Werde ich mir ansehen, maße mir nicht an theologische /-sophisch zu interpretieren, dafür bin ich einfach zu laienhaft. Musste schmunzeln ein Lied aus dem 30 jährigen Krieg für einen Gottesdienst zu nehmen, aber letztlich sind die erprobten Methoden (und die meisten Lügen) der sogenannten heiligen Kirche seit jeher die besten, weil sie immer noch funktionieren...
Arbeite selbst als Erzieher bei den Protestanten, muss also eigentlich leise sein da ich immer noch Kirchensteuer zahle und mit dem regional Verband als Träger sehr zufrieden bin.
Mich wundert eher das die katholische Kirche überhaupt noch Schäfchen unter 50 hat, wobei es scheint als wären die Hirten verlorener als ihre Herden

Funny you say that, because one of the things that led to the war was princes in the Holy Roman Empire converting to Protestantism for the sole purpose of seizing the property of the Catholic Church within their territory. The Protestant leaders only wanted control.

The Papists and Habsburgs lost. It was a victory for Protestants and Anti-Habsburgs. The Pope never regained his strength lol. The catholics went into the war thinking we would be push overs but in the end their power was broken and they had to flee with their tails between their legs.

From then on, the 30 Years War became more of a political and truly continental war instead a local and religious one. However, you're still right when you said the anti-Habsburgs won, particularly France and Sweden. After 1648, the Treaty of Westphalia was like the de facto death of the HRE, never to recover until its final demise in the Napoleonic Wars.

The Catholics/Habsburgs lost. The pope demanded the war continue, but he was ignored by the Catholic league, because they had been utterly defeated in the battlefield and had they continued fighting, Prague would have fallen to the Swedes, and the French would have continued pushing deeper into Germany and Catalonia. The HRE had already become more or less irrelevant, the member states were already acting in their own geopolitical interests. Funnily enough it was the conflict between Pope and Emperor that delayed the formation of a German nation state. See the Investiture Crisis and the many other disputes.

Thielmann, Tillmann Thielemann is a common name nowadays but it seems it comes from the Nether German linguistic area (West and North Germany). Tönnes, I don't know if it was universally a German name at that time, but in Cologne it is still the nickname for someone called Anton or Antonius.
But given this song was written around 250 years after the 30s years war by Hermann Löns, it is likely the name is just fiction.

I’m learning German for uni requirements and cause it interests me. How exactly do you use Er nennt sich? Does it just mean “his name is”, as if refering to someone else in the third person? In my lessons so far, I’ve seen Name and heiße/heißen
You have to consider, that this is an older kind of High German, they use some words or grammar which is old-fashioned. Er nennt sich would be literally "He calls himself". Today we would just say Er heißt.

When I try to look up words from the first line "Es schlägt ein fremder Fink im Land", I sadly get something like "It strikes a strange finch in the country" or "It strikes a foreign finch in the country". Is a "strange/foreign finch" a way to say "rascals" in German? I do not know German sayings.

Ich dachte immer, dass ein "Kuck" oder "Guck" oder keine Ahnung wie man es schreibt oder wie es nun wirklich heisst ein uraltes Wort für ein Nachschlagewerk ist. Aber ich finde auch dazu nix und überall steht "Krug". Was für mich aber kein Sinn ergibt, vor allem wo ich wirklich irgendwoher glaube, dass das ein altes Wort für eben ein Lexikon war... hmm
