What a nice VCR! I really enjoyed watching this video, you have told many features of it. One interesting topic is the fact this model has a different, simpler cassette loading mechanism than the C9, making the SLO much more robust. The unlacing feature is also a cool trick to reduce tape drag, increase speed and prolong the valuable heads' life. I think Sony made an effort to design this model so it was bulletproof as a workhorse. Your particular unit is a treasure, really hard to find in this condition. I wish it found a nice new home. Greetings!
Certainly a SLO! I compared the top-loading mechanism with the SL-F1 and it's a completely beefed up and unique to this model design. It may well be a 'professional' machine but in the modern age it really is the perfect Beta with real retro flair too. Ultimately, this machine would make or break the Betamax format as having a reliable machine for duplication of tapes for resale must have been the top priority for Sony at that time. Of course the rest is history but I really don't think Sony lost the format war but rather just moved on and after all, the last Beta machine was only 10 years or so before the last VHS machine...
Last year 2 of these machines were available from a shop in The Netherlands. These are gorgeous. Wanted one but my Wallet did not agree . Many thanks for the video showing this beauty, I enjoyed it very much😊
Thank you so much for the comment - yes, they're selling for 2000€ and to a Beta fan, it would be worth it if the checks have been done prior to shipping. They are truly a great machine and so robust.
Hi Russell, I did think of you when I was making the video as I know you use your HF100 so much and really love the Beta HiFi format. I'll drop you an email just now...
Sorry for my lack of knowledge, but I recently found a Sony SLO-1800. Not quite the same model as the one in the video, but I believe the video ports are the same. That said, could you tell me what video cable the machine uses? I want to somehow convert the signal to RCA so I can see if my machine will actually play a tape. Thank you!
Oh wow, a SLO-1800! Any chance you could email me a picture of the socket and the rear of the machine and I'll dig through the manuals for you - I don't have a SLO1800 manual but I do have other manuals that should give you the info you need. Email is mrbetabyte@gmail.com
Hello Alex, nice machine and useful video you've produced.....again!! I've got one of those on the bench here and been pondering over the intermittent colour issue. I may send you a more detailed email but I now think it's not drum servo related but chroma processing. I've posted a short video on YT. Anyway, will be in touch soon!
It is indeed an interesting machine. Wonder if RF out for video and audio HiFi is the actual RF signal recorded on tape, this is a great candidate for VHS-decode project, This is better than S-Video.
I was thinking this the other day and I will have to look at the RF output in more detail but from what I understand it's the raw RF from after the pre-amp stage but I'll let you know in a future SLO1700 video as I have a few more to make over the next few months. :-)
i tell you who had all of this model the hire shops in the video start if of needed to get VIDEO on betamax to hire out they would use model like this you had to wait in line to copy over from vhs and all of over 18 video were on beta i went to a big carboot sale the man had alot of beta tapes i was told what was on them i am not a fan of betamax as like you i had to fix them up SONY PVW 2650 Betacam SP Sony DVW-A500P BTS BCB 75 PAL BETACAM SP, the range here are my bag
Definitely but there were several duplication 'houses' that used these too and very successfully. Sony did go all-out on this model to make them as rock-solid as possible. I also have a DVW-A500P and it's a great machine although I have error codes on it at the moment so a video on that to come soon,
Unfortunately I have long since sold this unit but I may have another one soon - I will email you if I do. Hope all is well with you Aaron and take care.

Hi Alex, Russell here. I love this machine. One of these would be ideal as a dedicated audio player/ Recorder for me.

@@MrBetaByte Yes that's the signal needed, after the pre-amp not before. Let us know, maybe the oscilloscope will show the RF envelope.
Will do - should be looking at a SLO and investigating it in more detail very soon.
