The most mysterious metal song on the internet. "The Fall of the King" or "The Fallen King", an unknown heavy metal song from the late 80's. Recorded from either Z-rock or Radio WJCU in Cleveland, OH. There is another recording by a different OP from Chicago although the quality is worse. It is not Bernard Cavazos, Red Barron, or Assault (the Ball & Chain). If you know the artist or title of this song, PLEASE let us know!!

    Lyrics:
The sky is filled with ash and smoke!
The towers burn, the walls they crumble!
The bodies lie about the fields,
No one is left to win the battle!
The people can't believe their eyes,
The king has fallen, see him die!
A time of mystery, a time of death,
The Evil One's promise has been kept
    The fall!
    The fall of the king!
    The fall!
    The fall of the king!
The night sky is filled with fire!
See the king on his royal pyre!
Fooled to think the king could win,
Against such evil, against such sin!
The people can't believe their eyes,
The king has fallen, see him die!
A time of mystery, a time of death
The Evil One's promise has been kept
    The fall!
    The fall of the king!
    The fall!
    The fall of the king!
    (absolutely delicious guitar solo)
The king's time has come to pass!
The wicked one has come at last!
A time of fear, a time of pain,
Cannot escape the Evil One's reign!
The people can't believe their eyes,
The king has fallen, see him die!
A time of mystery, a time of death,
The Evil One's promise has been kept

Bernard Cavazos is not the author of this song. He himself has said it is not his song and that his song "King's Fall" was different. Please stop mentioning Bernard Cavazos.
Pathfinder has also been ruled out by Rek Anthony himself.

Nothing major but I am looking into 2 Pittsburgh PA garage bands. Sceptre and Reign. Sceptre has an abandoned demo allegedly called "Dungeon Master" or "Master of the Dungeon". Reign allegedly had a song either called "The king shall fall" or "Tonight the king falls". But asides from word of mouth the only proof my team found of these bands existence is a document both bands tried to sue each other in June 1987.

@@CharlesMarkward okay, very peculiar theory, but what if those two bands are behind The Fall of the King?
In the story in the description, there were two tapes that this song was recorded onto; one in Chicago, and one in Cleveland. This upload is the Cleveland recording. I have never heard the Chicago recording yet. So what if the Chicago tape is a cover/remake of the Cleveland one, or vice versa? One of the band members of (let’s say for example) Sceptre heard their song being covered by Reign without their permission on the radio (vice versa could have also happened). That might be the reason that they sued each other.
A short summary for who have been perplexed by my writing: The Cleveland tape is a cover and the Chicago tape is the original song (or vice versa).
One of the two bands made this song, and the second of the two bands decided to cover this, which led to the first band suing the second band.
Hope this helps in some way!

    • @CharlesMarkward
      @CharlesMarkward 9 месяцев назад +5

A lot hinges on if these bands actually had anything to do with this song. But your theory is pretty much on par with what my team is thinking. I stated it's not too unreasonable a Pittsburgh band would have music played in Cleveland since the 2 cities are only a few hours apart. But until I find something that connects either band to THIS song all I have are plausible theories.
As for the court document, one band was seeking action against the other for stealing their music/songs and the other band was seeking legal action because they stole their looks/gimmick. But it doesn't say who is who, like is Reign saying Sceptre stole their music or is Sceptre claiming Reign stole their act etc.

There are thousands of songs just like this that have been completely forgotten, this one was just lucky enough to have been found on a tape of a 30-year-old radio show in someone's attic. Ok. I don't know if this will help anyone or not. But I'm a guitar player so I pick up on small things like this. The guitar part seems to have been recorded with a Rockman amplifier. It was a small compact amp meant for headphones or plugging directly into the soundboard. It had a very distinct sound that sounds like nothing else. You can hear it on songs like Hall Of The Mountain King by Savatage, Danger Zone by Kenny Loggins, as well as the Afterburner album by ZZtop. Some people would run an equalizer through it to beef it up.
    Now WHY is this important?
The Rockman that has this sound was invented in 1982 and was produced until the early 90s. Which means Fall Of The King could only have been made no earlier than 1982.
The reason this helps, is if you find an 80s metal band that had this strange guitar tone in their other songs, you might be on the right track

