I like the theme permeating all Die Hard movies: McClane fights against an enemy that is well prepared, motivated and more professional than he is. He does not win only because of his perseverence but because he has also a lot of blind luck, an element that, as life often shows, is very important in success. And it is this blind luck that makes the movie realistic.

That is a much lighter version of the journey of the lead from the book Die Hard is based on. In 'Nothing Lasts Forever' John is a retired cop named Leland, visiting his daughter (not wife) when the building is seized. As the plot develops it becomes clear that the terrorists are real, the company IS corrupt and exploitative (and Holly is complicit in that) & these revelations combined with the stress and pain he has endured leaves Leland mentally disintegrating as the book continues. He becomes increasingly ruthless and unstable as the situation escalates, finally going completely over the edge when Holly dies in the books version of the 'Hans out the window' scene (no last minute save, 'Tony' goes straight out the window and drags her along before Leland can even move). He then intentionally scatters the bonds to the wind in hopes of ruining the company. Then on his way down to ground level, he get the drops on one of the last remaining terrorists, who drops her gun and surrenders immediately and shoots her in the head anyway. Leland has defeated the terrorists, but it's clear he is a badly damaged man by the end of the book.
I love seeing John pick off each terrorist one by one. I'm not sure why. I guess it's a combination of the underdog putting big bads down, and also because they all go out in different ways, and they put a lot of creativity into their fights and kills.
