Goes in to buy Toilet Paper, and comes out with a bunch of items, and no toilet paper. That sounds like the true Costco experience
and then you plan to go next week and get it instead (but now you need dish soap) and you get the toilet paper, but forget the dish soap, and so it continues.
That Costco is so insanely similar to every one I've been in here in the U.S. Like even the signage is the same!
It's eerie but at the same time comforting
they look pretty much exactly the same in canada too
@@xTDaviesTx I'd assume in Canada all the signs are also in French due to regulations.
It is amusing seeing the USDA logo though
Same in the UK. At least the one near me.
They emulated the american experience so well, you even have to drive an hour to get there
Lol this is so true.
The driving distance is a consequence of the location selection factors, making it an indirect but integral part of Costco's business model.
One key reason often cited for Costco’s success in Japan is that many major competitors tried to enter the market and failed. These other companies attempted to adapt and localize, but in doing so, they ended up being perceived as something they were not. In contrast, Costco maintained its original business model, carving out a unique category for itself.
Nah dog, I'm 30 minutes equidistant from two Costcos.
@@mattmichael2441what's their unique business model?
@@nexustom5823bulk items, high quality, cheaper per unit price, they have everything a household would need, they offer car/eye/hearing/pharmacy services. Costco gas is cheaper by a good amount. They have a food court. They sell regional/local items. If you figure out how to not waste the food you buy you'll be golden.
3:40 Mudan, Costco does that on purpose. They did a study and noted when there’s less variety available, customers will settle on one and therefore purchase more. When they had more variety, customers couldn’t choose and didn’t end up buying anything. Also, Kirkland is Costco’s own brand, idk if you knew that or not.
That plus keeping a low SKU count is a big part of the store’s efficiency and how they keep prices low
@@kinezumi This is the biggest reason.
Trader Joe's also does this for the same reasons.
brilliant
Its actually economies of scale and being able to negotiate good deals with the brands they order from. That is how they pass on low prices to consumers.
“i’d come back to costco just for the hotdog” typical costco experience
I've not yet tried one. Are they that good??
@@anthonynelson6671they're fine. Hotdog is tasty. Air fryable if you leave it in the fridge
"Never gonna use all of this!" Mudan, you don't have kids. When you have kids, using up Costco size stuff is easy.
Plot-twist: He’s the kid
There's literally a babysitter in his household.
I've never gone through Kirkland toilet paper faster than when my kids got potty trained.
@@hoongfu The times when one of my kids put an entire roll in the toilet (once unraveled, once just an entire intact roll) were 'fun'
@@Zelmel My worst nightmare (so far). Geeeeeeeeez. My kids have shoved giant wads, but never an entire roll.....yet.
Petition to get Mudan to try speedrun buying and building a PC from parts in Don Quijote
Can we get him to do it while dressed like Bruno Mars in his recent commercial for Don Quijote?
Oh no
This is a good idea
@@shiftyy2786 my ideas are always good (mostly) XD
@@cristianjimenez3657 time to start daily comments again
even though people nowadays don't think about it much but the actual /original purpose of Costco or Metro in Europe is to serve shop owners... as in shop owners go to Costco buy things in bulk came back to their shops and use or sell those stuff in their shop... that's why it is called "costco wholesale" not a costco retail
Yeah, like Makro around here
A similar type of supermarket opened in my country long ago and I don't have any idea how they still in business there is so much nonsense in bulk that give it a month or 2 they replace the whole thing with new bulks of other brands
I wonder if there are stupid people that buy this
It was actually funny because we got Iraqi cookies and disgusting hfcs products from usa at the beginning then dissapeared out of thin air then some south American then some Japanese europes products
I had to explain this to other kids b/c my family owned a restaurant when I was a kid. Like kids would be "who needs a pound of sault?" people who actually SELL food themselves!
@@titheproven954 the average american
Exactly.
Really cool to see a non-American's first experience with Costco! Also, an interesting thing about Costcos in Japan is that they partner with resellers, so you can buy Costco/Kirkland products from other, smaller stores like Stockmart, often without the bulk quantity and pricing.
Mudan complaining about croissants doesn't understand living in a big house. They'd go out in a day or two
Even in my family of 4, that package of croissants would last 3 or 4 days. Especially when I was a kid and we were all living together, teenagers eat a lot.
You should definitely freeze them and reheat it in an air fryer or small oven if you don't have enough daily consumption to finish them off before they get moldy
Truth
@@CryosxifyI don't think they ever lasted long enough to get moldy in my household.
Ahh, Mudan has finally had the firsthand Costco experience. You used to be able to go into the food courts without an membership but they changed that a few years back.
"I'd come back to Costco just for the hot dog." Yeah. The American in me felt that hard. There was one point in my life where my fiance would take me to Sam's Club and have date night at the cafe. We couldn't afford much, but we got our belly full and had a place to walk around and just talk. Proving it's not the place that's important, but the company you keep that is.