My 2 oldest sisters (born in 1970 and 1972) actually remember this song being played by garage bands and local talents in the Coatesville PA area. However, they both swear on mom and dads ashes that the first time they heard this song, a local music festival in Exton PA, I was NOT born yet (I was born in 1984). Even back then nobody could say who it was or what the title was. In fact the one band from Downingtown PA used to refer to it as "The Dungeons and Dragons song". And by that i mean, according to my sisters the lead singers girlfriend (or his sister....they could never tell?) would be in the crowd and when they were ready to end their performance she would shout "Play the Dungeons and Dragons song". My sisters also remember the adults thinking this song was somehow a promotional thing for the PA Renaissance Fair. Unfortunately they cannot offer any clues to the identity of this band or songs title, their guess, back then and still today, was Manowar.

Most people way smarter and better with this music than myself seem to have the opinion that it is not Z'Rose. They range in reason from: the equipment sound professional and they were not, the dates don't add up, Z'Rose only did covers so even it is them in the recordings it's still not their song.....one individual (a supervisor at work who lived in Texas during this time frame) actually said "Z'Rose wouldn't have been sober enough to finish that song". I have only heard 1 Z'Rose recording, and unfortunately the person who recorded it (I think the date says 1989?) spends the majority of the 5 minute video talking during the performance so all i hear is them and not the singer. I have to emphasize about %99 of this info i'm presenting is NOT from me but people who know this genre of music way better than me....i'm more Symphonic metal and neo folk (Corvus Corax, Heilung, Faun etc.

@@CharlesMarkward probably this tape recording was an attempt from them to make something of their own, many bands have started this way, an example is the Brazilian power metal band Angra, they were first meant to be an Iron Maiden tribute but as things went by, they have decided to release things of their own...I couldn't find anything about this "Z'Rose" band in metal-archives, neither at Google with a simple research, but the data gathered until this moment make sense: the Z Rock radio is from Texas, the so called "Z'Rose" band is also from Texas, it was the 80's, so, without internet, this was the way bands used to promote their work...but your story adds some drifts from this sensible data available until now...they are/were from Texas, ok...but until then, they weren't any big group, which means they were probably 9 to 5 salarymen whose musician activity was on weekends and the money earned wasn't enough to keep up with, so, a trip from TX to PA is a long ranged one and expensive for their then standards, I can remember when I've read the Mick Wall's Metallica biography, in which they highlight how hard was for them to go all the way from CA to NY to record Kill em' All, well, unless someone sponsored the so called "Z'Rose from Texas" (like the Zazula couple to Metallica) to play in the events you've mentioned in PA...which means they were good and had potential (this "mysterious recording" doesn't let me lie), because it takes a lot for someone at the other eastern extreme of a big country like the USA to call someone all the way from TX to play in an event when probably there were good bands around and without the need of a sponsorship to travel and get some place to sleep and eat...

@@aSome1 There's some confusion, my sisters never said Z'Rose was playing the song in our hometown area. Local teenage to early college yrs bands were playing it. They recognized this song when I was on a family Zoom chat, i had this song on in the background (by accident actually lol) and my oldest sister (#1 born in '70) asked what i was listening to. I turned it up and she shook her head and asked the other sister (#2 born in '72) "Oh my gosh isn't that that stupid Manowar song Erik and his brother used to play all the time?". Erik was the name of her high school boyfriend. They remember hearing it first at an amateur music fest when my brother (born in '82) was still a baby. Mainly they remember mom fitting all of them in her old "Batmobile" station wagon. By the time i was born in '84 that station wagon was gone for at least several months. The band names they specifically remember playing this, and keep in mind these were "Garage bands" from the 80's were: Venomous Vomit, Razors in your Coffee (Erik's band), Ash to Ash, Cauldron Kings, Coven of Metal, Pridesville, South of Hell and Purgatory. They said there were a few more, but didn't remember....or care....to know their names. (Disclaimer: Several peoples associated with those mentioned bands have been contacted by me and several have replied.....the most common reply is "How the hell do you know us!?" lol)
Also, i am not the one saying it's not them. People much better with much more access to metal archives/records are saying it's not them. BUT, everything you said makes perfect sense to me and I have no argument against any of it. It would make perfect sense if it was a possible pitch demo Z'Rose recorded and kept along for a few years before a station played it. My sisters are %98 certain it was a Manowar song, the only other band they mentioned as a possibility is a Greek band i can't find anything about called something like Sarassa??

