- The key fob shell on my 2nd Gen Honda Pilot failed. The physical key and modules still worked fine. I used the following Stauber $10 replacement shell from Amazon and its working great.

I can't believe that people are trying to charge $150 to $250 for this! I understand you have to make money, but from what you just showed us, that is a bit extreme! Thanks so much!!!
I purchased this Stauber brand key shell 9 months ago. Replacement was easy, 5 minutes plus time to clean accumulated dirt off the parts that were not replaced. Is very solid when assembled. Two differences I noticed. One is the replacement is slightly longer than the original, Stauber is 2 1/4” while original is 2”, at their maximums. Is slightly noticeable when in my pocket. Also, the red panic button is very slightly not as flush with the shell as the original. I carry more in my pocket than most people and occasionally I have set off the alarm when I assumed a position that compresses my pocket. This will not apply to the vast majority of users. The original shell/fob can be bought for a similar small price if you search. Stauber is very good, might be sturdier than original , 2 thumbs up or 5 stars, depending on your age.
Thanks for sharing your experience.
Why can't the dealership do for us what you just did? I'm OK with paying $20-$40. Instead, they tried to rip me off over $115.00 Thank God I RUclipsd and found you! My replacement cover was $7.50 from Amazon...shipped!
Awesome! Happy to help. Have a great New Years!
$7.50 From Amazon SHIPPED! About 10 minutes to figure it out. THANK YOU!
Thanks for this video. I did this for my sister's 2012 Honda Civic, because the original Honda key shell cracked. I did have to break that plastic piece from the old shell to remove the key in order to put the key piece into the new shell.
Your video was very helpful. It's removed the anxiety I had over replacing the shell. Thank you
Glad to help!
I followed your vid and it worked for my 2013 honda civic lx, the metal piece was hard to get out of the original shell but I carefully pried off the Remaining plastic with a small plier. The parts all fit snug without modifications. The little angled plastic part has a slant, I marked the slant on the metal piece of the key with a marker to show where the slant goes.
I'm so glad i found this video,I saved $130 when my 2012 pilot key broke and I bought this shell using the amazon link on this video, thank you so much.
You're very welcome.
Watched your video and was able to order and replace my key fob with NO problem! Thank you!
Awesome! Happy to help.
Thanks for taking the time to post this… it worked perfectly for my 2009 Honda Fit key
Fantastic, you're very welcome,
Oh my goodness sir!!!!! I saved over $150. Thanks so much. And my Honda Pilot is 2010. The same key artifact is good for it. Thanks again😁😁😁🌻🌻🌻🌻🌈🌈🌈🍷🍷🍷🧚🏻♂️🧚🏻♂️🧚🏻♂️👩⚕️
Fantastic, happy to help.
Thank you for this video. I used my key as a pry tool, broke a small piece of plastic making the key loose in the fob. I will order this replacement fob and correct the issue for short money.
We're welcome. Glad to help!
Def get the fob that this guy shows. I got one and the key end that goes in the plastic was to wide. Ordered this one here he’s using in the video. Should work fine.
Same, I ordered one with one screw and will have to reorder.
Thank you for your informative video and for showing this product. It worked great on my 2013 Honda Pilot and you saved me 160$ the Honda dealership told me was "necessary" to repair my broken key. THANK YOU!
You're Welcome! I'm sure we all have other things we'd rather spend our hard earned money on.
Absolutely!!! Thank you again!
Watched your video. Had duplicate results without any problems. Thanks for the information.

Thanks for this vid. Didn't even know this product existed. I've broken several keys to my 06 Accord. Ordered one of these today!
You're welcome. Happy to help!
thanks for the vid. You saved me $50. Went to the honda McDavid dealer in Frisco and the jerk at parts gave me such a hard time. Saying I can't buy a replacement key fob from him or amazon and he'll have to cut me a new key.
Anytime. I'm glad I was able to give you another option
Your dealer sucks. The one near me sells just the back half of the fob for $8.50. This is all you need if the metal part is still in tight and it is only broken around the screw hole, like this one.
Great video. Here at a Honda dealer getting car serviced now. Parts dept quoted 170 for one new key/fob. Rebuild two for 65. Thanks for the video.

Thank you for saving me money. I just ordered the key fog from amazon.
fog?
Thank you for your post, you just save me a lot of trouble, stress and a lot of money ....THX
Awesome. I'm happy to help.
just broke my key fob yesterday, thank you for posting this video it was very helpful
My pleasure.
This solution worked for a 2010 Honda Accord EX-L sedan. No Shims needed. It fit perfectly. The screws were off a little bit, but with some effort it was able to screw in. Thanks for the cheap solution, and saving me from having to go to the dealer or locksmith and spending a lot of money.
Cool, glad to here that everything worked out.
@@BIsForBudget $10.42 with tax and shipped Prime from Amazon. I Ordered it on Sunday and came on Tuesday
Works as advertised on a 2015 Honda Pilot. Thanks!

