an acrylic fountain pen cap? The cap isn't cracked or damaged, it just has two sections that have come unglued. Thankfully, I read the label on the Super Glue package before using it and ruining the pen! Thanks in advance.
The Platinum anniversary pen reminds me of the Harkonnen suits from the ‘84 version of Dune. Was the word Brian was reaching for “sacrilege”? Oh, and happy anniversary! Your discussion regarding the sticky misery of humid climates was a great reminder of why we settled in the southwest. I do NOT miss that!
Uh oh.. I may need to try River of Fire ink. I LOVE Fire and Ice. The space suit glove though! Omg, those Esterbrooks, I love them. Stunning. Pricey.. goals.. whoa. Purrrrrrple… all of them though. Oh, GRIND AND TUNE. Yes 🙌🏽🙌🏾🙌🏽
You mentioned liking the nib on the Platinum Kanazawa Leaf. How about a pen spotlight on it? I feel like it doesn't get as much recognition as it should (it's my favorite pen).
Brian's take on unique nibs (if you can close the cap, there's room for more tipping material) is definitely where I've landed as well. My first Sailor Zoom became my main daily writer, and I have resigned my wallet to an eventual Naginata-Togi. However for anyone who likes that "line variation like a brush pen" writing experience, they really owe themselves giving Fude nibs a shot. Fudes were part of my daily rotation for work notes and journaling before I got the Sailor, and the Zoom has essentially been that, but better. It's certainly a bit easier and more pleasurable to use than my Jinhao Fude Sharks... but at literally 100x the price I'd hope so. If you find a Zoom or Naginata is something you have a nice use for, a Fude is also intended to emulate a brush for East Asian calligraphy, so why not give them a try? Just considering brands Goulet carries, Jinhao has a variety of sizes of Fudes, and Sailor has the Fude De Mannen. It may not makes sense for him to sell them, but I hope Brian has given them a shot for his own enjoyment.
When I was a lad, Victorian coins were part of the daily change and , occasionally ( rarely ), an early George. Thing was, my hobby was collecting Roman coins
Re coloured nib pens, the Aurora 88 Trilobiti series of pens have coloured nibs. I bought the Chocolate one from Goulet late last year or early this year - and it had a brown nib; and I think there was a blue one a few months after. Not sure if another colour is due in the series.
Be careful with Spray fixative, it can change the color of what you're covering, It often darkens it but can do other funny things to colors as well. So if color accuracy is important to you, storing it in a cool dark place is better than applying fixative. More importantly, though, fixative also makes things sticky, so if you use it in a notebook or journal the pages may stick together. Basically, I wouldn't recommend fixative for a journal or notebook, I think it's more likely to lead to damage than anything else. I don't even use fixative for my art unless it's absolutely necessary.
My favorite ink bottle is the Akkerman because it has an inkwell built into the top. This makes it easy to fill your pen even when there is only a little bit of ink left.
On the subject of cracked converters I once ordered a Lamy converter for safaris etc and the casting of the plastic had gone badly and there was bits of plastic sticking out and the converter wouldn't fill. Even the black piston looked melted. I contacted the supplier and got a new one swiftly. Also you gotta love the noodles Heart of Darkness in the medicine bottle and don't forget the diamine 80ml ones.
That's why I don't like to mess with converters, especially with certain pen brands (that I shall not name... 🤣 Lol...) It's so much easier to refill an empty cartridge with an ink syringe! Oh, and Drew, I totally agree with you about Ferris Wheel Press Inks, as a matter of fact, just yesterday I ordered FOUR of their AMAZING ink colors. Btw, I love that new 20ml itsy bitsy teenie weenie bottles... 😜 in Adventurine, that goregeous grey w/rose gold fine shimmer (At least, it looks fine on your swatch... Lol...) Have a wonderful week, guys!