"I have never seen such a huge bottle of alcohol in my life" press X to doubt
it would have been a believable statement if he wasn't eastern european
Piwo Piwo Piwo Piwo
For those who are familiar with Costco in the States, it is indeed fun to visit in other countries. And yes, you use your non-Japanese Costco membership card. (I don't know if Mudan went as someone's guest). A lot of the items offered are exactly the same - I'm looking at you, Kirkland pizza - but then you'll find some regional gems. It's also fun to see what the food court offers besides the standard hotdog or pizza slice.
Mudan, that is the emptiest I've ever seen a Japanese Costco. You have no idea. Also keep in mind that a lot of Japanese families will split their Costco purchases. Like two families might split up the pack of a dozen croissants. Living spaces just don't have the storage capacity of American homes. I'm not sure if it's still there but there's a place called Stockmart in Shimokitazawa that used to sell smaller portions of Costco items, at an upcharge, of course.
I get why they discontinued it, but I remember when Costco Japan used to offer takyubin service from one of the Chiba locations 20 years ago. so worth it.
I had to google what takyubin service is. Is that a home-delivery service?
@@anthonynelson6671 the name is trademarked by Yamato Transport (aka kuro neko) but I use it as a general term for door-to-door package delivery services in Japan. The competitors have alliances with various convenience stores, which makes it easier to ship stuff domestically. But my favorite use of the service in the past was shipping luggage from the airport. I haven't traveled to Japan recently, so I'm not sure how the general shortage of truck drivers is affecting these kinds of delivery services.
@@anthonynelson6671 Sorry, must not have hit reply on this yesterday. Takyubin is trademarked by Yamato Transport (aka Kuroneko) but I use it as a general term for express, door-to-door package delivery services. Companies have partnerships with various conbini and it's pretty convenient. It's been a few years but my favorite use was actually sending luggage from the airport instead of carrying it through various train lines. I'm not sure how the recent truck driver shortage has affected takkyubin speed and prices, though.
I use it as a general term for express parcel delivery services.
Can you use your California Costco membership card?
Mudan discovered the American Embassy.
It's so cool to see a Costco in a different country. The experience is so close to the state's it really made me think you were in the US. That would be a good place to go if an American was feeling home sick lol. Also love seeing your reactions to things we think is normal Mudan
6:46 New Zealand’s beloved CookieTime cookies! They’re so damn good 😍
theres a multi-story Costco on the eastern edge of Tokyo near Chiba
It has special shopping carts compatible with the sloped escalators but is otherwise a normal Costco
You know where I learned that Japan has a Costco? Yubisaki to Renren, a romance anime. I chuckled when I saw the episode where they went to Costco and wrote it off as a weird American reference until I googled it and found out that Japanese Costco actually exists.
Taiwan has it too.
Yayyu Japanese Costco Review ❤❤❤ Missee opportunity. Mudan should try out the Costco samples and do a review on them. That is part of the Costco experience
Always nice to see mudan upload
6:46 New Zealand mentioned!!!
fun fact, on a random day some items are cheaper than on other days probably for clearance or something, the unfortunate thing is that you never know when these markdowns happen or on which items
The Portuguese Bean soup, Bulgogi Bake and Chicken Stick & Potato are all new things I've never seen in US Costcos cafes. I wanna try them!
I have never been able to try the Costco Hotdog, every time I've been in Costco there have been a massive que 😢
The Costcos near me scan your membership card before you order at the food court. Even if their food court is outside.
Go right before opening or close to closing time.
The hotdog is good.
Interesting to see how much effort went into that place. Every row is full, everything has Japanese AND English names/titles! It is not meant to serve tourists, but they still added that everywhere! Kudos!
Ikea in Japan does that too!
I'm rather familiar with these kind of store setups here where I live. You do need apply to their "partner" to be able to buy but once you are in, so many benefits and just waht Mudan said, sometimes you just buy stuff you dont need.
When he did show the super fish oil, that is one of the advantages of bulk buying since the vitamins and related items are in such big containers, you get much more than having to constantly buy the small ones every single time you drink em all. And the skeleton was amazing.
As a resident of Canada costco, the alcohol in japan costco is crazy cheap. Soda, however, is stupid expensive. In Canada, it is $ 11 USD for 36 cans.
The Rootbeer in the video is imported from the USA, which is why it's a lot more expensive. The domestically produced sodas are a lot more reasonably priced at Costco in Japan.
