Thrifting for Antiques & Vintage Charm in Old World Florida!

- We're on a bargain hunt today! Tree-canopied highways lead us to yesteryear in Umatilla, an Old Florida village that has some great deals on antiques and vintage, lurking in crazy old buildings long passed by time.
Our first stop is the Old Packing House, a 1910s orange packing center with open walls from the time before air conditioning that now constitutes a two-story vendor mall. There's all sorts of fun in this place, where decorator deals, cast-off clothing and valuable vintage all live in a vendor mall that surprises us with everything from Blenko and Viking glass to Tammis Keefe linens and Belleek porcelain at prices too cheap to leave behind!
After an hour or more spent shopping this fun store (and meeting another online reseller who's also getting great deals here), we take the proprietor's dare and go up the road to another early open-air Florida building, a 1930s garage with a hand-scrawled sign announcing that it is Don & Joe's Used Merchandise. This is a true junk store, piled high and deep with everything from used appliances and dusty Coke bottles to surprises like a Peggy Karr fused glass bowl! (Did I just call her Kathy Karr? that's my sister's name, lol.) There aren't many Old South junk stores like this left these days!
Then we see it, a nice looking vintage chrome/wood/glass table from the 1970s that looks like it may have sat atop this pile of stuff since it was new. Can we get it for a price we can afford? We take it up front, make our offer and are astonished at the response of the kindly, grizzled old owner of the shop...so much so that we trade him the donation pile we had in the back of the van headed for Salvation Army in gratitude!
We go home with an inexpensive lot of cool glass, tasteful porcelain and a fine looking MCM table upon which to display it! Thrifting proves fun and profitable, and we get to see a slice of Old Florida that is mostly gone in this era of massive cookie-cutter developments and theme parks.

George, LOVE your videos and your knowledge! Someone may have said this already, but that silver fade glassware is Vitreon Queen’s Lusterware, not Dorothy Thorpe. It gets misattributed so much online. DT is sterling and doesn’t fade downward. There are quite a few third party companies that made platinum-banded, silver banded wares. The ones we see the most are Vitreon.
Thank you for telling me that! I really thought hers had a different quality, it honestly was not the thing I look for when Iook for her stuff and I didn't realize Vitreon did those. Will pin this comment if I can so others see it
Hello we own The Old Packing House in Umatilla and we want to thank you for taking your time to come see us 🎉🎉
I’ll try to visit you from Port Orange.
It was so great to profile your shop, had a lot of fun and I'll be back! Thanks for telling your folks about our video
And being kind invites others to be kind what a great store
Agreed
George, you are the gold standard Road Thrifting.
I thoroughly enjoy your videos, no matter the subject. I can totally see you on your own show like
Antiques Roadshow, Nomad Style
Wow, thank you! That would be fun but I like doing it here too
Hey George! This was a really fun video. Considering his generous pricing I am willing to bet the medical equipment will meet with the right people at the right price. Isn't it so heartwarming to meet Good Folks!?
❤❤❤😊
It sure is! Keeps me wanting to do this
Wild George, what a day you found. Some really nice stuff at the last store. That was really nice that you gave him all that donation stuff. That people could use you are a nice guy.❤😊❤😊❤
Lovely glass collection! So many shades of each color. The greens and blues are appealing!
They are! I love mixing those colors
I love when I find a place/guy like the junk store. Sometimes the places in smaller towns are treasure troves. Nice that he could use the walkers etc that you had in the back!
Couldn't agree more!
That clothespin sprinkler😍 My mother always used a ceramic Chinaman clothes sprinkler when I was little and allowed me to use it to iron my dad’s pocket squares. Thanks for the memory jog! It’s always such a delight to shop along with you, George. Safe travels…
Oh yes, we see her old sprinkler a lot, they were popular! Glad to help you have more fun
I love the 1970s flower power tumblers
Hello george be careful traveling wish i could but im stuck in house but i can go with you this way thanks for letting tag along
I'm so glad you get to do this with me, we'll go again soon!
Thank you for another great, informative video George! You can't begin to know how much it means to all of us that you do this!
So nice of you and I'm so glad to do it
Good evening, George. It never ceases to amase me at how some of the mid-century items will outprice the older, "more dignified" items. Then there are things like the Czech glass that is always quality, no matter when it was made. I liked that portrait bowl, behind the Belleek pieces. I'd love rummaging through that junk shop. I'm not too big on the 1970s table 😂, but there were some areas there that did get my interest. Always fun to shop with you and see what you find! Thanks for the take along!
Hello George, I love watching you. You have taught me a lot about what to look for? While you are thrifting❤
Thanks! So glad to share info
The first store was fantastic!! I'd be there for hours on end!
