Thank you James for putting this lost but now found Cemetery back on the map ( youtube ) for so many people to see you are truly a caring Gentleman who has total respect for the dead and for living.
My partner walked those woods as a child and was shocked to see the lack of care he said there were many more also a nuns head stone at the top has gone looks terrible
Thank you James for your presentation. I've looked at a number of historical websites, yet there's no mention of a fully working farm at Roundway Hospital. Milk & cheese were produced not just for residence, but also enough to sell to other hospitals. I had relatives & friends who worked at Roundway. I once met a man who worked at the farm, who told me the story. This inspires me to find out more from my local museum.
We look after the lost, lonely and vulnerable a lot better these days, but we still have such a long way to go to everyone the respect and dignity we all deserve. Good choice of background music James, added to the melancholic feel to your film.
Thank you for watching the music was the only track that seemed to fit this video and is called Fading Away -Quite apt for this sad but historic area !
Wow. Just catching up on your videos and glad I have. Such a poignant area. Like you say these people deserved respect and just didn’t get it back then. Thank fully attitudes are changing. I have suffered with depression and anxiety for a long time and know how it can feel to be isolated. To just destroy the headstones is nothing short of criminal. I get very frustrated with development as it often disregards what is there. Great video. Thank you for showing us. 🙏🏻🚶🏻♂️🚶♀️
Hubby's 2x great grandmother is buried there somewhere. (Emma Searchfield nee Wickham). She was in and out of the asylum for a few years, around the anniversary of the death of one of her children. She died in 1881 aged just 50. They come from Heytesbury and Knook. Thank you for sharing.
Stunning place, not far from me. Been there a few time, and your right its so sad. I had heard from locals and people who worked at the hospital that a lot of the graves were unmarked graves. Could be true or one of those things that people talk about but never know for sure. great video
It is sad that so many cemeteries have been abandoned all over. I know that just in Nova Scotia alone there are too many just left to deteriorate. Indeed, may these loved ones rest in peace. Thanks for sharing and showing your care...Bruce and Otis
Another amazing historic adventure, though it is such a sad end for so many poor souls, it is a nice area to visit, and reputedly haunted 👻 thank you for a great video, 👍
How sad but so respectfully done. I have an old asylum site very close to me that has been redeveloped to a new housing estate and secure prison for mental health patients. your video has made me wonder where or if there was a burial site and has it been forgotten. thank you for sharing and bringing awareness.
All part of our sad hidden past a good thing that we are all more aware and caring these days-I was really disturbed that these poor people have been so badly treated in life also in death !
I moved over the way from there in 2001 (Massey Road ) and lived here for about 5 years , one day me and my other half went for a walk through those woods and came across some workman making a set of stairs in the said woods from old gravestones , just look at the pathways in those woods and you will see them . This is 100% . They used the stones for the riser part of the stair, not the bit you walked on . I remember thinking that was a bit "off" , I did not know there was 4000 graves there , that shocked me . Thinking about it most of them most probably did not have a gravestone, they cost money and if they was left there means nobody cared about them .
James, my mum worked at Roundway Hospital from the early 70s until it was closed. In, what you might call, the 'basement', but it sounded more like a dungeon, the shackles were still drilled into the walls. Years (decades) before, they would shackle patients and force-feed them foul substances to make them 'vomit out their demons'. It sounds absolutely ridiculous these days but then at that time, don't forget, they thought women who had children out of wedlock were mentally deranged. Thank goodness things have changed.
That is so so terrible as you say a good job things have changed-I was disturbed by the fact that the grave stones and markers were removed I really wanted to know what happened to these. Your Mum must have been a strong character to have worked in such an environment -Thank you for watching Philip 👍👍
hi not far from me would like to visit this place .do you know what the actual name of the place is .would like to go and pay my respects to those poor souls .thank you

Hi, where did you get the 4,000 Graves Information?
Look at Devizes history & Wiltshire sites to start 👍Amazing a true fact and so sad-Thank you for watching !
Sad to see 😢
Sad that they are not recognised and that headstones and markers are gone-Really quite a emotional visit -Thank you for watching 👍👍
Unfortunately there is no respect shown for the dead nowadays and this video highlights that sad fact.
So true 👍👍