It's so freaky that inside this Costco looks EXACTLY like ours here in the UK (the Bristol one anyway). Like honestly only the 日本語 differentiates between the two! Our Costco saves us a shitton on all our basics (kitchen rolls, toothpaste, shower gel, protein powder etc) but I've also got some cute basics clothes wise (leggings, pjs, hoodie etc). We have to be careful as it all adds up in the moment but we save so much in the long run. Thanks for the look around, I genuinely enjoyed it Mudan ❤
This is the feeling visiting superalko for first time
3:03 you can freeze the bread and croissants to make it last longer (thaw in refrigerator overnight) but those big packs are usually for families... anyways if you ever visit the States again, you should try the costco cream cheese danishes, its like crack
Your ice cream is melting. Take it out of the fridge before you go to the register, dont carry it around in the shop
Nice to see it's pretty much a carbon copy of my local Costco here in the States.
We go to Costco in Japan - it is good for some things, but others, there's just too much to be able to use it all before it goes bad. Obviously, things you can freeze are good - some types of bread, meats etc. You can get cuts of meat that you cannot get elsewhere in Japan - large steaks etc. - try getting a 1.5 to 2 inch thick ribeye steak anywhere else in Japan - next to impossible. They also often have some good wine that is cheaper than you could buy it in other places- we always pick up a couple of bottles there. The rotisserie chicken is also a steal. Laundry detergent, and so on are worth getting there too. Finally, if your Costco has a gas station (not all do) then filling up there each month will easily pay for the membership because it is so much cheaper than anywhere else.
Seeing as there's no Costco's in Estonia (the closest one is in Sweden...which is separated by Baltic Sea), Mudan's reactions are understandable.
Now this is the type of content I like
S tier video. I loved the video, mudan! Now go to an American costco and rate it through 1/10
I grew up on Costco and live within 1 mi from one currently. It's great! It was so cute watching you be in such awe.
This is like watching Mitch on Modern Family discover Costco for the first time. When you come to Vancouver let me know and I will treat you to one of those famous hot dogs in Canadian Dollars!
Such a complete Costco experience with the rad hotdog and so cool to see what they have, not to mention the toilet paper must be locked up in a special section
Here in Germany I have seen the chocolate chips quite often and can recommend trying them. Not sure about five packets
Don't worry mudan, this was a good video
finally a japan vlogger with an awesome voice
Is this Mudan's first time at a Costco?
Day 23 of asking Mudan to complete every single prefecture in Japan and Day 6 of telling Mudan to improve his reading speed and study for the JLPT exam. The backpacks are called "Randoseru" (ランドセル) and only used by primary/elementary school kids and every single child needs to have one. The only way to separate the rich kids from the poor ones are the quality of the materials. They can go up to $1300 or more.
At some early vlog he said that he already planned to visit every prefecture
@@themightypengu yep, but I'll continue until he actually complete them... it's like an annoying reminder.
This feels like a Mudan culture shock video lol
Maybe it's just the IRL raw reaction vs the voice over
Haven't been to Costco, but I didn't think it'd look so similar to Sam's Club
It’s crazy that I recognize 90% of the items there from Costco Canada, just shows how consistent they are worldwide
As a costco shopper of 26 years, this video is peak "First time here?" energy.
Bro if you think this is crazy - you can buy CARS from costco in the US.
Eh, most of those "extras" are via a third party partner
You can buy Houses AND Caskets at US Costcos, so you can live in a Costco and die in a Costco.
Mudan in one those shopping challenges. He'll buy anything you want if you can carry it out.
It is really surreal seeing average big store in the States with Kanji on some of the items.
Lol my sweet summer child.
Costco's business model is economies of scale. That is why there are only one or two options, for each catagory, vs konbini where you have more but higher price. Its a brilliant company and the pay is pretty decent too for a retail job, much better than working at Walmart.
6:46 cookie time spotted. great New Zealand brand
8.63/10
Good call on not getting a cart
It's rather comforting to know that if I moved to Japan I could go to Costco and it would be exactly like being back in the U.S. for an hour. (But with better stuff in the food court!)
6:22 ''I thought people were taking a shit''
The amount that this resmebles US Costco's BLOWS. MY. MIND! I would not expect it in Japan! The visual language is all the same, the aisles are the same... thaaaat's odd.
He got the legendary costco hotdog
Seeing food items in bulk really reminds you that, yes, there are 8 billion people on this planet and mega stores like Costco need to feed 100k people around each location. We really go through so much food. Plant stuff makes sense since we have a scale of farming areas but seeing all that meat and dairy products really make you think about how many animals across thousands of factories there are, why the animal industry does "inhumane" practices to meet the demands.
Very good video. Always love Costco content. 😊
You need a cart if you get toilet paper.
You can get bulk items that are gluten free at Costco too. ❤️
I just notice that this might be the first time Mudan ever went to Costco
That is not half the size of an average Walmart in the states, no way
Absolutely hilarious watching the video knowing he’s supposed to get toilet paper and then seeing it dead center of the screen at 2:10 only to be ignored
I'm kinda shocked how much of the store, products, and packaging is just in straight up english instead of kana or kanji. At this distance, you could hardly tell the difference between this and a costco in the states. except the people are much skinnier and the carts are still american sized.
