My favorite moment is when Chris got a gift he was going to give his wife stolen by a stage magician and Dan fights tooth and nail to get it back because, damn it, he might not care for Chris' wife but he does care about Chris and no one steals from his best bud and gets away with it. Getting the gift back for Chris was his main motivation and any "revenge" was just icing on the cake for Dan. It was Dan at his most heroic.
@@bun8032 Not really. That’s just something a bunch of people in the community came up with. There’s actually not much evidence to support this theory.

I think what makes me love Dan is like, that at he's just so openly a broken man in an everyday situation, but written in a way that doesn't make the viewer sympathise with him or be against him. We just observe his life as it is. He's lonely, has shit living conditions, depends on his only (human) friend, lashes out when said friend can't spend time with him because he has a healthier life with connections that need to be maintained besides Dan... And all of that while lacking the self awareness as to see it. And I think that by itself is a deeply interesting way of portraying such a character
a lot of the joy I get out of dan comes from the morbid curiosity of trying to figure out what makes him tick. My favorite example of this is in Dan Vs. George Washington when Chris demonstrates his strange patchwork understanding of the world. why does he know who sculpted Mount Rushmore but not where it is? What's the story with him and his grandma? Why does it sometimes seem like he actively tries to make himself miserable? He's like a puzzle box you know you'll never solve but you want to try anyway.
Plus the fact that we know his parents were at the very least abusive, going so far to scare the best therapist just be telling them about his childhood.
It's a dumb moment but the fact that the best around therapist runs out screaming and crying and Chris and Elise ask him what he did and he just responds. "I don't know, I just told her about my childhood."
I love Dan as a character. He's just such an angry little man, but that's the point. Everyone is aware of this fact, and they don't try to sugarcoat it or put it in a different light. He's just a jerk, and that's that. Another thing is that he isn't entirely a talentless idiot loser. He does have some random talents, and he's surprisingly well-spoken. The manner in which he speaks is far from common and shows off his more scholarly side. Also, he has his own code of ethics, sticking to his elaborate plans even when there's an easy way out due to his principles. Seeing him succeed against all odds is satisfying, even if it isn't a total success (many times when he fixes a problem, he accidentally creates another, like when he got his 50 cents back from the bank but he set it on fire, leading him to needing to find a new bank). It's balanced. He does what we all wish we could do: go against what we despise and come out on top. (also I forgot to add I love this one specific thing he does. whenever he gets pissed off at something Chris or anybody says and there's something near him, he tends to knock it off the table, like what a cat would do. it's hilarious ngl)
1:57 this part made me realise…. That’s basically me…. I do feel like Dan only having one friend and all. But I do majorly spend a lot of time alone and I guess that gives me some negative energy as much as I hate to admit it
The reason I think Dan works as a Jerk character is because the writers showed us that he isn't a one-dimensional asshole. He's angry at the drop of a hat yes, but he's also insightful, shockingly well-read in terms of classic literature, doesn't strike at random despite his characterization of being angry in general, and despite his seeming disdain for Elise he never tries to get rid of her because he knows that it would hurt Chris. Plus as the show goes on, it reveals that life just kind of has a tendency to kick Dan in the balls at every given opportunity to the point where he reflexively assumes the worst because that's all he's ever known...

The beauty of Dan Vs is that his anger isn't ever misplaced. Well, there was this one time he tried to start World War 3, but let's be honest, those Squirrels deserved it! But outside of that, pick any episode and you'll see him unjustly attacked by people, places, events and situations that just cause him to go over the top. The reason why Dan works is that we as the viewer can relate to it, from something untimly happening to your shopping or having some asshole throw a ball through your window, we've all been there and we all know that impulse to stop the car, track the asshole down, strap him to a railroad and make him wait as the number 53 comes, that'll teach that guy for thinking I want to hear a badly done rendition of Mozart's 5th played as if you're playing banjo! I was introduced to Dan by way of the Flufflepuff MLP fan animations. He was inexplicably part of the cast, and it was great. So when I found out what he was from I watched it. It was also great, and a really weird kids cartoon. It really felt like it almost should have been an adult cartoon in the realms of Family Guy, but it wasn't and it was SO much better for it.
