Thanks Jordan. I'm an experienced watercolour portrait artist but I'm extremely "tight" with my rendering. I really dislike the realism in my work but it somehow always ends up that way! So, I thought that learning to do portraits in gouache might loosen up my style overall. Just ordered the Strathmore 400 Tan Toned Mix Media journal as a dedicated gouache head sketchbook. Let's see how I go 🤔😁
Jordan, you are such a joy to learn from. Your calm, gentle approach to teaching is what this anxious learner here can't thank you enough for. Thank you for being willing to share and instruct. We are all blessed you're here..."For me, painting's all about adjustments..."--a quote of yours I loved & will bring to mind as I work, to keep me focused on the end goal while many an adjustment is needed in between.
Thank you! I love that you’re painting brown people! I’ve been trying to find artists that work with water based mediums that also paint darker tones so that I can learn from them! Thank you for this!
You are very talented! I'm trying to learn how to paint with gouache and from this video I learned I wasn't using enough water. You make it look really easy. Thanks for taking the time to create these videos!
Thank you so much for painting the same reference in watercolor and gouache! I really appreciated watching them both in succession. I've been futzing around with both for a while, but I haven't tried this idea of just doing the same work with both separately. I'm definitely going to try several pieces like this, as I think it will help me get a better intuitive grasp of which medium I want to use when.
Thank you so much for this video--I learned so much and can see an improvement from the portrait I did while watching this video compared to the last I worked on. I really appreciate you!
I like your style a lot. I was worried that paper wasn't going to hold the water as well as it did. I always use 100% cotton paper. I haven't tried mixed media paper that I remember. I can be a bit heavy on the water.
Thanks a lot for this tutorial. I like that you take your time to explain and you show every steps of the way. On top of that you’re very talented. I love your artwork!
Hi I know this is from a while back. I want to know how did you decide the undertone was blue? I new to painting watercolor and I'm struggle with opacity. I keep putting too much paint on the canvas.
The artist’s process was interesting to watch but I found the video very difficult to watch, due to the volume of the music in comparison with the voiceover. The music is mixed way too high and it is a strain to hear what is being said. Background music really isn’t necessary with a demo like this, and certainly should not drown out the commentary.
Who knew blue would be so useful. This was wondeful to watch. The only mediums ive used are acrylic and alcholo markers but this helped me with color theory.

Does adding diluted colours on top of all the layers re-activate the paint underneath?
Yes it does unless your really control the amount of water and get the brush on and off quickly. Even then it does re-activate slightly
watercolour

I didn't really mind the music, I thought it was pretty relaxing and kinda groovy :)