Good evening, George!
I am always drawn to Adams Calyx Ware. I just love that pale green color with the different florals.
That color!
Those finger vases are cool! 😎
That was fun!!
From one of your videos, I think I identified a Morgantown piece. It's worthwhile taking the time to watch these.
Cool! I really like Morgantown and don't see it so much
When I worked at/managed a couple antique malls, I would walk through a lot to see what the vendors brought in, and would also ask them what they had when they brought new stuff in. It definitely helps with sales.
Makes all the difference in the world, that's what malls should do
I love places like these, but I have a tendency to bring home unusual antique jars too often. Thank you for sharing your immense knowledge!!!
Lol that's a fun thing to bring home!
What a great ending! I love your videos George I'm 40 years old, just started delving into learning more about antiques and vintage art and collectables this last year and I just want to say you and all your friends are the bees knees!
Thanks! Please check out all our channels and we'll try to keep you having fun and learning as we go
Super fantastic! Great deals too.
I was pleased!
Late tonight. Just setting into watch. Thanks George.
Another great video! you never know when it comes to junk stores.
I love junk stores like that! There is usually something good if you're willing to hunt around.
You got that right!
That bicycle looks like my first bike I got at Christmas one year in Cedar Hills Oregon.
Aww, neat! Looking forward to seeing you in Portland again
Wonderful finds, George! ❤❤❤
Thank you!
Misty and M.T brought me here. I enjoyed that trip. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it! I did too
I love that he gave you a deal and you gave him so much in return!
You sure know your stuff!
I'd be scared to even get near any glasses or vases or statues, recalling my childhood clumsy trail of destruction ... "Oops!" CRASH
Lol you get used to it after you handle stuff as an adult for awhile though
Thanks Mr. George, that was fun. I love imagining living in a time in Florida when things were simpler. Although I might not like no air conditioning in that humidity. 🥵
Both true!
Speaking of the Clothspin Water sprinkler. I still remember my mother trying to teach me how to sprinkle with Out making wet spots on the clothes. She used the cola bottle with a tin top & cork stopper type. Have to admit she was sweet about it. Never did get the ironing the sheets & pillow cases tho, your just going to wrinkle them when you sleep on them. lol
Love that place! Especially the fist booth.
I found the Joel Phillip Meyers optic decanter at Goodwill awhile back (in honey) and just found the coordinating vase (tangerine) for $45. Thanks for showing the Blenko piec❤es George!
Wow, what a great find!
I agree with you on going to all the stores especially the "junk store" they do have some great stuff that you just can't live without. I go to see what "I can't live without" sometimes nothing but sometimes you find the great piece. Have a great day and safe travels
Hey george!
Sass from way up here!
This video shows sometimes you cant tell a good or bad find store just from the outside!
(Like a book).
It Groppled all day here & looks like a bigger storm headed this way too.
See you in april.
Be safe.
See you then! You're right not to judge based on appearances
Àwsome video George
Those shot glasses are so fun ! I have never seen those !
I really enjoy finding them
Great video George! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you, my friend!
Enjoy your Videos, with the history of items you touch. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you AGAIN George … great content video . I’m Junk Drunk ! My all time favorite video . To me it’s all about the hunt … finding a treasure in an unlikely venue is more exciting to me as a collector ( I’m not a reseller where it’s important to have inventory ) . When I go to an antique mall / show I expect to find “ something “ . Exploring somewhat unlikely places and scoring a treasure is much more memorable . In my own experience I’ve found some of my favorites 0:15 in odd ball locals … pristine Lefton Christmas Girl planter in a tool shed . Thank you George for your generous sharing of All your knowledge / information … your vast knowledge is amazing
I am so in agreement! I'm glad you get to shop as a collector, I remember when I only thought of my own tastes and needs, and put together a pretty cool home...a few pieces have been around a long time now! Tool sheds can be great, I don't get it but I've found a lot of goodies in them, my best was a 1930s Buck Rogers die cast spaceship in its original box! I'm glad you're enjyoing this like I am.
Always good to pay it forward. Love the information and videos. You go to so many places I'll never get to go. Thanks George.
Glad to take you there!
@@TheAntiqueNomad What I enjoy the most is the joy you display for the work that you do. Brings me joy.
Umatilla is awesome. Have been taking breaks from the south Florida crowds there for over 12 years.
Good place to do it, it feels close to nature still
I have 2 Calyx wear tea cups in my collection! That set was wonderful!
So cool!
Great dealing!!
It was fun!
Great deal & seller received the same. So exciting to watch w/all of your info. George.
