Wow. My kids were scrubbing through vids and came across this. I couldn't see the screen but as soon as I heard the percussive drumming of the looping star I knew exactly what it was. That sound as it goes into and exits the loop. That's my childhood. Right there.
haha do you remember that sound as it went up as well? Click click click and then that sound as it went down and into the loop, it could be heard all over the park! Oh god that was so cool and these were the best days ever. I remember my first few times on the looping star my head used to fly forward between my legs during the loop lol. Then of course you had the Mary rose, tri star, enterprise and all of the others and the ring donuts and then the arcades outside. God I miss those days so much. Families from all over, just pure fun. Was my childhood too and my best memories. God there are even rides i forgot all about like the zepplin and the lady bird which quite literally almost broke your back with the hard seats as it went round bends lol and god help the one on the crushing side as it went into them lol
And mine. I absolutely 'loved' the Looping Star, and I lost count of the amount of times I rode it throughout the Bembom summers in the 80's. It was a great park then. The Looping Star, the Mary Rose, the Pirate Ship, the Enterprise, the Scenic, and a lot of good funfair rides. I hated that big wheel though it was so high. I only went on it once, and I was scared rigid. It looked so impressive too, I was sad when it went. The Ladybird was good if you sat at the back, and they had a Zyklon around 81/82. I really miss the park that it used to be. It's landscaped better now, but the heart and soul has gone sadly. Great memories though, and I really enjoyed the video.
Many thanks for putting this rare footage up......brings back memories of a great era.....and to see from the top of that mammoth wheel and the railway....and sounds .......great stuff.....sadly no Mary Rose that i loved to go on.....so i tracked it down in 2019 ,its now at Lightwater Valley in Yorkshire that they sold it to circa '92 and they renamed it Black Pearl with a Pirate theme........its the exact same BemBom brothers one .....i travelled there for a weekend stay just to ride it and i can tell you i got goosebumps and im now 49!! I recommend to anyone who likes this video to go ride it.....you know you want to.......went to Margate also this year and they are trying , hopefully add some more rides as we progress, sadly railway was shut on day i went!! Gutted ....but ill go back.....
Thanks for sharing. I love these nostalgic videos :) There's a lot that reminds me to Shetland Ponypark Slagharen, a Dutch park of my youth and from the same owner that time.
Thanks you so much for putting this video up. It realy does bring back found childhood memories. Used to go here in the 80's. So sad that it not much more than a Car Park now but realy glad Thanet Council are trying to do something with this area and with the historic (partly damaged) scenic railway. Cheers.
Thank you, this is legendary!!! Dreamland in it's heyday! Love the brief glimpse of the "Ben Hur" waltza type ride. It looked so innocuous but I remember throwing up down the side of it after I got off at least twice! All the best ones are here....Melody Swings, Big Apple, Troika. Even views of the Sphynx and River Caves....Brilliant!
Yep! I threw up after the "Ben Hur" and also the "Troika". To this day, I will say the way that the "Troika" moved, it was the most vomit inducing ride!
I visited Dreamland in 1996 from the US. I feel fortunate to have ridden the Scenic before it tragically burned. The Looping Star and the Chutes as well as many other of the rides shown here were not there in 1996. I hope they can get this historical place open again.
Thanx for sharing. nice trip down memory lane. It'll be up and running again in 2016. much needed business for margate..chas n dave can sing hearts out once again!
Just seen this, it really does demonstrate how much better the scenic railway was then, than the facsimile rebuilt version. It was definitely faster (there are mag brakes on it now, even though it still has a brakeman), mind you the scenic railway is currently shut after sustaining some damage recently. This was such a great time for the park, they used to to a combined entry, rail ticket, which from made it really accessible for many teenagers in Kent. I wonder if one of the RUclipsrs, that use AI to improve really old films could work wonders with this.
omg I just remembered how painful the ladybird was to your back if you sat on the inside lol, the seats were solid plastic and my back used to cain when I got off that lol
u legend holding that cam on those rides, my dad had a cam and they were bulky lol, great memories and great vid, dig the 80's perms on those girls on Senic Railway haha, thank u so much for posting, i miss the 80's and dreamland !!
Great video. I loved it down there. I went there as a child in the 70's with my parents and then in the 80's as a teenager. Do you remember the river caves there in the 70's. I really loved that ride. Just bought back so many lovely memories. Many thanks.
Ohh i love this video i remember being there i was 6 the best time in Dreamland Margate ever! I wish it was like that now for a long time. it's a shame Dreamland now will never be as brilliant as it was there and then the end of an era when it stopped being like that i reckon.
i remember going on holiday to margate way back in the 1960s with my family ,, i recall a big model ship in the car park area which had small stalls in it with roll a ball ect,, used to go to margate in the 1970s met my ex wife there on the beach ,,, i knew i should have gone to ramsgate that day lol great video great memorys
Lovely footage - thanks for sharing that with everyone. I only went to Dreamland a couple of times but this gets the atmosphere. I gather it's been restored/renovated and recently re-opened. Must get down and have a look at it again. Cheers!
+WestHamChiseller No worries glad you enjoyed it! Yes it has been recently re opened which is great, but its not like it was. Still I suppose any Dreamland is better than no Dreamland.
@Barcrest hey barcrest as my memory serves me right they removed the capsules from Apollo, relocated it to behind the scenic railway, sprayed the dome orange and fitted swings to it, renaming it Heatwave of which i thought was completely pointless!
superb vid. 1989 was about the last time I visited Bemboms. U used to be able to buy a combined train ticket. Big groups of us used to go. Shame no footage of the Mary Rose, m record was 8 times in a row! a few years ago I visited Margate and found that the park is now a carpark with the protected scenic railway surrounded by a fence. Very sad. Margate is shocking now, very run down. One thing though, The old joke shop was still there and exactly the same!
