- Whenever I Say Your Name
Whenever I say your name, whenever I call to mind your face
Whatever bread's in my mouth, whatever the sweetest wine that I taste
Whenever your memory feeds my soul, whatever got broken becomes whole
Whenever I'm filled with doubts that we will be together
Wherever I lay me down, wherever I put my head to sleep
Whenever I hurt and cry, whenever I got to lie awake and weep
Whenever I kneel to pray, whenever I need to find a way
I'm calling out your name
Whenever those dark clouds hide the moon
Whenever this world has gotten so strange
I know that something's gonna change
Something's gonna change
Whenever I say your name, Whenever I say your name, I'm already praying, I'm already praying
I'm already filled with a joy that I can't explain
Wherever I lay me down, wherever I rest my weary head to sleep
Whenever I hurt and cry, whenever I got to lie awake and weep
Whenever I'm on the floor
Whatever it was that I believed before
Whenever I say your name, whenever I say it loud, I'm already praying
Whenever this world has got me down, whenever I shed a tear
Whenever the TV makes me mad, whenever I'm paralyzed with fear
Whenever those dark clouds fill the sky, whenever I lose the reason why
Whenever I'm filled with doubts that we will be together
Whenever the sun refuse to shine, whenever the skies are pouring rain
Whatever I lost I thought was mine whenever I close my eyes in pain
Whenever I kneel to pray, whenever I need to find a way
I'm calling out your name
Whenever this dark begins to fall
Whenever I'm vulnerable and small
Whenever I feel like I could die
Whenever I'm holding back the tears that I cry
Whenever I say your name, whenever I call to mind your face
I'm already praying
Whatever bread's in my mouth, whatever the sweetest wine that I taste
Wherever I lay me down, wherever I rest my weary head to sleep
Whenever I hurt and cry, whenever I'm forced to lie awake and have to weep
Whenever I'm on the floor
Whatever it was that I believed before
Whenever I say your name, whenever I say it loud, I'm already praying
Whenever I say your name,
No matter how long it takes,
One day we'll be together
Whenever I say your name,
let there be no mistake
that day will last forever

One of the greatest songs of all time
when I first heard this song it brought tears to my eyes.
The best song
My most spiritual song of joy and despair brings tears and goosebumps
Sting, please continue take good care of yourself. After Prince and Bowie, you, Beck, and Morrissey are all I have.
Enjoy the art of the artist, but don't worship them! We're all human and pass eventually!
Sting Whenever I Say Your Name is one of my favorite song from the album Sacred Love great duet with Mary J Blige!
This tour was fabulous!
thanks for uploading it like this- no fuss, lyrics on the side, no crappy slide show. It's really useful
Whenever the sun refuse to shine, whenever the skies are pouring rain
Whatever I lost I thought was mine whenever I close my eyes in pain
Whenever I kneel to pray, whenever I need to find a way
I'm calling out your name

I wanna wish a Happy early 70th Birthday to Gordon Matthew Sumner Sting! Sting Whenever I Say Your Name Happy 70th Birthday!
sooo beautiful
such a great song, very inspiring duet!
Gorgeous!!!
What a great song. Love the lyrics E. S.
Mary j Blige and things to it is very powerful. Mary j Blige talks about survival and what she remembers when she needs to survive.
This is a great song, a great composition, and well worthy of the Grammy it won. Some of the previous comments mentioned dissatisfaction with the way the song ends; doesn't this song have spiritual as well as romantic meanings? So the ending is not weird or crappy; it's traditional gospel music in the African-American genre, which, all things considered, makes perfect sense.
i love lukaaa very very muchh !!!!!!!!!
❤😢
I miss you Dariau...
The chorus is influenced by J.S. Bach's prelude in C major, BWV 924
Yeah, he loves Bach
Need the backing track...
It's better live when sting is with the orchestra, and the other singer who doesn't try and over do it.
Sting many times does stuff better live because sometimes the studio stuff is a little canned. I think live he gives his musicians a little more freedom so it's not overly refined.
I hadn't heard this song before I heard it a few months ago on Qello...on the Live from Berlin concert with the orchestra and Jo Lawry's help on vocals. So the version posted here with Mary J is not original to me it is the second version.
I strongly prefer the Jo Lawry version with the symphony. It's slicker and seems to go better with the song itself. But this version has it's merits...percussion is more important in this version I think...also Mary J is nothing to sneeze at, she has more than proven herself over the years! But I think the takeaway is when you start with a good song, and you apply good musicians to it, the outcomes can be infinite and beautiful.
The song has great bones. It is a great start to any performance by a talented musician.
Moron or a genius, that would be Sting himself, I guess:
''Love me like a prodigy
Love me like an idiot boy"
I get your point, it's true that the song's coda is a bit jarring, but I'm sure Sting designed the song this way precisely to showcase Blige: since he had her for just one song he wanted both the soft and the hard side of her. It's a heartbreakingly beautiful song, the main body of it, and the coda doesn't really ruin it for me.
someone knows where can i find karaoke of this song? :))
and did it work? ^_^
didnt get me - oh well, the mans a genius so its probably me . . . can anyone remind me what the song was that was about a weekend father with visiting rights taking his son to McD or somesuch??
Sounds like you might be talking about 'im so happy I can't stop crying by sting'
I like Joy Rose better as duet with Sting on this one.
I know sting always seems to mess up a song with that shit lol
LOL that lady is a famous rapper Mary J blige why the song was so awesome that he picked someone like that but if you listen to alot of stings works he does alot of that ballot crap at the end and sometimes in the middle of his songs. Sucks. Think he trying to be jazzy sounded doesnt work and never has with his stuff.
His voice is not suited to soul music, so he's overshadowed by Blige's ostentatious vulgarity
You are an idiot!
bullshit...no one can overshadow Sting...he rises to whatever the occasion calls...
@All 4 EL Elyon+ Holy shit what an idiotic use of the "race card." Sting was at his finest when he was playing JAZZ with some real heavy-hitting African-American pros like Branford Marsalis, Darryl Jones, and Kenny Kirkland among others.
This song just happens to be inane and repetitious as fuck. That the style doesn't suit him is not only a defensible opinion, but may well explain why this over-produced shit album was selling on Amazon used for a penny in a matter of weeks!
Even Sting's dabbling in Country offered mixed results...
