  • The U.S. Air Force's large military transport aircrafts C-5 Galaxy and C-17 Globemaster III’s T-tail internal access ladder is allows maintainers to access the T-tail and elevator panels located nearly 55-65 feet (17-20 m) off the ground.

I was stationed at Travis AFB California in 1970 . I was an aircraft mechanic on the brand new C5 in a brand new squadron. One day my boss came to me and ask me to describe my High school class ring. It's a very distinctive looking ring and I had miss placed it. I described and he handed me my ring. It had fallen out of my pocket in the tee-tail. The C5 had flown twice to Japan and back with my ring in that tail. I never wore my ring to work again.

This is a great story. I work for a place that made aircraft parts and wiring, and I can imagine that could happen , I've been in the C-5-A,s at Moffett Field California .

I worked on the RAF Victors at Marham back in the 70's and saw a very nasty demonstration of why you shouldn't wear rings when working on aircraft.
My chief was climbing out of the cockpit down the near vertical access ladder and jumped the last 2 rungs, but unfortunately his wedding ring caught on a piece of the ladder frame and he stripped the skin completely off (degloved) his finger. He passed out on the spot and was carted off to the station medical centre and then to hospital. Needless to say, everyone made sure rings weren't worn at work any more 😬

@125brat that is absolutely great safety advice. I almost had that almost happen to me with my wedding ring finger, but I was lucky .

@@MrRockydee07 When I was at work I never wore my rings , that's why it it took two flights to Japan without me. It fell out of my pocket while I was working in the tail. Now as a biker I have had the practice of wearing up to eight rings at a time. But I worked as a machinist and the same rule applied. No rings while working.

@user-ho4nw5sf3w That's great. I'm old school myself , I used to go to the Harley-Davidson shop in Oakland, California, and talk with some of the Hell's Angels about their bikes .

In the mid 70 I was at Travis and climbed that ladder many times as a 328X0 comm tech. We maintained the CDPIR (crash data position indicator recorder) that lived on top of the tail. When we had to change it, we used a very large calavar cherry picker to retrieve it.

It's 65 feet to the ground. If you have to go out on the tail you have a special restraint harness you wear in case you fall. I've been on that and I have used the harness.

As part of our aircraft training when I joined the 436th Airlift Wing, C-5a back 1974, we had to climb the ladder and look out the top ... what a view. The largest aircraft up until then is a C-130.

30Tonner C130 is a toy nowadays! Even back in 70's IL76 could pickup 100 Tons , apart from its extreme reliability C130 is out of question!

Young people are amazing, I get dizzy just watching this on RUclips. I have a fear of slipping off the tail, couldn't do it. Wonder if anyone ever tried doing that with a parachute on at 15,000 ft?

You need to visit the aircraft museum in Speyer Germany. They have a 747 on a pedestal in a "climb" position and you can go out on the wing...if you are not safe with heights, that will be a strange feeling

Falcon 500s and 900s probably 7Xs have a winch built into the vertical stabilizer to raise and lower the #2 (central) engine. pretty slick.

Splendid video! I just subscribed to your channel. I remember seeing the first C-5A Galaxies when I was a child. Until today, I had no idea that the C-5 and the C-17 are equipped with internal ladders in the vertical tail for easy maintenance access to the tail plane surfaces. Do the access ladders also provide access to the flying tail motor and screw jack? I also remember walking through the entire cargo hold of a C-5B which was on static display at a Dobbins AF base air show sometime in the early 1980s. I recall looking up at the seemingly impossible height of the T tail and realizing that the C-5's horizontal tail planes were similar to the wing area of the first Boeing 737 and DC-9 aircraft. Unfortunately, the Blue Angels air show was not very impressive since they were flying the tiny A-4 Skyhawks.

I was doing touch & gos in the pattern, in a DA20, and a C17 was inbound for a full stop. It was so big, even far away, it looked like it was standing still. I did a full stop after that last one, I had no desire to land behind that behemoth.

Your yellow path on the C-5 cutaway is wrong, the forst ladder in the tail area know as the torque deck is for the HF coupler access, the ladder to the base of the tail is in line with the aft spar of the vertical stabilizer. You can't access the tail ladder from in front of the fwd spar! The photos you show explain it better.

Nothing like having somebody taking a video of you stripping out screws. As a retired C-5/C-130/C-17 crew chief, that is the last thing I would need. Time for that Johnson bar! I had to really battle my fear of heights working on those things. I even had to remove a C-5 t-tail leading edge in a cherry picker (calavar). Now that was nerve wracking!

I was rather amazed to see that the mil was still using the speed wrenches that we used in 1970. I was not surprised to see that airmen are still using just that to break loose and start threads. Some things never change.
