The original B-1 was a lot faster. Thank you you Government interlopers.
The mission requirements changed.
The original B-1A was astronomically expensive in the 1970s the cost was upwards of 170mill that’s about the cost of a F-35 today. It also couldn’t carpet bomb so it had to make multiple pass on a target which would have made it unsurvivable. Oh and let’s not forget the Carter administration already had the F-117 stealth attack plane on order. The B-1A would have bankrupt the airforce. Unit cost of the F-15A about 14mill F-16 7mill durning the same time period.

Don't they have a hangar they can push the plane into to change the engine?
My guess is they have to train to do these things in any environment
Big aircraft generally have most fault finding and repairs to systems like engines done outside unless the weather is really bad. spent many hours with my arms above my head doing something difficult where you can see it or do it but not both at the same time, with cold rainwater running down inside my cold weather gear soaking me from the inside.
At 4:19 notice the smoke from the engine exhaust, that engine he is getting up close and personal with is HOT, touch it and you get a little burn mark every time, looks like they are changing out temperature sensors so you are generally working in very tight spaces doing that. It looks like the trainee is finding out how to not burn yourself by practicing not burning himself.

Well that is one of the problems in the military you are expected to do things right first time and every time. They were working under near perfect conditions, throw in an exercise/operational environment, wearing NBC clothing and gasmasks, with possible ground attacks thrown in, so you have a gun to carry around too, plus bad weather(war doesn't stop for the weather) and you have a really high pressure environment topped out with very tight time constraints. Of course safety is a big factor you dont want accidents injuring people you need and damaging equipment that is essential, but some things dont work in a operational world and you work around it.

Guys get general trade training, then posted to type get a type course, then go to their job and learn how you really do it on the line
@@davedixon2068 that's what I'm hoping...but maybe train on something else, like a tractor.....they look like they didn't complete a course on how to use a socket wrench.....imho....
@@daleb5967 Pointless training on a tractor, when you are going to fix supersonic aircraft, different engineering by an order of magnitude. (not denigrating tractor engineers/mechanics, but if some thing fails you stop in the field and fix it, if it fails on an aircraft you crash and burn). You have to start some where and being filmed while still not entirely confident adds another layer to the need for supervision. The tasks shown gave me the impression that a training opportunity was being taken and there were a lot of extra people around. Having trained in this sort of environment you need eyes in the back of your head because you have to double check everything as you go along, trainees tend to get heads and hands into gaps they shouldn't.
That's like having a dog fix your brakes on your 2022 mustang. At some point, equipment like nuclear power plants and strategic bombers need to only have skilled labor. Basics should be started with basic equipment. Even civilian equipment. Unless you enjoy flying in a commercial plane and watching an engine cover rip off and catch fire. Not my cup of tea...