It worked, thank you so much. You saved me 150 bucks
Fantastic, happy to hear that.
Glad too see this....my 08 accord key snapped in the same spot today.
Awesome, I'm glad the video helped.
How did you bypass the engine immobalizer? There is a small chip inside the key case that has to be next to the key slot inorder to start the car. Or is it inside the electronics key control?
Hi Suyash, it appears some years had a separate immobilizer chip in the key fob. In my specific case, this chip was included in the main module.
Thanks so much! Worked great!!
Fantastic, glad it worked out for you!
thank you very helpful
I felt the same way no locksmith no dealer. I hear you loud and clear, I'll put that $100.00 towards the oil change.
Absolutely, there are a lot of other items I can take care of with the money saved.
WD 40 worked. And this is so sturdy. Love it. Saved me at least $250 !!!!!! So happy. Now I can cancel my appointment with the greedy Honda dealership 😁😁😁😂😂😂
Fantastic! Glad to hear it worked out for you.
Thank you for sharing your solution to help out others watching this video.
Thank you so much for this video! So one question I have is what was it that you did to make the key fit tighter? I couldn't really see what it is that you did kind of what you added.
Hi Tawana, The package came with several CLEAR plastic shims that are the shape of the "T" portion of the blade. I added a couple of those shims, and that prevented the blade from wiggling inside the new shell. I then just installed the 4 screws. Shug them up, not too tight, you don't want to strip out the plastic.
@@BIsForBudget okay thank you again so so much!
Hi, great video! I have the same problem, but mi 2008 Honda Fit has the key with just 3 buttons (the guts is just the same form and size, though). My question is since I noticed the blade is held by just the two bottom screws that do not come through the blade itself, is the plastic sturdy enough to last without breaking? Thanks!
Hi Tomas. I have no issues with the screws not going through the actual metal key blade. Once I shimmed up the blade and snugged up the 2 screws on that side, it feels very secure.
Thank you! I ordered the shell.
Thanks man!
Any time.
cant even take out the metal piece of the key meaning I'm stuck with no key whatsoever. Any way to remove it without it needing to be attached to the key fob?
Great Video. This will work on 2013 Honda Pilot Key FOB? I also need a second key w FOB. any suggestions on where to find?
Hi David. It appears the design on the 2013 model is identical to the 2012, you should be good. Regarding an entire key/FOB replacement, I'm sorry, I don't have any experience with that and don't want to steer you in the wrong direction. Thanks.
THANK YOU!!!!
Always happy to help.
FYI, the back part of the key fob with the "H" can be purchased from the stealership.
I purchased what I thought was right one for 2011 odyssey and the new key is glued in? Screw doesn't come out? Do you have a link for proper replacement for 2011 odyssey or an idea?
Hi Random Grass. Unfortunately, I don't have a Honda Odyssey. I'm reluctant to comment on an item I personally have not tested. Sorry.
Hi, any tips on how to remove the screw if it has been stripped? I need to replace the battery on my original OEM key fob but the screw has been stripped pretty bad and don't want to spend on a new key fob since I don't need it. Any tips?
Historically, I've used screw extractors for stripped screw heads. However, I'm not sure if they make ones this small. You can try sandwiching a rubber band, tape or some steel wool between the screwdriver and the stripped head. This may give you enough bite to remove the damaged screw.
I want to go with the Stauber, but have they fixed it so the panic button is more recessed? I don’t really want to deal with false alarms.
Hi scjr143, I haven't purchased a replacement shell recently. However, the picture looks to be identical to the one I purchased. That said, I haven't had an issue with the panic alarm going off inadvertently. My use case is I place just this key in my front pant pocket. No issues. I hope this helps. 👍
Video is great. The battery/chip you used is not the same as the one shown on the Amazon website. Did you make any modifications to the shell so your battery/chip would fit?
Hi Pat, I just checked my amazon order and confirmed that the model number I ordered matches the link in the description. No modifications were made to the shell or chip for my 2012 Honda Pilot. The module dropped right in.
@@BIsForBudget I want to replace my 2013 Honda pilot key fob just like your video. My question is did you have to take out any RFID from the broken key fob? Did you have to reprogram the new key fob?
Hello Mauro, My 2012 LX just had the one large module inside. No reprogramming was necessary, since the "brains" of the fob were moved to the new shell. Hope this helps!
Does this work with the 2013 Honda Pilot? I didn't see you move the transponder chip, and I didn't see a place for the chip in the new fob. Is it safe to assume the chip is in the inner workings of the key itself??
Hi Conan, I can't speak for the 2013, but my 2012 didn't have a separate chip. I just moved the single module into the new shell and everything worked as expected. I would take you're existing fob apart (one screw) and see if it just one enclosed unit. Thanks!
@@BIsForBudget It's on the verge of breaking, and has been for months. I am going to order the fob you recommended, and move the chip if need be. Thanks for the video!
Does this particular shell have a place for a transponder? I've looked on Amazon and it seems like a crap shoot or nothing at all when it comes to the new shell having a transponder holder built in and no way of knowing if there's enough room to rig/make something to hold the old transponder in the new shell. Very frustrating...thanks for any info/advice
Hi Steven. Sorry, the fob in the video did not have a compartment for a separate transponder unit.
@@BIsForBudget Appreciate you responding...If you end up doing a follow up maybe you can find one. For the time being I just drilled out the tiny screw hole then shoved a tiny piece of wire through it and firmly applied JB Weld all around the base where the key mates together with the plastic fob. Did this once before minus the piece of wire and it lasted about a year so I'm hoping with the addition of wire it will last longer. Thanks for the response. Take care
@@12982evets Will do.
Grate, good video.
Thank you.
What kind of screws are these question I tried a Phillips screwdriver and they didn’t work. What kind of screwdriver do I need? Please help. God bless you.
Hi Erick, I used a small phillips head bit from the following screwdriver set to remove the original, single screw:
www.harborfreight.com/33-piece-precision-screwdriver-set-93916.html
To secure the 4 screws into the new shell, I used the "Star Drive Key" included with the replacement shell.
due to perspiration, old screw head gets corrosion and you have no option except pry it to open.
Thanks man.
No problem, happy to help
@@BIsForBudget its funny instead of buying a new fob on amazon i opted to just superglue it backtogether