So here's a potential lead for everyone: I was just playing this song for a friend who is obsessed with all metal music. She asked me "Where did you get that Talon song?" Talon was/is a German heavy metal band from the early 80's that released several demos and full on albums between '83-'89. Almost all of there songs were medieval themed, especially their 2 demos. Herr's the thing, they supposedly have 3 unnamed tracks from both demos, one allegedly called "King Slayer". I listened to a bunch of there songs and I have to say there are several songs where the singer sounds exactly like our mystery singer, but then the next song they sound nothing alike. So New Years Eve i did my thing at the bar with my own little "booth" i mentioned. Once again the majority of people thought it was ME self promoting lol. After "me" people thought it was the usual: Manowar, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Overkill. One person thought it was a band called "TSA" from Poland. I am actually old enough to remember TSA but i never heard them sing in English. The guy then showed me a video of their singer Marek Piekarczyk doing an interview in English from '87. His speaking voice, did sound very similar to our mystery singers singing voice, but I didn't think it was as dead on as he thought. TSA apparently does have a lost demo of 4 songs, all sword and sorcery related, but I cannot find anything about it except it was supposedly recorded between '78 and '80? Another person and his wife thought it could be a band called "Sauron" based on it's medieval fantasy vibes. Another couple suggested "Black Knight" for the same reasons.
And then i encountered "Eviscerator" lady. WOW did she make an entrance!! (seriously, i looked for a camera crew to see if they were filming some sort of gothic horror or Satanic occult independent film with the entrance she made!!) lol This is everything she remembers about seeing Eviscerator: She saw them perform twice, once in '85 and again in '88. Both times they performed in what used to be a shoe factory (specifically the factory made boots for police and firemen) just outside of London's city limits. Both times they performed, the venue was so amateur that each band had to use each others equipment. So after each performance each band just left the equipment on stage for the next one to use. Eviscerator had 3 guitarists and the one guitarist seemed to be the "leader" instead of the vocalist. When that guitarist introduced each member, they all had the name Eviscerator before their stage name, so it was "Eviscerator Johny", "Eviscerator Matt" etc. The only name she remembers is the Leopold LeStat she mentioned before. I asked why and she stated his was the only name that didn't sound like something ripped off of Lord of the Rings or Dungeons and Dragons. She also remembers that when all the band members said their names, Leopold and another guitarist sounded like they had New York accents. This song was allegedly followed by another song describing "The evil one's" reign but the only lyrics she remembers from it is the chorus of "The evil ones reign has begun, across the sky rides the dragon", and "All the power, all the hate, the wicked one has sealed your fate". Once again she stated that Eviscerator claimed they wrote this song for the movie Heavy Metal, but she herself felt that was just a claim for attention.
I found her account to be interesting....not saying it is completely true and accurate, but i don't think it was something she cooked up to play me. I believe she did in fact see a group who went by "Eviscerator" perform, I believe they may have played this song as well as the sequel she described and all the Nazareth and Lucifer's Friend (does anyone but me know that band? lol) covers she mentioned they did. My gut tells me Eviscerator may have been just another amateur band who used threw this song with their covers to get people interested. Are they the makers of this song and did they write it for Heavy Metal.....I can't say Yes or No? @@SLON-sh2jgI am %99.999 sure it is NOT TSA. Asides their singers English talking voice sounding similar to this songs singing voice there just isn't anything for me to think of them as a serious contender. Yes they supposedly have a lost demo, but that seems to be a recurring theme. As for a band playing like this is 1978, I think the bands Angelwitch and Witchfynde came out in '78. Not quite as fast or intense as this song but within the same boat. I do agree with you that TSA sounds like Rainbow lol