Good lord! Here's some memories. Think I went to Dreamland with a bunch of mates around the same time (89-90ish) so this is exatly how I remember it until the powers that were stripped the place. Fun bit of info for you - The Looping Star is still in operation, only now it's in Botswana & has been painted orange & renamed as Gwazi.
What a wicked video. Love watching the good old days. I keep hearing that they gona build it up again but it wouldn't be the same as the old days. My favorite OnlyFools and horses is the jolly boys as you can see all the rides in action same with this video :-) HAPPY DAYS
If you see it now you wouldn't recognize the place I remember alot of these rides there's next to none there now I wouldn't call it Dreamland now, they have more concerts now thanks for sharing the video
really good video. Always liked your camcorder films that you sent me (Ian Berry). Had a great time when I went to Margate, Chessington & Rotunda in 1997 with you. Wish I had gone to Dreamland earlier to ride Looping Star. Hope you are well.
I think they must have changed the Ben Hur ride by 1993, when I went to Dreamland and it was one of the few rides I went on. In the fleeting glimpse here, it looks like a skid ride- appropriate name as it has "chariots"- Ben Hur being a chariot racer. In 1993, it had horses, with the galloping mechanism underneath, as found on some continental carousels. They galloped in a funny way, with their front ends lifting up. I wondered at the time if they were adapted kiddie ride horses, due to the bases they stood on, but it appears some Continental company made carousels like this.
Yes the Ben Hur ride originally had those chariot carriages. I remember there was a rope you had to pull to get the cars to “skid”, but the whole thing spun so fast you couldn’t really get a good movement going. It was a pretty lame ride to be honest. I’ve no idea why they retro fitted it with those silly horses tho.
@@imansfield those were horses as found on a Zierer giant carousel. Usually these appear to have had a raised stepped platform and a very large cantilevered canopy. Only 2 of those were built. The Dreamland Ben Hur looked like an amalgam of the Skid base and Zierer carousel horses.
I went to Dreamland in 1993 - there weren't half as many rides there then as there were when this vid was taken. From what I remember there was the meldoy swing (paratrooper) scenic railway, the scorpion thing, the looping star - of course and the big wheel. Nothing much, if anything, else. We did all the rides in half an hour. The park was looking pretty shabby and dire then too so I suppose that was the beginning of the parks demise.
only just found this vid on here, i went here in 1988 and remember all the rides well, except what that globe with the orbiting capsules was called ???
+richard downer Glad you enjoyed the video! That ride was called the Apollo, made by Schwarzkopf, who also made the looping star! It was an interesting ride to watch, but really not very thrilling.
Hi mate, nope not pulling your leg. Theres a web page showing all of the rides and stuff they hope to install there when its done etc. Apparently they are keeping the old theme of the place you know, so older rides and things as well as a few goodens obviously. I will have another look about as I havent for months and find the pages and sites Ive seen, I will be in touch. It would be wicked wouldnt it? hehe. I only live two seconds down the road from there as well lol.
This is one of the best videos I have ever seen on You Tube! Brilliant footage and takes me back to my childhood very well! I am 40 now! I actually "felt" I was right there on some of the rides. Didn't see the Mary Rose or Pirate Ship in your footage or were these not working? A previous comment I agree with Jimmy Godden is a very nasty person! Hopefully Thanet Council can save Dreamland and restore it to it's former glory. Search Save Dreamland on google.
Ronnie Dodge DANG!!!! THE MARY ROSE IS COMING BACK?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! I Know Its Still Operational In A Yorkshire Amusement Park But DANM!!!! I CANT WAIT TO RIDE IT!!!!
Agree with Goldenballs82, I was always at Dreamland as a child and later worked there as a teenager. While I was there no money was invested in that place, ride after ride left and it was taken over by gypsys later being closed. Shame. Its lovely to see all the old rides here in this video being enjoyed by the whole family as it was intended.Council has lost sight that Margate is a seaside resort and should therefore have attractions and amusements to bring in tourists. Bring back Dremland!
Wouldnt it be wicked if they do it roughly how it was when we were kids mate? Id love to take my kids there if it is. I used to love going there as I only lived ten mins away. Now im even closer lol its like a 5 minute walk so it would be so cool.
My god those seats on the ladybird ride were hard and if you were on the wrong side of somebody heavy sitting next to you when you shot around those bends, you knew about it!!!!! lol You would have bruises for weeks after lol Will never forget the fun I had in this place for the many years I went there, ive always lived within walking distance. It was a shame to see the pay to enter Bemboms change to dreamland and then to total ruins. I hope 2014 brings all that has been promised.
can`t find footage online, does anyone remember those really large screens in a huge tent like a motion simulator around the 80`s and you all stood up as the screen became a train or a rollercoaster and you tried not to fall over as you watched, i`m sure there was one here as well as chessington zoo before it became a theme park
hehe i visited Bemboms everyday during the summers when I was young, Im happy to say that by late 2013 it will be reopen. There are alot of new rides in the pipe line and tons of money is being piled into the new park. The rides will all be based on old originals with some quite cool ones mixed in. It wont be like the mega rides you see in these huge theme parks but more what are cool rides! They hope to have everything complete by 2014. Bemboms was the best ever wasnt it!
I remember being on the Mary Rose, with my sunglasses between my legs, fell out into the car when upside down, peoples money used to fall out their pockets, a right laugh, 2013 is the year Dreamland will RISE up out of the ashes
Depressing seeing now how far it's gone down hill Dreamland. Thanet councillors and the last owner should be brought to account for their shameful neglect of this once great amusement park.