I am drawn to analog hobbies, especially ones with a historical connection. I believe they are on the rise too due to everything else in life going digital. My big one other than fountain pens is wet shaving. I think a great section for future pencasts could be exploring these other analog hobbies some. Maybe have a guest on to talk about other tangential hobbies (like you did with the watches).
I was wondering if Brian and Drew can hear the musical interludes, especially with Drew sort of conducting there near the beginning, and then Brian answered my question later in the pencast with a bit of behind the scenes intel on how that works. Answering my question before I could ask it: Well done!!!

If you like vintage toys, Drew, you should visit Portugal. Particularly Porto has some gorgeously vintage and vintage-like toystores and toys. It's a pleasure to visit them and browse through their shelves, even if you don't buy. Another place I'd recommend is the museum of children games (or something in those lines) in the Royal Mile in Edinburgh (Scotland/UK). Binge-worthy toy store full of vintage stuff.
Since Lamy changed their converters a couple of years ago, I have had MANY of them leak out the back, often all over my purse, and one crack along the seam of the plastic.
Yay, Friday PenCast! I have to say I purposely do not finish your PenCast in one day so I can enjoy a little bit every day of the week :) Edited to say, so I can only get to turkey hammock by the end of next week! But hey, turkey hammock is turkey hammock :)
Brian - splinter help *drawing salve*. You can purchase at natural health stores, amazon, maybe Whole Foods? Also, speaking of puzzles. Have you seen the channel 'Mr. Puzzle'? Chris Ramsey has some great puzzles. What a rabbit hole. Congratulations on 16 years!! (My husband and I both forgot one year).
I write with a medium almost all the time except when I am journaling when I used a stub. I only have a couple of fine pens and those are my travel pens used to journal in a pocket journal. They are small pens like the Kaweco Sport and Liliput and the small TWSBY.
I responded this on a different video of yours, but the TWSBI Swipe's clip is perfectly functional on a shirt pocket. I have one on my hospital scrubs every week, no issue.
the only converter ive ruined was one i tried to flush dried ink out with paint thinner about 8 years ago, another converters piston seal broke up into chunks on a Jinhao after about 4 years
Great show guys! Question for your next show. If you do need to carry, and use a nice gel or rollerball pen, what do you guys carry? I love my fountain pens. However, I typically need to sign on restaurant receipts, etc.
If you could create a writing instrument from scratch that uses fountain pen ink, what would it be? No limit on price or materials. I would suggest nitinol for the nib and clip material.
I'm pretty disappointed that the Esterbrook Estie for that price is a Steel and not Gold Nib, are there any pens that you feel for the price point should have a gold nib?
It's not a color but.... I love the rainbow nibs on the TWSBI Irises, and the Monteverde Regatta in that finish. I wish you could buy extra nibs in that finish for those pens. The Monteverde at least came with an Omniflex option which is an acceptable compromise. I would be totally into a colored nib on a limited edition pen, depending on the color. I don't know if I would buy an otherwise unexceptional pen just to get a colored nib.
My wife and I have been following a list of anniversary gifts. For paper, I made/recycled some paper. For leather, my wife gave me a briefcase which I use all the time. The hardest theme so far was copper.
do you have any plans to carry the new Jinhao x159 in the near future? it is currently available on ebay, but, if given the option, i would rather buy from you.
Can you PLEASE do a video on what the best "wet" writer pens for shimmer/ sheen inks are??? I am a small writer and love EF anf F nibs and bought some gorgeous shimmer Vinta inks that just aren't working with my sailor lecoule and EF kakuno :(
My little tip of the day - when I find a pen needs cleaning I write it in my planner (I have the week days on the left and a blank page on the right) and one morning I'll take all the listed pens, and my syringes, downstairs and put them beside the sink. Then randomly sometime during the day I see them and go, Oh I can do this now. Otherwise they are out of sight out of mind.