    • @Gregorio_Amareno
      @Gregorio_Amareno 10 месяцев назад +2

As a Polish guy, this is definitely not TSA, due to following reasons.
      1. Marek Piekarczyk's singing voice is completely different from what we hear here
      2. They did not write primarily in English. Their only releases in English, Spunk EP and Heavy Metal World LP were re-recorded versions of the songs already released in Polish, and none of the songs on these releases sounded like this.
      3. This does not sound like TSA's style at all. This song sounds more Iron Maiden-ish, meanwhile TSA was always closer to AC/DC imo.
      4. Even if we ignore the previous points, I don't think there would be any chance for a song from beyond the iron curtain to be played in a Texan radio station.

    • @CharlesMarkward
      @CharlesMarkward 10 месяцев назад +1

@@Gregorio_Amareno Dzien Dobry Pan. I don't know what happened but I made a post ruling out TSA several weeks ago? It was basically EVERYTHING you touched on, except I didn't take into consideration the Iron Curtain part. I agree that TSA sounds NOTHING like this song, unless you know anything about their alleged missing demo? I have also stated many times this song, to me, sounds like Bruce Dickinson.

I was contacted last night by one of my former professors (name withheld) from Immaculata University. She was going through old student research papers and found a students paper from 2014 that references this song! The student paper was "Lost Music: The unspoken sibling of Lost Films". The part about this song reads: "Or the infamous "Fall of a King", played in the south Jersey and Philadelphia area before finding its way to Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Atlanta, Huston, Dallas then finally Chicago in the mid 1980's. Itself Manowar or Iron Maiden like sound entranced listeners and broke radio station phone lines with people scrambling to get the answers "Who was that, and what is that name".
That included in the students intro, i did not read the whole paper, I'm not even sure of she sent the whole thing or just that intro? My former professor thought of me because she remembered i was the ONLY student she had who wrote about Lost Films.

She is also ok with corresponding through said former professor if I have any questions about her sources. The whole 39pg paper will be emailed to me sometime this week. Now the whole paper is NOT about this song, but this song under the name "Fall of a King" is included. Other songs included in the paper are "Like the wind", "Downtime in London", "Crisp breeze", "Unlock my heart" and "My frozen lips"......asides from "Like the wind" I have never heard of these other ones.

In my last comments i mentioned a bar i went to was going to have a mini concert featuring bands that specialize in black metal and 80's tribute metal and i would play this song to see if any of the band peoples or concert goers would chime in. I did just that and got a few hits on the radar with a few of the band members. The one band, Inviaat, the singer says he remembers this song being played on a radio station in Philly PA for an entire summer because that station was trying to find the band. He does not remember the specific station but said it was near the Taylor University campus (my understanding is that there is several?) because the station thought it was the students from that university's music program. When i asked him when exactly that would have been he said Summer of 1983 because he was married on Halloween 1983 and was hoping the station would find the band so they could play at his wedding. A member from the local band "inductus Mortis" said he recalls that song being played "somewhere in the mid 80's" but does not remember if he heard it in Chicago or Cleveland because he bounced between them. I asked several bands, include the Venom tribute band Poisonous Whisper if anyone had ever heard of a band name Eviscerator from the 80's. Only one person thought he heard the name but it wasn't a band name it was a compilation album of NWOBHM from roughly '83-'84, but couldn't tell me anything other than that. As for the other concert goers, the #1 response i got from them was along the lines of "Dude you can sing, you should go pro!".....in other words they thought it was me promoting myself (I wish i could sing like that!!). the #2 response was people thought it was Manowar. After those 2 the guesses were the usual ones i have seen here and everywhere else this topic comes up: Blackmaine, Axis, Overkill, Overdrive, Black Sabath, Iron Maiden, Anthrax, Slayer, WitchAxe and 2 people even asked if it was an Ozzy Osbourne demo.

