    Even though the property has been neglected by the previous owner, it barely takes away from its beauty. I hope the fencing issues resolve. Good neighbors are a blessing to one another🙂

    Grew up on a farm 67 yrs ago. Fencing and animals just come with having the farm. Seeing Brooks with her muddy shoe reminds me of when my boots got stuck in the field at 3yo and I came home without them. Every kid should have the chance to grow up on a farm. Good memories. You have a beautiful new farm. Love following your adventures.

    Hi, Dusty! I totally agree with you, re: neighbor's cattle getting on your land. Same problem here for many years. No big deal. My WONDERFUL neighbor was 88 when we moved in. He retired from doing everything himself at age 101, and died at 103.5! He was GOOD PEOPLE. Taught me a lot. Helped whenever asked, and vice-versa.

    My dad finally learned after he had grand children... He had a pair of boots for the kids that looked like his. There became a designated place by the door for all of the boots. When he put his on they quickly got theirs and insisted on putting them on. Sometimes it was the little ones that got onto him because the boots did not get put by the door when they were taken off. They loved going out to the animals especially when it was muddy!!
    You will figure it out- Hopefully quicker than my dad. : )

    Speaking of wild hogs, do you carry protection when out and about. Love your land. And yes fencing is always an issue. Hog panels are very useful.

    • @edmartin875
      @edmartin875 2 года назад +3

      I don't know the carry laws in Oklahoma. Here in Texas you can carry anytime. Don't need license or permit, concealed or open...anytime. I do not carry nor does my son. I have never seen the need. And I have never seen anyone open carry in my city. If I move a firearm in or out of my vehicle, I do take care to not be obvious about it. I do have 1 brother (former cop) that lives in a rough city and both he and his wife carry concealed anytime they leave their house. Another brother sometimes carries but his wife does not and they are often in snake country. A 3rd brother and his wife do not carry but had permits when they were required and at least 1 of their sons does. So it's a personal thing here, contrary to all the memes and tweets claiming EVERYONE in Texas is ALWAYS armed to the teeth. But, hey, I live in an apartment in the city. No feral hogs around here.

    Glad you worked it out amicably. When I grew up on a ranch in the 80's, my dad taught me that when each of you are looking at a fence from your own side, that you share with a neighbor, you are both responsible to keep up the right half. Just a thought. Merry Christmas and keep up the good work!

    I've lived in Texas & know about riding fence lines, sharing the repairs w/neighbors, & especially about cattle out on the highway (scary!). Grew up in Wisconsin in a area w/fence line along our & other people's properties. The other side was a boarding stable. The horses (10-15) were always finding some way out, stampeding between the houses & out to the road. Little kids are washable & drip dry. But oh the memories you two are building! Merry Christmas to all of your family.

    If you have wild pigs, they will get under and push up fence which may leave bigger gaps. Also, I hear tell getting a group of goats can help keep the brush down and keep more grass growing.

    Your little girl will grow up being close to you and the land. A little mud is no big deal. She's lucky to have such a good dad. Good that your neighbor came for the cattle and hopefully he will do his share of the fence repairs. I understand that the fencing for bison needs to be sturdier than for cattle and that is not cheap. You have a good man in Kevin and I hope he can help you get it up and running. Merry Christmas to you and all the Baker family.

    Dusty good video today. I loved seeing Maya & Brooks with her hugging Maya. That touched my heart. Oh how beautiful. Maya & Brooks can grow up together. So sweet. Don't fret over ber in the mud as kids we would come in head to toe in dirt and mud. Playtime on the farm. Someone asked me just today do I miss my animals and home. Yes I sure do. We owned cattle we had to share fence repair work. Whoever's cattle went over they had to fix the fence and we would bring ours home immediately. We would help our neighbors. We were taught that way. We got along pretty good. Hood job your doing. Can't wait for the news from North Dakota. Did you bring home a bison or 2?? You take care. Don't let people make you feel bad. You do a wonderful job. Merry Christmas to you all.

    It is a good idea to fix all the fencing as you get to that area. On a place with a lot of fence line it could cost a pretty amount of cash as well. But it is always a lot of work when you own what you love. I know in some places if you own bison and they get out of their area and the neighbor finds them to be a fright to them or there livestock some rancher will shoot them. And I guess it is legal , how I am not sure as long as they can get you and tell you that you need to remove them now or they will be shot . I have heard of this in Texas and not sure how many where out but this man killed all of them on his property. So just to keep them safe better to repair then face a law suit because someone was scared of you bison. Any ways Good luck on keeping everyone where they need to be. Hop you and your family stay have a great Christmas and a Happy New Year.

    Just a thought - when you get some timber taken care of and you buy your new fencing, why not have a huge family day where everyone pitches in with the installation of the fencing and you provide them with a BBQ in the evening. It's great fun and also a way of getting a lot of work done in a short time. Set a date well in advance so everyone can arrange to be there. 😊😊

    Most people think ranching and farming are a kickback occupation. Just throw some seed in the dirt and stuff grows or put some animals out, let them eat the grass and they just have babies you can sell. Not to mention supplementing feed required as years and condition change from year to year. Even considering care of the animals, that is not the lion share of the load. At least 70 - 80% of the work is fixin' stuff that gets broke. Fences are about 90% of that, between storms, wildlife and your own stock, fencing takes a constant beating. Hogs are going to be a problem in those low areas, as they root and make mud holes they will tend to increase your erosion problems. Keeping their numbers down will become a big deal.

    Raised on a dairy farm in Vermont. The Vermont railroad had access to our locked double-gated 40-acre pasture at a track crossing for track maintenance. One railroad employee didn't close and lock one side of pasture gates. 25 bred young cattle got onto the tracks and were killed or maimed. Fencing is a primary investment in herd and safety for animals and humans. A freight train couldn't stop in time and the carnage was unbelievable. Know your
    fence lines and areas that need to be beefed up, make sure all is strong. Cheers from Maine.