Ahhhhhhh the 80's what a great decade :-)
We peaked in the 90’s I think. Look now with everything closed down.
Thanks for sharing. I love these nostalgic videos :) There's a lot that reminds me to Shetland Ponypark Slagharen, a Dutch park of my youth and from the same owner that time.

Thanks you so much for putting this video up. It realy does bring back found childhood memories.

The Scenic Railway is the only original ride left. They do have another large Ferris wheel.
Me too!! Such amazing memories!!
This footage is amazing!! Thank you for this uploader!!
@Barcrest hey barcrest as my memory serves me right they removed the capsules from Apollo, relocated it to behind the scenic railway, sprayed the dome orange and fitted swings to it, renaming it Heatwave of which i thought was completely pointless!

Back in the day when it was worth going too.

Spent many a good time at Dreamland. Cannot see Mary Rose in this video. Loved the looping star and The enterprise.
I went 1989 at 13 first time on a train by my own bembom brothers fantastic

happy days when margate was a good place to be
I'm really excited to go here woo hoo! 😀
It's nothing like it used to be 😔
I came here today. Just so sad to see how Margate is so different now
You are right, the Mary Rose was being repaired that day.
only just found this vid on here, i went here in 1988 and remember all the rides well, except what that globe with the orbiting capsules was called ???
+richard downer Glad you enjoyed the video! That ride was called the Apollo, made by Schwarzkopf, who also made the looping star! It was an interesting ride to watch, but really not very thrilling.
This one used to be in Slagharen, The Netherlands. I think they've put this ride in the park in 1989.
Awww the dying embers of the wonderful 80s!
My God Looping star, there is one here in Brazil, :D very cool her.
Hi mate, nope not pulling your leg. Theres a web page showing all of the rides and stuff they hope to install there when its done etc. Apparently they are keeping the old theme of the place you know, so older rides and things as well as a few goodens obviously.

beat ya to it mate i've had a look on the site/s - nice one though, glad it'll be back, i'll be revisiting my childhood when it's done
The lovely days when women weren't covered in tattoo's , long gone
Great old film of Dreamland, there's new footage now and even a new song. Margate Song Video
When 480p was a far distant dream
david jason n 3 other members of the cast went on the rollercoaster featured at start in the episode the jolly boys outing of only fools and horses
I'm sure I saw Jimmy Godden with a box of matches
fool
well i went to the open day and the mary rose is coming back the cheroplanes and possibly a small version of the looping star

Apollo never to return, good video thought thanks dude.
Great nostalgia trip!
I wonder if they had HD then?
This would have been around the same time they filmed the ONLY FOOLS AND HORSES episode "THE JOLLY BOYS OUTING" there.
Where's the Mary Rose??!!
My god those seats on the ladybird ride were hard and if you were on the wrong side of somebody heavy sitting next to you when you shot around those bends, you knew about it!!!!! lol You would have bruises for weeks after lol

Yes - I remember that really well! It was in a white globe thing!
hobsteral I remember one called cinema 180 in Rhyl North Wales in the 80s too.
That was Thorpe park in surrey

I miss the looping star roller coaster
@imans cheers for the top memmorys , really hope this place gets restored 💫💫
Superb!

at 2:03 or so, that guy in the train (closer to the front) is like 7 feet tall or what?
