This was my first game to see at ND.Everything went perfect ! Checkout John Robinson with the mitts on as well as their players with the almost full length jackets on.The chill factor was 28 degrees ! I got to meet Ron powlus at the signature inn after the game where his parents were staying. This trip was a DREAM come true due to my late Uncle Tom Carter who played under Leahy.I have seen every ND game vs usc from 1964 to 2002 I believe, all because of him getting tickets.ND was everything and MORE that I expected.I could hear the hit that Kinnom Tatum put on the rb.I sat on ND side on the 40 yd line and just behind the old green chairs.I stood the whole game! This was a top 5 on the bucket list.
Great story, I try and get out there every other year at least, was at Boston college blowout in 2022 in blizzard conditions. I remember this game well.. Notre Dame had tough linebackers then..like Kinnon Tatum, Lyron Cobbons, and Reynoldo Wynn.. kicked their asses up and down the field this game..
Randy Moss was signed sealed and almost delivered but for a charge resulting from a fight in West Virginia.. would have changed the trajectory of the program he was that good obviously
My dads family is from SoCal and my moms from Mundelein, Illinois. Loved when these 2 played around the holidays always a fun Saturday. I chose up very young Gold and Blue through and through. #GoIrish #beatTheVille
I remember the Tatum hit against USC and how small Keyshawn and his soft USC team came up in this game.. this was a weird year of could haves for ND.. lost in excruciating fashion to Northwestern and then blew a lead against a more talented Ohio state squad later in the year.. losing by double digits.. but they also beat Army on a goal line stand and a good Washington team on the road..along with Texas at home.. strange year that will live in my mind forever..
I am a huge notre dame fan but I would say from a football stand point he should have gone someplace else. He was a classic drop back quarterback with below average mobility. Just not a good fit for that system. I know he was rated extremely high coming out of high school but im not sure why Lou went for that style of QB. Just didn't fit his offense
A few things to say here to give perspective.. first and foremost Holtz tried to use a conventional passer which wasn’t his strong suit.. If they were able to land Tommy Frazier, that would have been a game changer.. secondly Powlus lost something after his clavicle injury it appeared and was under immense pressure thanks to Beano Cook and the other ESPN morons predicting greatness.. many of us bought into it too. Another reason for the slide is due to the lack of game breakers on the mid 90 teams. The loss of Randy Moss from 95 class really hurt and they could not stretch the field vertically with guys like Malcom Johnson and Bobby brown. Autry Denison was an above average runner and tremendous leader and had tons of heart.. but they had no backs that could go the distance and the loss of ACE recruiter Vinnie Cerratto really affected their top end talent that they used to get in the late 80’s.😢
These USC teams were absolutely horrific to watch. I was a born in 1993 so when i started to watch SC play it was during their awful years in the 90's when they seemingly lost to everyone but I think we could blame all that on bad coaching because we should have hired Barry Alvarez away fro ND before he went to Wisconsin I mean imagine what could have been every year Holtz vs Alvarez in the Big Game it would have been awesome
I went to S. Bend for this game... was about 29 degrees with freezing rain at game time with a 25-30 mph wind. So cold I didn't care about the game after I lost complete feeling in my body by half time. Shortly after this game, I don't know specifically when) USC started scheduling this game (when played at ND) in early Oct and not in November. Smart move as the cold was hard for USC players to contend with. They don't show in this video the three no pass interference calls against K Johnson in the end zone.. which would not have changed the final winner of the game but would show how hard it can be to win at ND stadium. We can thank Larry Smith for the decline in USC football evident in this video.
Agreed Hammond actively rooted against ND while guys like Charlie Jones and Dick Enberg had no horse in the race and were awesome announcers. Last good one we had was Mike Tirico.. former cowboys coach Jason Garret is beyond awful..truly sucks ass an announcer
@Marcus Walker it was because back then their offensive line was GREAT. They were well coached, handled the the teams and just wore them down. Now they’re weak and undisciplined. Every game they’re good for at least a half dozen false starts or more. They get pushed around all the time. Back in the day, they were the ones pushing guys around. Hell, they get pushed around by Navy and their defensive line has to average at least 40 lbs. They don’t have one guy over 300 lbs and some that are only 250 or 260 and they’re pushing around ND guys who are 320+. Poor coaching if you ask me.
The power of that OL and those quick-strike FB runs is so much more fun to watch than these slow-developing runs from the shotgun these days where it's either +3 or -3 yards.
My, oh my!! Who could ever forget, the forgettable performance of "Me"shawn Johnson.... oh, I'm sorry, folks... I truly meant Keyshawn. As I seem to recall him, during the week leading up to the game he ran his mouth (which was pretty customary for him during these days) saying, "These boys won't be able to cover me". Well, "Me", seems like these "boys" did a really good job covering your ass. Your only TD was after a missed tackle... a play in which that "boy" still had you pretty well covered. I don't even think "Me" broke 100 yards in this game. But, these "boys" weren't going to be able to cover him. LOSE ON, USC!!!
Robinson was picking up the scraps left over from the Larry Smith years. Then we returned to our winning ways after that, excepting the brain fart that was Paul Hackett.
The post-1993 teams were not as good because the administration forced the removal of Vinnie Cerrato. In '93 Holtz beats FSU, has one loss, yet Bowden gets the championship with a one-loss team.
Derek Mayes was an absolute baller for us. Made so many big plays. Sad to say I forgot how much of a Badass Marc Edwards was too.
Yes they was really good