Blessings Always
Great shop!!! Great informative show, like only u can treat us too!!!U never disappoint!!! Thank u!!!💞💞🙃💞💞
but I love you and you have great content and I like going wherever you go with you
Since you go through Umatilla, you might enjoy Baker City, Oregon. Bird on a Wire Mercantile is an amazing place. Vintage, antiques vendor mall. We also have a resale shop that gets some nice stuff and a couple thrift stores along with some super nice estate sales.
I love Baker City, I've never managed to hit it when the mall is open but I'll keep trying when I drive through that area!
Hmmm, I wonder if the same trick applies to statues? Fairly heavy , leave it up at the front , see what the dealer says 😂.
Are those walkers from your estate sales ?
I have never seen that chrome Cambridge glass before . Very pretty . This is why I like watching your channel, I learn something new . And plus you’re a nice person . Thank you for doing what you do .
Aww, thanks! That's nice of you to say. Statues, furniture, anything big and heavy they don't want to put back. I love that Cambridge stuff
I really like this video.
I did too, my friend found great places for us to go!
I love watching you you really know your stuff
I try to keep learning and help other people do the same
You visited some fun spots! I have to say, I was startled by your manicure at 9:30! LOL!
My friend has great nails! I do not.
Great places and fun finds!
They are!
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love your videos, there so informative and your voice has gotten to be comforting as well…
Hey George! I collect Peggy Karr. The bowl is from her Lilac Line introduced in 1996 and retired in 2001. They made an 11" fluted bowl. At $5.00 you can pick it up for me 🙂
It's always fun to look!
Thanks
I thought you were injured I’m so glad you are not with the walkers …..😅
Oh no, those were my mom's and I'm glad they can go to people who need them
Interesting video to Share with a friend. Many things to learn. Go on, and pass George along to new people by sharing. Just press the arrow.
Thank you! I appreciate that a lot
18:55 I am in DIRE need of a junk shop like that to dig in. They're gone here.
Not a lot like that left anywhere these days!
Hi By George see ya tomorrow
Just Found Your Channel Your videos are fun to watch...
Thank you! Keep coming back for more, every M/W 8pm eastern we premiere them and you can chat with us while they drop
I think you’re such a doll
Aww thanks!
I had a schwinn just like that in the 70's my mom made me give my cool purple schwinn boy's bike to a cousin because she was she was trying to girl me up. My dad was mad because he knew I'm a tomboy.
George, do you do any shows in early July in Florida? I'll be in the Daytona area and would love to come and see you and do some shopping.
No, I'm in Portland doing their big Oregon show in July
HOW do you remember sp many facts, time periods and information?!? Do you live in Florida? Come down for the winters? You also mentioned Texas and Kentucky, so it seems "nomad" is the perfect name for your channel.
Hi there! I do the Florida show circuit in winter and sell at two malls in St. Pete, then Kentucky in shoulder season so I can do midwest shows, then Seattle in summer where I sell in three malls and the Portland and Spokane antique shows
@@TheAntiqueNomad You certainly get around.
And I number one........ thumbs up n first comment
Thank you, you're an earlybird this time!
✨💖✨
❤
Does Florida "Funk" beat Wisconsin "Whoa"? I've never been farther south than St. Louis in 1968, if you don't count Texas or Los Angeles ...
I'm sure it's similar lol
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼💋💋💋💋🇬🇧
✨💙💚💛🧡❤️✨
Hi George ,just wandering you would be good on Tik Tok
I do it on occasion but I like RUclips so I can really explain things
Where is this in Fla
Near Mt. Dora, 40 minutes north of Orlando (where the big Renninger's antique shows and flea market are)
Promo-SM 😉
Hi George, can you please send me the phone number and address of the last placed you visited. A person said junk place but I saw some interesting things I never seen. Thank you for sharing and what store do you rent?
I don't know their info, we just stumbled across it but it's in Umatilla, Florida and has been there long enough you should find it on Google. I rent space in St. Petersburg at Janet's Vintage Modern and Andrea & Friends antique malls
somebody needs to make a dart board for a game of darts for that has Donald Trump's head on it
you seen nice ,but you got to clean all that black under your nails. Just trying to help ya. You use your hands lots in videos.
I apologize, I try to watch that but when I'm working with a lot of grimy things in grimy places it can get overlooked when I'm filming on the fly
Hate that funk smell I will not purchase anything that has that smell lol
Fortunately it doesn't usually permeate the merchandise, you just get the whiff from the old building
Ronald Reagan squeak plenty believe me he needs to run out
You would have liked the show that squeaker was based on then. Spitting Image was a British TV show that made fun of all the politicians in the 1980s
