I don't disagree there! Signals is fantastic! However, if I ranked my favorite songs by how many times I listened to it.... that would be 2112. I don't think I could pick a favorite album (different stages maybe, cause it spans so many years). I was introduced my senior year of high school. They came to SLC in '92 for Roll the Bones and I went. Been hooked ever since!

It was alright. It doesn't have the edge that Moving Pictures had. I get what they were going for, but as far as favorites go it's pretty low on the list. I liked Presto much better if we're talking about post 70's Rush. Which nothing could top.

This album was so futuristic sounding to me as a kid, and was the album that made me a Rush fan. I wore out the cassette. This song in particular has such a spacey futuristic sound to it, and to top it off I think it's one of the last tunes Geddy recorded with his Rickenbacker bass. Signals is awesome in many ways, but the most critical way is because it simply was NOT Moving Pictures 2.0. Rush could have easily made MP 2.0, but that's not Rush. Not in the least. And while MP was a success right off the bat, Signals has been more like a fine wine that just keeps getting better with age. The beauty of Rush is that the formula kept changing and evolving, and the strongest fans never stopped appreciating every variation of Rush.

This is basically about chemistry in its own nature. When you combine two elements, the end result is always the same. In contrast, when human beings are brought into contact, the outcome is always different.
In 1986, Alex Lifeson stated : “Very often, the guys will have worked out something musically and made a tape of it, for which they have nothing particular in mind. ‘Grand Designs’ [1985], on the last album, was done that way. They had the musical ideas laid out and just made a little tape for me with guitar, keyboards and drum machine, and I had that. So, again, if I’m stumped on something that I’ve been working on, I pull out that tape and try to close my mind off for a minute and listen to the tape. ‘Chemistry’ [1982] was a true collaboration between the three of us [Alex Lifeson, Geddy Lee and Neil Peart]. The other guys had a couple of key phrases they wanted to express, so they gave me the music. That was easy because all the groundwork was done. Playing with words comes so much easier than having to dream up the whole thing.” 💙🧪❤️

Alex's solo is sublime, but pay attention to Neil's drumming underneath it. Just phenomenal. Most drummers would be content simply holding the beat there. Neil, on the other hand, practically tells a whole damn story with his fills and flourishes in that section, but still with enough restraint to accentuate Alex's solo rather than overshadow it. Genius drummer.

In the field of statistics, Rush would be considered a deviation from the norm. Signals began my journey.

My second favorite track on the album, after The Weapon. I was fortunate enough to see this performed live in 1982 at the Boston Garden. Love Signals! \m/

Signals is always overlooked in the sense that the BAND felt like they had to drag it over the finish line kicking and screaming..
