- This great song has become somewhat of a country standard being recorded by such luminaries as the Blue Sky Boys, Hank Snow, Tommy Collins, Porter Wagoner and the Everly Brothers. Here Marty Robbins puts his own indelible stamp on this sad prison ballad which tells of the devoted mother who will do anything to see her son who is languishing behind those cold prison bars, sadly to no avail.
Diane Diekman is at present. writing a long ovedue biography on Marty Robbins and would be glad to hear from his fans at home and around the world.

I am one of those people lucky enough to have grown up listening to Marty Robbins. My mother was a huge fan and you could almost always hear his music coming from our stereo. In my opinion he was the best of the best...a wonderful singer, a brilliant songwriter, and an entertainer beyond compare. I'm 70 years old now, and I still NEVER grow tired of listening to Marty. The world lost a treasure beyond compare and a talent that will never be replaced. Those of us who loved him and his music were so blessed to have had the privilege of growing up "Marty".

I haven't read Diane Diekman's book yet on Faron Young, but it has received very good reviews. It is quite mystifying that nobody before has lifted the lid on one of; if not the greatest singer ever to grace Country music. Her book which is still being written should be great reading about a man who is truly a legend.

Yes I agree - the Claude King version was the best I've heard.
The version of this that I listened to a long time ago was by Claude King.

Best version is the Everly Brothers' one, in my opinion. Though Marty is good also of course.
