Atlantic City at the dawn of Prohibition is a place where the rules don't apply. And the man who runs things -- legally and otherwise -- is the town's treasurer, Enoch "Nucky" Thompson, who is equal parts politician and gangster. Side by side with his brother Elias, Atlantic City's sheriff, and a crew of ward bosses and local tough guys, Nucky gains a reputation as the man to see for illegal alcohol. He does business with all the top gangsters -- Al Capone, Lucky Luciano, "Big Jim" Colosimo -- and he does it well ... until a former protégé takes matters into his own hands, setting the Feds on Nucky's tail.

I really wanted him to live so he could reunite with his newfound family, maybe if he would've survived, Tommy wouldn't have killed Nucky.

Stephen Graham, from Snatch to boardwalk empire to the Irish man. He is doing a great job at killing those gangster roles.

Stephen Graham was fantastic as Big Al. I'm a Jersey guy also so I'm a big Boardwalk Empire fan. The Ritz still exists to this day and there is a plaque on the Boardwalk entrance that notes some famous visitors that once stayed there such as Enoch Johnson and AL Capone.

  • @travismiles5885

Richard Harrow may have been fictional but he was representative of a lot of veterans that came back from the "war to end all wars" who were very disfigured. The tin masks were made for them to cover their wounds. The people who made them we're artists in their own right. There is a very good chance that there were some guys who came back from that war who got involved in organized crime but didn't make big names for themselves like Lucky or Arnold and the rest. Having a severe disfigurement like that would make them easy to pick out in a lineup. Still, Richard is one of the best characters in television very compelling he could commit horrific violence but still had the want and love in heart for a quiet normal family life. As a veteran myself I felt a connection to him and Jimmy. That scene when Richard asks Jimmy if he would fight for him and Jimmy says the last bullet always chokes me up. I felt that. Its something civilians will never know.

I saw this years ago and I was so pumped for Steve to get a leading role for once. I was really hoping he would not end up like he did in The Sopranos. So much for that one. I think my favorite character from this show though was Richard Harlow. That dude rocked it. I was hoping he was real. Sad how he wound up. All in all though a pretty good gangster show. I love this time period.

Very similarities between actors and real life. Doyle and Jimmy was pretty close. Until this day i do not understand Jimmy's death. Even though Nucky said: "Blood is thicker than water". Eli is a lucky bastard.

The real Jimmy Darmody was a scary-looking dude. Micky Sparks too. Um, wouldn't want to meet Micky Doyle in an alley. 'Nucky' looks pretty fuckin' harmless and social and all that, doesn't he? I was unaware that Lucky had his throat slit from ear to ear - kinda explains the name. Tell ya what though, this earned you a step up in the subscription lottery. Nice work!

First of all, that music is annoying.
Mickey Doyle was never the character BWE made him out to be. Hs real name was Mickey Duffy. He became one of the most famous and powerful beer bootleggers in Philadelphia and in Atlantic City. BWE made him out to be a weasel that relied on Nucky as well as others. Thats not the case.
Duffy had legitimate businesses including owning several prominent clubs, including the Perkin and the fashionable Club Cadix at 23rd and Chestnut streets in Philadelphia in 1924.
He didn't die the way BWE made it look either. While staying at the Ambassador Hotel in Atlantic City, Duffy was shot to death by unknown assailants on August 31, 1931. His murder was never solved