Space nerd? I spent 40 years as quality assurance inspector in DoD. I remember going to Air and Space Museum in DC. They had entry hatch to Apollo Command capsule as exhibit. I marvelled at quality of construction and spent an hour looking just at that. Sort of bittersweet also as I remembered the ppollo 1 astronauts caught in capsule with no exit.
I have been trying to do the three pens at a time thing, but it turns out I can't change myself, haha. I still don't clean my pens when one of three runs out, I just ink up another...
I haven't had the chance to try the anniversary #3776 Century nib, but the way you describe it, it sounds a lot like the difference between a regular #3776 nib and the Nakaya version. Nakaya uses the same nib shape, but the nibs are made, ground, and tuned by hand and it makes all the difference in the world. The Nakaya nibs feel and perform like high-end nibs. It doesn't hurt that they're custom tuned to your exact specifications by a grand master nibsmith. It seems they wisely decided to put that attention to detail and quality on the anniversary nib, minus the custom tuning. And I agree: it looks gorgeous.
I totes relate to Drew! I have a #6 gold triple extra fine flex nib created by Richard Binder and it is by far my favorite nib...its a thing of beauty that is very utilitarian!
Pilot's Posting nib is still my favourite after many years, to a point I have two spare in case they stop making them or mine wears out. They are nice for art or small writing. I find them smooth, but if you write a bit heavy, quick and large it will have feedback. There is a good amount of line variation between using a light touch and a deliberate weighty stroke, which can be used to create interesting textures that go beyond a normal pen drawing. Pilot FA would be my second favourite for mostly the same reasons, it's as fine as a posting but very sensitive, less usable for small writing.

Next time you'd like to borrow an audiobook from the library, ask if they have Libby or Hoopla. It's much like Audible in that you borrow a digital version of the audiobook (or ebook) in question, but it's free through your library! This way you could listen to the entire Game of Thrones series (or all the Stephen King you could wish) without having to cart several dozen CDs around. Doing a quick look through the Richmond library site (no idea if you're in Richmond proper, but it's an example), it looks like they use Hoopla (and that they have a good set up for kids using the app). However, as a librarian, I have to beg you to check before bringing coffee in around sensitive, probably expensive equipment. I know this is way after when you've actually done this, but for anyone else inspired to visit their public library for any reason, please check before bringing food and beverages along. Tiny visitors of the six-legged variety love to storm the library, snack on crumbs, then see what else is good to munch in the building.

It was FANTASTIC! Thank you! - Drew
I agree with Drew's comment regarding the converter the comes with the Monteverde Ritma - I had problems with leaking (at the nipple) and loose fit. I replaced it with a Schmidt converter... problem solved!
Yes! Same! - Drew
High end cigar boxes by pen brand in order by nib size.
Perhaps a Shailor Pro Gear Shlim? ;) - Drew
@@Gouletpens Hahaha, there will be no other way to say those pen names again, than in Sean Connery's Scottish accent.
Private Reserve bottles (which I tend to think of 'jars' because seriously there is nothing remotely bottle-like about that container) make VERY nervous because every time I open one I can't help picturing the unparalleled mess that would occur if it got knocked over 😫 Although it's highly unlikely this would ever actually happen, as someone who is prone to being a bit clumsy and also owns a rather mischievous cat, the possibility is always there 😅
One of my favorite ink bottles that didn't get a mention is the Diamine 80ml glass bottle.
Yes! I've looked into Libby! - Drew
You're the best two fountain pen guys I've ever sawwww! You two are really *ahem* wax.
LOL thanks, Becky! - Drew
Thanks for the kind words, Donna! As far as the resin repair goes, we've had good luck with a two-part epoxy like DuploMix. - Drew
@@Gouletpens Super! Thank you so much, Drew.
Coolest daughter gift ever.
That should go on your office wall, please.
Question for you guys. What inks would you recommend that gives steel nibs a smoother writing experience similar to a gold nib?
Oh! I just assumed you took last week off. Now I have TWO episodes to watch today!