Holy crap for some reason my last post got cut in half and didn't include the following info, sorry! So the individual i spoke to and got the new possible lead is the former singer of the one band my sisters mentioned, Purgatory, (i do NOT have his permission to use his real name but his stage name was Tarantula). He confirmed he played this song "once or twice" but didn't know the lyrics so they just repeated several "blocks" over and over again. He heard it from a band in NJ and when he asked if he could use the song they replied along the lines of "It's not our song, we don't care" but gave no indication who it was or they even knew who it was? He suggested the band "Knightmare" because they were from Texas and he remembers all of their songs being medieval or medieval fantasy related. Supposedly they wore what looked like full on plate armor (he does not know if it was actual metal armor or something made to look like it). He saw them perform a handful of times because he spent summers in Texas on his grandfathers (mistakenly said uncle in my last post, sorry) ranch and would sneak off at night to "the metal scene" (i do not know if that was a club name or if he just meant that in general?). He began visiting his grandfathers ranch in 1980 and stopped when his grandfather retired in 1992. He gave an estimated timeline for "Knightmare" of 1981-1989.
Interestingly, my supervisor at work lived in Texas during this timeline (roughly mid 70's to mid 90's from what i can gather?) and when I asked him about Knightmare he had no idea. But when i mentioned they dressed up like knights in armor he suddenly looked startled and said "That wasn't their name, their name was Battle Battalion or some s*** like that".

The thing is, whoever this is will have more songs. Nobody would write one song, never perform it, record it, without writing others as well. Especially with this type of production.
Even the metal exploitation "bands" like piledriver and exorcist had entire records(exorcist-nightmare theater, piledriver-stay ugly/metal inquisition). I almost guarantee whoever this artist is they at least have an ep or demo, something more than just this one song.

have anybody here ever considered if it one of the many bands thrown out that it could possibly be one of them as one of their demos with a different singer before finding their current one which they stuck with? its a possibility you have to admit. and with this song, i'd say it comes from a tape of some kind and was restored or remixed to better quality cause at 2:00 to 2:04 the left channel fades out and in again which often happens on tapes.

I was contacted by "1983 guy" late last night. Here is what he remembers: he worked at a Keebler warehouse in Ben Salem PA, most of the times he heard this song was from a coworkers personal radio in the break room. He believes it was a Temple University station because of a jingle that would play "All of Philadelphia and all of you, this is Temple U" (he remembers the person doing the jingle sounded like James Earl Jones 😂) From what he remembers the radio hosts/dj's on that station or possibly another were offering a $100 reward to anyone who could identify it. He does not recall ever hearing people call the station on air guessing who it was, but he does remember the hosts saying it's not Judas Priest, Cirith Ungol, DragonSlayer or Iron Maiden. He did recall several hosts conversations asking if it was the students of Taylor University because they had all sorts of music related courses and would allow students to record on campus in semi professional studios. He was really hoping someone would crack this because he wanted to ask this band if they would play at his wedding, Halloween 1983 (his wife's maiden name was King and where they grew up "fall of a king" was a innuendo for.....you get it lol). His wife remembers hearing this song "maybe a handful of times" at the employee gym she would work out at (a VA hospital) but she does not recall if it was on the air or someone's personal radio. His guess, like numerous others, it's an abandoned Manowar piece. Manowar or the band "Heavy Load" because they were the only band he knew at that time with a sound as close to this (the beat does sound similar to "Angels in Leather" by Heavy Load).
I think the Keebler factory he referenced is the old Nabisco factory (now I think it's a mall?)? I actually do remember a similar radio jingle on many Philly stations like "All of us and all of you, this is Temple U", but I'm fairly certain it was an advertisement for Temple not a station? I asked my sisters about Taylor University having a music program, yes they did and yes they would record demos from students as a Production lesson, however they do not know if they ever released the demos recorded there. As a long shot I asked him about the band that mystery lady told me about, "Eviscerator". He remembers the name, but he thought that was a stage name for a singer not a band or album. When I asked if he remembered what band he replied "I never knew, I just heard the name now and then".

One thing that I feel added to his credibility, I asked what percent he is certain it was THIS song and he said "high 80's, low 90's range". That's way better than the usual "I'm 100% and how dare you question me!" I usually get.