Where did you order the case would you happen to have part number

Quick question, can you remote start with that key?
Hi Magdalena, my Pilot did not have that option from the factory. (I don't believe that was a factory option until recently) Buying this specific shell will not add that functionality.
@@BIsForBudget Thanks for the information. I just bought a pilot but I thought it has start remote but it doesn't. The key looks the same as the video
do they have the version for a honda civic 06?
I do see some Stauber shells for Civics. Unfortunately, they don't specify the year.
Hi my key at the bottom is not as wide as the key in your video in fact the bottom part of my key is actually the same width as the key will it still work?
my car is a 2011 honda limited edition, everything on it different it drives me crazy
Hi Mimi, I'm sorry. I would not recommend this solution if your physical key doesn't match what's in the video. The replacement shell is built specifically for this shape of key.

@@BIsForBudget will this work with 2008 Honda accord
@@joshuadiaz4182 Hi Joshua, I can't say for certain since I do not personally have a 2008 Accord. However, I did do a search under "customer questions and answers" in the amazon link. I searched "2008 Accord" and 2 customers state it works.
My struggle is with trying to physically take the key out of the shell. I've unscrewed it, but there doesn't seem to be a way to pull it out =(.
Hi Raoul Jain, quite frankly you just have to twist/tear it out of the original shell. The metal key is completely secured to the shell from the factory. Just manhandle it out, the original shell is unusable anyway.
@@BIsForBudget the problem also is that the front part of the shell which contains the key has entirely cracked off. So you know how yours is still connected? Mine is not. Do you think the key strong enough to be torn out like that?
Do you mind uploading a video of the current state of your key? That said, the metal key needs to be removed from the original shell. there is no way you can salvage the old shell. Mine went straight into the trash bin. For my 2012 Pilot, the key blade was much stronger than the plastic shell. The plastic gave way without much effort, and there was no damage to the metal key.
I'm sorry but I do not see the Amazon link for this fob...? I really need to get this ordered, will someone please send me the link...thanks!

Does this fob have a chip? I have a 2009 Honda Accord key and all I hear is about a chip.
Hi Miguel. Unfortunately, I do not have a 2009 Accord so I can't comment on your exact vehicle. That said, the case I purchased did not include any chip/electronics.
Where is the transporter chip in this one? Mine broke recently amd it has no chip either.. wondering if it worked?
Hi 973di3go. This particular year did not have a separate (tiny) transponder chip in the fob. The one main unit had all the components in it.