🤣🤣🤣 I agree, what tvs is Drew buying?
Love the space glove pic!
everyone else: complaint, gripe, issue
brian's diplomacy brain: _preferential discrepancy_
The part where Brian said "Your not spoiling it, no ones reading about the turtles" I LAUGHED out loud!! 😂😂😂😂
I have a few Late Roman Bronze coins - those are super fun, too! I prefer the larger silvers so that I can fiddle with them. - Drew
@@Gouletpens Not too much fiddling now, Drew, it can be damaging to one’s health. ;)
Wow 3 hours is the earliest I’ve been… I normally work Friday’s so I’m glad to be this early
Ellie is AMAZING. Gold star for the pun, and gold star for her adorable machinations
Colored Nibs on the - Aurora 88(8) Mambas and Trilobiti cioccolato!
My favorite ink bottle is the Akkerman because it has an inkwell built into the top. This makes it easy to fill your pen even when there is only a little bit of ink left.
Brian: Do you celebrate Anniversaries?
Drew: It depends on how many cartridges, comic books, or costumes that I have purchased recently.
Lol...)
Have a wonderful week, guys!
what's your most favorite ultra extra fine? i only have Platinum 3776 UEF and i've never had any issue with the flow
Any shot for Sailor Northen Lights in a King of Pen size?
I am drawn to analog hobbies, especially ones with a historical connection. I believe they are on the rise too due to everything else in life going digital. My big one other than fountain pens is wet shaving.
I think a great section for future pencasts could be exploring these other analog hobbies some. Maybe have a guest on to talk about other tangential hobbies (like you did with the watches).
That saw is brilliant, props to Brian for his woodworking skills. Very cute and definitely a very 10yr old plan.
LOL yeah small doses of the Pencast is probably better for your health. ;). - Drew
Happy Anniversary Brian. Also August 12 th. Twenty Seven years. Congratulations.
I responded this on a different video of yours, but the TWSBI Swipe's clip is perfectly functional on a shirt pocket. I have one on my hospital scrubs every week, no issue.
Brian: that saw was beautiful! 👏And what a sweet moment! ❤Ellie is such a smart cookie! 🍪
The stories about Ellie had me cracking up! 😆
the only converter ive ruined was one i tried to flush dried ink out with paint thinner about 8 years ago, another converters piston seal broke up into chunks on a Jinhao after about 4 years
Great show guys! Question for your next show. If you do need to carry, and use a nice gel or rollerball pen, what do you guys carry? I love my fountain pens. However, I typically need to sign on restaurant receipts, etc.
Try a Retro 51 rollerball pen! They're super fun! www.gouletpens.com/collections/retro-51-tornado-rollerball-pens
I have had the black tip on a converter split on 2 Conklin pens. Love the show guys.
Thanks, Zack! - Drew
do you have any plans to carry the new Jinhao x159 in the near future? it is currently available on ebay, but, if given the option, i would rather buy from you.
Rockster Pens (independent pen maker) has purple and yellow nibs on some pens. And the blue mamba pen had a colored nib, right?
Drew's recommendation for 'The Last Ronin' is an excellent one. Tragic, heart-breaking and fulfilling. More Drew nerdery!
Oh! Ellie's saw! How precious! Someone pass the Kleenex. I have a speck of sentiment in my eye. ❤❤❤
The humpy bumps on the 3776 remind me of the section on the 1980-90s Waterman Lauret.
Brian, you're super talented let alone a wonderful dad. You and Rachel raised beautiful, intelligent & very creative children. Now you're, literally, picking the sweetest fruits E-V-E-R 🥰 !!! Btw, I'm sure that Ellie's talent & her creativity are also a product of your & Rachel's creativity... 👑💡🪚❤👨👧 #ThisGirlRocks
Hi. I refill all of my Lamy Bottles and Montblanc Shoe Bottles. Thanks Guys, love your channel.🤗 All the best from Australia.