This song was actually played on an old Philly/NJ station on the segment "Della names your tune" in 2009. I was able to get in contact with "Della" (real name withheld by her request) who at first stated "I played thousands of unnamed songs bud, I probably played this one 100 times, sorry i wont be much help" . Then a few days later replied "I do recall this one, it was sent in from a local listener who had it labeled as Dungeon Master or maybe Dragon Master on a CD with a bunch of old early Manowar, JudaPriest, Iron Maiden, Megadead, Metallica and AngelWitch songs. He or she claimed their father had this song on a tape from his college days. Nobody knew what or who it was back in '09 or '10 and as far as I know nobody figured it out when I left the program in '15."
Disclaimer: I know some of those bands are misspelled, I purposefully left it that way because that's how she sent it to me.

One of the names thrown about here and there on posts about this song is a Steven Linfield ("Lindi") who bounced between Chicago and NYC in the 1980's. His alleged involvement varries between being the DJ who allegedly played it on a NYC station, to being a Chicago stations record manager/clerk etc etc. I got in contact with him yesterday. He denies having ANYTHING to do with the airing of this song and does not know how or why his name came up. While he did work at 2 stations (NYC, then Chicago during the summer) he was an overnight watchman (security). However, he does recall this song being played on "some amateur hour crapshoot" in '86 in NYC a bunch of times. At that point in '86 he claims people were referencing it as "The King Song" or "The song of the King" (drawn out to match the singers "The Faaaalllll, the fall of the kiiiiiing") and it was already 2 or 3 years old at that time. He did explain that at least at the Chicago station there was an amateur drop-off slot that the dj's would pick through and play random "no namers" labeling them as "space filler". Because they would be played, literally just to fill space, they were NOT mandated to keep any records of them. Sometimes the dj's would just make up names to some of these. One of his main duties was to check the drop-off to make sure there were no bad things thrown in there instead of cassettes. Another dead end, but at least we rulled out one theory......silver lining??😂

I know a few bands in the early 2000’s in the Bay Area that have not gotten big nor people in forums know about. These types of bands will forever be forgotten by time. I understand some bands may not exist anymore, but for the ones who are still around has anyone made contact with them?
Also, has anyone listened to Overdrive's 1982 song "On the run", the opening guitar sounds identical to the opening guitar of this song just slightly slower. At least to me it does. Also, has anyone heard of a band called "Knightmare" from Texas roughly 1981-1989'ish? That name popped up when i was corresponding with a member of the one "garage band" my sisters mentioned. The former member had an uncle who had a ranch in Texas he would spend Summer vacation at and remembers "Knightmare". The only way to find out who made it is by getting that physical copy to actually identify them once and for all. I was just talking to my fiancé about this song. I’ve been hitting up old heads that work at music stores. There’s a guy named asop at a record shop in Oakland. I currently live in Oakland ca. He was one of those dudes who would book shows for bands that were small and medium sized. Booked from holy terror, fog of war, dekapitator, and bands from all of the us. I think he’s from Pennsylvania. I talked to him about smaller bands he even knows them. I totally forgot to mention this song. He was booking shows all over the country in the 80’s. Once I go back I’ll give him the details on it. Crazy how he for real knows bands from everywhere even though they’re small where people wouldn’t recognize them

He said he would move frequently but had those connections to do all this. Guy has a memory of some superior being or something

I do not know if it is related or not but in the 80's through mid 90's there was a music store in West Chester PA called "Asop Metal: records, cassettes, recording and bookings". My sisters would shop there all the time. The building is now a skateboard/Rollerblade store.

"Aesop's Metal and Music: Cassettes, records, samples, recording studio and bookings" was the store I'm talking about.

ill probably hit up the store to confirm with him. Might be the same person since I didn't know how to spell his name. Been busy with work and the shop closes at 6pm pst.

As I mentioned this could be from another universe as a recruiting/help signal to make the evil king fall from his throne

I posted this on another forum and one listener suggested it might be a Judas Priest tribute band.

Judas Priest is one of the "top 5" people say this either may be or sounds like.

I am wondering if adjusting the head on the deck used for playing back the tape could restore some of the treble, it often helped back in the days.

You'd have to ask Sled 1025, the OP with the tape this particular recording came from