Can any locksmith laser cut the metal part of the fob ?
I'm not sure, I went this route to avoid going to the locksmith or dealership.
I tried replacing it but the car won't start. But when i put the key and fob back in the old it starts. Does anyone know how to fix that?
Hello aj, some Honda Keys also have s small and separate immobilizer/transponder chip that needs to be moved to the new key fob.
where is the chip for the key fob? That's needed in order to start your car.
Hi Jared. In my case, (2012 PIlot), there wasn't a separate immobilizer chip. Everything needed was integrated it into the single module.
My key fob buttons don’t work...any ideas how I can fix it without having to go to a dealer?
Hi Vanessa, unfortunately this fix will not work if the buttons are not functional. This was with another car, but I once had a similar situation as you. Replacing the battery resolved the issue. Your mileage may vary.
Will this work for a 2007 Honda Pilot
Hi Saundra! Unfortunately, I do not own a 2007 Pilot. So, I'm a bit reluctant to answer. I don't want to steer you in the wrong direction.
What about transponder?
Hi newyork581, Honda appears to have changed their design over the years. In my case, all I had was the one main module which included the immobilizer/transponder chip.
Do that work on a 06
Hi David, I'm not certain since 2006 would be the previous generation. Sorry.
I have an 08 n if you put your key manually in the door n twist it 2 times to unlock it unlocks all doors, n if you do it a third time it does this too
Thanks for sharing!
Didn't move the chip from original key?
Hi draw Fire. My 2012 Pilot did not have a separate immobilizer chip. The main module included everything.
You never showed how to remove the original screw on the key. Mine is stuck. Help.
The original screw was removed using a small Phillips head screw driver. This is shown at 2:20. If the head is stripped, I would just use a pair of needle nose pliers to remove the screw. If necessary, removed the metal key from the plastic housing, then remove the screw with the pliers. This will give you more of the screw to work with. The original single screw is not used on the new fob.
can you send link of the site

Hi Jessica, sorry this solution only works for the broken plastic shell, not for the module itself. I would first try a new battery. Then try calling a locksmith or a Honda specific independent shop. As a last resort, I would use a Honda dealership.
How come nobody has mentioned the fact that there is a transponder chip permanently mounted in the original key housing that has to be transferred to the replacement housing which is a royal pain in the butt?
Honda appears to have changed their design over the years. In my case, all I had was the one main module which must have included the immobilizer/transponder chip.
Yeah but I’m missing the whole original fob only have the key part! What then?
Hi Virginia. Sorry to hear that you lost the entire fob. I've seen some third party replacement fobs, but am reluctant to give a recommendation without personally trying out the product.
I did this for 06 Honda and my car won’t turn...used my spare no problem starting car anyone know why
Hi Garco, my 2012 Pilot did not have this, but I recall some Honda Fobs also having a small "Immobilizer chip" that needed to be migrated over to the new fob.
Great video but did not work for Honda 06. All because the chip is set apart from the buttons shell :/
I'm sorry it didn't work out for you. Thank you for sharing so others will know.
Actually... I got fed up of watching videos and I did cut the chip from the old shell and glued it on this new shell. So now it works perfectly.
@@AmIJosi Fantastic. Glad you got it sorted out.
I wasnt about to pay $100 either because it was more around $140.
I wonder if you realize that the part you originally needed is $10 from a Honda dealer. When the part you broke deliberately goes, then it's time for the aftermarket option you show in the video. The one you picked looks good but the ones with one screw will last only months so they are no bargain unless you're selling the car right away.
This did not work for my 2008 Honda Pilot. This fob sat lower on my key than the Honda fob, so my car did not recognize the key and would not start.
Hi LW, sorry it didn't work out for your Pilot. In the video and description, I specify that it was for a 2nd generation Pilot. You're 2008 is a 1st generation.
@@BIsForBudget I apologize. Didn't listen to the video, just watched and ordered. Do you have a recommendation for a 1st generation?
This is super helpful! I have the exact same key and problem and almost the same year Pilot. I will definitely buy this part and do this too. Also, related video: I needed this type of trick the other night. My car wouldn't start until I put the guts back in the key fob and held it closed while I started. I was getting worried. Was stuck in the parking lot for 25 min with kids, thinking I needed a tow truck. Then I figured it out, and found this video after-the-fact: ruclips.net/video/iD4Xk6NzN0M/видео.html.
Question: your video looks super good on the up-close shots like that. Sometimes I make soldering videos and things and my videos kind of stink. Can you take a video or photos of your camera set up itself that you use to film close-ups like this and post that too? ie: I want to know how to make videos like this.
Hi eRCaGuy! Glad you liked the video. Regarding my "setup"... true to my Channels name, it's very modest and uses a lot of items I already had.
The video is shot with my iPhone 7. The tripod is a budget Targus I also already had. I did buy a Vastart smartphone tripod mount (approx $8). Although not required, I also purchased a PowerDewise lapel mic. (approx $20). I just use a big box microfiber towel to place on my desk. Performing the work while looking through the smart phone took some getting used to. That's it. Nothing fancy.