    A little advice about putting in water gaps everytime the water floods it will take the fence out. What works best for us is to stretch a cable across the water above the whe water high enough that whe water won't reach it streach it between trees or set post real deep because it will have to hold. From that cable hang panels down to where they are just above the bottom. Hang rocks to the bottom or tie the bottom to steaks with light wire so that when the water comes up or when trees or other trash comes down the creek it will break at the bottom. Water and trash should shove panels up allowing it to go under pannels. When water goes down panels will go down you just reattach them to rocks or stakes. While this works some times you may arrive and pannels will be gone depending what went through the gap you may only have the cabel across the creek. Use heavy cable and make sure it is high enough that it dosent get taken out. You can't build strong enough percent fence that rushing water full of trees and limbs trash whatever is in your waterway will not fail in flooding conditions. Take time to put it in right that will make fixing it after floods a lot easier and quicker

    Paneled fencing is an excellent idea, and you know this. Fencing is always an issue. Fence checks are critical. Just saying. Just do the work. Check the fencing. And, not just today. Yes. It is work. And, it isn't fun. But, look at what you are creating. You have a chance of a lifetime that most of us never get. You are so very blessed. And remember this about other animals getting on your property. One day the shoe may very well be on the other foot. It seems to always work that way.

    Dusty, totally relate to this video. One time I had a bunch of cattle from a neighbors pasture come on to my place under a fence that crossed a wet-weather creek. Those cattle managed to nose under the handle on a freeze-proof water hydrant on my place. By the time I got back home, it looked like a lake. Didn't know cattle could work a water-hydrant. These sure as heck did! Just had to put in a new water-gap; problem solved. I've always operated under the old standard of "right-hand rule" with fence that borders a neighbor. Each neighbor is responsible for the half of the fence on their right hand when facing each other in the middle of the fence. Good fences keep good neighbors. Wishing you and your beautiful family a most blessed Christmas celebration.

    I have a rancher friend who is constantly fixing fence. The sheriff calls her often saying her cattie are out. Most of the time it is not hers, but she spends time calling various ones to find out whose they are. She is a good person. Robert Frost wrote a poem called "Mending Wall" where neighbors work on each side to repair the rock walls between their lands. I always think of this poem when you talk about fence repair.

    I understood perfectly what you had said about the property and issues you were having. I also think its great you have the little creeks and ponds for the bison on this property. And all the other assets like pecan trees, blackberries and the deer and wild boar. One thing I was wondering was about the ruts that the boar are making. Would this cause your bison to trip or fall ? I was just curious. You have Big Joe to majestly be the king of this new property. So there's a plus ❤.

      That was what I thought it looked like to me also. She jerked slightly (looked like it) and then the tears were a "given sign" she got scared. That mud did NOT look like anything to make mud pies out of it-especially being a "woller" (? waller)southern sounding like wallow, but an r in the end. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO THE CROSS TIMBERS BISON RANCH AND ENTIRE FAMILY.

    In creeks the best thing I’ve found that works well is what I call a swing fence. You can hang it from the top with something like half inch cable as the main hanger and chains going down. Then use something like steel pipes across the creek in layers every foot or two. That way when the creek floods and washes debris down the creek it swings to let it pass and then swings back in place. I’ve had many fences washed away in the past before doing that.

    I enjoyed seeing them...I live in the city, 2 blocks away from a cattle meat packing plant...one afternoon 41 cattle escaped and ran wild throughout the city...some one had left the gate open.

      Oh, thats a good story! It reminded me of the time I was visiting in Minot, ND @ the Hustefest ( like octoberfest ) @ the fairgrounds, Somehow a Prize Brahma bull got loose from a livestock show and came charging through the open doors of a large auditorium where food was being served and music going on, and burst into the womens restroom. I was lucky not to have been in there, but I heard the commontion. The restroom area was quite spacious with stone or marble floors, so the bull had space to run around and found his way or was chased back out. Nobody was injured, but the ladies were startled to say the least.

    I Wisconsin on a boundary between two properties, The owner of the property is responsible for the right half of the boundry fence as viewed standing on their property. Even if they don't have livestock, they are still responsible for half of the fence. The fence is required to be 50 inches high and no more than 4 inches off the ground.

    Most people do not realize how much care a pasture needs. Cedar trees can take over a pasture and it is a constant job to get rid of them. That is a beautiful new ranch Dusty. I will be interesting to follow you as you care for the land and make improvements.

    • @prarieborn6458
      @prarieborn6458 2 года назад

      I didn’t know that about cedar trees and wondered why Dusty was talking about getting rid of them. Where I live in the PNW cedar trees are desirable. The Forest Service takes a dim view of city folk going into the woods @ Christmas time and lobbing off big cedar branches to sell for wreaths etc.

      @@prarieborn6458 , Dusty would probably be more qualified to answer about cedar trees than I. My wife and her brother have pastureland in southern Kansas, and he (her brother) is constantly fighting cedar trees and cockle burrs. Hedge trees also have a tendency of getting out of hand too. My BIL keeps brush killer spray on his Gator to keep their pastures relatively tree free.

      @@larryphillips6793 Hi Larry, I certainly did not mean to be critical about what ranchers need to do to manage their land. I was raised on the prarire and longed for the trees.I had to chuckle that some comments were about saving the blackberries. They are everywhere out here and it is a fight to keep them from taking over. Come on out to my place and pick as many as you want ! imagine cedar taps into the ground water needed for pasture ? Or it is just natures way, for trees to colonize open land. Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a better year ahead 🌲🌲🌲🌲🦬🦬🦬🦬😎