Go inside for 1 item but come out with a full cart is a very common experience for many people.
This was surprisingly not much different than a Costco in the US. I used to go quite a bit until I moved to a busier city and found the Costco here is so insanely crowded every time I've tried to go, and I was going to lose my mind if I had to keep dealing with that.
You should have gotten the bulgogi bake tho, its a Japan/Korea exclusive!!!
7:36 And this is where I got triggered. Supreme Pizza, WTF, COSTCO USA, you lazy bastards?
thanks mudan now i know what costco is.
Costco Japan is an adventure where the familiar meets the unexpected. The iconic hot dog-it’s more than just a snack; it’s a bite of comfort in a place full of surprises. Sometimes, the simplest pleasures are the ones that stick with you the longest. Enjoy!
3:40 - Honestly that's pretty typical for Costco, but I feel I've always gotten top quality from Costco. I'll only have maybe three options, but I'm usually fine with it. The bigger issue is whether I want a month's supply or not... I usually need to buy milk for example at Walmart or somewhere else on the way back home. The two gallon containers here are just too much. Also you're 100% correct, it can be scary. I've gone in for eggs and a hot dog from the food court. I left with eggs, a hot dog, and an air purifier. I don't know how but... I really like the air purifier and still use it today.
2 gallon containers of milk from a Costco??
@@anthonynelson6671 I could've worded this better. They sell a 2-pack of 1-gallon containers so you end up with 2 gallons total. A single 2 gallon container would be massive to pour haha. They also have a 3-pack of a half gallon, so sometimes I just get this.
@@ChrisB5_ Ohhh ok, because around where I live in the US the Costco we go to has I gallon cartons of milk and I've never seen a two gallon carton of milk. That would be a pain to make room for in a fridge at home, might not even fit.
I buy the organic half gallon 3 pack, lasts over a month
I went to Costco in the UK for the first time last year. Came in with great expectations because of all the videos I've seen online of Chinese and Korean Costcos. Ended up being quite disappointed because they had no cool shit 😥There's one wholesale store (Fegro/Selgros) I've been to in Germany that is so much better in terms of items they offer.
This thumbnail made me think mudan was on cart narcs
Would love to see another Costco video tbh, round two where you actually get toilet paper?????
I have 2 Costcos 15 min of me. Love Costco looks just like the ones we have here. It's worldwide after all.
Costco originates in Kirkland Washington I believe without looking it up. I was born and raised in Washington so Costco is just a way of life my mom even worked for Costco prior to having me. Unsurprisingly a Costco in Washington it's probably much larger and full of more variety
In the US the toilet paper is usually at the farthest corner of the store from the entrance. That way you get to se all the fun stuff on the way to the boring stuff you went in to buy.
I saw the campfire wood in the store, maybe there can be a camping episode before it gets too cold
A box of croissant can’t even last a week in my household 😂
We have a similair store here and I had to stop going. Every time I'd come home with like a giant box of Snickers that I didn't really need.
Tomorrow, back to Costco. 🤣
Japanese Costco is just like Costco in the US, from what I see the only difference is Japanese branded items and products here. What I am surprised is the fruit selection 2:55, since I didn't know Japan could sell fruits in bulk.
1:33 this is exactly my experience on traveling to Estonia.
The European mind can’t comprehend this
bro has not seen the 36 pack of root beer at an american costco
there's 2 costco now, iirc, 1 in chiba and 1 is osaka.
costco works because their turnover rate is 2x a month.
What do you mean about the turnover rate?
You being excited over $0.70 per root beer made me realize my American privilege. During some sales, I can get a 12 pack for $2.50
I cant wait to watch this video with my Chicken Bake!
Man goes to wholesalers (for consumers) for the first time
godddd i miss costco. havent been in a while.
i need to ask my parents to buy me a box of chicken bakes next time they go.
I use to go to Costco in London we went in and left with two trolleys full of items every time. there is literally no other supermarket like that in London.
i like that he used walmart as the average size in the states but its literally the same costco in the states even the same items which was cool to seee ! just saw that big skeleton at a store today lol
Most of that bulk stuff really works best for families. Never had any interest to go to somewhere like this before I was married with a kid, afterwards though, I can buy most of that stuff and get through it all.
Mission failed successfully
Didn’t know there was costco? I would’ve thought Connor praise costco their once a week 🤣
I feel like mudan has never been to a Costco ever lol
Yeah, costcos are easier for when you’re getting stuff for a family.
Also where the heck are you gonna put that Skelton in Japan??! I understand this for American houses with lawns but like, I want to know who in Japan bought this!!!
Are there Costco’s in Estonia?
