I remember Topic and Delfin Jewellers so well, also Belfast's and Hennes & Mauritz; my favourite place in Jo'burg? The East African Restaurant up on the first (mezzanine) floor: everything white, potted palms, waiters in long white East African one-piece cloaks with the red fez, the best caramel curry and white rice west of L.M. My favourite treat; also the grandeur of the Metro Cinema and the fabulous (Portuguese) London fish and chip shop, gigantic and spotlessly clean, endless lines of people, closing at 3pm, also that amazing giant folio of Picasso harlequins in the Joubert Park gallery. Picasso in Africa, what could be better. And rarer? Park Station with those giant art deco Pierneefs and 46 platforms, ten of which you could drive down onto to see your friends off. The vibrancy at night was unique, in the daytime jewel-like little lizards darting all over your garden after a brief rain shower; sharp, clean high-altitude air and tremors in the mid-afternoon as ancient mineworks a mile below gave way.

A lot of nice old cars / limos back then. It showed the Whites had money in Joh/burg. Now everyone has bakkie, it shows they have no cheap labourers working for them and have to do their own manual work. 😂🤣.

Those were the collared days of Johannesburg, I wonder if they had casual Fridays.