I live in berwick where powlus played high school ball and I love watching these clips!
Cool story
Derrick Mayes and Marc Edwards were bosses at this time
I was thrilled when Mayes went to the Packers - sadly he never was able to match his college performance in the NFL.
Denson as well
Randy Moss was signed sealed and almost delivered but for a charge resulting from a fight in West Virginia.. would have changed the trajectory of the program he was that good obviously
Loved watching "Me"Shawn Johnson quiet for much of this game!
And then he became an overhyped pro! There were only about 2 years where he was a top 5 wide receiver. T.O made fun of him all the time
This must've been the start of like a 10 year stretch where Notre Dame couldn't recruit a kicker for the life of them. Thankfully those days are over
I love how SC says its not a rivalry .Did we say it wasn't one when we kicked there ass 12years in a row!!!!
My dads family is from SoCal and my moms from Mundelein, Illinois. Loved when these 2 played around the holidays always a fun Saturday. I chose up very young Gold and Blue through and through. #GoIrish #beatTheVille

Awesome! My first one in the ND-SC rivalry. I've been waiting to see clips from this game. Thanks!
I loved these post National Championship teams for ND. Ron Paulus from Berwick Pennslyvania proved he could lead the Irish.
Love the irish but Powlus was avg. He personally turned the ball over so many times and cost us alot of games. Lou's last game vs sc

Paulus had his moments, but his career at ND was a disappointment.

My uncle has this game Ball in my grandma's living room!
a
I still wear my 23 Autry denson jersey to the games every year
This is one hell of a camera angle. I have never seen the ND field this wide from current NBC broadcasts.....

John Robinson had that "This sh*t ain't cool, not cool at all." look on his face a few times throughout the game.
OMG!!! 1:53
Edwards - the best ND FB ever!
This was probably Powlus’s best game at ND. We saw the potential greatness that was unfortunately derailed by injuries and bad offensive coaching.
that hit at 1 56 was awesome

Robert Carter The game in South Bend has been played in October every year since 1959, except once, in 1971.
my bad... I do remember the cold... brrrr. Never again.
1:55 owned lol
Damn he got smacked lol
Game has changed but would be great to have the FB as a key offensive weapon.
Notre Dame is indisputably the best College football team in the nation.
scary I remember the game watched with my grandfather just about all of them, nuts life is short.. scary fast
I was at that game great memories ☘️🏈
Charlie Jones is 1,000x better then worthless Tom Hammonds.
Amen, also really like Dick Enberg
Agreed Hammond actively rooted against ND while guys like Charlie Jones and Dick Enberg had no horse in the race and were awesome announcers. Last good one we had was Mike Tirico.. former cowboys coach Jason Garret is beyond awful..truly sucks ass an announcer
Edwards was a beast.
This game is louder on my phone than it was at the stadium a few years ago! What happened?
Just imagine Randy Moss at WR for Notre Dame....
Could have had a chance at a title!
Randy Moss plays for ND, they beat Ohio State in 96..
Can't figure out what song this movie was in lol
My lawd Edwards was a machine it was a guaranteed touchdown at any yard line lol Go Irish
@Marcus Walker it was because back then their offensive line was GREAT. They were well coached, handled the the teams and just wore them down.

the hit at 1:56 I remember seeing when it happened. they'd probably flag him for hitting a defensless player now
Yes....you are correct...they now play feminized football.
The power of that OL and those quick-strike FB runs is so much more fun to watch than these slow-developing runs from the shotgun these days where it's either +3 or -3 yards.
Great game RocketShark!, do you have the entire game? Can you upload ti?
@pdbland1 Yeah in 1995 they were good. In 2012 they're ranked #1.
Angels in the Outfield theme song to open the broadcast
i remember watching this game
Rivalry games are so special back then. Today they suck they don't mean as much
Was this the year Powlus won his second Heisman?
Who knew he would trip himself in another game against SC, an overtime loss. Clumsy. Anyway, don't blame ND for a wild comment by Beano Cook.
And like other ND coaches before him, Holtz hung it up after a loss to USC.
I guess after beating U$C 11 straight years kinda got boring to Lou.
Actually Lou was 9-0-1 against USC before losing his last game. Devine started the 12 game unbeaten streak.
My, oh my!! Who could ever forget, the forgettable performance of "Me"shawn Johnson.... oh, I'm sorry, folks... I truly meant Keyshawn. Johnson career was better then there college n pro.
Keyshawn still balled out. And he showed love to Lou Holtz at the end of the game.
#FBu Marc Edwards #44 favorite of all time he wrecked dudes in 1995.
Robinson was picking up the scraps left over from the Larry Smith years. Then we returned to our winning ways after that, excepting the brain fart that was Paul Hackett.
they still are
This was a pretty good ND team. Not the best of the Holtz era but a good team. They lost to. Northwestern, Ohio State, and Florida State.
The post-1993 teams were not as good because the administration forced the removal of Vinnie Cerrato. In '93 Holtz beats FSU, has one loss, yet Bowden gets the championship with a one-loss team.
@@A100-y2c that's the way it goes. Don't lose to BC then.
@Irishfootball25 Angels in the Outfield
Its only been a couple years lol
And they did it without green shirts!
Ron Powlus tease moment
oh yeah? guess who's number 1 :)
38-10 ? Throw out the rankings. They are meaningless.
are you kidding me.....
This further proves Holtz was kind of a doucher. Autry Denson makes it down to the 1 yard line and good ol' Lou calls a FB dive on first and goal..
y can't they find a decent kicker. hello it's college.
Ate their lunch!
Notre Dame used to be good?
Yeah and Sam Bowie was picked before Michael Jordan too.
It is a joke. However, they haven't been good for a long time.
Big thumbs down, how about showing the score..... touchdown after touchdown yet no score, waste of time, block channel 👍
